Watch: Nick Folk hits 50-yard field goal as time expires to lift Patriots over Cardinals

Nick Folk delivers a game-winning kick for the New England Patriots

The 2020 season has not been easy on Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Yet, they stand at 5-6 after Nick Folk hit a 50-yard field goal as time expired Sunday to give the Pats a 20-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Patriots won despite Cam Newton throwing for 84 yards and a pair of interceptions. He was going up against Arizona’s Kyler Murray, who threw for 170 yards.

One of the key plays on the game-winning drive came when Arizona rookie Isaiah Simmons was flagged for unnecessary roughness with 56 seconds left after a 14-yard run by Newton on a third-and-13.

It’s Sarah Fuller Saturday as Vanderbilt player is celebrated

Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller is being celebrated as she gets ready to kick in an SEC game.

Sarah Fuller is the lone kicker listed on the Vanderbilt roster for its game with Missouri on Saturday. She is dressed out for the SEC game and ready to kick for the Commodores. Her moment is being appreciated.

Pats’ Nick Folk latest to win Player of the Week vs. Jets

Nick Folk won player of the week honors against the Jets, marking the sixth time that a player from a Jet opponent had done so.

Another week, another Player of the Week award for a Jets opponent.

This time it was Patriots kicker Nick Folk, who was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Folk made all three of his field goal attempts on Monday in New England’s 30-27 win over New York. The ex-Jet most notably nailed a 51-yarder as time expired to win the game.

Folk also made all three of his extra-point attempts.

Only nine weeks in, Folk is the sixth Jets opponent to win a Player of the Week award this season. The others include Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Jerry Hughes, Xavier Rhodes and Brandon McManus.

If New York was actually winning games on a consistent basis, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal. But the Jets are 0-9, and their opponents regularly being recognized at their expense only adds to the laughter.

The Jets have only been competitive in three of their losses, and that’s being generous. They had chances to win against the Bills — in their most recent matchup — Broncos and Patriots. In the other six losses, the Jets have been smoked with a point differential of -127. Overall, the Jets’ point differential stands at -147.

Fortunately for Gang Green, they’re on their bye this week, so no one can win Player of the Week against them. But when the Jets go face the Chargers in Week 11, look out for another award.

Throwback Thursday: Giants-Buccaneers has become a fun rivalry

In the latest Giants Wire Throwback Thursday, we look at three New York Giants-Tampa Bay Buccaneers games that have ignited this rivalry.

The New York Giants will meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this coming Monday night in a matchup that appears to be an uneven one. The 5-2 Bucs are soaring toward the top of the NFC while the 1-6 Giants are struggling to find their way.

Recent history tells us none of that means anything. If you’re smart, you might hop on the Giants train and take those 10.5 points this week.

The Giants and Bucs meet for a fourth straight season, and if recent trends hold true, this will be a whopper of a ballgame. The past three contests were decided by one, three and two points, respectively.

October 1, 2017: Buccaneers 25, Giants 23

It seems like 100 years ago that Ben McAdoo and Dirk Koetter were the coaches of these teams. The Giants came into Tampa 0-3 and would be in big trouble with a loss after qualifying for the playoffs the year before. The Bucs led 16-10 at halftime but the Giants took a 17-16 lead in the third quarter on a 4-yard pass from Eli Manning to running back Wayne Gallman.

Tampa would outscore the Giants 9-6 in the fourth quarter to win the game, 25-23. This battle was more about the points missed than the points scored.

Bucs kicker Nick Folk missed two field goals and a PAT. They also failed on a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. After the Giants took a 23-22 lead on a Manning-to-Rhett Ellison 2-yard touchdown pass with 3:16 remaining, the two-point conversion attempt was disallowed as it was ruled that wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. stepped out of bounds.

November 18, 2018: Giants 38, Buccaneers 35

The 2-7 Giants, led by new head coach Pat Shurmur, faced off against Koetter’s 3-6 Bucs at MetLife Stadium in an afterthought of a game that had no bearing on the playoff picture.

The Giants had a new weapon to throw at Tampa this time around, rookie running back Saquon Barkley, and he would score three touchdowns and rush 27 times for 142 yards in the game.

The Giants would open up a 31-14 lead on a Manning to Beckham 8-yard touchdown strike but the Bucs, behind erratic but explosive quarterback Jameis Winston, would come charging back with three fourth-quarter touchdowns. The Giants were able to stave them off and secure the victory, though.

September 22, 2019: Giants 32, Buccaneers 31

A new era in Giants history began when rookie Daniel Jones took over the starting quarterback job from Eli Manning. Jones had a storybook debut, rallying the Giants from an 18-point deficit to win the game on a quarterback keeper with 1:21 remaining in the quarter.

What most will ignore — or conveniently forget — is that Matt Gay’s 34-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game for Tampa, sailed wide right to give the Giants the win.

But Giants fans will revel in the legend more than the facts on this one and remember how the kid rose up and carried the team on his back for an impressive start to his career.

