Texans not affected by cold weather, focused on big game with Titans

The Houston Texans aren’t focused on the cold weather; their sights are clearly on the Tennessee Titans and the big Week 16 matchup.

Football weather is finally here, and the Houston Texans players are very aware of it as the Texans prepare to take on the Tennessee Titans in Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Game time temperature will be in the low 20s, a considerable rise from the 10 degrees it was projected to be at kickoff.

The Texans defenders have no time to worry about the wind chill factor when going up against the Titans and running back Derrick Henry, who torched Houston for 219 yards rushing and two touchdowns the last time the two teams met in late October.

“I am well aware,” said Texans defensive lineman Jonathan Greenard when the media reminded him of Henry’s performance. “We all know what the main objective is. 22 (Henry) is back there, and ultimately, we all know what they want to do when he is back there.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Houston wants to be more effective and build on the games they have played the last two weeks against playoff teams in the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. The weather could factor in how the offensive plays will be called, especially with rookie running back Dameon Pierce on the sidelines for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

“The conditions are always something you have to think about, but in the back of your mind, you have a job that has to get done,” said Texans offensive lineman A.J. Cann. “You have to go out there and play ball no matter the conditions; you still have to go out there and do what they pay us to do. So, when it is cold, you are going to feel those hits a little more than normal.”

Things become more difficult in cold weather for position players like wide receiver Amari Rodgers, a returner on special teams.

“The ball is harder,” said Rodgers. “But once you catch it and feel it, and get used to feeling it, you get used to it. In warmups, you have to catch as many balls as you can so you can tuck it and get used to feeling it in the cold.”

Tennessee will be without the services of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill and will call upon rookie Malik Willis who is making his third start. Houston will try and force him into passing the ball and limit him from escaping out of the pocket.

Even though the Texans’ record is 1-12-1 and the Titans are in a position to win the AFC South, all the records are out the window when the two rivals meet.

“This is still a big game despite the season. I don’t care what no one says; this is still Tennessee,” said Greenard.

Texans G-T Tytus Howard out with concussion against the Titans

Houston Texans left guard Tytus Howard is out against the Tennessee Titans as he left with Week 16 with a concussion.

The Houston Texans may be without their first-round tandem on the left side.

With 6:44 to go in the first quarter, Howard was injured on a Royce Freeman run. Howard went to the blue medical tent on the sideline and then into the locker room. The Texans stated that Howard was questionable to return as he was in the concussion protocol.

Howard had played left guard going back to Week 15 as first-rounder Kenyon Green from Texas A&M has missed with an ankle injury. The pairing of Howard and Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil opened up running lanes for Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale.

In the third quarter, the Texans downgraded Howard to out.

WATCH: QB Davis Mills fumbles for Texans’ first touchdown against the Titans

Davis Mills fumbled at the 1-yard line to help the Houston Texans score their first touchdown against the Tennessee Titans.

The Houston Texans have found uncommon ways to move the football and score points.

The past two games the Texans have deployed a two quarterback system with quarterback Jeff Driskel getting snaps in the same drives as starter Davis Mills. Nevertheless the ball moves and Houston scores points.

The Texans may have added a new one to their arsenl.

On third-and-goal from the Titans’ 6-yard line with 2:40 to go in the first quarter, Mills scrambled to his right and fumbled at the 1-yard line. Running back Rex Burkhead had the presence of mind to fall on the football for Houston’s first touchdown to tie the game 7-7.

WATCH: Texans defense sacks Titans QB Malik Willis

The Houston Texans sacked Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis in Week 16.

The Houston Texans had no problem reintroducing themselves to Malik Willis.

On a third-and-13 from the Tennessee Titans’ own 24-yard line, defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and linebacker Blake Cashman dropped the rookie quarterback for a 6-yard loss with 13:43 to go in the first quarter at Nissan Stadium in Week 16.

Willis made his first career start against the Texans on Oct. 30 in a 17-10 win at NRG Stadium. The Texans sacked Willis three times in that game.

Houston at least is a third of the way there if they are trying to sack Willis three times on Christmas Eve. Willis is 1-1 as a starter.

Texans vs. Titans live blog: 19-14 Texans, 4th Q — FINAL

The Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans square off in Week 16 to complete their season series. Follow along for all the updates from Nissan Stadium.

The Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans meet for their final encounter of the 2022 season.

Week 16 features a slew of games on Christmas Eve, and the Texans and Titans are no exception. Kickoff was delayed an hour and will now begin at 1:02 p.m. Central Time from Nissan Stadium.

The temperature is 19 degrees, sunny, and a 12 mile-per-hour wind in Nashville. Grounds crews cleared light snow from the field ahead of pregame warmups.

The Texans’ inactives revealed that DE Mario Addison would be out against the Titans.

The Titans are 7-7 and have the Jacksonville Jaguars nipping at their heels with a 7-8 mark. The two meet in Week 18. Tennessee can’t afford to drop a game to Houston, who can actually spare a win because their 1-12-1 record is a game and a half ahead of any other team vying for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

First quarter

13:43 — DE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and LB Blake Cashman meet at QB Malik Willis for the sack on third-and-13 from the Tennessee 24 to turn the Titans three-and-out on the game’s opening drive.

12:12 — QB Davis Mills sails it over everyone looking for TE Teagan Quitoriano on third-and-8 from the Houston 28. Three-and-out.

8:58 — Sooner or later you knew RB Derrick Henry was going to explode. The two-time NFL rushing champion galloped for a 48-yard touchdown. Extra point is good. 7-0, Titans

6:44 — RB Royce Freeman picks up three yards on first-and-10 from the Houston 36. LG Tytus Howard is injured on the play.

2:30 — The Texans use their first timeout ahead of a third-and-goal from the Titans’ 6-yard line. The Texans run the fumblerooski as Mills fumbles at the 1-yard line but RB Rex Burkhead recovers in the end zone for a touchdown. Extra point is good. 7-7

Second quarter

12:12 — The Texans appeared to take the lead with Mills throwing a 33-yard touchdown to WR Brandin Cooks, but it was nullified by offensive holding on TE Jordan Akins.

6:53 — Houston can’t convert on a third-and-goal from the Titans’ 9-yard line and have to kick a field goal. K Ka’imi Fairbairn nails a 25-yard kick. 10-7, Texans

4:23 — Willis loses a yard on third-and-4 from the Titans’ 45-yard line. There was a holding call on the Titans that would have negated the play anyway. DT Roy Lopez may have gotten away with smacking Willis directly in his face mask to make the tackle.

0:09 — The Texans take a knee to get to halftime. Houston gets the ball to start the second half.

8:59 — Willis rushes for a 14-yard touchdown, carrying Texans defenders along the way. The Titans did not face a single third down on the drive. Extra point is good. 14-10, Titans

1:54, Second Quarter — The Texans announced TE Teagan Quitoriano was questionable to return with a knee injury. Quitoriano was later downgraded to out.

1:41, Third Quarter — The Texans announced S M.J. Stewart was being evaluated for a concussion.

Lions inactive players vs. Panthers for Week 16

Lions inactive players vs. Panthers for Week 16

The Detroit Lions revealed the inactive player list for Saturday’s game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 16.

With three players already ruled out due to injuries, there was room for four healthy scratches.

Safety DeShon Elliott, reserve OL Kayode Awosika and fullback Jason Cabinda were all ruled out on Thursday due to their maladies.

The healthy scratches:

  • DL Michael Brockers
  • RB Craig Reynolds
  • DE Austin Bryant
  • OL Ross Pierschbacher

One interesting note there is Pierschbacher being designated by the team as a guard. He is nominally the backup center and has played center for nearly all of his college and pro career.

Report: Texans vs. Titans kickoff to be postponed up to an hour

The kickoff between the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans could be delayed up to an hour due to power outages in the Nashville area.

The Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans may have to wait a little bit before they can settle their season series.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Week 16 tilt between the Texans and Titans, slated for a 12:00 p.m. Central Time kickoff, is expected to be pushed back an hour due to power issues in the area.

The temperature on the ground in Nashville is 16 degrees. There was only light snowfall on the field at Nissan Stadium. Otherwise, it is sunny with no expectation for precipitation.

The last time the Texans played in Nashville on Nov. 21, 2021, a torrential downpour made for sloppy conditions as Houston prevailed 22-13.

The last time Houston had a weather delay was Nov. 15, 2020, when lightning in the area affected kickoff between the Texans and Cleveland Browns from FirstEnergy Stadium. The Texans lost 10-7.

Four predictions for Lions-Panthers

At the start of the 2022 season, nobody would have thought that the Detroit Lions would be 7-7 and in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Yet, here we are.

In this spirit of the improbable seeming possible, here are four bold predictions for the Detroit Lions as they set up to face the Carolina Panthers.

Lions vs. Panthers: How to watch, listen, stream the Christmas Eve game in Week 16

That means we get Detroit Lions football on Saturday, and it’s a game with serious playoff implications. The 7-7 Lions visit the 5-9 Panthers, who, despite their lowly record, actually control their own playoff destiny; if Carolina wins out, they win the NFC South.
