NFL Week 15 power rankings: Rams stay put after statement win

The Rams didn’t move up after crushing the Seahawks.

Despite winning their last two games, the Los Angeles Rams haven’t moved in the NFC standings. They remain on the outside looking in, sitting seventh in the conference behind the Seahawks and Vikings in the wild-card race.

Their wins were both impressive, too, blowing out the Cardinals 34-7 and beating the Seahawks 28-12 to snap their five-game winning streak.

As big of a statement as Sunday’s victory was, the Rams didn’t move up in Doug Farrar’s power rankings for Touchdown Wire. They remain 13th, directly behind the Steelers at No. 12 and the 11th-ranked Titans. They’re also one spot ahead of the Bears and two in front of the 6-7 Raiders.

Here’s what Farrar wrote about the Rams and how they’ve improved in the last two weeks.

Over the past couple weeks, Rams head coach Sean McVay has made a couple effective adjustments to his offense. The Rams are running more inside zone, and they’ve increased the tempo from snap to snap. That second adjustment really tore the Seahawks’ defense apart on Sunday night, as McVay’s team beat their NFC West foe, 28-12, in a game that preserved possible postseason relevance for a squad that looked out of it a few weeks back — especially after a 45-6 beatdown at the hands of the Ravens in Week 12. In this game, the Rams had 15 first downs by halftime, and Seattle head coach Pete Carroll admitted after the fact that his defense had trouble calling plays and getting set at McVay’s breakneck tempo. The Rams have the Cowboys’ sieve-like defense up next, and then a real test when they head to San Francisco in Week 16. But for now, it appears that McVay has figured out a few things about his offense that will work beyond his base formations and concepts for the first time since late last season. There’s no better time than now for that to happen.

The Rams have found a groove on offense and the defense has continued to play well since adding Jalen Ramsey. It’s a roster that’s talented enough to beat anyone in the NFL, even if the Rams do only have two wins against teams above .500.

They have two real tests up next against the Cowboys in Dallas and the 49ers on the road before closing out the season at home against the Cardinals. They likely need to win two of the three in order to make the playoffs, otherwise they’ll be watching the postseason from home.

Panthers fall 5 more spots in Week 15 power rankings

Following another humiliating loss to the Falcons (40-20) on Sunday, Doug Farrar has dropped Carolina five more spots.

The Panthers peaked in our Touchdown Wire power rankings not too long ago, reaching the No. 7 spot and threatening to move up into the elite tier of teams. A five-game losing streak has officially eliminated them from the playoff picture and made it clear they were never a contender to begin with.

Following another humiliating loss to the Falcons (40-20) on Sunday, Doug Farrar has dropped Carolina five more spots. The Panthers head into Week 15 at No. 23 in the rankings.

“. . . Nor was Allen’s day — he completed 28 of 41 passes for 293 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against an Atlanta defense that has been highly vulnerable through most of the season. The Panthers are due for a major offseason blow-up to rebuild, and this game made that very clear.”

If you’re looking for a silver lining, the Panthers have improved their position in the 2020 NFL draft. This latest loss has them in line to pick at No. 12 overall.

As for what they’ll do with that first-round pick – wherever it falls – it’s anybody’s guess. This current roster has more holes than a cheese grater. We also don’t know if Cam Newton will be back next year nor who will be coaching the team. The defense needs a serious infusion of young talent and the offensive line remains a mess.

NFL.com Week 14 Power Rankings: Bears rise to No. 17

Coming off a 24-20 comeback win vs. Lions on Thanksgiving, the Bears rose in the power rankings heading into Week 14.

The Chicago Bears (6-6) are riding a two-game winning streak heading into a pivotal matchup against the Dallas Cowboys (6-6) on Thursday.

Following a 24-20 comeback win over the Detroit Lions (3-8-1) on Thanksgiving, Chicago suddenly finds itself fighting for the chance at a Wild Card berth. They also find themselves rising in the power rankings.

