Rams Week 14 injury report: Gerald Everett (knee) still sidelined

Gerald Everett may or may not be able to play on Sunday night.

The Los Angeles Rams are gearing up for a huge matchup with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14 and they enter this one in better shape than their NFC West rivals. They released their first injury report of the week and only three players were listed with ailments.

Andrew Whitworth got the day off and Gerald Everett was the only other non-participant as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Rob Havenstein was limited with a knee injury, while Darious Williams (ankle) returned in a limited capacity.

Everett is the biggest question mark, especially after the Rams promoted TE Kendall Blanton from the practice squad.

“Obviously, Gerald has been out – he may or may not be able to play this week,” McVay said. “Then, also, Kendall has done a great job. I think he’s earned the right to be able to move up to the active roster and what he’s demonstrated week-in and week-out, I think he’s earned that.”

The Seahawks, on the other hand, had nine players listed on their injury report. The most notable are Jadeveon Clowney, Ziggy Ansah and Mike Iupati, who were all limited, as well as Duane Brown, Luke Willson and Mychal Kendricks, who missed practice.

WATCH: Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa weighing options

After a season-ending hip injury, Tua Tagovailoa isn’t sure what he’ll do next.

In an interview with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit on Tuesday, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said he’s “not too sure” about what’s next for his football career.

The junior, whose season ended with a hip dislocation against Mississippi State on Nov. 16, shared that he is thinking from a financial perspective, not an emotional one when weighing whether he should declare for the NFL draft or return to Alabama for his senior season.

“You think of risk-reward on coming back, you think of risk-reward on leaving,” Tagovailoa told Herbstreit. “Now is not the time to be making emotional decisions. Now, you have to change into thinking as a businessman. You have to make business decisions.”

Tagovailoa entered the 2019 season as a lock for the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, but injuries to his ankle and hip have dropped his stock.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 20.

WATCH: Eli Manning likely to start Sunday vs. Eagles

The Giants are likely to start Eli Manning against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s time for Eli Manning to shake off that rust.

New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Wednesday that starting quarterback Daniel Jones did not participate in Wednesday’s practice and is wearing a protective walking boot as he recovers from a “moderate” right ankle sprain suffered Sunday against the Packers.

Shurmur told reporters that the injury is not as severe as what Saquon Barkley dealt with earlier in the season, sidelining the running back for three games, but Jones’ recovery is expected to take weeks, not days.

That means we can expect to see Eli Manning back in the saddle on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. The veteran quarterback hasn’t seen a snap since his Week 2 loss to the Bills.

Steelers vs Cardinals Wednesday practice report

Several Steelers missed practice on Wednesday.

It was time to get to work on Wednesday for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team practiced in preparation for their showdown with week with the 3-7-1 Arizona Cardinals. And it seems the Steelers could once again be shorthanded on offense.

Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster did not practice again on Wednesday as he continues to deal with a knee injury. The rumor mill on social media is even saying Smith-Schuster is still several weeks away. Smith-Schuster did do some straight line running today but nothing beyond that.

Running back James Conner did practice on a limited basis on Wednesday. But realistically, no one should expect Conner to play this week. With games against the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens left on the schedule, it would be better to hold Conner out and be sure he’s healthy for bigger games left on the schedule and potentially the playoffs.

Steelers C Maurkice Pounce on his scrum with Myles Garrett: ‘The fight was worth it’

Maurkice Pouncey went to war for his quarterback and he’d do it again.

On Wednesday, Pittsburgh Steelers center re-joined his teammates for the first time since he was suspended for two games for his part in the fight between the Steelers and Cleveland Browns back in Week 11. But when Pouncey spoke to the media on Wednesday, he made it very clear he had no regrets for defending his quarterback.

“The NFL had to make a statement, and rightfully so,” Pouncey said. “At the end of the day, the fight didn’t look good, but the fight was worth it.”

Pouncey went after Browns defensive end Myles Garrett after Garrett his Steelers QB Mason Rudolph over the head with his own helmet. Pouncey took Garrett to the ground and for his actions got himself a three-game suspension later reduced to two.

But for Pouncey, what’s done is done and he seemed to be fine with how it all worked out.

“No regrets,” Pouncey said. “I’ve moved on now, man. Everyone had to pay their fines. Everyone had to do their due diligence. The money was worth it, trust me.”

For his part, Garrett got an indefinite suspension to extend no less than the remainder of this season including the playoffs.

Raiders-Titans Wednesday injury report: Trent Brown suffers pectoral injury

Raiders-Titans Wednesday injury report: Trent Brown suffers pectoral injury

We are headed into the final quarter of the season. By this point, most players are dealing with something.

