6 most surprising cuts from Bears’ 53-man roster

The Bears assembled their 53-man roster, cutting many players in the process. Here are the six most surprising cuts.

Week 1 of the regular season is just around the corner, and excitement is hitting a fever pitch. The Chicago Bears will face the loathsome Green Bay Packers to kick off the season, and fans are more than ready to turn the page on the preseason and get ready for a long year of Chicago football.

Before the festivities begin, however, the Bears had to make some tough decisions to whittle down the roster to the NFL’s mandated 53 players. While the vast majority of players Chicago waived didn’t make too many headlines, the team did make a couple of surprise cuts.

From standout rookies to shocking releases that continue to strangle an already weak position, here are the team’s six most surprising cuts.

6 standout Bears from Day 1 of joint practice with Colts

With the first day of Bears-Colts joint practices in the books, here are the players who impressed on Wednesday.

The Chicago Bears traveled to Indianapolis to hold a joint practice with the Colts this Wednesday ahead of their preseason matchup on Saturday.

It’s only natural that tempers would flare when the two teams are finally allowed to go all out, and the teams definitely butted heads – rookie cornerback Tyrique Stevenson introduced the Colts’ Troy Brown to his physical style, resulting in some trash talk between the two Midwest teams.

The Bears carried over their strong performance against the Titans to the Colts’ practice field, as the team competed to the fullest of their ability. With that being said, let’s examine the six stand out players in the Bears joint practice with the Colts.

5 standout Bears on Day 9 of training camp

With Day 9 of Bears training camp in the books, here are the players who impressed on Saturday.

The ninth practice of Chicago Bears training camp is officially in the books, and it seems that it was a rough day for both the offense and defense.

In all honesty, it would be easier to list what went wrong for the Bears on Saturday: Muffed punts, dropped passes, multiple fights, etc. A down day for the team doesn’t mean there weren’t some positive takeaways, however.

Let’s get into the five Bears players who stood out on the ninth day of training camp.

Bears 2022 WR review: New faces fail to make a difference

Our next Bears position review focuses on the wide receivers, a group that featured many new players who disappointed as a whole.

The Chicago Bears wrapped the 2022 season with a 3-14 record, which culminated in a 10-game losing streak. But there’s still reasons to be optimistic about the future, including a boatload of salary cap space, the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft and the emergence of quarterback Justin Fields.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position through the 2022 Bears and grading every player. After looking at quarterbacks and running backs, we’re staying on offense with the wide receivers, a group that featured many new faces but disappointed as a whole in 2022.

10 Bears on the roster bubble who need strong performances vs. Browns

There are a number of Bears players on the roster bubble who need to impress in the preseason finale against the Browns.

The Chicago Bears will wrap the preseason against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, and there are a number of players vying for roster spots and starting jobs.

While the starters will play the first half, there are a number of players on the roster bubble who will get their opportunities to show why they’re deserving of a roster spot — whether it’s with Chicago or another team.

Ahead of Chicago’s preseason finale, we’re taking a look at some roster bubble players to keep an eye on against Cleveland:

Improvement needed after Seahawks drop 2nd preseason game 27-11

The Seattle Seahawks have plenty of work to do to get ready for their preseason finale after dropping Thursday’s game to the Chicago Bears.

Even by already-low preseason standards, the Seattle Seahawks played a very uninspiring game of football. On Thursday night in front of the 12th Man for the first time this summer, the Seahawks fell to the visiting Chicago Bears 27-11 in their second preseason game.

Right from the get-go, the Seahawks were sloppy for most of the night and it cost them dearly. Some late-game magic with a botched Bears punt return and recovered onside kick weren’t able to overcome Seattle’s slow start.

In fairness to the Seahawks, they did play last Saturday night in Pittsburgh with a quick turnaround to a Thursday. The exceptionally short week of practice and lack of key starters playing meaningful time would make it difficult for any team to play a competent game.

Regardless, there is more than enough room for improvement for the Seahawks before their preseason finale next Friday in Dallas.

Bears announce trade for WR Jakeem Grant, waive WR Nsimba Webster

The Bears officially announced the trade for WR Jakeem Grant and waived WR Nsimba Webster.

The Chicago Bears officially announced the acquisition of wide receiver Jakeem Grant from the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon. Grant was traded to the Bears from Miami for an undisclosed draft pick and still needs to pass a physical.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported the deal earlier in the day, which he noted was for a 2023 sixth-round pick.

To make room for Grant, the Bears waived wide receiver and return specialist Nsimba Webster, who had served as the team’s primary punt returner through four weeks of the season.

A 2016 sixth-round pick out of Texas Tech, Grant joins the Bears after spending six seasons with the Dolphins and figures to become a key component in the return game. Grant spent most of his Dolphins career as the primary kick and punt returner. He has 2 kickoff return touchdowns and 3 punt return touchdowns and holds multiple franchise records. In 2020, Grant was named second-team All-Pro at punt returner.

Grant replaces Webster as the Bears punt returner after being signed just prior to the start of the 2021 regular season. Webster returned four punts, averaging just 3.3 yards per return in four games this season before being waived.

In addition to those moves, the Bears also announced they re-signed running back Artavis Pierce to the practice squad and waived linebacker Rashad Smith.

5 things to know about new Bears WR Nsimba Webster

The Bears added a new return specialist on Wednesday. Here are 5 things to know about the newest Bear, a Webster.

After being waived by the San Francisco 49ers, the Chicago Bears claimed wide receiver Nsimba Webster on Wednesday. Webster, 25, is an undrafted return specialist who played for the Rams in 2019 and 2020.

Here are five things to know about the newest member of the Bears:

Breaking down the Bears’ latest roster moves

The Bears made quite a few roster moves on Wednesday, which we’re breaking down right here.

The Chicago Bears have been busy over the last couple of days, finalizing their initial 53-man roster, placing players on injured reserves, bringing back players on the active roster and building their practice squad.

Following the initial 53-man roster, the Bears made six roster moves — with one more in progress — on the 53-man roster on Wednesday, as well as brought back plenty of familiar faces on the practice squad.

Here’s a look at all the roster moves Chicago made on Wednesday:

Bears claim WR Nsimba Webster off waivers from 49ers

The Bears claimed WR Nsimba Webster, who should serve as a special teams contributor returning kicks.

With cutdowns taking place around the NFL, a handful of talented players hit the waiver wire with the potential to be claimed from teams across the league. If a team claims a player, they must join the 53-man roster.

The Chicago Bears put a claim in on wide receiver Nsimba Webster from the San Francisco 49ers.

The addition appears to be primarily a special teams move, as Webster specializes in returning kicks. Last season with the Los Angeles Rams, Webster returned 25 punts (7.4-yard average) and 16 kickoffs (21.7-yard aberage) while playing only 8 offensive snaps.

The Bears are in need of a punt returner after they waived rookie Dazz Newsome, who was the primary punt returner. Wide receiver Damiere Byrd was listed as the backup punt returner.

All 21 players the Bears placed on waivers, including wide receiver Dazz Newsome, cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. and outside linebacker Charles Snowden, were not claimed. Expect to see a good number of those players, including those just mentioned, back with the Bears on the practice squad.