The Bears rose four spots to No. 17 in NFL.com’s Week 14 Power Rankings, which was the biggest jump of the week for an NFL team.

“A lot of players made a lot of plays, but today was Mitch’s day.” Those were the words of Bears coach Matt Nagy, after Mitchell Trubisky threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns to beat the Lions on Thanksgiving. It was easily Trubisky’s best game of the season, and it creates an air of optimism around the much-maligned former first-round pick as the season hits its home stretch.

Can Trubisky put himself in position to keep his starting job next season with a strong finish? His play has improved markedly in the past two weeks, but Chicago has been arguably the league’s most disappointing team, and Trubisky’s regression has been a big reason why. The Bears finish with a murderer’s row of opponents — Cowboys, at Packers, Chiefs, at Vikings — giving Trubisky both an epic challenge and a golden opportunity to salvage his season.

Trubisky has strung together four solid games, and the Bears will need more of the same from him heading into this final stretch. A stretch that is the NFL’s toughest strength of schedule in the final four games.

If the Bears win out — a big if — they’ll have a shot at the playoffs. If not, then they’ll have plenty of time to make some important decisions for 2020.

Broncos jump four spots in NFL power rankings after Week 13 win

After beating the Chargers in Week 13, the Broncos jumped up four spots in NFL power rankings entering Week 14.

After defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 23-20 in Week 13, the Denver Broncos jumped four spots in Nate Davis’ weekly NFL power rankings for USA TODAY Sports. Denver is now ranked 23rd out of 32 teams. The Broncos are still considered one of the 10 worst teams in the league — at least in the eyes of Davis — but it could be worse.

Here is Davis’ commentary with the Broncos’ ranking:

Nice debut, kid. Now all Drew Lock must do is roll into Houston, then Kansas City, trying to prove John Elway need not draft another quarterback.

Lock completed 64.3 percent of his passes on Sunday for 134 yards with two touchdown passes and one interception. He will start again against the Houston Texans in Week 14.

Denver is the third-ranked team in the AFC West, above the Chargers (No. 24) and below the Oakland Raiders (No. 22) and Kansas City Chiefs (No. 8). The Baltimore Ravens are ranked No. 1 and the New York Giants are ranked No. 32. To view the complete NFL power rankings, click here.

49ers fall behind Seahawks, Saints in NFL Wire power rankings

The 49ers’ spot in the NFL Wire power rankings is indicative of their spot in the hunt for a first-round bye.

The 49ers’ loss to the Ravens seemed to cement their status as a bona fide Super Bowl contender. They took the AFC’s top-seeded team to the final seconds, and made them kick a 49-yard field goal in the closing seconds to earn a 20-17 victory. A strong showing against the NFL Wire’s No. 1-ranked team wasn’t enough to keep the 49ers at the No. 2 spot. Instead, they tumbled back two spots to No. 4, behind the Saints and Seahawks.

It would’ve made sense for San Francisco to stay in second since they were a play or two away from knocking off the Ravens and jumping to the No. 1 spot they once occupied.

Instead, they’ll have to battle their way back to the top over two teams they face in the final four games. San Francisco is in New Orleans in Week 14, then they’re in Seattle for the final week of the season. Last week we wrote about how the NFL Wire power rankings were going to reflect the 49ers’ chase for a playoff spot. That’s even more true following their loss to the Ravens.

If San Francisco is going to get back to the top spot by the end of the year, it’s going to require taking down New Orleans and Seattle. Any slip up over the final few weeks for the 49ers probably pushes them permanently into a Wild Card spot, forcing them to go on the road for at least two, and more than likely three playoff games if they’re going to make it to Super Bowl LIV. No team has gotten to the Super Bowl without a first-round bye since the Ravens in the 2012 season.

