Report: Raiders former 1st rounders Clelin Ferrell, Johnathan Abram on trade block

Raiders “aggressively” shopping Clelin Ferrell and Johnathan Abram ahead of the trade deadline

This offseason the Raiders were faced with the decision of whether to pick up the third-year option on their three 2019 first round picks. They opted for none of them. And with the trade deadline, two of them are being actively shopped according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The report says both DL Clelin Ferrell and S Johnathan Abram are on the trade block with one NFC Exec quoted as saying the Raiders have been “aggressive” in replacing players from the former regime with players who better fit “their personality.”

Ferrel would appear to have potential interest as a five-tech defensive end on a team that runs a 3-4 defense. They’d have to really believe a change in scheme could be the answer to unlocking his potential if they are to be willing to take on the former fourth overall pick’s contract for the remainder of this season.

Abram would come cheaper and has at times been a viable starting option as a strong safety. Veteran former Patriots safety Duron Harmon has started each for past four games and seen as many or more snaps than Abram in those games.

The Raiders had already traded 2019 second round pick Trayvon Mullen to the Cardinals prior to the start of the season. Should Ferrell and Abram be moved, it would leave just Josh Jacobs as the only player chosen in the top three rounds of that draft to still be on the team.

3 trades Patriots should consider making before the deadline

Here are 3 trades the Patriots should consider making before the November 1 deadline.

The New England Patriots have had a shaky start to the season thus far, but things could be worse.

With Mac Jones on the roster, things are promising at the quarterback position. Even if Jones isn’t an elite QB, he has shown that he can hang in the league as a mid-tier starter at worst. With that being said, since Jones is on a rookie contract, the Patriots should take advantage and make a move to bolster the roster, while the opportunity to do so is affordable.

All of that could go out the window when it’s Jones’ turn to get paid.

Keep in mind, these deals are not reports and are hypothetical scenarios of players who I think would fit perfectly with this roster. Trade compensation and salaries can and always will be worked out, even with coach Bill Belichick.

There’s still some time before the November 1 trade deadline, but here are three moves the Patriots should consider making before that date.

Browns, Panthers discussing trade for quarterback Baker Mayfield

Per report, the Carolina Panthers in urgent trade talks with the Cleveland Browns to acquire former Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The NFL’s offseason has moved into the mandatory minicamp portion of preparation for the 2022 season and there still hasn’t been a resolution to the [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] saga with the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns, who are still in a public relations nightmare surrounding Deshaun Watson’s off-field allegations of sexual assault, have been reluctant to move Mayfield, their starter for the last four seasons.

But as minicamp unfolds across the league, apparently talks have increased. According to CBS Analyst Jonathan Jones, who also spent time on the Panthers beat with the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers have a sense of urgency to get a deal done.

From Carolina’s perspective, they’d like to get a deal done soon so that Mayfield can have the most time to get acclimated to the Panthers’ offense and spend time with the wide receiver group he’d be throwing to.

At the moment, Sam Darnold looks to be the starter for the Panthers, and while he’s still a young player with room to grow, Mayfield is a better option at quarterback at this point in their careers.

49ers should absolutely not trade for Baker Mayfield

The #49ers should absolutely not trade for Baker Mayfield.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbxacb60r3mr0ac player_id=none image=https://ninerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The rumor mill has worked overtime this offseason with the 49ers quarterback situation. Speculation about Jimmy Garoppolo trade destinations and the 49ers’ perceived displeasure with Trey Lance have dominated headlines in the Bay Area since February.

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback situation is even worse for a multitude of football and non-football reasons. For now we’ll focus on Baker Mayfield, who wants out of Cleveland after they traded for Deshaun Watson.

It would seem that San Francisco and Cleveland’s QB situations would only matter to each other insofar as both teams have a starting-caliber quarterback available for trade with limited potential trade partners on the market. ESPN’s Dan Graziano has a different idea. He proposed a swap between the two clubs:

Why not trade them for each other? San Fran saves some money, Cleveland gets a better backup option than Brissett. Baker gets to work with Kyle [Shanahan] for a year and be next year’s [Mitchell] Trubisky.

This is WILD stuff for a couple of reasons.

First, he wrote “San Fran.” Pro tip: don’t do that. Don’t write it. Don’t say it. It should be eliminated from the lexicon when referring to San Francisco. “Frisco” is acceptable if “San Francisco” is too cumbersome.

Second, this is not something San Francisco should explore. Taking on Mayfield’s $18.8 million cap hit would eliminate a lot of the benefit of shedding the Garoppolo deal. Since they gave Nate Sudfeld $2 million fully guaranteed, the 49ers would have more than $20 million sunk into their two backup QBs if they acquired Mayfield.

There’s also the aspect of the 49ers being Lance’s team. Adding Mayfield would be some indication there’s a lack of faith in Lance to hold down the starting job. Competition is typically good, but San Francisco can’t have the biggest long-term investment in team history looking over his shoulder every time he makes a bad throw in his first year as a starter.