Report: Patriots promote Nick Folk to 53-man and establish him as the starter

Justin Rohrwasser will stay on the practice squad.

The New England Patriots have made Nick Folk their starting kicker. They promoted him to the 53-man roster on Tuesday, and intend to play him on Sundays for the foreseeable future, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Folk had been in a training camp position battle with kicker Justin Rohrwasser, a 2020 fifth-round pick, but the Patriots are apparently more comfortable riding with Folk. They kept the veteran on the expanded practice squad for Week 1, and he was one of the two players who were promoted for game action only, a new provision during COVID.

Folk missed a 45-yard kick but hit his three extra point attempts in the team’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Folk filled in for Stephen Gostkowski in 2019 after he suffered a season ending hip injury. Folk was 14 of 17 on field goals and he hit all 12 of his extra point attempts in 2019.

Patriots promote K Nick Foles onto the active roster ahead of Week 1

Folk has been promoted from the practice squad ahead of the opener.

The New England Patriots have their kicker for Sunday’s game against Miami. Nick Folk is being promoted to the active roster as reported by Mike Reiss.

There was some intrigue as to why the Patriots did not elect to have a kicker on their roster. For now, the situation appears set. According to new rules, teams can promote two players per week from the practice squad to the main roster. They can also send players to the practice squad two times without placing them on waivers.

Folk recorded five-of-five made field goal attempts in addition to 12-of-12 extra points in 2019 for New England. It will be interesting to see how he does this season, as the New England kicking game appears anything but stable at the moment.

Who will Bill Belichick use as Patriots’ kicker in Week 1?

Bill Belichick settled on Nick Folk as his kicker for the opening game against the Dolphins.

Bill Belichick pushed things almost as far as he could.

He cut both draft pick Justin Rohrwasser and Nick Folk last week, then re-signed each to the Patriots’ practice squad. Finally, Saturday, the great coach settled on his kicker for Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins in Foxboro on Sunday.

The Patriots decided to promote the veteran Folk to the active roster Saturday.

Folk kicked in seven games for the Patriots last season, replacing Mike Nugent who was signed after Stephen Gostkowski went down with a season-ending hip injury. Folk went 14-for-17 on field-goal attempts and made all 12 extra-point attempts.

Report: Patriots cut both kickers ahead of Week 1

The New England Patriots have cut both of their kickers.

In what has been a surprising day of cuts for the New England Patriots, they have overhauled their kicking game. Kickers Justin Rohrwasser and Nick Folk were both cut with the opener against the Dolphins a little more than a week away.

Rohrwasser played in 13 games in the 2018 and 2019 seasons with Marshall. His best season came in his senior year of 2019. He went 35-of-36 on extra points and 18-of-21 on field goals.  In both seasons, he scored 89 points. New England drafted him in the fifth round of this past April’s draft.

For Folk, this was about to be his second go-around with New England. In the 2019 season, he went 14-of-17 on field goals in seven games with the Patriots. He went 12-of-12 on extra points.

This currently leaves the New England Patriots without a kicker. It will be interesting to see who they pick up and how soon they make the acquisition.

Bill Belichick cuts both kickers from Patriots’ roster

The New England Patriots cut both their kickers as NFL teams reached the 53-man limit Saturday.

It is only called football. But who is to question a man with eight rings? Bill Belichick went through the final cuts for his New England Patriots Saturday.

And, he cut Nick Folk and Justin Rohrwasser among the two dozen names sent packing.

Why are Folk and Rohrwasser both being cut noteworthy? Because for the time being the Patriots have no kickers on their roster.

What is remarkable is how the kicking situation in Foxboro has changed in less than 12 months. For decades, Adam Vinatieri and Stephen Gostkowski were the only kickers New England knew.

And then last year Gostkowski was injured, IR’d and eventually released. He actually signed with the Tennessee Titans to be their kicker. He will be reunited with former Pat and current Titan coach Mike Vrabel in Tennessee.

So now, the always mysterious Pats have created another drama. Who will kick for New England?

After last season that saw the Patriots use four kickers, one can surmise Belichick wants to nail down the one who will help New England win without much excitement.

Kicking battle still up in the air

Sam Ficken or Brett Maher? The Bills have a kicking battle of their own going on in training camp, but its to be between two guys that are pretty talented. Drafted rookie Tyler Bass and long-time NFL kicker Stephen Hauschka. The Jets on the other hand have two lesser-known prospects going at it, Brett Maher and Sam Ficken.

In recent years, the Jets have had huge kicker struggles. Since releasing Nick Folks, Gang Green hasn’t figured that position out. So far through their training camp, who’s the front runner? Jets Wire reports things are “neck-and-neck” between the two at camp.

“Sam and Brett are doing a very nice job,” special teams coordinator Brant Boyer said. “I see this coming down to the end here.”

If you recall, now former Jets and Bills kicker Kaare Vedvik had a brutal Week 1 against Buffalo in 2019, handing the Bills the win. Who do the Jets play in Week 1 in 2020? The Bills… again.
