Commanders’ players react to Marshon Lattimore trade

Commanders’ players are all excited about the addition of Marshon Lattimore.

Washington general manager Adam Peters made a significant move on Tuesday, trading for four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore. With the trade, Peters sent a message to his team that he believes the 7-2 Commanders can contend for the Super Bowl this season.

Lattimore met with the media on Wednesday and expressed excitement about playing for the Commanders and reuniting with some of his college teammates, including Terry McLaurin.

Washington players are also happy about the addition of Lattimore and what it means going forward. They understand Lattimore is an elite player in a position of need, and Peters paid the price to help the current playoff push.

On Wednesday, several players, including Jayden Daniels, Bobby Wagner and Noah Brown, reacted to Lattimore’s addition. McLaurin, Brown, and Jalyn Holmes were teammates with Lattimore at Ohio State.

Former Chiefs and Bills WR should be on the Steelers radar

The Bills have released Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

On the same day that the Buffalo Bills made a huge trade for former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper, the team also released wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to make room on the roster. MVS only had two receptions on the season in six games and found himself buried on the Bills depth chart.

But based on his history, Valdes-Scantling has plenty of talent and is certainly a guy the Pittsburgh Steelers should consider after missing out on Davante Adams. Adams was traded to the New York Jets on Tuesday marking the second premier wide receiver who slipped through the Steelers fingers.

The Steelers signed Van Jefferson in the offseason and drafted Roman Wilson in hopes of filling the void left when the team traded away Diontae Johnson. Through six games, the tandem has combined for eight catches, all courtesy of Jefferson.

In 2020, Valdes-Scantling led the league with 20.9 yards per reception. MVS had his career-best in receptions in 2022 with 42 catches while he was part of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Steelers AFC North foe trades away star wide receiver

The Browns have traded away wide receiver Amari Cooper.

There has been lots of wide receiver news on Tuesday but unfortunately none of it has directly involved the Pittsburgh Steelers. First we get word that Davante Adams signed with the New York Jets, leaving the Steelers high and dry.

Now, the Cleveland Browns have traded away their best receiver, Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills. This is according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.

The Browns are off to a miserable 1-5 start and it looks like they are going to sell off players to get some draft capital since they are handcuffed to Deshaun Watson’s massive waste of a contract.

Nevertheless, even though we are ok with the Browns giving up on the season, it stings to see another talented wide receiver hit the market and land with an AFC opponent. At the same time, the Steelers continue to flounder at the wide receiver position.

Report: Commanders ‘would love to add’ a wide receiver by trade deadline

Would the Commanders make a move for a veteran receiver?

The Washington Commanders wide receiver position remains a question mark. There is Terry McLaurin and plenty of questions. Of course, through two games under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, McLaurin has only eight receptions for 39 yards.

McLaurin’s lack of big plays isn’t an indication that he’s done — far from it. Kingsbury’s plan through two games has been for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to get rid of the ball quickly, which includes a lot of screens and shorter passes to the wide receivers.

There is a troubling statistic regarding Washington’s wide receivers through two games, though.

https://twitter.com/LordReebs/status/1835699759346053502

That number will obviously change in the coming weeks, but the Commanders could use help at receiver. General manager Adam Peters was not sold on former first-round pick Jahan Dotson, and he was traded within the division to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Before the regular season began, Washington signed Noah Brown, who caught three passes in Sunday’s Week 2 win. Rookie Luke McCaffrey has yet to make an impact, but his time could be coming.

In his Friday column, Dan Graziano of ESPN mentioned that the Commanders are one of five teams that would love to add a wide receiver before the trade deadline.

The two receivers he mentioned were Diontae Johnson (Panthers) and Davante Adams (Raiders).

Adams, of course, would be the splashier acquisition, but it would come with risk. He will be 32 in December. However, Adams’ salary would be no problem for Washington. Since entering the NFL in 2014, Adams has caught 886 passes for 10,950 yards and 96 touchdowns. Graziano named the Jets, where his former quarterback Aaron Rodgers is currently, as Adams’ potential landing spot.

Johnson, who was traded to the Panthers this offseason, spent his first five NFL seasons in Pittsburgh. Johnson has five receptions in two games for the struggling Panthers in 2024.

It will be interesting to see if Peters decides to part with draft compensation for a veteran player. Thus far, he has been unwilling to do that, but if the Commanders are in contention by the start of November and still lacking production at wide receiver, a trade could be an option, but it may not be a star player.

Niners pressure on WR Brandon Aiyuk could benefit the Steelers

The Steelers might be getting closer to a Brandon Aiyuk trade.

It sounds like the San Francisco 49ers are done waiting for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, the hold-in Aiyuk held this offseason and preseason was one thing but now it is time for him to come practice and prepare to play.

If the Niners decide it’s now or never for Aiyuk and if he simply refuses it could necessitate a trade even if it isn’t the best deal for San Francisco. Pittsburgh has sat back patiently and waited to see how all of this will play out and they might finally be reaching a point where they will get some payoff for waiting.

If Aiyuk doesn’t blink and the Niners stand pat, that will become a San Francisco issue with fines and suspensions and such. But if the Steelers have really carried a barebones wide receiver group this far in anticipation of trading for Aiyuk, what is their next step?

