Report: Saints have ‘little glimmer of hope’ Michael Thomas can play vs. Raiders

The New Orleans Saints have some optimism that superstar WR Michael Thomas can play through an ankle injury against the Las Vegas Raiders.

[jwplayer ytYBtAt4-ThvAeFxT]

Don’t count him out just yet: while New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas isn’t expected to suit up for Week 2’s road game with the Las Vegas Raiders while recovering from a high-ankle sprain, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Thomas was encouraged by how his body responded to light work after Wednesday’s practice session.

Now, that’s hardly the same thing as reporting that Thomas will be cleared to play. He was listed as a non-participant in Thursday’s practice on the Saints injury report, and high-ankle sprains typically sideline players for six to eight weeks; it’s the sort of injury that is only healed by time and rest. And even if Thomas can play through the pain, it will still take time for his ankle to recover to full functionality.

The importance Thomas has to the team almost goes without saying, but let’s run through it again: he’s the best player on the squad, having caught 149 receptions for 1,725 yards (leading the NFL in each category) last season and helped keep the offense on schedule when Drew Brees was taken out of six games with a thumb injury. Missing him puts lesser players into more prominent roles, and forces Saints coach Sean Payton to reconfigure big chunks of his playbook.

And for his part, Payton refused to say one way or the other whether Thomas will play. When asked if Thomas would be ruled out, Payton declined to speak on injury situations for any players.

So we’ll believe that Thomas is going into the game when we see it. Because the Saints are playing on Monday night this week, their daily injury reports will be delayed, and we won’t learn if he’s ruled out until Saturday. It could end up coming down to the inactives list release an hour or so before kickoff. So maybe cross your fingers for good luck, but don’t hold your breath while waiting to see him return to action.

Texans OLB Whitney Mercilus says it is critical to play assignment football versus Ravens

Houston Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus says it is critical for the defense to play assignment football against the Baltimore Ravens.

Houston Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus knows the defense has a hefty challenge on their hands when they face the Baltimore Ravens at 3:25 p.m. at NRG Stadium.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson is as much of a threat through the air as he is on the ground. The Texans got the business end of the Ravens’ offense in Week 11 last year as Baltimore thumped Houston 41-7 with Jackson gaining 70 yards on the ground while through four touchdowns through the air.

“You’ve just got to be very disciplined as far as playing those zone reads and trusting your guys as well, too,” Mercilus said. “There’s a big trust factor that has to happen on defense. The chemistry and then also just being in great position, pinning the near hip, getting into great tackling position on Lamar and those other guys.”

Jackson was more of a pocket passer last week as he stayed in the pocket 2.6 seconds on average, tied for the second-longest time to throw in Week 1. The former 2018 first-round pick carved up the Cleveland Browns going 20-of-25 for 275 yards and three touchdowns, leading Baltimore to a 38-6 win and a 1-0 start.

If Jackson is able to get the ball out early in the game, Mercilus believes the pass rush still has to be patient.

“The thing is you’ve just got to keep on trying and keep going until that opportunity presents itself. Like last week, [outside linebacker] Jacob (Martin) got there early. The ball is getting out much more quickly than we anticipated and what not. It’s just a combination between rushing coverage and all being on the same page. DB’s do a great job so guys up front can get there.”

The Browns were able to get to Jackson for two sacks last week. If the Texans can sprinkle their harassment of Jackson throughout the game, it should keep the contest competitive and give Houston’s offense a chance to dictate the pace of the game.

Texans vs. Ravens Thursday injury report: ILB Peter Kalambayi limited

Houston Texans inside linebacker Peter Kalambayi was added to the Thursday injury report with a hamstring issue.

Houston Texans inside linebacker Peter Kalambayi was added to Thursday’s injury report with a hamstring issue.

The former 2018 sixth-round pick was not on the injury report Wednesday, but was added on Thursday, and was subsequently limited in practice.

There were no other changes to the injury report. Defensive end J.J. Watt was still limited with a hip issue. Still in their usual spots were receiver Brandin Cooks (quad), right tackle Tytus Howard (ankle), and running back Duke Johnson (ankle).

Fullback Cullen Gillaspia (hamstring) and outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard (ankle) were full participants in practice for the second straight day.

Bengals vs. Browns: Week 2 preview, fantasy outlook, betting guide

The Week 2 Thursday night game gives us the first Battle of Ohio and a matchup of two 0-1 teams. Cincinnati will be traveling up to Cleveland after losing to the Los Angeles Chargers, 16-13, due to a heartbreaking missed field goal.

