New York Islanders at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New York Islanders at Toronto Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Islanders (25-11-3) and Toronto Maple Leafs (23-14-5) square off at Scotiabank Arena at 7 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Islanders-Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Islanders at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Semyon Varlamov vs. Michael Hutchinson

Varlamov will be in the crease to face the Maple Leafs, putting his impressive 14-4-3 record, 2.41 goals against average and .921 save percentage on the line. He picked up a win against the Leafs Nov. 13, but he allowed four goals on 27 shots, so it wasn’t a dominating performance.

Hutchinson enters Saturday off of rare back-to-back victories and is now 2-5-1 for the season. He has a .883 SV% and 4.03 GAA, and he gave up four goals on 28 shots in his last start against the New Jersey Devils Dec. 27.

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Islanders 3

Moneyline (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-175) are looking for revenge against the Islanders, and they’re going to get it at home. They have won eight of their last nine games overall, and they’re 5-1 in the past six against Eastern Conference foes. The Islanders (+145) have won just once in the past five trips to Hogtown.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The puck line is tempting for the Leafs (-1.5, +155), but I expect this to be a one-goal game, perhaps decided in overtime or a shootout. However, the Islanders (+1.5, -189) are just too expensive on the other end. That’s too much chalk to eat.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-133) is a strong play, as you can expect some fire-wagon hockey in this one featuring two high-powered offenses. Plus, the Over is 10-2 in the previous 12 meetings in Toronto.

San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s San Jose Sharks at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The San Jose Sharks (17-21-3) and Pittsburgh Penguins (24-11-4) open their 2020 calendar year with a 7 p.m. ET tilt at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. We analyze the Sharks-Penguins odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Sharks at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Aaron Dell vs. Matt Murray

Dell owns a 3.15 goals against average, .900 save percentage through 12 starts and three relief appearances. Like the team in front of him, the fourth-year NHLer has struggled with consistency. Dell is, however, coming off a December that saw improvement in his save percentage (.911 in December vs. .890 prior). He’s been solid over his last three road games, but the most recent of those was Dec. 7.

Murray has logged a 2.96 GAA and .894 SV%. His save mark is 40-plus points lower than that of Penguins backup Tristan Jarry. Murray only appeared in three December games, and he was woeful over that stretch and the few games preceding it. The 25-year-old owns a .853 SV% over his last seven games.

Prediction

Pittsburgh 3, San Jose 2

Moneyline (ML)

This post-holiday JV matchup in goal takes too much of an edge off of what would likely be a play on San Jose (+155) with a big price. As listed, this is a decent Penguins (-189) club which has won seven of its last eight games overall and four in a row on home ice. The Pens do a credible job in creating quality scoring chances, and they don’t rely on power-play opportunities to score (Pittsburgh ranks seventh in goal scoring and merely 14th on the PP). PASS.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Sharks are on their second of a five-game road trip, and they played two nights ago (Dec. 31 — losing, 2-0, to the bottom-feeder Detroit Red Wings). San Jose has lost five in a row on the road. The Sharks rank 26th in scoring and 30th in allowing goals; they are 1-for-their-last-23 on the PP.

There are some analytics (recent Corsi figures, goalie trends, expected goals for and against) that would make the Sharks a play in some situations. But, that card will sit in the back pocket for now.

PASS on San Jose (+1.5, -167).

Over/Under (O/U)

There is a bit of value with some defensive pros for the Sharks and offensive cons for the Penguins. Take the UNDER 6.5 (-149).

St. Louis Blues at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s St. Louis Blues at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The St. Louis Blues (26-9-6) and Colorado Avalanche (23-13-4) do battle at Pepsi Center 9:30 p.m. ET Thursday. We analyze the Rangers-Oilers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Blues at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Jordan Binnington vs. Philipp Grubauer

Binnington has a sparkling 19-6-4 record with a 2.39 goals-against average and .921 save percentage with one shutout this season. He rolls in on a six-start winning streak, including a 5-2 win over the Avalanche in St. Louis back on Dec. 16.

