ESPN names this freshman as as bright spot for Notre Dame basketball

The future is bright for this Irish freshman guard

Although Notre Dame basketball has struggled to a 6-7 record in Micah Shrewsberry’s first year, there has been a bright spot.

ESPN recently looked at the freshman classes impact (subscription required), and named guard [autotag]Marcus Burton[/autotag] as a surprise player. The first-year player from Mishawaka has averaged 15.9 points-per-game while chipping in 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Jeff Borzello, who compiled the list, noted that “Burton has been a bright spot,” giving the Irish hope for the future of the program. As a recruit, the in-state star was ranked as a 3-star, the No. 21 point guard and 153rd overall prospect in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Although he’s on the smaller side, Burton has outperformed his recruiting rankings and has a bright future in South Bend.

Virginia hurts NCAA Tournament odds with rare loss to Notre Dame

The Virginia Cavaliers took a rare loss against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to move to 1-1 in ACC play.

Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry picked up his first conference win on Saturday in a 76-54 thrashing over Tony Bennett and Virginia.

The Fighting Irish move to 6-7 on the year and 1-1 in ACC play, while Virginia drops to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in conference.

It’s a rare win for Notre Dame, who came into the game trailing the all-time series 17-3 and who had only beat Virginia twice since Bennett took over.

Notre Dame’s 76 points is the second most surrendered by the Cavs and their notoriously excellent defense this season, behind only the 77 scored by Memphis.

Virginia didn’t just struggle on defense, they shot 38% from the field and only attempted 11 three pointers – making just two – despite being behind most of the game.

For Virginia a Quad 4 loss like this one seriously hurts their NCAA Tournament at-large hopes, as the Fighting Irish came into the day a whopping 239th in the NET.

For Notre Dame it’s a reminder that – while this season has had plenty of low points already – the future with coach Shrewsberry is bright.

Notre Dame basketball officially signs it’s 2024 recruiting class

Today was the first time that Notre Dame could officially speak about the players, as they are now members of the Irish hoops team.

Find out below each of the signees, where the team ranked nationally, and what Shrewsberry had to say following the players joining the Notre Dame family.

Five-star Trey McKenney talks Notre Dame offer, offseason training

Trey McKenney updates on his offseason workouts and his recent offer from Notre Dame.

For Trey McKenney, this was an offseason of growth and development. It has been evidenced in his recruitment with McKenney pulling in a number of offers this summer.

Since mid-August, McKenney has been offered by Tennessee followed by Notre Dame and most recently, Oklahoma. Those trio of programs join his previous offers that include Georgetown, Missouri, Ole Miss, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Rutgers

McKenney is a five-star recruit according to ESPN.com, and is the No. 10 recruit in the nation according to the On3 Industry Rankings. This week, he made the ESPN 60 for the 2025 recruiting class.

The offer from Notre Dame definitely stood out to McKenney, who says it was a long time coming.

“I’ve been talking to Notre Dame for a while now,” McKenney told USA TODAY High School Sports. “I kept showing them that I’m a good player and I’m a good person.”

He is a 6-foot-4 guard from St. Mary’s (Flint, MI). He plans on taking several official visits this fall including Georgetown, Missouri, Ole Miss and Rutgers. Two future Big Ten programs, USC and UCLA, are also possibilities for official visits.

This summer, McKenney played in the Nike EYBL for The Family. He showed a versatile skillset that includes the ability to drive, penetrate, create his own shot, get to the rim and some good range to his game.

With his rise in the recruiting rankings, McKenney has seen increased attention off the court as well as on i.

“Just always being a focal point on the other team helps you grow, helps you read the game even more. Just being able to read the game took my game to a different level,” McKenney said.

“Basically (taught me) that I can push through when I’m tired and I can give my best.”

“It is definitely fun being the other guy, it is a respect thing. When you see that, I don’t back down. It fuels me. Definitely click into another level when the other team is trying to stop you.”

4-star power forward Garrett Sundra commits to Notre Dame hoops

Today, Notre Dame joined the group by adding one of their own.

The summer months were quiet, but basketball recruiting is beginning to pick up again as we approach fall. Over the last few days, Missouri and USC have secured commitments from four-star recruits in the class of 2024. Today, Notre Dame joined the group by adding one of their own.

Here’s how Paul VI Catholic (Va.) four-star power forward Garrett Sundra announced his commitment to the Fighting Irish earlier today.