The Browns looked much worse than expected as the Baltimore Ravens beat the breaks off of them to a tune of 38-6. It is a new, short week. Here’s what we can expect to see.

When the Browns have the ball:

We are all aware of how awkward the Browns offense looked last week, but that was against arguably the best team in the NFL. The Bengals are much worse and it is very clear that the pieces Cleveland does have are perfect for Kevin Stefanski’s offensive style. The dynamic duo of Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb played fairly well last week and honestly, they should have gotten more touches. It should be fair to expect the Browns run game to be the main focus this week as the Cincinnati defensive line is banged up on the interior and it is a short week.

[lawrence-related id=52398]

The Cincinnati defense looked better than expected last week with Sam Hubbard having a good day off the edge, Germaine Pratt being productive at linebacker and the new-look defensive backfield coming together. Even so, the strength of this Cincinnati defense is the interior of the defensive line and that will take a hit this week.

The Bengals spent a ton of cash to lure free-agent defensive tackle, D.J. Reader and although he is slated to start this week, we saw him carted off the field in the third quarter of last week’s game. Their other interior star, Geno Atkins, is listed as officially out. The man behind Atkins, Mike Daniels is also out with injury.

With those two studs out, the other interior starter is a big drop off in Christian Covington. Sam Hubbard and Carlos Dunlap are still great options off the edge, but what was once viewed as this team’s strength is now a potential major weakness. The injuries to the Cincinnati defensive line align perfectly to the Browns’ strengths with their strong line and explosive running back tandem.

When the Bengals have the ball:

New rookie quarterback, Joe Burrow had an okay showing last weekend in orchestrating enough drives to keep his team in the game, but he also looked like a rookie quarterback. He also made decisions that remind you that he went from one of the most talented college football teams of all-time to one of the worst NFL teams (see awkward shovel pass). Burrow is going to be good, but to expect him to raise his level of play in just four days is insane, especially considering the heartbreaking fashion in which they lost.

We know how talented the Bengals receivers are, but Cleveland fans know the real danger is a talented tight end. C.J. Uzomah doesn’t strike fear into my heart the way Mark Andrews did. A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd and John Ross all provide something unique to make this a solid group, but I expect the Browns pass rush to be furious this week. That will help the defensive backs out in a big way.

Myles Garrett was one of the most noticeable disappointments from Week 1, but he will be going from facing Orlando Brown at tackle to Bobby Hart; this should make for a Defensive Player of the Week performance. Jonah Williams was impressive at left tackle for the Bengals last week, but I expect Olivier Vernon to be lined up across from him.

NFL Week 2: Browns key matchups and paths to victory over the Bengals

The real offensive threat for Cincinnati is their run game with Joe Mixon and even Giovani Bernard. Mixon did not have the best Week 1, but all Browns fans should recognize how good he can be with no offensive line let alone the new and improved 2020 version. It is fair to expect Mixon to be the focal point on a short week to keep things simple on the young quarterback in his first prime-time away game and again it can’t be stated enough: on a short week.

Fantasy Outlook:

Who are the best available fantasy option based on DraftKings prices:

QB: Joe Burrow, Cincinnati- $5,900: The rookie quarterback only managed 17 fantasy points last week, but it is not unreasonable to expect a 25 point Thursday nigh performance. Burrow is going to struggle, but what makes him the more valuable fantasy option is the damage he can do with his legs as evidenced by his 45 rushing yards and one touchdown showing last week. The Browns are going to be coming hard at the youngster and this should cause him to exit the pocket even more frequently and the Browns should beat the breaks off this team resulting in possible garbage points for Burrow.

RB: Nick Chubb, Cleveland- $6,200: I am going back to the well on Chubb even after his five-point fantasy performance last week. As we discussed above and in The Browns Wire Podcast, the Browns fell behind fast and early and this took Chubb out of the game script. That should not happen this week as Chubb should be the entire game script as Cleveland should be in a position to control the game and clock. Chubb can hit that 25 point threshold against the Bengals.

WR: A.J. Green, Cincinnati- $6,100: Just like what we discussed with Burrow, Green has potential due to the potential garbage time touches and he could score 20 points based on that. The other thing to look out for is if Green faces Terrance Mitchell rather than Denzel Ward. The less-talented Mitchell could result in an uptick in targets for Green.

