It was bound to happen eventually, but the Michigan State athletics program has finally been hit hard with COVID-19. The men’s basketball team already postponed two games, and the women’s team announced the postponement of Monday’s game against Michigan.

Fans will need to wait to watch Suzy Merchant’s squad, which features a supremely talented scorer, Nia Clouden, play one of its biggest rivalry games of the season.

Michigan State Women’s Basketball rises to No. 23 in latest AP Poll

The unbeaten Michigan State Women’s Basketball team finally rising up the AP Poll rankings.

After being stuck at No. 25 for two weeks, the Michigan State Women’s Basketball is finally rising up the AP Poll. The team beat Purdue yesterday 71-64 to earn a rise up the AP Poll to No. 23 overall.

The Spartans, coached by Suzy Merchant and led by scorching hot guard Nia Clouden, are now 8-0 on the season and obviously undefeated in conference play.

They will face their biggest of the season on Thursday when they host No. 12 Maryland.

Michigan State Women’s Basketball inside AP Top 25 at No. 25

Starting the season 6-0, warrants being in the AP Top 25. That is what the Spartans have done as they are No. 25 in the AP Women’s Poll.

Starting the season 6-0 definitely warrants being in the AP Top 25. That is exactly what the Michigan State women’s basketball team has done and comes in at No. 25 in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll.

This is the Spartans best start to a season since the 2012-13 season. This is the first time the Spartans have been in the Top 25 this season. The last time the women’s team was inside the AP Top 25 was December 22, 2019.

The Spartans are coming off of two wins versus MAC opponents Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. Junior Nia Clouden led the way averaging 19.5 PPG, 5 RPG and 6.5 APG over those two wins. The Spartans next test is against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. EST. Oakland is 3-3 on the year so far and is coming off a back-to-back against Wright State in which they split the games. They are led by junior Kahlaijah Dean who is averaging 16.7 PPG, 5 RPG and 2.5 APG.

Michigan State Women’s Basketball releases 2020-21 schedule

The Michigan State Women’s Basketball team has announced their 2020-21 schedule, which begins this Friday.

Suzy Merchant and the Michigan State Women’s Basketball team has really started to build up a competitive program in the Big Ten.

Merchant made a splash on the recruiting trail this summer when 2021 5-star guard Damiya Hagemann committed to the Spartans, and they are also poised to make a strong run in 2020 behind their star junior Nia Clouden. Clouden was recently named to the preseason All-Big Ten team, and deservedly so after leading the team with 14.5 points per game last year.

The team released their 2020-21 schedule on Monday, which you can see below. Their season will open this Friday against St. Francis:

Michigan State Women’s Basketball: Nia Clouden named to preseason All-Big Ten Team

The Spartans junior guard was named to the preseason All-Big Ten Team after making second-team last season.

If you aren’t familiar with the Michigan State Women’s Basketball team yet, you should get familiar. Head coach Suzy Merchant has really built up a great team (with plenty of more top recruits on the way in coming years) in East Lansing, and this year they will be led by junior guard Nia Clouden.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Clouden has been named to the preseason All-Big Ten Women’s Basketball Team.

Clouden started every game last year for the Spartans and led the team with 14.5 points per game while also averaging 4 rebounds per game. She also shot 82.3% from the free-throw line and was named second-team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media.

Clouden is only 167 points away from reaching the 1,000 point mark in her three-year career.

Spartans Taryn McCutcheon, Nia Clouden given All-Big Ten Women’s Basketball honors

The Michigan State Women’s Basketball team has two players given All-Big Ten honors this season.

Over the weekend, Michigan State Women’s Basketball point guard Taryn McCutcheon became the All-Time Assists Leader in program history. It was revealed today that McCutcheon, along with her partner in the backcourt Nia Clouden have been named to the All-Big Ten Women’s Basketball Team.

Fourteen Big Ten coaches voted Clouden and McCutcheon to the Second team while the media voted Clouden to the Second team and McCutcheon received an honorable mention.

This is the sophomore Clouden’s second straight year being given All-Big Ten honors and she was also on the All-Freshman Team last year. She led the Spartans in scoring this season with 14.6 points per game.

This is Taryn McCutcheon’s fourth straight year being named to the team. McCutcheon ended the season averaging 10.8 points per game and 3.6 assists.

Head coach Suzy Merchant has now had 45 players given All-Big Ten honors and MSU has had at least two players named to the team each year since she took over the position.

Michigan State’s Nia Clouden named top-5 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

It was a big week for Nia Clouden and Michigan State Women’s Basketball and she was named a top-5 player in the NCAA for her big week.

Each week during the NCAA Women’s Basketball season, NCAA.com will name a Starting Five that highlights the top-5 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball players of the week. This week, it was Michigan State’s Nia Clouden that topped that list after she led the Spartans to their first win over No. 15 Notre Dame since 2004, scoring 28 points in the big win.

Here is what NCAA.com said about Clouden’s performance this week:

“Michigan State sophomore guard Nia Clouden was instrumental as the Spartans scored the program’s first win over Notre Dame in South Bend since 2004, and the first victory by a Big Ten school over the Fighting Irish since 2009.

Clouden scored a career-high 28 points in the Spartans’ 72-69 win over No. 15 Notre Dame on Nov. 14. She got off to a fast start, making her first four 3-pointers in the first quarter. She closed out the game strong as well, scoring six points in the final 10 minutes. For the game, she was 9-for-21 from the field and 4-for-9 from long range. She also added three steals, three rebounds and her first block of the season.

She currently leads the Spartans in scoring, averaging 19.3 points, scoring in double figures twice this season. She also leads the team in steals, averaging 3.3 per game.

After the win against Notre Dame, the Spartans moved up to No. 15 in the latest Associated Press top-25 poll this week. Michigan State, 3-0, will open a two-game homestand against Oakland on Tuesday, Nov. 19.”