Power rankings don’t play a role in the playoff standings, but in the 49ers’ instance, they’re extremely indicative of where the team is in the NFL hierarchy with four weeks to go. The good news is, they have a chance to prove they should’ve been in the top two all along, and they’re four wins from doing so and resting the first week of the postseason.

Power rankings: Bills inch closer to top-5

Buffalo Bills power rankings in NFL heading into Week 14.

The Bills earned a win in front of everyone, a nationally televised ‘W’ over the Dallas Cowboys, in Week 13.

Heading into Week 14 and a meeting with the Baltimore Ravens, the Bills are on the doorstep of top-five status across national power rankings polls.

With that, here’s how the Bills fared in various power ranking polls across national meeting outlets this week:

USA Today

9. Bills (12)

Could they actually win AFC East for first time since 1995? Buffalo must go through Ravens and Steelers before next shot at Patriots.

Touchdown Wire

7. Buffalo Bills

(9-3. Last week: 9)

It is now officially time to stop ignoring the Bills as the products of an easy schedule — when you have a 9-3 record, you have done enough right to be taken seriously. Yes, Buffalo had by far the NFL’s worst slate of opponents coming into their Thanksgiving matchup in Dallas, but going out of Big D with a 26-15 win that was far more dominant than the score might indicate? That was the very definition of a statement win.

Josh Allen completed 79% of his passes for 231 yards and a touchdown. John Brown, perhaps the NFL’s most underrated receiver, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to running back Devin Singletary. Allen added 43 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. And a defense that has flown under the radar most of the season sacked Dak Prescott four times, limited him to two touchdown passes on 49 attempts, and racked up nine passes defended and three forced fumbles.

Now, it comes time for Buffalo to prove it on a different level — with games against the Ravens, Steelers, Patriots and Jets in the next four weeks, Sean McDermott’s team faces the toughest remaining slate. That’s skewed to a large degree by the Ravens and Patriots, but the point still stands. There’s a lot more to prove here, but this is a team capable of proving it.

NFL.com

10. Bills (9-3)

Previous rank: No. 10

We see you, Bills. We all see you now. Sean McDermott’s squad went to Dallas and laid a Thanksgiving whooping on the supposedly superior Cowboys, putting themselves on the map as a legitimate contender in the AFC. At 9-3, the Bills have a stranglehold on a wild-card spot and remain within striking distance of the hardly invincible Patriots in the AFC East. There were standout performances up and down the roster against the Cowboys, but this game could be a flashpoint for Josh Allen, who played like a franchise quarterback in front of a huge national audience. Allen led six consecutive scoring drives against Dallas and dished out some punishment on a third-quarter touchdown run that might be the highlight of his young career to date. Now the Bills get extra time to prepare for their biggest challenge of the season: a home game against the surging Ravens. Dismiss the Bills at your own risk.

Sports Illustrated

9. Buffalo Bills (9-3)

There you go, Bills! That’s a Thanksgiving day win with some substance behind it, as the Buffalo D kept Dak and a potent Cowboys attack off the scoreboard from the 10:39 mark of the first quarter until 4:06 in the fourth. Josh Allen has played quite well since the Week 4 stinker, going 19-of-24 for 231 yards a TD and a 120.7 rating to boot on Sunday while the Cole Beasley revenge game took effect to the tune of six catches, 110 yards and a touchdown.

ESPN

10. Buffalo Bills (9-3)
Week 13 ranking: 10

Who’s under fire: Stephen Hauschka, K

The Bills are rolling, but Hauschka has struggled this season, connecting on a career-low 71% of his field goals. After he missed two field goals in a three-point loss to the Browns in Week 10 and a field goal and an extra point last week, Hauschka’s margin for error is rapidly shrinking.

Yahoo! Sports

8. Buffalo Bills (9-3, LW: 9)

Josh Allen looked really good carving up the Cowboys. In eight games since a disastrous start against New England, Allen has 1,688 yards, 13 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 98.7 passer rating. And he’s dangerous with his legs. I’m not sure the Texans or Chiefs want to see the Bills on wild-card weekend.

