REPORT: Mutual interest in Bill O’Brien returning to New England Patriots as OC

Some believe a deal is already in place for Bill O’Brien in New England.

For the last two seasons, Bill O’Brien has been the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator. The lead play-caller for the Alabama offense headlined by Heisman-winning quarterback Bryce Young.

Recently, a report surfaced that the New England Patriots were interested in potentially hiring O’Brien, which would be somewhat of a homecoming for the Massachusetts native. From 2007-2011, O’Brien served in numerous roles within the Patriots’ offensive coaching staff. He ultimately became the team’s offensive coordinator in 2011 but left after one season to become the head coach at Penn State.

Patriots insider Tom E. Curran joined the Up and Adams Show and stated that he believes there is indeed mutual interest between O’Brien and Bill Belichick.

He also details that his sources believe a detail has likely already been agreed upon or is

in the works.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and the future of current offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

Alabama OC Bill O’Brien linked to New England Patriots OC job

Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is being seriously considered for the Patriots OC job.

Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien spent the last two seasons in Tuscaloosa, but his time may be coming to an end. Now, it’s reported O’Brien is one of the lead candidates for the New England Patriots‘ offensive coordinator position.

O’Brien is no stranger to the NFL, especially Foxborough.

For five seasons (2007-2011), O’Brien served in various offensive coaching roles for the Patriots. He ultimately became the offensive coordinator in his final season before accepting the Penn State head coaching job.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports O’Brien’s name has come up as a potential replacement for the offensive play-calling done by Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

“Sources say Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is a strong option to return to his former home and assume his old role as OC under Bill Belichick for next season. This would be a potential answer to an important question facing the Patriots in the future.”

O’Brien is an experienced coach that has served as a head coach and high-ranking assistant/coordinator for major collegiate programs and playoff NFL teams.

His future in Tuscaloosa is unclear, as he agreed to a two-year contract with the Crimson Tide, but both sides have seemingly remained quiet regarding the possibility of an extension.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and reports that link Bill O’Brien to other coaching opportunities.

Former Alabama OC Brian Daboll hired as New York Giants HC

The former Crimson Tide OC is now an NFL head coach!

The Nick Saban coaching tree is ever-expanding. Now it has grown a little more, as former Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has been hired as the New York Giants head coach.

Daboll served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017, a season that ended with a Crimson Tide national championship.

He then moved onto Buffalo, where he held the same role for the Bills from 2018-2021.

His coaching abilities led to him being courted by numerous teams and being a finalist for the Giants, was well as the Miami Dolphins.

The news was made public by the New York Giants social media, which stated “Got our guy.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Brian Daboll as he transitions into his new role as a head coach in the NFL.

5 potential replacements for Alabama OC if Bill O’Brien leaves

If Bill O’Brien departs from the program, who might the Crimson Tide look to hire?

With one game left in the college football season, the Crimson Tide’s offense ranks No. 6 in the nation. The man calling the plays has been Bill O’Brien in his first season with the program.

O’Brien sparked some buzz when he got the job because he was tasked with following up Steve Sarkisian as the offensive coordinator, and had seen success in his time at Penn State and in his earlier days with the Houston Texans.

Nick Saban has a vast coaching tree that can only be compared to Bill Belichick’s. Now, his coaching tree may be ready to expand, as O’Brien’s name has been brought up as a candidate for the LSU head coaching job.

Here are five names Alabama fans may want to get familiar with.

Chargers request interview with Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy after firing Anthony Lynn

A new report says the Chargers have requested an interview with Eric Bieniemy.

Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy has already completed interviews with two NFC teams in the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions.

Now an AFC West team that Bieniemy is very familiar with has requested an interview. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Los Angeles Chargers have requested an interview with Bieniemy. This comes a day after ownership fired former Chargers HC Anthony Lynn, who had been the head coach of the franchise since 2017.

Chiefs fans will be quick to dismiss the attempt by Los Angeles to lure away their OC for a head-coaching job, but Bieniemy does have ties to the area and the team. Bieniemy was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 1991 and played with them through 1994. He also grew up in Los Angeles county and played high school football in the area. He coached at UCLA before making his way to the NFL for the first time in Minnesota.

Coaching in the AFC West since 2013, Bieniemy has a strong familiarity with the franchise and vice versa. He’s also seen what rookie QB Justin Herbert is capable of firsthand. This should be a strong option for Bieniemy as disheartening as it’d be for fans in Kansas City.