Most teams don’t worry about their backup quarterback since losing a starting signal caller is typically a death knell for the season. There are outliers, but the Bills, Chiefs, Packers and every other team with an elite QB doesn’t sink a ton of money into their backup ‘just in case.’

If the 49ers are going to jump into the Lance pool, they have to do so all the way and not worry about who’s behind him or what happens if he struggles.

San Francisco seems all set under center, and throwing Mayfield into the mix is a bad idea.

Darren Waller says Raiders told him he will not be traded

Raiders brass assured Darren Waller ‘There’s no trade that’s going to happen’ with Packers

Some shockwaves were sent through Raider Nation on Monday with a report that cited multiple NFL sources saying that not only were the Packers interested in acquiring tight end Darren Waller in a trade, but that there was a possibility a deal could happen during Thursday’s draft.

The assumption, of course, would be that when one of the Packers’ picks were coming up in the first round — either the 22 overall pick they got from the Raiders in the Davante Adams trade, or their original pick at 28 overall — that the two sides would potentially revisit the idea of making a deal for Waller.

Today — the day before the start of the draft — Waller appeared with Zach Gelb on CBS Sports Radio and was asked about his status with the Raiders. The key part being whether the team had told him one way or the other if the Raiders and Packers had any such intentions to include him in a trade.

“I’ve had talks with the team and they said this is not a thing that’s happening, [that] there’s no trade that’s going to happen,” said Waller.

Waller also added that “It’s a business, whatever happens happens” and that he’s “focused on what I can control.”

He was also asked if perhaps this report was a leak due to contract negotiations, to which he replied that he has “no idea” and that he lets his agent handle that stuff.

Waller was assured the team wasn’t considering trading him. And if we get through the first round Thursday night and Waller is still a member of the Las Vegas Raiders, they can certainly stick with that being their stance all along.

49ers options for Jimmy Garoppolo running low

The #49ers may find themselves without a trade partner for Jimmy Garoppolo.

The 49ers are quickly running out of trade partners for Jimmy Garoppolo. The Colts, once believed to be a prime candidate for a swap, are set to trade for Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. That takes Indianapolis off the table and leaves very few teams in the market for a starter.

While the Falcons now have an opening under center, it stands to reason that head coach Arthur Smith may be looking for a young quarterback he can mold and develop in his second season with the head job in Atlanta. They’re on the table though, which is at least some good news for San Francisco.

Other teams that might look to acquire Garoppolo are the Panthers, Saints and Seahawks.

In doubly bad news for San Francisco, not only are possible trade partners running thin, the price isn’t likely to get where they’d like. The Falcons received a 2022 third-round pick from the Colts for Ryan. He isn’t an MVP-caliber player anymore but it’s hard to believe many teams are going to be willing to pay more for Garoppolo’s services than the Colts did for a soon-to-be 37-year-old Ryan.

On top of all this, the Browns haven’t traded Baker Mayfield yet. Mayfield will take one of the openings, which leaves three teams possibly in the hunt for a QB. And it wouldn’t be a surprise if all of the teams left post-Mayfield trade would look to add a rookie via the draft. Both Carolina and Seattle pick in the top 10.

It might be strong to call this offseason a nightmare situation for the 49ers, but it’s certainly reaching the point where it might behoove them to release Garoppolo instead of continuing to explore a rapidly dwindling trade market.

Baker Mayfield gets support from social media amid trade speculation

The subject of trade speculation, Baker Mayfield received an outpouring of love and support for the Browns quarterback on social media.

The life of an NFL player can change drastically. From helping the Cleveland Browns to their first playoff win since 1994, Baker Mayfield became the subject of trade speculation Tuesday as the Browns flirted with trading for troubled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

In response to the rumors, Mayfield broke his social media hiatus to share his feelings on the matter on Twitter and Instagram.

Mayfield’s time in Cleveland hasn’t been smooth, but the former No. 1 overall pick helped make Browns football competitive again. In his time with Cleveland, Mayfield helped it achieve its first winning season since 2007. The 11-5 record in the 2020 season marked the third time since 1994 that the Cleveland Browns had a winning record. 1994 also was the last time the Browns had won a playoff game until Cleveland beat the Steelers in 2020.

In that AFC wild-card game, Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns in the Browns’ 48-37 win over the Steelers.

While 2021 didn’t go as Mayfield and Cleveland would have liked, Mayfield played through several injuries throughout the season according to Joe Rivera of the Sporting News.

As trade speculation ramped up yesterday, fans of the Cleveland Browns and Mayfield went to social media to express their support of Mayfield and their frustration with the Browns.

Check out some of the best social media reactions to the trade rumors below.

Baker Mayfield shares heart-felt message with Cleveland Browns fans via social media

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield broke his social media silence amid the focus of trade speculation surrounding the Sooners great.

Heading into the final year of his rookie deal, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has become the subject of trade rumors of late. Yesterday, rumors began popping up that the Cleveland Browns were looking into trading for quarterback Deshaun Watson of the Houston Texans. Watson has been the target of trade rumors all over the NFL after coming under fire for sexual assault and misconduct allegations in criminal and civil cases. A Harris County Grand jury opted not to pursue criminal proceedings, but Watson still faces a civil suit related to the claims.