Grubauer has managed a 10-9-3 record with a 2.91 GAA and .911 save percentage, and he enters on a personal 0-4-1 skid. He was on the losing side of that Dec. 16 meeting on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Blues at Avalanche: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 7:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Blues 4, Avalanche 3

Moneyline (ML)

The BLUES (+110) are slight favorites, as they look to bounce back from a road loss in Arizona to close out the 2019 calendar year. They’re 16-5 in their past 21 inside the Central Division, and they hold an eight-point division lead over the second-place Avalanche (-134).

While Colorado is favored, it’s just 2-6 in its past eight home games against St. Louis, and 8-23 in the past 31 meetings overall in this series.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The puck line is risky business in this battle between the top two teams in the Central. While I expect the Blues to come out of it with a win, I’d recommend just taking them straight up rather than grab inside at (+1.5, -239). That’s too much chalk to eat.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-134) has cashed in four of the past five games overall for Colorado, and six of its past eight inside the Central. While Arizona’s failure last time out was the loss for bettors that night, it might be the gain of Over bettors in this one. The Over is 5-0 in the past five for the Blues when scoring two or fewer goals in their previous outing.

Winter Classic: Nashville Predators at Dallas Stars odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Winter Classic between the Nashville Predators at Dallas Stars sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Nashville Predators (18-14-6) and Dallas Stars (22-14-4) drop the puck at the Cotton Bowl in the annual Winter Classic at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday.

It seems weird for hockey, but it is outdoors, so we take a look at the weather forecast. The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies, little chance of precipitation and temperatures in the mid-50’s.

We analyze the Predators-Stars sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Predators at Stars: Projected starting goalies

Pekka Rinne vs. Ben Bishop

Rinne puts his 13-7-3 record on the line, and he has a 3.02 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. He lost his only previous start on home ice against the Stars back on Dec. 14, coughing up four goals on 22 shots.

Bishop has been outstanding with a 2.34 GAA and .926 save percentage. While the results of his hard work don’t exactly show in his win-loss record at 13-9-3, it’s mostly a lack of offensive support which has led to his mediocre ledger. He hasn’t faced the Preds this season, as Anton Khudobin took that start in the second end of a back-to-back Dec. 14.

Predators at Stars: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 8:05 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Stars 3, Predators 2

Moneyline (ML)

The STARS (-143) are a better play because they have the better netminder in the crease. This will be a lower-scoring game, and that’s when Bishop is at his best. Taking Dallas is going a bit against the grain, as the home team is just 3-8 SU in the previous 11 Winter Classic battles.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Don’t even think about the puck line. The Stars (-1.5, +190) are an intriguing play, but six of the 11 previous Winter Classics have resulted in one-goal games.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-134) is the play here. While ice technology has improved amazingly over the past couple of decades, as no one would ever have imagined an outdoor game in Texas … even in Winter. The ice will likely still be sticky, but the fact there is no snowfall or precipitation in the forecast will likely mean the ice is better than we have seen in previous games in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, etc. … Still, with two outstanding netminders, the goals will be at a premium. Eight of the previous 11 Winter Classics have seen a total of 5 or fewer goals.

New York Rangers at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s New York Rangers at Edmonton Oilers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Rangers (19-15-4) and Edmonton Oilers (20-17-4) face-off at Rogers Place at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Rangers-Oilers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Rangers at Oilers: Projected starting goalies

Alexandar Georgiev vs. Mike Smith

Georgiev is tabbed for the start in Edmonton, closing out the decade for the Original Six Blueshirts. He puts his 10-7-1 record, 2.99 goals against average and .915 save percentage with two shutouts on the season. He won in Toronto Saturday, making 44 saves on 48 shots in an overtime victory.

Smith has rolled up a 7-9-2 record with a 3.12 GAA and .893 save percentage with one shutout. He hasn’t won since Nov. 23 in Las Vegas, taking losses in each of his past four starts (0-3-1).

