Colts’ Jeff Saturday: Kayvon Thibodeaux ‘trash’ for snow angel celebration

Indianapolis Colts coach Jeff Saturday says New York Giants LB Kayvon Thibodeaux is “trash” for his post-sack celebration of Nick Foles.

New York Giants rookie outside linebacker Kayvon Thibdodeaux is taking a lot of heat for his actions after sacking — and injuring — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Nick Foles in the Giants’ 38-10 win on Sunday.

Thibodeaux’s second-quarter sack of Foles knocked the veteran quarterback from the game but it was the celebration afterward that drew the ire of the Colts and critics around the league.

Foles was writhing in pain on the turf while the rookie did ‘snow angels’ right next to him, apparently unaware of the severity of Foles’ injuries.

Foles was subsequently carted off the field but that didn’t prevent Thibodeaux from continuing his celebration.

“Hopefully his teammates will — maybe one day he’ll learn that injuries happen in this league, you never want to happen to the guy that you’re going against,” Colts center Ryan Kelly told reporters after the game, via the New York Post.

“That’s just horse [expletive].”

After the game, Thibodeaux said he didn’t realize Foles was injured.

“I mean, after a sack you celebrate. I think, when I did realize he was hurt, we started getting up,” Thibodeaux said, via Art Stapleton of USA TODAY. “When you’re doing the celebration, you’re not looking to see who’s doing what. I hope he gets well and I hope he’s all right, obviously.”

Head coach Brian Daboll also told reporters on Monday that Thibodeaux meant no disrespect and didn’t realize Foles was hurt.

But Colts head coach Jeff Saturday didn’t want to hear any of that. He ripped Thibs for being “tasteless” and “trash.” He was also angry that his offensive lineman didn’t go after the rookie.

“Tasteless from the celebration afterwards — just trash. Not a fan of it at all,” Saturday told reporters. “Disappointed from the o-line perspective and for teammates in general. We protect our own. I mean, y’all know me. I’ve been here a long time, so I’m just going to tread lightly. Obviously, I didn’t like it at all and that’s where I’ll leave it.”

It’s very common for rookies to get amped up in big games and lose their heads. The crowd in this game was especially fiery given what was at stake — a trip to the NFC Playoffs.

“The crowd was electric,” Thibodeaux said. “I think that is what we are going to need moving forward. Whatever home games we do get, however, we can travel, fans — y’all need to be there.”

Don’t expect Thibodeaux to slow his roll. He is still operating with a bit of a chip on his shoulder and is gaining confidence and experience with each passing week. He’s destined for great things in this league and must realize that there is an expected level of professionalism, class, and sportsmanship from players in this league that he has yet to learn.

It’s important to note that Thibs has no history of dirty play and the sack itself was a clean, legal hit.

Jeff Saturday: Kayvon Thibodeaux celebration ‘tasteless’ and ‘trash’

Colts interim HC Jeff Saturday called Kayvon Thibodeaux’s snow angel celebration ‘tasteless’ and ‘trash’

Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday took exception to the snow angel celebration New York Giants rookie defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux put on display during the Week 17 game at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

After sacking Colts quarterback Nick Foles at the end of the second quarter, Thibodeaux immediately went into a snow angel celebration directly next to Foles, who was writhing around in pain.

Whether he truly knew Foles was injured can be up for debate. Thibodeaux said following the game he didn’t know Foles was hurt and once he noticed it, he ended the celebration. Though there’s definitely an argument the rookie’s celebration lasted far too long, regardless.

When speaking to the media Monday, Saturday took exception to Thibodeaux’s actions, calling them “tasteless” and “trash.”

“Tasteless from the celebration afterwards – just trash. Not a fan of it at all. Disappointed from the o-line perspective and for teammates in general. We protect our own,” Saturday said. “I mean, y’all know me. I’ve been here a long time, so I’m just going to tread lightly. Obviously, I didn’t like it at all and that’s where I’ll leave it.”

The other issue stemming from the entire situation was the lack of concern or confrontation from the Colts offensive line. The unit simply stood around Foles while watching Thibodeaux go through his celebration.

Saturday expressed extreme disappointment in the unit for their lack of action and told the media it’s something they will address.