Baker Mayfield, who is currently recovering from offseason shoulder surgery that limited him down the stretch, reflected on his time in Cleveland. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Mayfield could still be subject to trade discussions whether or not the Browns acquire Watson from the Texans,

Taking a break from his social media hiatus, Mayfield shared a message to Cleveland fans on Twitter and Instagram. Mayfield said, “This is not a message with hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me.”

Mayfield went on to say, “We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through the ups and downs. I have no clue what happens next, which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process. I can only control what I can, which is trusting in God’s plan throughout this process.”

While Mayfield’s career with the Browns has been an up and down experience, he’s been a part of building a team that hadn’t had much success in the two decades before he arrived. Before beating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2020 wild card round, the Cleveland Browns had not won a playoff game since 1994.

Mayfield was 21 of 34 for 263 yards and three touchdowns in that game. They lost the following week by five points to the Kansas City Chiefs, but Mayfield has been a massive part of changing the culture and the narrative surrounding Cleveland Browns football.

It can’t be easy hearing your name attached to trade rumors, and Baker Mayfield’s never been shy about sharing his feelings. Mayfield said, “I have given this franchise everything I have. That is something I’ve done at every stage and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap. Whatever happens, I just want to say thank you to the fans who truly embraced who I am and the mentality that aligned so well with this city’s hard-working people.”

As Mayfield awaits more clarity about his playing future, the Sooners great will be honored after OU’s spring game with a statue in Heisman Park in Norman, Oklahoma celebrating his 2017 Heisman trophy selection.

Where Jimmy Garoppolo market sits after Deshaun Watson news and other QB moves

How Deshaun Watson and other QB news have affected the #49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo.

The NFL offseason roller coaster of quarterbacks has given the 49ers a particularly wild ride.

Trades, re-signings, the NFL combine and Deshaun Watson likely entering the fray has left even more uncertainty around Jimmy Garoppolo’s future than there was going into the offseason.

Garoppolo at one point figured to be the most prominent quarterback to move in the offseason. Now the new league year hasn’t opened and a slew of QB moves have limited a market that might’ve already been thin. However, it isn’t all bad for San Francisco with a handful of teams still in need of an upgrade under center.

Let’s take a look at each QB move and how it affects Garoppolo’s trade market:

NFL trade market could be a seller’s market this offseason

Matt Ryan. Saquon Barkley. Why are those the two big names, along with Carson Wentz, on the trade market after GMs talked? Could be a sign of a seller’s market and buyer beware:

The NFL combine is in full swing Wednesday with players joining the media availability and head coaches also on the docket to talk. While a majority of players will say the right things, as they have been training to do, it will be interesting what quotes of interest come out of those times in front of the media.

Yesterday, many of the top front-office decision-makers had their time in front of the cameras including Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry. Berry talked about a lot of things including OT Jack Conklin being at the facility in Berea “every day” rehabbing from the 2021 season-ending injury.

The other front-office executives that talked had a few interesting things to say but nothing earth-shattering, as expected.

The one piece of information that has seemed to be settling in is related to the trade market. It looks as if most, if not all, of the high-tier quarterbacks will be staying with their teams.

With that in mind, three bigger names seemed to be placed directly on the trading block during combine interviews.

The first, Carson Wentz, has been known to be available. His poor performance down the stretch has placed Indianapolis in a difficult position after trading significant resources for the quarterback just last year. The Colts are ready to win now but need a passer. They are “working through it.”

Second, Matt Ryan’s name now might be at the top of the QB trade list. With Jimmy Garoppolo having shoulder surgery, Ryan could be the best signal-caller available. He is available if “someone gives you an offer you can’t refuse.” Atlanta has salary cap issues are could be moving toward a youth movement soon. Dealing Ryan could accelerate the process while lowering their cap problems.

Finally, Saquon Barkley was placed squarely on the block as the New York Giants are “open for business” when it comes to their roster. Barkley’s availability is interesting given where he was selected, the value of his position and his injury history.

With none of the top quarterbacks likely available in trades and a seemingly weak draft class near the top, placing Ryan and Barkley, and even Wentz, on the market is a smart move. While Ryan’s contract and production may not “deserve” significant compensation, the lack of other options could get the Falcons the kind of offer that would force their hand. Even with all the mentioned limitations with Barkley, teams desperate for a final piece could give the Giants something worthwhile.

The Wentz situation will be an interesting one. Few believe that the current QB class has anyone ready to lead a playoff team right away and there are doubts any will become top-tier guys in the NFL. While Wentz has shown his warts, another team could believe he is their best option and that they can get the best out of him.

With a weaker than normal top end of the NFL draft, enough teams believing they are ready to compete in 2022 and enough teams looking to transition on from a select few veterans, the NFL trade market could be one that benefits the sellers not the buyers. With the Browns in the buyers’ segment of teams looking to compete in 2022, that could be bad news. Only time will tell.