Patriots trade Pro Bowl pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Falcons

Many Lions fans clamored for Judon, a 4-time Pro Bowler and Detroit native, but the team never had interest in the aging vet who wants a big new payday

One of the names that Lions fans have been buzzing about as a potential acquisition to help bolster the pass rush is now off the market. Matthew Judon, a Detroit native and product of Grand Valley State University in Michigan, is heading from the Patriots to the Falcons.

Judon is a four-time Pro Bowler and bagged 15.5 sacks in his last full season in New England in 2022. At 270 pounds and a speedy 6-foot-5 build, Judon definitely fits the mold of what the Lions like at the EDGE position, though there was never even one iota of evidence that Detroit or GM Brad Holmes had any interest in trading for him.

Judon, now 32, missed most of last season with an elbow injury. He was embroiled in a hostile contract dispute with the Patriots, one that the rebuilding Patriots wanted washed from their hands.

The Falcons flipped a third-round pick in 2025 for Judon. The Lions don’t have a third-round pick next year, having already dealt it to select offensive lineman Giovanni Manu in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. But again, all indications are the Lions were never going to be involved in any deal for Judon.

Niners’ reported asking price for WR Brandon Aiyuk is more than reasonable

The Steelers can’t seem to escape this Brandon Aiyuk drama.

For everyone saying they are tired of reading about the Brandon Aiyuk drama, trust us, we want some closure on it as well. Every single day there are reports and rumors coming out that connect the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers on some level.

The latest involves the reported trade demands for Aiyuk, courtesy of NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Matt Maiocco. According to Maiocco, the Niners are asking for second- and third-round picks as part of the deal.

No mention of a premier player in the deal from the Steelers or a wide receiver going back. Just draft picks.

If this is the case, we don’t get why the Steelers haven’t jumped on this deal. Unless it is less about the trade and more about the contract demands on Aiyuk once he joins the team. There are reports that Aiyuk is asking for $30 million per year. This could be a huge stumbling block for any team looking to add him.

Niners writer offers up interesting trade offer for WR Brandon Aiyuk

Would you take this trade for Brandon Aiyuk?

With the news that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has officially requested a trade from the Niners, speculation can now begin about where he will land.

Niners Wire editor Kyle Madson asked his fellow NFL editors if they thought their team would entertain a trade and if so, what that would look like. As the Pittsburgh Steelers editor, I threw my hat in the ring and Madson came back with a fascinating counteroffer.

We originally offered a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick. I would in no way send a first-round pick for Aiyuk. This is no dig on him but those picks are just too valuable to a team like the Steelers with Omar Khan as general manager.

Here’s what Madson offered as a counter that included the 2025 second-round pick but threw in edge Alex Highsmith over another draft choice:

It’s tough to find a deal that works with the Steelers. Highsmith is probably the best player they have that the 49ers would want and potentially get. It’s a steep ask, but San Francisco would need a player who could help them this year and Highsmith would immediately become their second-best edge rusher.

A trade like this would be contingent on just how confident the Steelers are with second-year edge defender Nick Herbig. Fans may look at this as completely unrealistic but when you consider the Steelers traded away wide receiver Diontae Johnson for a starting cornerback with no backup plan, you understand anything is possible with this Steelers front office.

Personally, I make this trade and then hit free agency for a veteran edge defender or even two as a security net with Herbig.

Trading a 1st-round pick almost unheard of for Steelers

The Steelers have only traded their first-round pick once since 1970.

If the Pittsburgh Steelers do figure out a way to make a trade for an elite wide receiver, it is likely going to cost them at least one first-round pick in the NFL draft. Wide receivers are a premium position in the NFL right now with those at the top basically able to write their own checks.

Could the cost of the trade be the only thing holding the Steelers back? Going back to 1970, the Steelers have only traded a first-round pick one time.

That was in 2019 when the team traded their first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft to the Miami Dolphins for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. This was a rare in-season trade.

The Steelers traded away wide receiver Diontae Johnson at the start of free agency leaving George Pickens as the only starting receiver left on the roster. Unless Pittsburgh pulls off a big trade, veteran Van Jefferson might be the best option Pittsburgh has to start on offense.

Texans trade up with Eagles for No. 78 overall pick

The Houston Texans are on the clock after making a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Houston Texans are back on the clock.

After using their first two picks at their respective draft positions, the Texans moved up eight spots from pick No. 86 to pick No. 78 in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Houston gave up the No. 86 and No. 123 pick to secure a higher draft selection.

This should come as little shock to Houston fans as general manager Nick Caserio has been known for his aggressiveness in trades. Last season, Caserio made a franchise-record eight moves during draft weekend, including trading multiple picks to move up to No. 3 overall and select eventual Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson Jr.

Houston selected Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter with the No. 42 pick. At pick No. 59, the Texans secured a long-term swing tackle in Notre Dame’s Blake Fisher.

Defensive tackle, linebacker and safety remain the top needs for the Texans entering the third round, though it’s expected that Houston will use the now-No. 78 pick on USC defensive back Calen Bullock.

Texans’ remaining 2024 NFL draft picks

  • Round 4, Pick 127
  • Round 6 (188, from Raiders through Patriots and Vikings)

  • Round 6 (189, from Broncos through Rams and Bills)

  • Round 7 (238, from Saints)

  • Round 7 (247)