TE: Austin Hooper, Cleveland- $4,800: David Njoku led all Cleveland tight ends in targets last week, but with him on IR and hopefully a game-plan more focused on the high priced free agent’s usage, we can expect a 15 point performance for Hooper. It is of importance to note that Cincinnati starting safety, Shawn Williams is ruled out again and Hunter Henry was able to record five receptions for 73 yards last week against the Bengals with Williams being out.

Defense: Cleveland- $2,800: The Browns got destroyed last week and the defense scored zero points, but they did manage to get two sacks and a turnover. It is a fair expectation to expect both of those numbers to double and the Cleveland defense possibly hitting that 10-point mark against a rookie quarterback on a short week.

Odds Preview & Predictions: Bengals +6 Browns, Total-43

My favorite bet of the week is the Browns laying the points against a rookie quarterback on again to reiterate a short week. Joe Burrow got his first taste of NFL action last week and did not play great. Now he has four days to shake off a pretty upsetting last-second loss and play on primetime in an away game.

The Browns got destroyed last week, there is no denying it. But the defense wasn’t as pathetic as everyone thinks considering the Ravens are possibly the best offense in the NFL. Myles Garrett had a rough outing against a possible Pro Bowler and gets to rebound against a fringe starter in Bobby Hart. On the offensive side, we discussed the Browns abandoning the run game, but that shouldn’t happen this week as Nick Chubb should exploit that injured Cincinnati defensive line.

As far as the total goes, I am strongly considering the under here as the weather reports predict wind that could surpass 10 miles per hour. I expect the Browns to roll the Bengals and be in a position to maintain time of possession.

Predictions: Cleveland -6 & Under 43

Fantasy football gamble of the week

The Bucs-Panthers matchup offers a great opportunity to take a chance on a former fantasy standout.

Every week, at least one player becomes my fascination of whether he’s worthy of a fantasy football start or bench The decision can be a mental wrestling match, but for the purpose of brevity, only one player can be chosen as the fantasy football gamble of the week.

The best fantasy football gamble for Week 1

So far, my prediction record in this new weekly feature: one catch, 12 yards, one torn ACL. Eyeball emoji. Cringe emoji. Shrug emoji.

Not quite the way I wanted to get this started, but that’s why it is called a gamble and not a lock. We gotta take some risks now and again, right? Brush it off, keep moving …

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Leonard Fournette vs. Carolina Panthers

This week’s inclusion brings us the former Jacksonville Jaguars star back who produced a whole five yards on five carries in his Bucs debut. Ronald Jones had 12 more attempts than Fournette and 20 total utilizations to Fournette’s six. It takes time to work these things out.

In the second game as a Buccaneer, Fournette’s workload should increase. While it won’t jump to the 20-utilization level of Jones, it’s going to be into double-digits and will result in a double figures for fantasy purposes. The Week 2 opponent, Carolina, has been impressively terrible vs. the position since the beginning of 2019, and it carried into Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Josh Jacobs scored thrice, and the Panthers still look lost, even under new tutelage.

[lawrence-related id=63121]

To kick off the 2020 season, Carolina permitted a score every 9.67 Raiders attempts, and the position chipped in 206 yards of total offense. The 2019 Panthers gave up 27 rushing touchdowns, or one every 14 attempts. The next closest team allowed 18 on 308 totes, or every 17.1 carries. It gets worse … Carolina surrendered three more scores to running backs in the passing game, and after Fournette’s 76-catch campaign in last season, he’s deserving of some attention in this area of the game.

Given the Week 1 struggles of Tom Brady and the star-studded passing game in Tampa, expect more balance to help keep the defense off-guard. Brady thrived in play-action passing situations, and if the coaching staff truly values his input, rest easy knowing we’ll see more running action to create defensive confusion.

The Buccaneers didn’t sign Fournette to keep him on the sidelines or give him only six chances a game. And he should have a better grasp of the system with another week under his belt. That means an expanded playbook worth of knowledge and opportunities.

This matchup is far better than last week’s in every way imaginable, and the Bucs should roll. Let’s say the game flows in a different direction and the pass-happy side of Bruce Arians shows up. A significant lead on the board for Tampa would result in extra late-game work for Fournette, so there’s a win-win component at play.

My projection: 9 carries, 42 yards, 1 TD, 2 catches, 21 yards (14.3 PPR points)
