Notre Dame continues to face Big Ten foes, heads to Northwestern tonight

The Irish close out their non-conference regular season in Evanston

The Irish have faced off against multiple Big Ten teams this spring, which has included games against Michigan State (three times), Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. The Irish’s next B1G opponent, Northwestern, were supposed to square-off in March in South Bend but a myriad of issues prevented that game from happening.

This game will have a different location, Evanston, Illinois, as the #8 Irish enter the contest with a 31-11 record, their opponent Wildcats are a few games under .500 at 22-25.

If the stats go right, the Irish should get yet another road victory. Under head coach [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag], Notre Dame has a .711 (32-13) winning percentage on the road. Their pitching staff as a whole has been phenomenal all season, ranked currently at the 14th best ERA in the country, allowing just 3.76 runs per game.

This is the start of the last road trip for the Irish, as they will finish the regular season in Coral Gables, Florida as they are set to square off in their last ACC series. At the current moment, Jarrett’s team hold a slim .5 game lead over Louisville for the Atlantic division lead.

The winning streak ends, Notre Dame baseball drops contest against MSU

The Irish drop a game in the home of the Tigers

The Irish were streaking once again but their most recent run came to a halt this evening in Comerica Park, the home of MLB’s Detroit Tigers. Notre Dame didn’t play against the big league club, instead facing off against Michigan State for the second time this year.

The first game went the Irish’s way, winning 2-1, but it was the Spartans that held a late 2-1 after five innings. The Irish would tied the game at 2 in the top of the sixth, but that would be their last runs as MSU scored four unanswered run to ultimately defeat the Irish 6-2 and stop their current five-game winning streak.

The Irish didn’t treat this game like a normal mid-week contest, trotting out their normal starting lineup and sending out some of their better pitchers to the mound. Unfortunately, the two early runs MSU scored were unearned, the final run also unearned. It was very uncharacteristic of the Irish, as their defense coming into the game was fourth in the country according to fielding percentage.

The loss puts their season record at 26-9 with their next contest back in South Bend against Boston College. The three game set begins on Friday at 5:00pm EST and concludes on Sunday at 1pm.

Notre Dame completes comeback, baseball team sweeps Wake Forest

WOW, what a comeback for the Irish

After the top of the fifth inning, it very much looked like the Irish’s modest four-game winning streak would come to an end after Wake Forest took at 8-2 lead. The Notre Dame hitters had something else to say about that, as they soon went to work.

The Irish battled back and after five innings, trailed 8-7, but they were going to need more eventually. The Demon Deacons scored three in the top of the sixth then the Irish answered back with on, for a 11-8 score at the end of the inning. The visitors would tack on another run in the top of the seventh before the Irish bats once again woke up with a four spot in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 12. Jack Zyska with the biggest hit of that inning, his three-run homer, his second on the day, tied the game.

A single by Carter Putz in the bottom of the ninth would close the heroics for the Irish as they at one time erased a six-run Wake Forest lead. This comeback was one that many will not forget, especially Zyska.

The win improved gave the Irish eleven straight wins at home and a perfect 5-0 home stand. Their winning streak also has reached five games and their ACC record is now at 11-7.

Notre Dame is back on the road on as they travel north to face Michigan State in Comerica Park, the home of MLB’s Detroit Tigers. They will then return to South Bend as Boston College comes into town for a weekend series beginning Friday afternoon.

On the day of the Blue vs. Gold game, Notre Dame baseball wins by football score

This was certainly a football score

Notre Dame 21, Wake Forest 3. Sounds like a football score right? Well, that wasn’t the case as the Irish baseball scored three touchdowns worth of runs against the visiting Demon Deacons while allowing just a field goal.

The offensive outburst was the highest run total of the year for Link Jarrett’s team as they were led by catcher David LaManna, who had two hits, one for a home run, and drove in five. Jack Brannigan, Brady Gumpf and Zack Prajzner also hit long balls for the Irish, who scored in every inning except for the fifth with multiple runs in the first, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh.

Starter Austin Temple wasn’t as sharp as we have seen him, but he didn’t need to be. He allowed two runs spanning 4.1 innings and then the bullpen took over. Another unearned run charged to Jack Findlay would be the only other damage the Irish pitchers would allow.

It was a great win for the Irish, who pushed their winning streak to four games and their record to 25-8. They improved to 10-7 in ACC as well. The win gives Notre Dame a series win but they will go for the sweep tomorrow as the start time has changed and first pitch at Frank Eck Stadium will be at 11am EST.

The streak reaches three, Notre Dame Baseball takes game 1 against Wake Forest

The Irish are streaking again, one hits three games

The streaks for this years Irish baseball team have been odd to say the least. Aside from the first series of the year, Link Jarrett’s team has either won multiple games in-a-row or lost them in the same fashion.

After a terrible road series at Duke, where the Irish lost each game, they turned around and won their two mid-week home games before Wake Forest came to South Bend. The Irish’s streaky ways continued, as they defeated the Demon Deacons 8-3 on Friday night, extending their winning streak to 3-games, while improving their overall record to 24-8. They moved to two-games over .500 in ACC play as well, with a 9-7 record in conference.

Ace John Michael Bertrand was great again, as he allowed just five hits and one walk, two runs with one earned. He stuck out four before giving way to Alex Rao, allowed a run in 2.1 innings, and Jackson Dennies who finished off Wake.

Offensively Jack Zyska led the way with three hits, an RBI and two runs. David LaManna also scored twice while Jack Brannigan drove in two.

The series continues this afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium at 2pm EST, and if you on campus for the Blue vs. Gold game, head on over after and check out the Irish baseball team.