“Yeah, we’ll have a discussion about it.”

For those who may have missed it, here’s a clip of the situation:

Colts fans will certainly take exception to Thibodeaux’s celebration, regardless of whether they believe he knew Foles was injured.

But the biggest issue comes from the lack of confrontation from the offensive line. It’s an indictment of how far the Colts have fallen from what was once considered a strong culture in the locker room, especially from the outside looking in.

The Colts have major issues to deal with this offseason as they enter another rebuild, and Sunday’s embarrassing loss, coupled with the team’s lack of fire, was just another showing of how far they continue to fall.

Colts’ Sam Ehlinger to start vs. Texans in finale

Sam Ehlinger will get the start against the Texans in the finale.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger will be the starter in place of the injured Nick Foles (ribs) for the regular-season finale against the Houston Texans.

Foles is recovering from a ribs injury he suffered during the 38-10 loss against the New York Giants on Sunday when he was sacked by rookie Kayvon Thibodeaux in the second quarter.

Foles landed on the ball and was clearly in pain, writhing on the ground. Ehlinger finished the game and will start in Week 18 while Matt Ryan will be active as the backup, according to interim head coach Jeff Saturday.

Saturday also mentioned the celebration by Thibodeaux, which was a major topic of discussion. Thibodeaux’s celebration went on far too long while laying directly next to Foles, who was writhing in pain.

Saturday took issue with the celebration but also with the fact that none of the Colts’ offensive linemen did anything to confront the rookie as it was happening.

Regardless, the Colts will be preparing for the end of a long season that has been a disaster, to say the least.

Ehlinger will get another chance to prove he’s worthy of development down the road while most fans are likely hoping for a loss to secure a top-five pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Kayvon Thibodeaux clears up ‘snow angel’ celebration after injuring Colts’ QB Nick Foles

Kayvon Thibodeaux sacked Nick Foles and celebrated by making a snow angel on the turf. He didn’t realize QB Nick Foles was seriously hurt after the play.

Kayvon Thibodeaux isn’t a stranger to headlines.

That’s one of the main reasons why he was such a perfect fit in New York when drafted by the Giants early in the first found of the 2022 NFL Draft earlier this year. In the Big Apple, with one of the most active media markets in the world surrounding him, Thibodeaux has been in the news a lot over the past few months, mainly due to his outstanding play as a rookie, but not hurt by his boisterous persona and fit-for-television smile.

On Sunday, Thibodeaux got into the headlines for the wrong reasons, though. After sacking Indianapolis Colts’ QB Nick Foles, Thibodeaux laid on the ground and celebrated the play by mimicking the making of a snow angel on the turf. All of that would be just fine if it weren’t for the fact that Foles, who went down hard on the play, was writhing in apparent serious pain next to Thibodeaux.

The optics of it looked pretty bad.

After the game, Thibodeaux cleared up his intentions with the celebrations and wished the best for Foles, who he said he didn’t know had been injured in the play. The whole sequence caused quite a stir on social media, with a lot of people shaming Thibodeaux for celebrating after injuring a player, while others made jokes at the whole situation.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

QB Teddy Bridgewater (MIA) – Finger
QB Nick Foles (IND) – Ribs
RB James Conner (ARI) – Shin
WR Skyy Moore (KC) – Hand
WR Dante Pettis (CHI) – Concussion
WR Robbie Anderson (ARI) – Back
WR Jakobi Meyers (NE) – Shoulder

Chasing Ambulances

QB Teddy Bridgewater – It is believed that he broke a finger in his throwing hand when it hit a helmet. He’ll receive X-rays but it is likely to keep him out for the final regular season game. Tua Tagovailoa remains out with his second concussion of the year and Skylar Thompson is in line to start.

QB Nick Foles – Received a hard hit to the midsection and started convulsing on the field, which was made surreal when the tackler, Kayvon Thibodeaux, lay beside him making invisible snow angels. He walked to the sideline but was then brought by cart to the locker room. Sam Ehlinger replaced him and would finish out the final game against the Texans if needed.

