North Dakota State unleashed 4 fullbacks in lineup for amazing touchdown run

North Dakota State unleashed four fullbacks on this awesome touchdown run.

Fullbacks are people, too!

Long football’s most underappreciated position, the North Dakota State Bison showed the love to the big boys Saturday by unleashing a four-fullback set in its game against the Youngstown State Penguins.

The lead fullback on the play, senior Hunter Luepke, joined his fullback brethren on the gridiron on a fourth-and-one red zone chance for the Bison. The play call called for Luepke to get the handoff, and his fellow fullbacks and offensive linemen to bulldoze the way forward.

The football gods smiled on North Dakota State’s respect for the fullback, granting Luepke a clear lane to scamper in for a touchdown.

The score got the Bison up on the Penguins 14-0 to close out the first quarter.

North Dakota State instantly shouted out the four-fullback touchdown play. Even the Bison’s merch shows great respect for the fullbacks on the team.

A Walter Payton Award candidate, Luepke has already had a phenomenal start to the season at fullback for the Bison. He’s rushed for 333 yards and six touchdowns and hauled in an additional 87 yards and two scores in the air through four games. Saturday’s fullback-friendly touchdown only adds to his possible candidacy for the top award in FCS for an offensive player.

The 3-1 Bison will try to hold on to their lead over the Penguins heading into the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game.

A win puts them at 4-1, and adds further proof to the power of the fullback.

FCS Championship: North Dakota State vs Montana State Game Preview

Why Montana State Will Win

Montana State did the work for the North Dakota State, taking out a South Dakota State team that handed the Bison their only loss of the year.

The Bobcats got a massive day from QB Tommy Mellott in his amazing run through the FCS playoffs.

Starting quarterback Matt McKay entered the transfer portal just before the playoff started, Mellott stepped in and has been brilliant with four touchdown passes and no picks to go along with 339 rushing yards and six scores over the three games.

His job is to keep on running – and not turn the ball over.

The Montana State offense was among the best in the FCS in turnover margin helped by a fantastic offensive front that doesn’t allow much of anything in the backfield.

The formula is simple for the Bobcats. Don’t make mistakes – they don’t get penalized – rely on the defense, make tons of timely plays in the backfield, and capitalize on everything.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, National Championships

Why North Dakota State Will Win

North Dakota State can play that game, too.

Turnovers aren’t a problem for the Bison. There aren’t enough flags to get into a twist over, and the defense led the nation in points allowed throughout the FCS season.

The formula for North Dakota State is simple. Own third downs on both sides of the ball. Repeat.

The offense can put up points in bunches, but it’s the other side of the ball that should be able to take over. The D allowed over 24 points just once all year – the 27-19 loss to South Dakota State – and allowed 20 or fewer in 13 games.

The D has been on a dominant run in the FCS playoffs – allowing 24 points over the three games – and now it gets to focus on stopping Mellott, unless …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Montana State get healthy again?

It was able to get by South Dakota State without a few key parts, but the one guy it needs to have back is leading rusher Isaiah Ifanse – who ran for over 1,500 yards and ten scores, but missed the South Dakota State game.

The Bobcats have been able to find ways all year to push through bumps and bruises, and they got through the late-season quarterback change.

However, North Dakota State is too good defensively to let anyone in the Montana State backfield go off.

Mellott has been great, but he’s not going to be able to bomb away quite like he did against South Dakota State. He’ll be fine, though, and the defense will keep this game in range throughout.

North Dakota State will control things just a wee bit more.

Tennessee Titans 2021 NFL draft pick profile: OT Dillon Radunz

A full breakdown of what the Titans are getting in Dillon Radunz.

With the 53rd pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans selected the vicious and athletic offensive lineman from North Dakota State, Dillon Radunz.

The Titans finally have a premier talent on the right side of their offensive line, something this regime clearly has prioritized over its tenure.

The North Dakota State product joins an extremely talented offensive line room that includes a perennial Pro Bowl left tackle, a former All-Pro left guard, and a center/right guard duo who both received All-Pro votes just a season ago.

With all that said, let’s take a deeper dive into how Radunz fits into what Tennessee loves to do upfront.

Twitter reacts to Titans’ pick of OT Dillon Radunz in Round 2

Here’s what Twitter thinks about the Titans’ pick of OT Dillon Radunz.

The Tennessee Titans have found their right tackle of the future in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft with the selection of offensive tackle Dillon Radunz out of North Dakota State.

After swinging and missing badly with Isaiah Wilson last year, the Titans needed a new long-term answer on the right side, especially after the release of Dennis Kelly this offense.

Radunz fits the mold of that kind of player. He has great size (6-foot-6, 299 pounds), athleticism and the right level of nasty to be a successful starter upfront for years to come.

Adding to those traits, Radunz specializes in, you guessed it, blocking for the run. There are some experts out there who believe he could even play guard.

Shortly after the Titans made their pick, Twitter reacted to the move. As you would expect, the pick of Radunz received mixed reactions, partly because many in Titans circles understandably wanted a wide receiver in this spot.