For Trent Brown, it’s been one thing after another. He was dealing with a knee just last week that caused him to miss practice. It was an ankle injury before that. This week it’s a pectoral muscle injury, so that’s worth keeping an eye on. It’s worth noting that despite these nagging injuries, he’s missed just one start this season.

The Raiders and Titans’ workhorse backs are also banged up. Josh Jacobs has been fighting through a shoulder injury for some time now and apparently Titans back Derrick Henry is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Those injuries had the two backs listed as non-participants in practice Wednesday. The Raiders’ practice was a walk-thru at an off-site location so Jacobs’ absence is an estimation. Either way, he has been dealing with this injury for some time, so there’s no reason to think it would keep him out this week. As for Henry, his practice status will be one to watch on Thursday.

Other Raiders not practicing include WR Hunter Renfrow (rib), and LB Kyle Wilber (ankle).

Other Titans not practicing include LB Daren Bates (shoulder), WR Adam Humphries (ankle), CB Adoree Jackson (foot), and CB LeShaun Sims (ankle).

Raiders have three new practice squad players

Raiders have three new practice squad players

Jon Gruden has been saying he’s going to shake things up to try and add a spark to the Raiders after their two big losses the past two weeks. Apparently, that goes for the practice squad as well.

The team had three new faces on the scout team today. First up, they had tight end Eric Saubert signed away by the Bears. They replaced him with third-year tight end Cole Wick.

They also added rookie CB Jordan Brown and brought back WR De’Mornay Pierson-El who had spent part of the offseason with the team.

Brown was a 7th round pick by the Bengals. He played on Gruden’s North squad in the Senior Bowl.

In corresponding moves, they released linebacker Quentin Poling and offensive lineman Kyle Kalis from the practice squad.

At this point in the season teams are jockeying to add players they would like to re-sign to reserve/future contracts come January.

Raiders targeting Week 16 for WR Hunter Renfrow return from rib injury

Raiders targeting Week 16 for WR Hunter Renfrow return from rib injury

The timetable for Hunter Renfrow’s return from his rib injury is becoming more clear. Two weeks ago when he broke his rib, it was unclear if he might need to be placed on injured reserve. He did not, which would suggest the team expected him to be back on the field this season.

As of last week, Gruden would only say he would not play in Kansas City but that he was week-to-week after that. This week Gruden is pushing his return a couple more weeks at least.

“We’re very hopeful that he could return, maybe for the last game or two,” Gruden said of Renfrow. “We’re going to keep him where he is on the active roster. We’re going to try to do without him for another game or two and hopefully get him back maybe for the Chargers game. That’s our wish list, hope list right now for Hunter. We miss him.”

The Raiders face the Chargers in LA week 16. It’s possible that Renfrow’s return could also be dependent upon the Raiders playoff hopes. If they are still in it, Renfrow could help. If not, it seems less likely they would try and rush him back. For now, they will remain optimistic they could have him for a possible playoff run.

Sean McVay on Todd Gurley’s increased role: ‘Me not being an idiot’

Todd Gurley has gotten more touches recently, and Sean McVay had a funny reason for it.

To begin the 2019 season, Todd Gurley went eight straight games with fewer than 20 touches. In two of the last three weeks, he’s gotten at least 20 touches – the lone exception being the Rams’ 45-6 blowout loss to Baltimore.

The Rams have won both games in which Gurley has gotten at least 20 touches, as his involvement has provided a spark in recent weeks.

So, what’s the reason for his increased role? Sean McVay explained it in very simple terms on Wednesday.

“Me not being an idiot,” he said. “I think he’s felt good and really he’s done a nice job with that. You look at the Chicago game and just going from there, you don’t want to make some of the same mistakes that you ended up making earlier on in the season and I think he’s done a nice job handling a bigger workload. But then you also have confidence in those other guys if they need to give him a spell.”

There were a lot of unhappy fans after the Rams’ Week 10 loss to the Steelers, and not just because Los Angeles didn’t win. It stemmed from Gurley not getting a single touch in the fourth quarter and being replaced by Malcolm Brown on the first two drives of that quarter.

McVay recognized that was a mistake and didn’t want to do anything like that again.

“I think there’s some instances where you look back and it’s always hindsight in terms of what can you do. I think the Steelers game stands out in terms of where we were running the football well and didn’t really give him a chance to get back going based on how that thing played out,” he said. “So you always try to learn from your previous experiences.

“I think we’ve been able to, in the games that he’s gotten more touches, be efficient when we’ve been able to give him the ball. That’s a reflection of him, but also the guys blocking.”

Gurley’s numbers are unimpressive this season, especially for the league’s second-highest paid running back. He has just 642 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 4.2 yards per carry compared to 4.9 in 2018.

Some of that is attributed to his reduced role, but he hasn’t been nearly as explosive or involved in the passing game. That’s changed a bit in recent weeks, but it remains to be seen if the Rams will continue with that approach.
