NFL standings, Week 4: All 3 of Dolphins’ division rivals lost Sunday

A day before the Dolphins’ Monday night matchup against the Titans, the rest of the AFC East had a rough Sunday.

September was a bleak month for the Miami Dolphins, but it has a chance to end on a positive note for the team. In Week 4, the rest of the AFC East left the door ajar for the Dolphins to make up some ground in a race that was quickly slipping away.

In the first slate of games on Sunday, the New York Jets couldn’t get their offense going against the Denver Broncos and lost, 10-9. Then in the later group of games, the San Francisco 49ers breezed through the New England Patriots for a 30-13 victory. To cap the night, the Baltimore Ravens bulldozed the Buffalo Bills in a 35-10 primetime blowout.

With all three of the Dolphins’ division rivals losing Sunday, here’s the state of the AFC East heading into Miami’s Monday night contest against the Tennessee Titans:

  1. Buffalo Bills: 3-1 (1-0 vs. division)
  2. New York Jets: 2-2 (1-0 vs. division)
  3. Miami Dolphins: 1-2 (0-1 vs. division)
  4. New England Patriots: 1-3 (0-1 vs. division)

The Dolphins’ loss to the Bills in Week 2 means that Miami can’t move into second place Monday, regardless of the result. But a win would move the team just a game behind first place as it tries to tread water without Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback.

The playoffs are still way off on the horizon, but if they started today, this would be the seeding:

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: 4-0 (3-0 vs. AFC)
  2. Houston Texans: 3-1 (2-0 vs. AFC)
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers: 3-1 (2-1 vs. AFC)
  4. Buffalo Bills: 3-1 (2-1 vs. AFC)
  5. New York Jets: 2-2 (2-1 vs. AFC)
  6. Indianapolis Colts: 2-2 (1-1 vs. AFC)
  7. Los Angeles Chargers: 2-2 (1-2 vs. AFC)

The Dolphins would slide into one of the wild card slots if they manage to beat the Titans.

NFL standings 2024: Bills out to early lead in AFC East

What else is new?

It’s the Buffalo Bills in front and three teams trying to keep up in the AFC East. What else is new?

After the first two weeks of the 2024 season, the Bills are the only team in the division with a pair of wins. The Miami Dolphins are in a three-way tie with the New England Patriots and New York Jets, although it’s Miami that sits at the bottom of the list, thanks to a tiebreaker.

With plenty of jockeying for position left to do over the next four months, the divisional standings look like this:

  1. Buffalo Bills: 2-0 (1-0 in division)
  2. New England Patriots: 1-1
  3. New York Jets: 1-1
  4. Miami Dolphins: 1-1 (0-1 in division)

The Dolphins sit at the bottom because they’re the only team with a divisional loss. The Jets and Patriots are set to play in Week 3, so one of those two teams will drop down to 1-2 with an 0-1 divisional record next weekend.

With Tua Tagovailoa out of action after suffering another concussion in a blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Dolphins have bigger things to worry about than their one-game deficit in the AFC East race, though.

NFL standings, Week 18: Jaguars end year on outside looking in

The Jaguars fumbled away their season by losing five of their last six games.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ path to the playoffs was boiled down to one scenario Saturday night.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers got a 17-10 win against the Baltimore Ravens, who were resting many of their starters, the Jaguars couldn’t earn a wild card berth. Jacksonville’s only path to the postseason was to win Sunday against the Tennessee Titans and secure the AFC South.

They didn’t pull it off. Instead, the Jaguars were bounced from the playoff field with a 28-20 loss in Nashville. After finishing November with an 8-3 record, the Jaguars won just one of their last six games to fumble away the division title to the Houston Texans.

With the 2023 regular season officially in the books, here are the final standings in the AFC:

NFL standings, Week 17: Jaguars still atop three-way AFC South tie

The AFC South race will come down to the last day of the regular season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars finally got a December win, but didn’t get the help they needed to clinch the AFC South.

Instead the division will be decided in Week 18 after all three teams tied for the lead got wins Sunday. Jacksonville ended its four-game losing streak by beating the Carolina Panthers, the Indianapolis Colts held off a late surge from the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Houston Texans beat the brakes off the Tennessee Titans.

With only one week of regular season action left for each of the three teams, the Jaguars need only a Week 18 win against the Titans to lock up the title. If Jacksonville stumbles next week, the battle between the Colts and Texans in Indianapolis will crown the AFC South champ.

Elsewhere in the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens laid claim to the No. 1 seed in the conference with a demolition of the Miami Dolphins. With all of the AFC’s teams done with Week 17, here’s how the standing look across the conference with one week left:

NFC standings: 49ers still on top despite hiccup vs. Ravens

Monday night was bad, but the 49ers are still No. 1 in the NFC, AND they control their own destiny to the top spot.

The 49ers would’ve loved to have a Week 16 win over the Ravens. It would’ve set them up to win at Washington in Week 17 to seal up the No. 1 seed. Now they’ll need to win their next two.