RB James Conner – Left for the fourth quarter with a shin injury and did not return. HC Kliff  Kingsbury has no updates after the game other than saying, “it didn’t seem to be too bad, but we’ll check him out and see how it goes.” Corey Clement replaced him in the loss to the Falcons.

WR Jakobi Meyers – He aggravated his shoulder injury when he caught a touchdown against the Dolphins. He said that he was fine and barring any surprising news this week, he is expected to play against the Bills this week.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Travis Etienne (JAC) – The Jacksonville running back hadn’t scored since Week 9 but produced over 100 total yards for the last two weeks. Versus the Texans, Etienne ran for 108 yards and a score on just nine carries, and caught three passes for 32 yards. It was a 28-point blowout but Etienne got in his fantasy points early and has been a consistent contributor in the fantasy playoffs.

WR Kadarius Toney (KC) – The mid-season acquisition led the Chiefs with four catches for 71 yards in the win over the Broncos. He was only used for one catch in each of the last two games, but came through in Week 17 against one of the better secondaries.

RB Jerick McKinnon (KC) – He caught five passes for 56 yards versus Denver and scored two more touchdowns. That gives him eight touchdowns over the last five games. The 30-year-old running back is playing on a one-year contract and has become the best weapon of the Chiefs for the last month.

QB Carousel – Here’s an interesting tidbit for those who like to stream quarterbacks or wait late to grab one. Of the 32 NFL quarterbacks that started the Week 1 game for their team, only 18 of them are starting in Week 17 for the same team. And that doesn’t count Carson Wentz who just now returned.

RB Raheem Mostert (MIA) – The Miami running back has been good for around 40 yards in most games, and had a freakish 17-136 stat-line against the Bills in Week 15 while Jeff Wilson was out.  Wilson was back and led the backfield with 15 carries for 45 yards in the loss to the Pats, while Mostert ran for 29 yards on nine carries. But – both backs usually catch one or two passes per game. Mostert led the Fins with eight catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. And five of those catches came from Skylar Thompson in the fourth quarter. He’ll likely need to catch more this week with the Jets looking to shut down the wideouts and Thompson potentially starting.

Patriots backfield – Disappointing to fantasy owners to see that Damien  Harris returned from his four-week absence with a hip injury and Rhamondre Stevenson was limited to only eight runs for 42 yards while Harris gained 32 yards on nine carries. And Harris caught three passes to only two for Stevenson.  Granted, Stevenson is questionable to play every week, wink-wink, and ran for 172 yards two weeks ago.

QB Daniel Jones (NYG) –  The Giants’ quarterback started the year with ample rushing stats but scaled that back since midseason. After Week 7, he only scored twice via the run and bounced between 14 and around 40 yards in almost every game. Against the Colts, Jones suddenly ran for as season-high 11 times and gained 91 yards and two touchdowns. He was effective and didn’t let up just because they were crushing the Colts. His two scores came in the third and fourth quarters.

TE Taysom Hill (NO) – Hill has seen an uptick in usage with nine carries for 56 yards and a score in Week 16 at the Browns. On Sunday at the Eagles, Hill had his busiest game of the year with two passes, one catch for nine yards, and a season-high 14 rushes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

QB Jarrett Stidham (LV) – Maybe the 49ers underestimated the Raiders’ new starting quarterback? Everyone I know did, including me. Then again, Stidham’s only playing time was in Week 8 when he threw 13 passes at the Saints. Going against one of the top defenses in the NFL of the 49ers, Stidham passed for 365 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions and sent the game into overtime. He threw the interception which set-up the 49ers eventual winning field goal. But the fair question is if his first ever NFL start results in 365 passing yards, how come Derek Carr hasn’t reached that yardage this year? It cannot be because Stidham had a cakewalk matchup.

RB Kenneth Walker (SEA) – The rookie just ran for 133 yards on 23 carries versus the Jets’ defense. That’s his third 100-yard effort of the season and he already logged nine touchdowns. He’s making a case for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

WR Justin Jefferson (MIN) – He’s still the top fantasy receiver, but an illustration of how things change and evolve came on Sunday. Jefferson recorded nine catches for 184 yards and two scores in Week 1 against the Packers. On Sunday, he was held to one catch for 15 yards on his five targets.