North Dakota State vs Sam Houston FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why North Dakota State Will Win

Just when it seemed like Eastern Washington was in control of the first round FCS playoff game against North Dakota State (7-2), the national title level kicked in for the home side.

The Bison roared back for a 42-20 win with 35 unanswered points thanks to a running game that ripped off big dash after big dash on the way to 433 yards while holding on to the ball for over 35 minutes.

Sam Houston (7-0) had to hang on for dear life in a 21-15 win over Monmouth in a rough day for the O. Monmouth ended up holding the ball for almost 40 minutes as it finally broke through for 15 fourth quarter points and a shot to win, but …

Why Sam Houston Will Win

The Bearkat defense held on at the end and is just good enough to keep the North Dakota State running game from going off like it did against Eastern Washington.

The Bison ended up taking over by converting third down try after third down try, but the Sam Houston defense is among the best in the FCS at getting off the field on the big downs.

Monmouth had a little bit of success, but it didn’t run effectively enough to get in the game over the first three quarters. The Sam Houston defense brings a devastating pass rush that lives in the backfield and finished fourth in the nation against the run.

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t your North Dakota State team of the last few years, but it finds ways to get the job done.

It should’ve had more problems against Eastern Washington after the first 20 minutes, but the offensive line took over. It’s not going to do that this time around, and QB Cam Miller will have to do more than 6-of-11 for 50 yards, but the team will find a way.

The Bison have adjusted, tweaked, and figured out how to keep this all going even if it hasn’t been smooth. Sam Houston’s defense has the ability to be a brick wall of frustration, but the Bison – despite not being quite as good as the Bearkats – will grind it out and hang on to get into the FCS football final four.

North Dakota State vs Eastern Washington FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why Eastern Washington Will Win

Eastern Washington (5-1) needed a game to warm up, and then the passing game became the EWU passing game.

The Eagles had the third-best passing game in the FCS averaging 389 yards per game thanks to a massive run by Eric Barriere, a veteran who threw six picks but did just about everything else right. He threw for close to 2,200 yards with 18 touchdowns, showed off the big arm to push it deep, spread it around well, and did a great job cranking up the offense.

Now it has to roll against the Bison.

This is still a great North Dakota State team, but it’s not the killer of years past and it doesn’t have the big-time passing game to keep up in a shootout. NDSU is averaging a paltry 137 passing yards per game, but …

Why North Dakota State Will Win

The offensive line has taken over.

No, the North Dakota State (5-2) passing game hasn’t been anything great, but the ground game continues to be excellent, hitting over 200 yards in three of the seven games behind a front five that’s not allowing anything in the backfield.

The Bison defense is fine against the pass. It could stand to come up with more takeaways – just two interceptions in the seven game spring run – but the problem is against the run. NDSU is 5-0 when allowing fewer than 170 rushing yards and is 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Eastern Washington is about the passing game, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Eagles average 174 yards per game on the ground.

It’s never a positive to go against North Dakota State in a huge game, and there’s a shot the offensive line takes over and the team takes its level up a few notches, but Eastern Washington has too much offense along with the quarterback in Barriere.

This is a multi-level Eagle attack that can score in a variety of ways, and it has an offensive line that can hold up just line North Dakota State’s front five can.

No matter what – and forgetting that these two aren’t quite the superstars they normally are – this is the marquee matchup in the first round of the FCS Playoffs.

You’re never right to go against the Bison – especially at home – but …

North Dakota State (1-1) vs Missouri State (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS, go to BetMGM

Why North Dakota State Will Win

You really think North Dakota State is as mediocre as it looked in the first two games?

Yeah, Trey Lance really was that good and might be that irreplaceable, but he doesn’t play defense – Southern Illinois cranked up 443 yards in the 38-14 win over the Bison.

So why is any of this a positive? The offense that struggled so much over the first few games might not be its old explosive self, but it should be able to grind on a Missouri State defense that had problems with a Western Illinois passing game that isn’t supposed to be that great – MSU won 30-24 – and the Bear running game wasn’t great.

The line throughout the FCS spring season continues – assume North Dakota State isn’t North Dakota State because it was February football and not because the program has fallen off the map. However …

Why Missouri State Will Win

No, this really isn’t North Dakota State, but …

What if it is?

Zeb Noland has struggled – barely hitting half of his passes and with few big downfield plays – and the team only generated 268 yards of total offense in the loss to SIU. Worst of all, the defense couldn’t get off the field, allowing third down conversion after third down conversion as the Bison got destroyed in the time of possession battle – SIU had the ball for over 41 minutes.

Bobby Petrino’s Missouri State team might not be expected to come up with a massive season, but Jaden Johnson had a decent day throwing the ball and the defensive front was a wall, only allowing 1.6 yards per carry and 48 rushing yards.

What’s Going To Happen

This still won’t be the North Dakota State team that everyone wants, but it’ll come up with a workmanlike win over a Missouri State team that will hang around a bit, but will turn it over a few key times to screw it all up.