The streak is over, Notre Dame Baseball loses series opener to Duke

The Irish will try to start a new winning streak tomorrow

The Irish haven’t lost since the end of March but the host Duke Blue Devils wanted to make the Irish feel defeat in April and that’s exactly what happened. In game one of the three game ACC conference battle, the home team took it to the Irish, defeating the visitors 15-5.

It was one that the Irish would like to have back as starting pitcher Will Mercer struggled out of the gate. He gave up three runs in the first inning, the only one he would pitch in, then Radek Birkholz also gave up three, one of them unearned, and the Irish had an early 6-0 hole to dig out of.

The Irish would battle back to get within two runs after their four run fifth, but would score just once more as Duke kept piling on the runs. Link Jarrett has switched up his starters and with a Thursday start, he went with Mercer, a move he might be regretting this evening as the nine-game winning streak came to an end.

Fortunately for the Irish, game two of the series will have ace John Michael Bertrand on the mound as they look to start a new winning steak. Notre Dame still holds a fantastic 21-6 record, but have had their struggles in-conference this season, just 8-6 so far. They look to change that tomorrow as first pitch is set for 6pm EST.

Notre Dame Baseball beats Michigan, keeps winning streak alive

The winning streak is just short to two handfuls

For the most part, midweek home games shouldn’t be much of a challenge, they’re set up to get the younger players and pitchers some playing time. That’s not always the case, especially when you are hosting a team that went to the College World Series finale just two seasons ago.

For the Irish baseball team, over the last two seasons, they have emerged as the Midwest baseball power, overtaking Michigan for that honor. Those two teams faced off against each other on Tuesday night at Frank Eck Stadium, and Irish slugged their way to a 14-5 victory, extending their winning streak to 9 games.

The Irish bats stayed hot all game, Spencer Myers hit a homer and drive on four runs, Brooks Coetzee had two hits and 3 RBI, while Zack Prajzner had just one hit but also drove in three.

The Irish used five pitchers on the day, with Jack Findlay, Aidan Tyrell and Radek Birkholz each having clean outings. Jackson Dennies and Liam Simon struggled but the Irish hitters picked them up.

The Irish have yet to lose in the month of April, racking up nine straight wins to run their record to an impressive 21-5. The winning streak goes on the road this weekend as Link Jarrett’s team heads to Durham, North Carolina to face Duke this weekend in ACC conference play.

Notre Dame takes game one vs Clemson, game two start time changed

The steak hits six-games for the Irish who look for seven today

The Irish got off to a great start against ACC foe Clemson, as John Michael Bertrand continued to show why is the ace of the Notre Dame pitching staff. The game start time was changed but not JMB’s performance, for the second straight start not allowing a run. The lefty was magnificent, going 8 and 1/3 innings, striking out eight Tigers and getting the win.

Although Bertrand did allow a run, it was unearned, it was exactly what you wanted to see from your game one starter. Saving the bullpen, Ryan McLinksey pitched just 2/3 of an inning on two pitches, sets up the Irish very well for the remainder of the series.

Offensively, three players had two hits each, Spencer Myers, Jack Brannigan and Brooks Coetzee. Myers and Brannigan along with Nick Juaire each drove in a run.

For the second day in a row, the start time will be adjusted, as Saturday’s contest is now set to begin at 3pm EST at Frank Eck Stadium. The Irish look to keep their six-game winning streak alive as their record is a dazzling 18-5 as they are set to face the Tigers in game two with Austin Temple on the mound.

Clemson set to visit Notre Dame as Irish look to extend 5-game winning steak

The Irish have been streaky this season

It’s pretty safe to say that the Irish baseball team has been streaky this season after starting the season off with a 2-1 record. A ten-game winning streak, followed by a four-game losing streak lead right into the current five-game winning steak Link Jarrett’s team is on at the moment.

For the Irish to keep their current steak alive, they’ll have to face a Clemson team that has been solid but not spectacular. The Tigers enter the series with a 19-9 record, but just 2-6 in ACC play. Their starters haven’t been as successful as Notre Dame’s, so the Irish have the clear advantage there, even without knowing who will start game three.

Ace John Michael Bertrand will be on the hill today, with Austin Temple on Saturday. Expect the other “starter” Aidan Tyrell to be active as well, but most likely out of the bullpen after the extremely successful experiment last weekend at Florida State.

Game one is set to begin at 4pm EST with admission free at Frank Eck Stadium. The game will be televised on the ACC Network as well.

Bring out the brooms, Notre Dame goes on the road and sweeps FSU

Break out the brooms!!!!

It seems like the extended time during the Irish baseball team’s four-game losing streak lit an fire for the team. They had ended the streak with a mid-week win over Northern Illinois, but those games are typically set for quality teams like the Irish to get a win and work on things.

Well, that work seemed to have paid off this weekend, going into Link Jarrett’s alma mater and sweeping Florida State. A Friday night 2-0 extra inning win was followed up by another nail-bitter on Saturday, with the Irish winning 5-4.

With the series already in hand the visitors could have mailed in the finale and still gone home with a very impressive set against the Seminoles. They wanted more however, and finished off the series sweep with a get-away-day 9-7 win.

Both team traded three-run first innings, but the Irish took the lead in the top of the third with two more runs and did enough to scratch out the win. Aidan Tyrell was the biggest story of the weekend for the Irish, not starting like he has been all season, but being a massive weapon off out of the bullpen. The lefty pitched a scoreless inning Friday night, got the day off on Saturday and then fired four and two-thirds of one-run pitching after stater Austin Temple struggled out of the gate.

Offensively, it was Carter Putz and Ryan Cole each blasting a home-run, with Cole driving in three. Putz and Brooks Coetzee also drove in two runs themselves.

The sweep put the Irish back over .500 in ACC play, 5-4, and extended their overall record to 16-5 on the season. They will most likely rise in the polls when they are updated early this week.
