Wisconsin one of three Big Ten teams to achieve this stat since 2000

Wisconsin’s defense in 2021 was one of three Big Ten teams to achieve this stat since 2000:

On Wednesday night, Wisconsin on BTN released a statistic on Twitter showing the only Big Ten defenses to allow less than 65 rushing yards per game since 2000.

Wisconsin’s 2021 defense was one of the three listed alongside the 2003 Ohio and 2006 Michigan teams. The Badgers were able to terrorize opposing quarterbacks and frequently take down running backs in the backfield last season. This was of course thanks to the excellent individual performances of linebackers Leo Chenal, Nick Herbig and Jack Sanborn.

Hopefully, the Badgers’ defense can continue its historically great run into next season, even with some key players moving on to the NFL.

Three Badgers named to 2022 Phil Steele Preseason All-America Team

Phil Steele names three Wisconsin Badgers to his 2022 Preseason All-America Team:

On Thursday afternoon, Phil Steele of Phil Steel’s College Football Preview released his 2022 Preseason All-America Team, and he included three Wisconsin Badgers.

Outside linebacker Nick Herbig was the only Badger to make the first team, which is not surprising since he led Wisconsin in sacks last season. He was also added to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List less than a month ago.

Sophomore running back Braelon Allen and senior nose tackle Keeanu Benton were named to Steele’s fourth team, after both finishing last year as second-team All-Big Ten.

I am excited to see what Herbig and Benton will do after taking the reins of the Badgers’ defense, and of course, expectations are high for Allen after his outstanding freshman season.

The 2021 season for Wisconsin football was defined by a phenomenal defense based around suffocating the run game and getting after the quarterback.

Wisconsin had arguably the best pass rush in the country last season because of a great team effort and an emphasis at every position to sack the quarterback. In fact, two Badgers finished in the top five in the Big Ten last season in sacks.

Although the Badgers will be losing the critical pieces of linebackers Leo Chenal and Jack Sanborn this season, they will be returning six of their top 10 sack leaders from last year.

Below are Wisconsin football’s top 10 leaders in sacks from 2021:

Wisconsin outside linebacker Nick Herbig led all Badgers’ edge rushers with a 91.4 grade after a phenomenal season in 2021. Herbig finished last year with 61 total tackles, nine sacks, four pass deflections and a forced fumble. The rising junior was ranked ahead of former Wisconsin and current NFL outside linebackers, Joe Schobert and T.J. Watt.

After a phenomenal sophomore season, it will be exciting to see what Herbig can do with the keys to the Badgers’ defense this season.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy is awarded to the country’s best defensive player, representing the IMPACT acronym of integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity. Last season, former Wisconsin LB Jack Sanborn was also named to the award’s watch list.

It is outstanding to see another Wisconsin linebacker already being considered for such a prestigious award, and I would not be surprised to see Herbig on a few more award watch lists before the season starts.

Nick Herbig led all Big 10 EDGE rushers in this stat last season

Nick Herbig led all Big 10 EDGE rushers in this stat last season:

Coming off of a breakout sophomore campaign, itā€™s safe to say that Badgers outside linebacker Nick Herbig will find himself at the top of opposing teams scouting reports in 2022.

Last season, Herbig took his game to another level, quickly becoming a premier pass rusher on Jim Leonhardā€™s top ranked defensive unit.

In 636 total snaps, the 6-foot-2, 227-pound OLB totaled 57 tackles, 37 pressures, nine sacks, and six QB hits.

Per PFF, the Badgers star LB had a 27.3% pass rush win rate which led all Big Ten edge rushers last season.

The Kauai, Hawaii native is in line to be the face of the Badgers defense in 2022, and one of the most tenacious pass-rushers in the entire country.

Wisconsin offers Utah transfer safety Kamo’i Latu

The Badgers jump in on a Pac-12 transfer

The Badgers jumped in on Utah transfer safety Kamo’i Latu just a few days after he decided to enter the portal.

Wisconsin connections are there for the Hawaii product, as he was high school teammates with Badger star OLB Nick Herbig at Saint Louis High School in Honolulu.

Latu is a class of 2020 safety who was a three-star prospect according to 247Sports. Last season, he played in all 14 games for the Utes as they took home the Pac-12 championship and battled Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. He totaled 19 tackles and three passes defended, while making one start.

Herbig has already been doing his best to publicly recruit his high school teammate to Madison:
