Report: Falcons won’t consider trading Matt Ryan or Julio Jones

When it comes to NFL news, quarterbacks tend to dominate the headlines. That’s especially true this offseason as more than a dozen teams could enter the new year with a new starting QB.

When it comes to NFL news, quarterbacks tend to dominate the headlines. That’s especially true this offseason as more than a dozen teams could enter the new year with a new starting QB.

The Atlanta Falcons have been one of the teams mentioned most frequently since the team holds the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 draft and just hired a new general manager and head coach. Don’t expect to see Matt Ryan going anywhere this offseason, though.

It was already unlikely that the Falcons would be able to move his monster contract, but according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team is not considering moving on from either Ryan or All-Pro WR Julio Jones.

Ryan is still a capable quarterback and is just five years removed from being the league MVP. As for Jones, his lowest yardage total in almost a decade was due to missing seven games in 2020. With Atlanta well out of playoff contention, interim coach Raheem Morris wisely held Jones out of the final few weeks of the season to recover from a severe hamstring injury.

Both players could potentially thrive in Arthur Smith’s offensive scheme. Whether or not the Falcons draft a quarterback in the first round remains to be seen. Either way, Ryan will remain the starting QB in 2021.

How does Deshaun Watson’s trade request impact the Lions and Matthew Stafford?

The Texans still don’t want to trade Watson away despite his demands

The ongoing drama in Houston has now come to a head. Texans Pro Bowl QB Deshaun Watson, the NFL’s leading passer in 2020, has officially requested a trade from the team according to numerous reports. The long-suspected news comes on the heels of the team hiring relative unknown David Cullen as the new head coach.

Watson has a no-trade clause in his massive four-year, $156 million contract extension signed just before the 2020 season kicked off. That means Watson has some control on where the Texans would trade him, if they even attempt to deal their face of the franchise.

There are several reports from Houston, notably from longtime Texans insider John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, that the team still does not intend to trade Watson despite his repeated desires to get away from the organization.

From a Lions standpoint, the hope is the Texans do not attempt to trade Watson — but if they do, they don’t come to that conclusion before Detroit makes a deal to trade Matthew Stafford. Watson jumps Stafford as the most attractive available NFL quarterback, either in free agency or a potential trade. Watson is just 25 and has made the last three Pro Bowls, guiding the Texans to two AFC South titles in that time as well as a playoff win in 2019.

Stafford, 32, has two years remaining on his contract. His cap hit is between $7 million and $16 million lower than Watson’s in those seasons. The Lions are attempting to get at least a first-round draft pick in return for their longtime QB. Watson figures to command significantly more in return, which will eliminate several teams that could also have an interest in Stafford.

Don’t add Aaron Rodgers to 49ers list of QB options just yet

The Green Bay Packers lost the NFC championship game, but an Aaron Rodgers trade isn’t imminent after his solemn press conference.

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-26 in the NFC championship game. Rodgers is now 1-4 in five trips to the title game. His post-game press conference led to plenty of speculation about his future, and due to the nature of the 49ers’ ongoing uncertainty at quarterback, they became a topic of discussion on various internet forums Sunday night.

Here’s how it went down:

Green Bay kicked a field goal on fourth-and-goal from the Buccaneers’ 8-yard-line with 2:09 to play to cut the Bucs’ lead from 31-23 to 31-26. Rather than let Rodgers try to find the end zone and give Green Bay a chance to tie the game, they settled for a short field goal and then never saw the ball again.

Rodgers said after the game he thought the team would have four shots to score from inside the 10, but he also told Packers reporters that he understood the decision to take the three points.

The loss marked a second consecutive defeat on the precipice of the NFL’s biggest stage, and head coach Matt LaFleur took the ball out of quarterback’s hands in the biggest moment. It’s understandable Rodgers would be upset after the game, but he didn’t say he wants out. That’s why discussion of where he’ll play next year feels premature.

Here’s what he did say.

He did say “a lot of guys futures, they’re uncertain, myself included,” per the the Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.

He also said, “I’m going to have to take some time away for sure and clear my head, kind of see what’s going on with everything. But it’s pretty tough right now,” via the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Ryan Wood.

Packers Wire’s Zach Kruse noted Rodgers was more somber than he’s ever been, and Kruse’s instant reaction to the presser reflected Rodgers’ uncertainty about the future, although he changed his mind after letting it marinate.

While we can’t start putting Rodgers in with other potential trade targets for the 49ers, it is worth monitoring  how this loss settles in with Rodgers over the next several weeks. One loss probably isn’t enough to usher him out of the only city he’s known in his 16-year NFL career.

But, the season began with Green Bay selecting quarterback Jordan Love, Rodgers’ eventual replacement, in the first round instead of getting their quarterback some help for the 2020 campaign. It ended with the ball being taken away from Rodgers so he could watch from the sideline as their Super Bowl hopes slipped away.

It was undoubtedly a heartbreaking loss for Rodgers, who is 37-years old and running out of chances to earn his second Super Bowl ring. His somber post-game press conference probably has more to do with a crushing defeat than a desire to play for another franchise. It’s worth keeping an eye on for the 49ers, but it’s still too early to pencil him in as a candidate to play quarterback for San Francisco next season.

