Career Stats

Strengths

To paraphrase Lightning McQueen, Henry Ruggs III is speed.

There may be no player in the 2020 draft class as fast as Ruggs, who ran an absurd 4.25 40-yard dash at his junior Pro Day in March. He accelerates off the ball with impressive quickness, he has insane acceleration out of his breaks and has the deep speed to outrun practically every defender in the nation on a vertical route.

The wide out is a genuine threat to beat John Ross’ 4.22 time at the Combine. His athleticism translates well after the catch, as he has good lateral quickness and the ability to make defenders miss in the open field. With a 17.6 career yards-per-reception average and 24 touchdowns in three seasons as of this writing, he is a proven deep threat with big-play potential.

Ruggs is far from just a speed receiver, though. He has shown flashes of nuance in his route tree through sinking his hips into his cuts and showing off body control when flipping his hips or making tough adjustments to the ball. He has natural ball skills and can track down balls at a high level. Ruggs is also a tough runner after the catch, showing off impressive contact balance and determination for a receiver with his frame.

Weaknesses

Though he’ll beat defenders with speed, don’t expect Ruggs to physically overwhelm anybody at the next level.

Listed at 190 pounds, Ruggs has a pretty skinny frame and doesn’t possess top-end length. He has yet to prove that he can separate from press-man coverage very well, and he is far from the most physical receiver in jump-ball situations. He could benefit from bulking up a bit and working on his hand techniques to sharpen up his releases. Though he has shown some potential in stemming his routes, he could stand to be a bit more consistent in that regard, as well.

Ruggs’ lack of top-end production isn’t a major concern, considering he’s had to fight for touches with teammates Jerry Jeudy, Devonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and Calvin Ridley at wide receiver. Still, Ruggs never topped 1,000 yards in a single season and has never finished higher than third on his team in receiving yards. There could be a tiny bit of concern attached to selecting him as a No. 1 target in the pros.

Bottom Line

Speed kills in today’s NFL, and Ruggs has that in spades.

The dynamic playmaker is an athletic mismatch for just about any cornerback, and he has shown he has more tools in his skill set than the average speedy receiver. Even in a stacked receiver class like this one, Ruggs belongs firmly in first-round conversation.

Projection: Top 20

Oregon State WR Isaiah Hodgins declares for 2020 NFL draft

Oregon State wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins is leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL draft

Oregon State wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins has declared for the 2020 NFL draft.

The wideout announced his decision through TwitterĀ on Tuesday.

Hodgins had a breakout season in 2019. He finished the year with 86 catches, 1,171 yards and an impressive 13 touchdowns for theĀ  in 2019. He first broke out onto the national radar last season when he caught 59 passes for 876 yards and five touchdowns. Simply put, Hodgins has gotten better with each passing year. His performance saw him named to the 2019 Biletnikoff Award watch list and to the 2019 preseason All-Pac-12 second team.

ā€œBeing a man of faith, this decision has taken a lot of prayer and trust in God,ā€ Hodgins said in his statement. ā€œI have fallen in love with Oregon State these past three years, and I will always cherish the relationships I have created here.ā€

His decision comes as no surprise, as Hodgins put up some eye popping numbers this season. Hodgins is one of the most impressive physical specimens in a class loaded with talent at the position. His 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame and impressive athleticism has piqued the interest of draft analysts and NFL teams alike. His play strength, speed and vision as a ball carrier after the catch project him as a dangerous threat at the next level.

Hodgins is a big receiver that understands how to use his length to his advantage. His continued improvement, physical tools and upside will likely make for an interesting conversation around league circles come April.

Steelers injury report: WR JuJu Smith-Schuster misses Wednesday practice

Three players were out and two limited for Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers began their week of practice preparing for the Arizona Cardinals. They released their first injury report and three players sit out.

