Caleb Williams, Marvin Harrison Jr. are NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year favorites

Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr. are expected to be the stars of the 2024 NFL rookie class.

No one is ready to call the Chicago Bears Super Bowl favorites just yet, but pundits and commentators are high on the Bears’ chances to make the NFL playoffs and establish Williams as a frontrunner to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2024. In addition, it is widely viewed that Caleb Williams, fresh from USC, will shatter Bears rookie QB records. Chicago has not had a first-year quarterback with his level of talent. Yet, as great as Caleb might be, Marvin Harrison Jr. will have something to say about the rookie of the year race.

Cardinals Wire has more to say about Harrison:

“Harrison immediately becomes the most talented receiver on the team. Before he was drafted, the top three on the depth chart were Michael Wilson, drafted in the third round in 2023, Greg Dortch and free agent signing Chris Moore. None has even reached 600 yards in a season.

“Harrison should be the Cardinals’ starting ‘X’ receiver and probably will be the team’s leading receiver, at least among the receivers. Because of tight end Trey McBride, it is possible that Harrison won’t lead the entire team in receptions, receiving yards or touchdowns, but he should be the top producer among the receivers.

“Anything short of a 1,100-yard season would probably be a disappointment.”

Numbers are important, but overall team impact matters more. Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr. would both trade a measure of statistical output for added victories and a playoff berth. Those achievements would mean more than an NFL Rookie of the Year honor.

Texans QB C.J. Stroud made convincing case for NFL Rookie of the Year against the Bucs

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud made a strong case in Week 9 as to why he should be considered for NFL Rookie of the Year.

The NFL Honors aren’t until the week before the Super Bowl in February, but the campaigning for on-field awards is ongoing.

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud blazed the campaign trail in Week 9 with a 470-yard, five-touchdown performance in the 39-37 comeback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

According to Jarrett Bailey from the Touchdown Wire, Stroud made a convincing case as to why the No. 2 overall pick should be considered for NFL Rookie of the Year.

Right now, the brilliant young quarterback is on pace for 4,540 yards, which would be a new rookie record. He is also on pace for 28 touchdown passes- that would be the second most in history for a rookie behind only Justin Herbert’s 31 in 2020. And if he replicates his touchdowns and interceptions in the second half of the season, that would give him a 28-2 ratio which would be the best touchdown-to-interception ratio in NFL history for single-season.

While Stroud displayed a coolness and touch in his fourth win, eighth start of the season, coach DeMeco Ryans saw a precision passer throughout the stretch.

“The accuracy — that was the one thing that stood out with C.J.,” Ryans told reporters Monday. “You see the passes that Tank [Dell] caught, but just being able to slow the film down and pause it and see the precision of where those throws were — it’s just unreal to see how precise he was.”

Stroud and the Texans take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 10 at Paycor Stadium.

Two former Ohio State players named finalists for NFL AP awards

Former Ohio State football players continue to make Buckeye Nation proud! #GoBucks

Even the most critical college football fan can’t argue with the fact that the Ohio State football program churns out a ton of NFL players. Going even further, unless it’s just spouting off nonsense, even SEC fans would have to agree that some of those players have turned out to be some of the top performers at the highest level of the game.

So much so that former Buckeyes have won numerous awards in the NFL including instances of being rushing leaders, receiving leaders, rookie recognitions, and more.  The latest comes by way of two players that got their career training in Columbus that have been named finalists for two AP NFL awards.

The 49ers’ Nick Bosa is up for one of the most coveted awards handed out yearly as the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year along with Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. Bosa is the odds-on favorite to take the award home as the league’s sack leader, but it’s not official until — well … it’s official.

But it’s not just Bosa. Rookie Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson is also one of three finalists for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award along with San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy and Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III.

Wilson led all rookies with a total of 83 catches and 1,103 yards during the 2022-2023 season. He also scored 4 touchdowns and averaged 13.3 yards per catch.

Ohio State has seen this before. The program went on a pretty remarkable run of winning the NFL’s Rookie Defensive Player of the Year Awards. The Buckeyes had a player take home the honor four out of five years from 2016 through 2020 with Joey Bosa (2016), Marshon Lattimore (2017), Nick Bosa (2019), and Chase Young (2020) all making Buckeye fans proud.

Time will tell if we’ll see another trophy for a former Ohio State player, but you have to like the chances of at least one of these coming to fruition. The winners of the AP awards will be announced at the NFL Honors ceremony on February 9.

2022 NFL Rookie of the Year: Kenny Pickett, Aiden Hutchinson lead early favorites

There’s plenty of value on the offensive side while the defensive odds look a lot like the draft order.

With the 2022 NFL Draft officially in the books, it’s time for bettors to take all the knowledge gained over the last few weeks and attempt to pick a Rookie of the Year winner on both offense and defense.

One is already looking like a more difficult challenge than the other.

On the defensive side of the ball, top picks Aiden Hutchinson and Kayvon Thibodeaux lead the way with +450 odds at Tipico. Offensively, quarterback Kenny Pickett (+500) and wideout Drake London (+700) lead the class. It’s certainly looking like oddsmakers care more about draft position when it comes to defense.

Here’s a look at the rest of the incredibly early odds for offensive and defensive Rookie of the Year.

Washington great Charley Taylor dies

Washington great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Charley Taylor dies at age 80.

Pro Hall of Famer and Washington Redskins great Charley Taylor has died at the age of 80 (1941-2022).

Taylor spent his entire 14-year career with Washington (1964-1977), drafted in the first round (3rd overall) of the 1964 NFL draft from Arizona State.

Taylor finished his career as the all-time NFL leader in receptions (649), was first-team All-Pro in 1967, an eight-time Pro Bowler, voted to the All-1960’s team, and enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the 1984 class.

He concluded his career amassing 9,110 receiving yards and 79 touchdowns with Washington. Though Taylor never played in a 16-game regular season, he still remains second in franchise history in receptions (649) and receiving yards (9,110) and has the most receiving touchdowns (79) in Washington history. Taylor also rushed 442 times for 1,488 yards and 11 touchdowns overall.

Wearing No. 42 his entire Redskins career, Taylor was drafted as a running back and excelled out of the backfield as a receiver his first few years in Washington. During his rookie 1964 season, Taylor accumulated 1,569 yards from scrimmage (755 rushing, 814 receiving) becoming the first player in NFL history to gain 700 yards both rushing and receiving and was voted the Associated Press NFL Rookie of the Year.

The former Arizona State Sun Devil led the NFL in receptions in the 1966 and 1967 seasons. He was moved full-time to wide receiver beginning in the 1967 season.

Taylor would conclude his NFL career, serving on Joe Gibbs’ Washington Redskins coaching staff as wide receivers coach (1981-1993).

Chargers QB Justin Herbert named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert earned the honors nine times during the 2020 season.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been named the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year, becoming the team’s first player to win it since wide receiver Keenan Allen in 2013.

After QB Tyrod Taylor was ruled out prior to the Week 2 matchup against the Chiefs with a punctured lung, Herbert gave no reason to resort back to him upon returning.

Herbert threw for 4336 yards and 31 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He also recorded 5 touchdowns rushing. Along the way, he broke multiple records.

Herbert won the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week award nine times in 2020, tying Ben Roethlisberger for the most since 2004.

Herbert beat out Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson. The other finalists were Jaguars running back James Robinson, Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Herbert is the current favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, which is recognized by the league.