Sundra is billed as a versatile big man with a soft touch, per Adam Finkelstein’s scouting report.

“Sundra’s ability to stretch the floor, pass the basketball, pick-and-pop, and potential to be an inside-out scoring threat as he develops his body and gets more assertive, should be an ideal fit. He has all the necessary tools and skills to develop into the type of modern day, versatile big man that Shrewsberry values and wants to deploy at Notre Dame.”

Sundra had offers from 14 other programs, including Butler, Maryland, Miami, Rhode Island, Seton Hall and Villanova. Going by the 247Sports composite rankings, Sundra is No. 90 nationally, No. 17 at his position and No. 4 overall in the state of Virginia.

That makes two hard commits for Notre Dame’s class of 2024. The other is IMG Academy (Fla.) four-star shooting guard Cole Certa.

Notre Dame basketball trending for transfer forward

The Irish could be adding another hoops transfer soon

It wasn’t a surprise when [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] basketball hired [autotag]Micah Schrewsberry[/autotag] that he would need to work the transfer portal to field a solid team in the fall.

So far the plan has worked well, with [autotag]Kebba Njie[/autotag] and [autotag]Julian Roper[/autotag] as verbals from the portal. There could very well be another name added with those two, forward Tae Davis.

The Seton Hall transfer is schedule to be on campus today and tomorrow, and Schrewsberry could get a verbal from Davis before he leaves campus. According to this report by 247Sports Tom Loy, he believes that the 6-foot, 9-inch and 200 pound forward will eventually commit to the Irish.

During his freshman year, Davis averaged 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in just over 13 minutes played. He would have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Notre Dame basketball commit named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball

Congrats to the future Irish guard

Although Mishawaka, Indiana point guard [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] signed with [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] long before [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] was named the new coach, there wasn’t any wavering in his commitment.

Burton had a huge senior season for Penn High School averaging 30.2 points, 4.6 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.3 steals per game. He led PHS to a 28-2 overall record, 11-0 in conference.

That effort was enough for Burton to be recognized as the states best basketball player, today being named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball.

The 5-foot, 10-inch and 170 pound floor general is rated as the 18th best point guard and 147th overall player in the country according to the 247Sports composite. Burton was the only signee for the Irish in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Yale basketball transfer is considering a move to Notre Dame

Who will be Shrewberry’s first addition?

The basketball transfer season really won’t hit it’s stride until next weekend but new [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] has to be looking at who could potentially join the team next year.

One of those transfers could be Yale forward [autotag]EJ Jarvis[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 8-inch and 220 pound wing really came into his own this past season. He shot 55% from the field, 40.6% from beyond the arc and grabbed over 5 rebounds per game.

There is no question that Jarvis will qualify for the transfer academically, the real question is how would his skills translate to a higher level of competition once a move is made.

Notre Dame sets up in-home visit with Syracuse transfer guard

The Irish are in the mix for former Orangemen sharp shooter

There is a good amount of roster reconstruction that new [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] head coach [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] has in front of him.

Some of that will come via the transfer portal and the Irish are already making waves on that end. Syracuse graduate transfer [autotag]Joseph Girard III[/autotag] entered the portal on March 24th, and now has three scheduled in-home visits with potential landing spots.

Notre Dame is one of those, along with Clemson and BYU who are trying to lure the 6-foot, 1-inch and 190 pound shooter to their team. Girard III shot 38.1% from 3 last year and 40.3% from the field while hitting 85.7% of his free throws. Not only that, he contributed almost 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

Watch: Notre Dame Leprechaun makes snow angel by Touchdown Jesus

Who wouldn’t do this in the snow?

While the first day of spring is coming soon, we still very much are in winter. People in Midwest cities like South Bend won’t experience true warmth consistently for some time, probably in May. That means the possibility for snow remains strong, and it fell on Notre Dame’s campus Friday. With the men’s basketball team’s season over and the women awaiting Selection Sunday, the Notre Dame Leprechaun took the opportunity to set up shop in front of Touchdown Jesus and make a snow angel:

Sometimes, you just have to live your best life, and the Leprechaun is doing just that. He doesn’t need to be on a warm beach somewhere. He just needs to do what he can with the elements that choose to find their way to Notre Dame. If that means making a snow angel, you make a snow angel.

We know you can’t wait for summer, but let’s do that a little longer and think of all the good that winter provides.