While most everything went wrong Monday night, San Francisco still sits atop the NFC playoff picture, where they’re No. 1 thanks to tiebreakers over the Lions and Eagles.

Here’s what the standings look like going into Week 17:

1. 49ers (11-4)
2. Eagles (11-4)
3. Lions (11-4)
4. Buccaneers (8-7)
5. Cowboys (10-5)
6. Rams (8-7)
7. Seahawks (8-7)

It’s pretty simple the rest of the way for the 49ers. They need to win out to get the top seed. They hold tiebreakers on the Lions, Eagles and Cowboys so they’re in a good spot. If they lose one of their next two, they’ll need help with losses from Philadelphia and Detroit.

49ers get help from Dolphins in NFC playoff race, none from Vikings

How Sunday’s games affected the 49ers and the race for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

The 49ers won’t be able to clinch the NFC’s No. 1 seed with a win over the Ravens on Monday night. They did get a little help in their hunt for the No. 1 seed though.

To clinch that top spot in the conference the 49ers needed a win and to see the Lions, Cowboys and Eagles all lose in Week 16. Philadelphia won’t play until Monday afternoon, but the Lions and Cowboys both played Sunday.

Detroit snuck past the Vikings 30-24 in a game that ended on an interception thrown by former 49ers QB Nick Mullens, who started the game for Minnesota. The Lions moved to 11-4 with the win and stayed one game behind the 49ers.

Dallas, on the other hand, did not stay one game back when they lost 22-20 to the Dolphins on a last-second field goal by Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders. That loss dropped the Cowboys to 10-5, which puts them two games behind the 49ers in the hunt for the top seed. It also puts them behind the 10-4 Eagles.

The Cowboys are now the No. 5 seed heading into Monday. Philadelphia is the No. 3, and Detroit is the No. 2 behind San Francisco.

If the 49ers get a win over the Ravens on Monday, it will eliminate Dallas from the race for the No. 1 seed.

If the Eagles lose Monday, and the 49ers win, the Eagles would also be. out of the running and San Francisco would only be battling Detroit down the stretch.

Monday night’s game vs. Baltimore isn’t necessarily a must-win for San Francisco, but it’s a huge game for them in the standings that would only become bigger if the Giants somehow upset the heavily-favored Eagles.

NFL standings, Week 16: All 4 AFC South teams lose

The Jaguars are fortunate that no AFC South team had a good Christmas Eve.

The Jacksonville Jaguars got an early Christmas present when the rest of their division fell flat on their face Sunday.

The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans — who entered the weekend in a three-way tie with the Jaguars for the division lead — lost to the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns, respectively.

But Jacksonville followed suit with an embarrassing, blowout loss of its own against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For another week, all three teams in the AFC South remain tied.

The Jaguars got help elsewhere in the AFC too with the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos both dropping games that would’ve put the pressure on in the wild card race. Still, none of that will matter if the Jaguars can’t pull out of their tailspin.

With Week 16 in the books, here’s how the standings and playoff picture across the AFC look with two weeks of regular season action left to play:

NFL standings 2023: Margin for error gone for Jaguars after Week 15

The race for playoff spots in the AFC is razor tight.

When December began, the Jacksonville Jaguars were 8-3 and two games up on the rest of the AFC South with tiebreakers to boot. Three straight losses have changed things, though.

Now, the Jaguars are in a three-way tie with the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans with three weeks left to play.

It isn’t just the AFC South either. The entire conference has become a horse race with no shortage of winning records pushing for playoff spots.

The Ravens entered Week 15 as the only team in the conference with double-digit wins. Now they’re even further out in front of the race for the No. 1 seed.

Here’s how the #49ers can clinch the NFC West and a top 3 seed in the playoffs:

The 49ers in Week 14 locked up a playoff spot when the Giants upset the Packers on Monday Night Football. In Week 15 they have a chance to lock up a top four seed by clinching the NFC West for the second consecutive year.

It’s an easy road to the division crown for San Francisco. Here’s their two clinching scenarios:

Typically winning a division only guarantees a top four spot and a home playoff game. However, for the 49ers because the NFC South has been so aggressively mediocre, they’d clinch a top three seed with a victory to notch their 11th win. The NFC South winner will have a maximum of 10 wins.

The 49ers and Rams are both slated for 1:05pm Pacific Time kickoffs. San Francisco will be in Arizona to face the Cardinals, while the Rams will be at home hosting the Commanders.

NFL standings 2023: Jaguars still on top of slumping AFC South

The Jaguars’ tenuous grasp of the AFC South lead held despite their Week 14 loss.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ tenuous hold on first place in the AFC South held for another week, despite a 31-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

After entering Week 14 with a one-game lead in the division over both the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans, losses for the top three AFC South teams kept the Jaguars out in front. Only the last place Tennessee Titans managed to pull off a win, despite playing the toughest competition.

With the tiebreaker in hand, Jacksonville doesn’t need to do much to secure the division title. The losses can’t kept stacking up, though.