Takk McKinley says the Falcons are not trading him

The Falcons were rumored to be shopping defensive end Takk McKinley ahead of this Tuesday’s trade deadline, but McKinley himself has put an end to the speculation on Twitter.

The Falcons were rumored to be shopping defensive end Takk McKinley ahead of this Tuesday’s trade deadline, but McKinley himself has put an end to the speculation on Twitter.

According to McKinley, a first-round pick in 2017, Atlanta has received multiple offers and turned them down.

Jason Butt of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the team wasn’t getting adequate compensation and will most likely keep McKinley, who’s in the final year of his rookie contract.

The Falcons declined McKinley’s fifth-year option during the offseason.

9 deals that would make sense before the NFL’s trade deadline

The NFL’s trade deadline is just a few days away. Here are 9 deals that would make sense before that time comes.

Earlier this week, Touchdown Wire’s own Mark Schofield ran the list of the teams on the fringe that are either buyers or sellers. And with the NFL’s trade deadline coming up next Tuesday, November 3 (a rather epic day for other reasons as well), the teams looking to bolster their rosters for a playoff run are calling the teams that are out of it, and looking to offload money for the inevitable rebuild.

Here are nine trades that would make sense for all involved before the deadline.

Report: Falcons in trade talks for DE Takk McKinley

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Falcons are in trade talks for starting defensive end Takk McKinley and are expected to move him before Tuesday’s deadline.

Things haven’t gone well for the Atlanta Falcons (1-6) this season, and it sounds like the team may be sellers at the NFL’s 2020 trade deadline.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Falcons are in trade talks for starting defensive end Takk McKinley and are expected to move him before Tuesday’s deadline.

McKinley, a first-round pick by Atlanta in 2017, has missed three games this season dealing with a groin injury. In less than four total games, McKinley has eight tackles, seven quarterback hits and one sack.

For his career, the former UCLA standout has started 25 games, recording 79 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 22 tackles for a loss and 45 QB hits. McKinley has consistently gotten good pressure during his time with the Falcons but hasn’t finished his rushes often enough.

Atlanta declined his fifth-year option in the offseason, so the team is likely just hoping to land a mid-to-late round draft pick since the season is already essentially lost.

49ers have taken calls on Dante Pettis trade

The 49ers have taken and made some trade calls on WR Dante Pettis per head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Dante Pettis’ time in a 49ers uniform could be coming to an end with the NFL trade deadline looming.

The team has taken calls about trading the. wide receiver according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. He told reporters in a video conference Friday that general manager John Lynch has had talks about moving the former second-round pick, although no deal is immediately on the horizon.

“It was two weeks before the trade deadline. I know John’s taken a number of calls on it,” Shanahan said. “I know he’s made some. It’s stuff that we do right now and we’ll see if it can help us and if it does, we won’t hesitate to do it, but nothing’s imminent. Dante is a part of our team and there’s a good chance that he could still stay a part of our team. If he does, when his number’s needed and he gets his opportunity, I plan on him being ready.”

San Francisco traded up in the second round of the 2018 draft to select Pettis out of the University of Washington. He caught a touchdown in his NFL debut, but got derailed early in the year by a knee injury he suffered while returning a punt.

Pettis rallied to finish the season strong and racked up 20 catches for 359 yards and four touchdowns over his final five games. Since then he’s struggled. Last season he caught just 11 balls for 109 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games and was a healthy scratch in the Super Bowl. This season he’s been a healthy scratch in two consecutive games and hasn’t registered a reception.

If the 49ers can get any sort of compensation for Pettis, it’d make sense for them to move him since he doesn’t have a role when the receiving corps is healthy.

The NFL trade deadline is set for Nov. 3.

Jags land LB Kamalei Correa from Titans via trade

The Jags have landed a new player in a rare in-division trade with the Titans.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans have agreed to make a rare in-division trade according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The trade is one that will send linebacker Kamalei Correa to Jacksonville, but the compensation is unknown at the moment.

Correa, 26, was a second round pick for the Baltimore Ravens in 2016 out of Boise State, but was traded to the Titans in 2018. From that point to now, he participated in 32 games with them and started in nine. He’ll enter his Jags tenure with 77 tackles and 8.5 sacks and could be a player the Jags view as a defensive end in addition to a linebacker.

This move comes as the Jags recently had injuries at both linebacker and defensive end with starters Myles Jack and Josh Allen missing Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. They also had Dakota Allen surface on Wednesday’s injury report as a non-participant while Jack and Allen returned to some capacity.

Correa wasn’t being utilized much for the Titans this season only seeing the field for 39 defensive snaps and 24 on special teams. He was placed on the Reserve/ COVID-19 list on Sept. 30 after testing positive for the Coronavirus, but was removed off the list for their game against the Buffalo Bills Tuesday. Despite that, the Titans ruled him inactive Tuesday, which led to him asking for a trade.

Update: Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky is reporting that the Jags and Titans plan to swap late-round selections for the transaction though it’s unknown which picks.
