Montana State is reportedly set to host the coldest College GameDay ever

It’s going to be a crisp Saturday morning in Bozeman.

ESPN’s College GameDay crew certainly isn’t a stranger to cold temperatures.

With routine November trips to Columbus and Ann Arbor for The Game (which it will likely take once again next weekend), the ESPN pregame show frequently finds itself filming on location in some pretty chilly spots.

But Saturday’s trip to Bozeman, Montana, for the appropriately named “Brawl of the Wild” between Montana State and bitter rival Montana will be on an entirely different level.

In what is already being heralded as the coldest College GameDay ever, temperatures could be in the single digits when the show begins at 9 a.m. ET. The low in Bozeman on Saturday is one degree Fahrenheit, which is actually an improvement from Friday’s low of nine below zero.

A logistics spokesperson for ESPN told Matt Brown of the Extra Points newsletter that some of the equipment used to prepare the set even froze on Friday.

Things should warm up a bit by the time the game starts, with temperatures reaching the 20s. So toasty.

Host Desmond Howard, a former Heisman winner at Michigan who is certainly accustomed to playing football games in cold weather, was asked about the frigid temperatures.

It’s always cool to see GameDay highlight an FCS program, especially when it’s for a storied rivalry like this one. But taking its first-ever trip to Montana on the third Saturday in November was quite a choice.

Still, the view from the set will make it all worth it. Maybe.

Montana State amazingly racked up record-breaking 4 (!!) safeties off Weber State’s terrible snaps

Four. Four?! Four!

Weber State did anything but playing it safe against Montana State.

The Wildcats struggled mightily with avoiding their own end zone against the Bobcats, with the latter recording a FCS-record four safeties during Saturday’s game in Bozeman.

It’s baffling to think about letting up more than one safety in a game, much less four. FOUR.

Yet, that’s the situation Weber State found itself in after the day’s fourth botched snap (?!) sent the ball hurling toward the end zone at the top of the third quarter to add another two points to Montana State’s tally. It has to be the strangest special teams failure for a football team this college football season.

How do you accidentally sabotage your own punt team so many times?

You can relive the other three botched-snaps-for-safeties below.

Per the official FCS stat sheet, it’s indeed a record for safeties in a single game with four.

Just looking at this broken down in a score-by-score sequence is bizarre enough on its own.

Seriously, though, you don’t win football games if you let up four safeties. That had to have been in the grand football rulebook when the game was drawn up all those years ago.

Hats off to Montana State, but it’s hard to qualify too much this as an accomplishment for the Bobcats. It seems much, much more like a Weber State face plant for the ages.

And the Wildcats ended up losing, 43-38.

FCS Championship: North Dakota State vs Montana State Game Preview

Why Montana State Will Win

Montana State did the work for the North Dakota State, taking out a South Dakota State team that handed the Bison their only loss of the year.

The Bobcats got a massive day from QB Tommy Mellott in his amazing run through the FCS playoffs.

Starting quarterback Matt McKay entered the transfer portal just before the playoff started, Mellott stepped in and has been brilliant with four touchdown passes and no picks to go along with 339 rushing yards and six scores over the three games.

His job is to keep on running – and not turn the ball over.

The Montana State offense was among the best in the FCS in turnover margin helped by a fantastic offensive front that doesn’t allow much of anything in the backfield.

The formula is simple for the Bobcats. Don’t make mistakes – they don’t get penalized – rely on the defense, make tons of timely plays in the backfield, and capitalize on everything.

However …

Why North Dakota State Will Win

North Dakota State can play that game, too.

Turnovers aren’t a problem for the Bison. There aren’t enough flags to get into a twist over, and the defense led the nation in points allowed throughout the FCS season.

The formula for North Dakota State is simple. Own third downs on both sides of the ball. Repeat.

The offense can put up points in bunches, but it’s the other side of the ball that should be able to take over. The D allowed over 24 points just once all year – the 27-19 loss to South Dakota State – and allowed 20 or fewer in 13 games.

The D has been on a dominant run in the FCS playoffs – allowing 24 points over the three games – and now it gets to focus on stopping Mellott, unless …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Montana State get healthy again?

It was able to get by South Dakota State without a few key parts, but the one guy it needs to have back is leading rusher Isaiah Ifanse – who ran for over 1,500 yards and ten scores, but missed the South Dakota State game.

The Bobcats have been able to find ways all year to push through bumps and bruises, and they got through the late-season quarterback change.

However, North Dakota State is too good defensively to let anyone in the Montana State backfield go off.

Mellott has been great, but he’s not going to be able to bomb away quite like he did against South Dakota State. He’ll be fine, though, and the defense will keep this game in range throughout.

North Dakota State will control things just a wee bit more.