RB Najee Harris (PIT) – After a painfully unproductive first eight games, Harris picked up the pace with five scores and mostly 80+ yard games since midseason. Against the Ravens, he broke the century mark for the first time this season when he ran 22 times for 111 yards and tacked on two catches for 12 yards that included the 10-yard game-winner with 56 seconds left to play.

Huddle player of the week

Mike Evans  –  Talk about trying to make up for lost time. Evans had been only marginally fantasy relevant for the last seven games when he failed to score and averaged under 50 yards per game. Against the Panthers, he rolled up ten catches for 207 yards and three touchdowns. That was the highest-scoring fantasy player of the week, and it doubled his scores which are still down from last year. Last week, he only caught three passes for 29 yard at the Cardinals.

Kayvon Thibodeaux: I didn’t know Nick Foles was hurt during celebration

Kayvon Thibodeaux said he didn’t know Nick Foles was hurt during his snow angels celebration.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Nick Foles exited Sunday’s 38-10 loss just before the end of the first half after suffering a ribs injury that followed a brutal sack from New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.

As Foles was writhing around in pain on the ground, essentially convulsing, Thibodeaux was laying directly next to him, doing snow angels in the turf as a celebration. The celebration went on far too long, up to the point where the Colts training staff began checking on Foles.

It caused a stir on social media, but Thibodeaux said after the game that he didn’t know Foles was hurt while he was celebrating.

“After a sack, you celebrate,” Thibodeaux said via ESPN. “I think when I did realize he was hurt, that’s when we started getting up. When you are doing the celebration, you are not looking to see who is doing what. I hope he gets well, and I hope he is all right.”

It wasn’t a great look for the rookie pass rusher, especially since it was evidently clear Foles was in serious pain.

But an even worse look came from the Colts’ side. Not one player confronted Thibodeaux about his celebration. For a team that prides itself on building a locker room culture in a certain type of way, it was a strong indictment of how badly things are falling apart.

Colts center Ryan Kelly, who was standing next to Foles and Thibodeaux looking down at the scene, had this to say after the game.

“Maybe one day he’ll learn that injuries happen in this league. You never want it to happen to the guy that you’re going against. That’s just horses—,”  Kelly said, according to JJ Stankevitz of the team’s website.

Thibodeaux’s celebration went on for too long, but the biggest indictment comes from the lack of action from anyone on the Colts’ sideline, which shows this locker room may be more broken than we know from the outside.

Colts’ Nick Foles suffers ribs injury vs. Giants

Colts QB Nick Foles won’t return due to a ribs injury he suffered against the Giants.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwdn1cy47y964q player_id=01eqbvhghtkmz2182d image=]

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Nick Foles suffered a ribs injury Sunday against the New York Giants and was ruled out coming out of halftime.

During the second quarter, Foles was sacked by Giants defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and immediately began writhing in pain. He was able to eventually walk off the field under his own power but was carted to the locker room.

Coming out of the first half, Foles was ruled out.

Matt Ryan was a healthy scratch, as expected, so Sam Ehlinger is the only active quarterback on the roster.

Kayvon Thibodeaux did so many snow angels while an injured Nick Foles writhed in pain

Thibodeaux knocked out 10 full seconds of snow angels on a snow-less field, even as trainers checked on an injured Foles.

Kayvon Thibodeaux is having a solid rookie season for the New York Giants. He’s been a key component for one of the NFC’s most surprising playoff contenders. His sack of Nick Foles in the second quarter of Sunday’s showdown forced an Indianapolis Colts punt and marked his third sack in his last five games.

That, however, probably won’t be what we remember him for in Week 17. Instead, it’ll be the 10-plus second celebration that followed. That involved making non-existent snow angels on the bare turf of MetLife Stadium. Next to a clearly injured and writhing in pain Foles, who’d later be carted back to the locker room for further medical evaluation.

It was an interesting look for a player who earned his celebration but failed to read the room. Thibodeaux came off the edge untouched to flatten the Super Bowl 52 MVP:

Needless to say, fans and NFL writers had some feelings about the juxtaposition of ecstacy and agony churning inches away from each other in northern New Jersey.