Rangers at Oilers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11:50 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Rangers 5, Oilers 3

Moneyline (ML)

The RANGERS (+125) are slight underdogs on the road against the Oilers (-150), and they’re the better value with the better backstop, as Smith has been too erratic lately.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Rangers (+1.5, -223) are just too expensive on the puck line. A much better value, and an intriguing play, is rolling with the alternative spread, taking the Rangers (-1.5, +310). It’s a risky play, but it’s also nice to triple up to fund your night out while you watch the ball drop.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-154) comes with a pricey juice tag, but it’s worth a look. Smith has been a sieve lately, and even though Georgiev has been sharp in the pipes, the Rangers defense makes their goaltender face a lot of rubber. He is going to give up several goals, even in a win.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (20-13-4) and Buffalo Sabres (17-16-7) battle at KeyBank Center at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Lightning-Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Lightning at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy vs. Linus Ullmark

Vasilevskiy, the defending Vezina Trophy winner, puts his 16-9-2 record, 2.85 goals against average and .908 save percentage on the line against the Sabres. He won his first meeting with Buffalo in Stockholm Nov. 8, stopping 20 of 22 shots in a win. Vasilevskiy also topped the Sabres at home Nov. 25, making 28 saves on 30 shots.

Ullmark is on a personal three-game losing streak which has dropped his season record to 11-10-3. He has a 2.80 GAA and .913 SV%.

Lightning at Sabres: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Lightning 5, Sabres 2

Moneyline (ML)

The LIGHTNING (-176) are heavy favorites to finish the four-game season sweep against the Sabres (+145). This is almost about as sure of a thing as it gets, yet the price isn’t terrible.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

LIGHTNING (-1.5, +155) are a tremendous value, as four of the Sabres’ (+1.5, -189) last five losses were decided by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+125) is a nice value here, and the Lightning have the potential to take care of the Over almost all by themselves.

Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (17-15-7) and Boston Bruins (23-7-9) tangle at TD Garden at 7 p.m. ET Sunday. We analyze the Sabres-Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Sabres at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Linus Ullmark vs. Tuukka Rask

Ullmark is 11-9-3 on the year with a .914 save percentage and 2.79 goals against average.

Jaroslav Halak blanked the Sabres in the front end of the home-and-home, now it’s Rask’s turn to try and get back into the win column. He snapped a personal five-game winless drought last time out, but it is still the only win in six appearances since Dec. 1. The last time he faced the Sabres he allowed just two goals on 38 shots Nov. 21 at TD Garden.

Sabres at Bruins: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Bruins 5, Sabres 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Bruins (-238) are heavy favorites, and they are just too expensive at a risk of more than two times the return. AVOID.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

BRUINS (-1.5, +120) are a much better play on the puck line. Their past two games have not only resulted in a straight-up win but a puck-line cover, too. In fact, that has been the case in each of their past five victories, so if you bet the B’s, you might as well play the puck line, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-121) is worth a small-unit bet. The Bruins offense is more than capable of hitting the number all by themselves.

New York Islanders at Minnesota Wild odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s New York Islanders at Minnesota Wild sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Islanders (23-10-3) visit the Minnesota Wild (19-15-5) for a Sunday tilt at the Xcel Energy Center. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. ET.  We analyze the Islanders-Wild odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Islanders at Wild: Projected starting goalies

Semyon Varlamov vs. Devan Dubnyk

Varlamov owns a 2.47 goals against average and .918 save percentage on the season. He’s registered a fine .934 mark in 5-on-5 hockey, but the 12-year NHL veteran has not been sharp of late. Varlamov owns an .859 SV over his last four appearances.

Dubnyk had a rocky start to his season, posting a mere .867 SV over his first five games. The 13-year NHL veteran has since logged a .912 figure. On the season, Dubnyk owns a 3.24 GAA and .898 SV%. Last season he faced the Isles once, stopping 32-of-34 shots. Dubnyk pitched a 22-save shutout of the Calgary Flames in his last home start (Dec. 23). He has started three of Minnesota’s last four games, and the Wild won all three.