On the other hand, Fox 4 Kansas City Sports Anchor Harold R. Kuntz had some interesting statistics to offer if Bieniemy did happen to take the Chargers job.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid apparently has a winning record against his former assistant coaches, so that’d be a potential silver lining to this situation. Still, you’d hate to see Bieniemy go to a team within the division with a rising star at the quarterback position.

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy turns down Colorado HC job

Bieniemy will officially be staying with the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2020 NFL season.

The Kansas City Chiefs won’t have to conduct a late search for a new offensive coordinator.

After a few weeks of subtle courting, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy has officially told the University of Colorado that he is not interested in becoming their head coach. Bieniemy’s decision was first reported by Mike Klis of KUSA and has since been confirmed by Yahoo Sports and ESPN. While Bieniemy never took a formal interview with Colorado officials, it was clear that he was among their top choices.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that Bieniemy felt his situation in Kansas City was too good to leave. He’ll likely be a candidate for head coaching vacancies in the NFL following the 2020 season.

Previous reports tell us that Bieniemy did his background work on the Colorado position. It’s his alma mater and he has previous assistant coaching experience at the organization. In a different situation, it’d likely be the perfect fit.

At the end of the day, this was an easy choice for Bieniemy.  He’ll continue biding his time for an NFL head coaching job while working alongside one of the greatest head coaches in NFL history and one of the most prolific young quarterbacks the game has ever seen. That type of experience will go a lot further than any head coaching opportunity in the NCAA.

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy could be considered for University of Colorado head coach vacancy

Bieniemy played college football and coached at the University of Colorado in the past, could he become a head coach at the college level?

The University of Colorado suddenly has a head coaching vacancy after former head coach Mel Tucker left the program to become the head coach for Michigan State. It’s extremely late in the process, with recruiting classes already composed and coaches entrenched in their jobs. Colorado will have an exceptionally difficult job, going out and hiring a coach at this point. However, there’s at least one coach with ties to the university that seems like a logical replacement.

That coach, of course, is Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieneimy. Bieniemy played for the Buffaloes from 1987-90 and was a standout. He has also been the running backs coach and offensive coordinator for the university before separate stints in the NFL.

Everyone around the league is making the connection from Colorado to Bieniemy and most expect them to at least reach out and gauge his interest.

After two rounds of no luck in the NFL head coaching carousel, could Bienemy leave to be a head coach in college football? It seems unlikely that— after winning a Super Bowl — Bieniemy would leave the NFL for the college coaching ranks. In the past, being a member of Andy Reid’s staff practically guarantees a head coaching opportunity. So far, Bieniemy has been the exception to that rule. He took interviews with five or six teams over the past two seasons but to no avail.

The question we should all be asking is this: Has Bieniemy’s patience with the NFL hiring process worn thin? Perhaps he’ll feel that he has a better chance to become a head coach in the NFL if he can prove that he can do it successfully at the collegiate level.

Working in the shadow of Reid without being a play-caller hasn’t done him any favors so far. At the same time, Bieniemy is in the prime position to be a head coaching candidate in the NFL again in 2021. Would that change if he went to Colorado this year? Another thing to consider is that he won’t be working with the best quarterback in all of football in any place but Kansas City. Ultimately, if Colorado does reach out to Bieniemy, he’ll be faced with a difficult decision that could decide his football future.

Notre Dame Football: Tommy Rees to Call Plays for Camping World Bowl

We thought we had a pretty good idea as to who would call plays a few weeks ago when Chip Long was removed as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator and on Thursday, Brian Kelly made things official before practice.

We thought we had a pretty good idea as to who would call plays a few weeks ago when Chip Long was removed as Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator and on Thursday, Brian Kelly made things official before practice.

Former Notre Dame quarterback and current quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees will handle the play-calling duties in Saturday’s Camping World Bowl versus Iowa State.

It’s hardly surprising as his was the first name mentioned the second we found out about the Long news.

Rees was given an interview for the Northwestern O-C opening earlier this month but didn’t make the second round of interviews with Pat Fitzgerald.

Is this an actual audition or is it a “just don’t mess entirely up and the job is yours” type of thing?  I’m curious to know.

What I do know is that earlier today Texas hired Ohio State’s passing game coordinator Matt Yurcich to be their new offensive coordinator.  I know stars make plays but that offense has been pretty much entirely unstoppable all season long, making the transition from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day even smoother than the biggest Ohio State fans in the land could have missed.

This is purely feel and based on nothing I’ve heard but I would be pretty surprised if Rees doesn’t have the O-C title come next August so I’m not walking away today stunned or shocked by any means, I’d be more-so if they did go on a national search for their next O-C like Kelly has said they’re going to do.