Only one was because of an injury, but it is an important player because it was receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Did not practice

  • LB Mark Barron (day off)
  • TE Vance McDonald (day off)
  • WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee)

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday he was not sure if Smith-Schuster would be able to play and made it seem unlikely he would practice Wednesday. He did not. However, he no longer has a concussion listed. It is just the knee.

Two players were limited.

Limited

  • RB James Conner (shoulder)
  • WR Diontae Johnson (illness)

Conner has missed two games. Getting limited work is good news for the Steelers. Johnson hopefully will be well soon.

  • The Saints are coming off a 26-18 road win over the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving. The 49ers took their second loss of the season on the road, losing 20-17 at the Baltimore Ravens.
  • This is the first meeting between the two teams since Kyle Shanahan was hired as 49ers head coach to begin the 2017 season.
  • The 49ers have had three different leading rushers and four different leading receivers this season. The Saints have had two different rushing leaders and three receiving leaders.
  • The 49ers are 4-19 when allowing 250 or more passing yards in a game since the start of 2016. Saints QBĀ Drew BreesĀ is averaging 255.8 passing yards per game this year. The Niners are allowing a league-low 134.3 yards per game through the air.
  • The Saints are tied for second in the league with a turnover differential of plus-11. The Niners are eighth at plus-6.

49ers at Saints: Key injuries

Prediction

49ers 23, Saints 18

Moneyline (?)

TheĀ 49ers (+120)Ā have the defense to slow Brees and RBĀ Alvin Kamara. They’re in a tight battle with the Seattle Seahawks for the NFC West title, while the Saints have cruised all season atop the NFC South.

The Niners have more offensive weapons as head coaches Shanahan and Sean Payton meet in a play-calling battle.

Against the Spread (?)

TheĀ NINERS (+2.5, -106)Ā are also a good play on the spread where they’ll need to stay within two points in a loss or win outright. The Saints are 8-4 against the spread overall while the 49ers are 7-4-1, but San Francisco covers by an average of 10.1 points per game with New Orleans covering by an average of just 0.7 PPG.

Over/Under (?)

Take theĀ UNDER 44.5 (-106) as the Niners try to slow this one down. Both teams play more than a point below the projected point totals on average with the Saints 6-6 against the Over/Under and the 49ers 5-7. Games at the Superdome have gone 3-3 against the O/U.

Cardinals injury report: G J.R. Sweezy sits out practice with illness

The Cardinals are still quite healthy as they prepare for the Steelers.

The Arizona Cardinals began their week of practice on Wednesday to prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They released their first injury report of the week and they are pretty healthy overall. Four players sat out Wednesday’s practice but only two were because of injuries. One player was limited.

Did not practice

  • DL Jonathan Bullard (hamstring)
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald (day off)
  • DL Corey Peters (day off)
  • G J.R. Sweezy (illness)

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury already has said that Bullard will miss multiple weeks with the hamstring injury. Sweezy apparently is sick and probably will be able to play unless the illness lingers all week.

Fitzgerald and Peters usually get days off.

Limited

  • S Jalen Thompson (concussion)

Thompson being limited is good. It means he has progressed through the protocol. If he is symptom-free after practicing, he should be a full participant by the end of the week.

Rookie offensive lineman Lamont Gaillard was also listed on the report as a full participant with a thumb injury.

TheĀ Atlanta FalconsĀ (3-9) host the Carolina PanthersĀ (5-7) Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in a rematch of the Week 11 meeting which the Falcons won 29-3 as visitors. The Week 14 tilt kicks off at 1 p.m. ET. We analyze the Panthers-Falcons odds and sports betting lines, while providing NFL betting tips and picks for this matchup.

Panthers at Falcons: Week 14 preview, betting trends and notes

Get some action on the games by betting at BetMGM. New customer offer: RISK-FREE First Bet (up to $500!) paid in free bets.