Islanders at Wild: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Minnesota 4, Islanders 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Isles have coughed up a lot of shots recently and, with a 1-4 record over their last five games, aren’t playing their best hockey of late. New York has also been tagged with more penalties over recent games. Puck-possession analytics are more strongly aligned with Minnesota’s .551-point percentage than with New York’s .681 mark.

Minnesota has been terrific at home (10-2-3). The Wild – which play in the tough Central Division – are 5-1 against Eastern Conference teams. MINNESOTA (-120) is a solid play.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Seven of New York’s last eight losses were by two or more goals. Each of Minnesota’s last four wins has been of the same variety.

With recent scores for both teams in mind, there is a lean on MINNESOTA (-1.5 +230). The Wild’s mediocre special teams chip away at the prospect, but the price is fair.

Over/Under (O/U)

An out-of-sorts NYI club slogging through the holiday week – with a scuffling netminder – against a hot-at-home Minnesota bunch that has averaged 3.93 goals per game since Nov. 29 makes for a lean on the OVER 5.5 (+105).

Previewing Saturday’s Arizona Coyotes at Vegas Golden Knights sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Arizona Coyotes (21-14-4) and Vegas Golden Knights (20-15-6) do battle at T-Mobile Arena at 10 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Coyotes-Golden Knights sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Coyotes at Golden Knights: Projected starting goalies

Antti Raanta vs. Marc-Andre Fleury

Raanta puts his 6-6-2 record, 2.70 goals against average and .921 save percentage on the line in Vegas. He is back as a No. 1 backstop with Darcy Kuemper on the shelf due to injury.

Malcolm Subban made the start Friday night, so Flower gets the call in the second end of the back-to-back. Fleury is 14-8-3 with a 2.81 GAA and .910 save percentage with two shutouts so far this season.

Coyotes at Golden Knights: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Coyotes 2, Golden Knights 1

Moneyline (ML)

The COYOTES (+110) are a nice value on the road, where they have actually been way better than in their own home barn. They’re 13-5-3 on the road, whereas the Golden Knights (-133) are just 10-7-3 at home. Take the visitors.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

AVOID. Neither of these teams are going to win in a landslide. It will be a low-scoring defensive slog with plenty of goaltending. Avoid the puck line.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (+100) has connected in eight of the past 11 for Arizona on the road, while going 11-5 in the past 16 against the Pacific Division. VGK has hit the Under in eight of the past 10 at home, and 10-4 in their past 14 as a favorite.

New York Rangers at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New York Rangers at Toronto Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Rangers (18-15-4) and Toronto Maple Leafs (21-14-4) will lock horns at Scotiabank Arena at 7 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Rangers-Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Rangers at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Alexandar Georgiev vs. Frederik Andersen

Georgiev is expected to get the nod after Henrik Lundqvist shut down the Carolina Hurricanes for the third time this season Friday night. With the back-to-back and a heavy workload for the King, Georgiev is expected to play. He is 9-7-1 with a 2.93 goals against average and .915 save percentage with two shutouts. Georgiev is looking to avenge a loss Dec. 20 against the Leafs at Madison Square Garden.

Andersen has posted a 19-8-3 record with a 2.64 goals against average and .916 save percentage, as he has single-handedly kept the Leafs in the mix. If not for his heroics in the crease, who knows where the Blue and White would be.

Rangers at Maple Leafs: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Maple Leafs 6, Rangers 4

Moneyline (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-238) are worth a small-unit play here, as the Rangers (+190) are 10-4 in the past 14 trips to Toronto, but just 2-5 in the previous seven meetings in this series. The Blueshirts are also just 4-10 in the past 14 games when working on no rest while going 1-7 in the past eight vs. Atlantic Division foes.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Maple Leafs (-1.5, +115) have a chance to cover the puck line, and that’s the way to roll if you want to play this game. However, the defensive lapses of the Leafs lately make them risky business. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+125) is the way to go in this one, cashing in nine of the past 11 meetings at Scotiabank Arena. The Over is also 6-0-1 in New York’s past seven overall, and 4-1 in Toronto’s past five overall.