  • The Falcons took a 26-18 loss at home against the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving.
  • The Panthers have lost four in a row, with only one of those games played within eight points. They fired head coach Ron Rivera earlier this week and replaced him with Perry Fewell.
  • The Falcons are 1-19 when scoring fewer than 22 points since the start of the 2016 season. They’re averaging 21.7 points per game this year while the Panthers give up 26.7 PPG.
  • Atlanta allows a league-high 408.5 yards from scrimmage per game when at home.
  • The Panthers are 14-0 when not committing any turnovers since the start of 2016. They have a minus-2 turnover differential this year (22 giveaways) while the Falcons are minus-11 (21 giveaways).

Panthers at Falcons: Key injuries

Panthers TEĀ Greg OlsenĀ (concussion) remains in the concussion protocol.

Falcons WRs Julio JonesĀ (shoulder) andĀ Calvin RidleyĀ (toe) were limited in practice Wednesday. TEĀ Austin HooperĀ (knee) was also limited.

Panthers at Falcons: Odds, betting lines and prediction

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 7:50 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Falcons 30, Panthers 23

Moneyline (?)

TheĀ FALCONS (-162) are the play at home after their Week 11 domination of the Panthers and QBĀ Kyle Allen. Jones should return after sitting out Thanksgiving and the return of Hooper would be an added boost.

The Falcons have won four straight and seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Falcons to win outright returns a profit of $6.17.

Against the Spread (?)

After winning by 26 in the season’s first meeting, theĀ FALCONSĀ are laying a conservativeĀ -2.5Ā points withĀ -129 odds. Each of their last seven head-to-head victories was decided by more than a field goal.

Atlanta is 4-8 against the spread while Carolina is 6-6, but the Falcons fall an average of just 2.4 points shy of the cover. The Panthers fall an average of 3.3 points short.

Over/Under (?)

Take theĀ OVER 48.5 (+105). The Panthers are 8-4 against the projections and top the number by an average of 4.4 PPG. The Falcons are 4-8 and fall 1.3 points shy of the line on average, but the probable returns of Jones and Hooper will propel this over the number.

Rams Week 14 injury report: Gerald Everett (knee) still sidelined

Gerald Everett may or may not be able to play on Sunday night.

The Los Angeles Rams are gearing up for a huge matchup with the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14 and they enter this one in better shape than their NFC West rivals. They released their first injury report of the week and only three players were listed with ailments.

Andrew Whitworth got the day off and Gerald Everett was the only other non-participant as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Rob Havenstein was limited with a knee injury, while Darious Williams (ankle) returned in a limited capacity.

Everett is the biggest question mark, especially after the Rams promoted TE Kendall Blanton from the practice squad.

ā€œObviously, Gerald has been out ā€“ he may or may not be able to play this week,” McVay said. “Then, also, Kendall has done a great job. I think heā€™s earned the right to be able to move up to the active roster and what heā€™s demonstrated week-in and week-out, I think heā€™s earned that.ā€

The Seahawks, on the other hand, had nine players listed on their injury report. The most notable are Jadeveon Clowney, Ziggy Ansah and Mike Iupati, who were all limited, as well as Duane Brown, Luke Willson and Mychal Kendricks, who missed practice.

WATCH: Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa weighing options

After a season-ending hip injury, Tua Tagovailoa isn’t sure what he’ll do next.

In an interview with ESPNā€™s Kirk Herbstreit on Tuesday, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said heā€™s ā€œnot too sureā€ about whatā€™s next for his football career.

The junior, whose season ended with a hip dislocation against Mississippi State on Nov. 16, shared that he is thinking from a financial perspective, not an emotional one when weighing whether he should declare for the NFL draft or return to Alabama for his senior season.

“You think of risk-reward on coming back, you think of risk-reward on leaving,” Tagovailoa told Herbstreit. “Now is not the time to be making emotional decisions. Now, you have to change into thinking as a businessman. You have to make business decisions.”

Tagovailoa entered the 2019 season as a lock for the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, but injuries to his ankle and hip have dropped his stock.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 20.