NBC Sports

9. Bills (9-3; No. 10)

Yes, No. 9 may be too low; beat the Ravens and Buffalo will crash the top five.

Bleacher Report

10. Buffalo Bills (9-3)

High: 10
Low: 10
Last Week: 11
Week 13 Result: Won at Dallas 26-15

For most of this season, many folks have been sleeping on the Bills. Despite the third-best record in the AFC, there wasn’t much talk of the Bills as a legitimate force in the conference.

That may be about to change after the Bills hammered the Cowboys in Dallas on Thanksgiving—in front of the largest television audience for any program since Super Bowl LIII.

After putting on a showcase in his first nationally televised appearance, Bills quarterback Josh Allen downplayed the significance of the win while speaking with reporters.

“Just No. 9,” Allen told reporters, referring to the Bills’ win total this season.

However, Davenport thinks this was more than just another win.

“The thoroughness and ease with which Buffalo dismantled the Cowboys was an eye-opener,” he said. “The Bills are stout defensively and can run the ball, and Allen is playing light-years better than his rookie season. I don’t know that the Bills will beat Baltimore next week. Or that they can go into Foxborough and slay their archenemies. But assuming that the Bills wind up the AFC’s No. 5 seed, there isn’t a team in the conference that wants any part of being No. 4.”

Gagnon, on the other hand, is still a tad skeptical…but coming around.

“I’m not ready to declare the Bills a contender because Dallas was overrated to begin with,” he said. “Still, it’s a heck of a good sign that the stout defense is now starting to make splash plays, and the sky is the limit for Josh Allen. It’s important to keep in mind that the offense underwent major changes in the offseason. Are they finally starting to click?”

Sporting News

10. Buffalo Bills, 9-3 (10)

The Bills got their signature win with their dominance of the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Josh Allen keeps improving with his revamped weapons, and the defense is making it difficult on opponents with its toughness and aggressiveness. They get their shot to take it up a few notches in the AFC against the Ravens in Week 14.

CBS Sports

8. Bills (9-3)

It’s time to believe in this team. Josh Allen has really elevated his game. Now comes a big one with the Ravens.

Buccaneers crack top 20 in latest USA TODAY Power Rankings

After a convincing win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13, the Buccaneers have jumped six spots in the latest power rankings.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hitting their stride (finally), having won their last two games, both on the road. It’s the Bucs’ first winning-streak of the season, and, at 5-7, they have a chance to avoid their third-straight 5-11 season with four games left to play.

Tampa Bay’ victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13 was the Devin White coming out party, as the prized rookie out of LSU made franchise history with his big first quarter.

With the team playing solid on both sides of the ball right now, it’s no surprise to see them crack the top 20 in USA TODAY’s latest NFL Power Rankings.

Tampa Bay jumped six spots from 23 to 17, with the stellar play of White as a big reason.

“Tough year for defense but nice to see rookie Devin White assert himself with monster game (TD, INT, fumble recovery) at Jacksonville.”

The Bucs will look to make it three-straight Sunday when they host the 6-6 Indianapolis Colts.

Saints rise in latest NFL power rankings, but still trail the best in the NFC West

The New Orleans Saints surpassed the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots in the latest NFL power rankings, but they aren’t on top.

[jwplayer Heou98K8]

The New Orleans Saints demolished the Atlanta Falcons without putting up gaudy numbers on offense, instead relying on their defense to make life hard for Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and his supporting cast on Thanksgiving. That victory was a prelude for other big wins around the NFL, ranging from the Baltimore Ravens’ takedown of the San Francisco 49ers to the Houston Texans’ shocking win over the New England Patriots. A final shakeup to the standings came from the Seattle Seahawks’ homestand against the Minnesota Vikings.

According to the latest NFL power rankings from Doug Farrar over at Touchdown Wire, those performances were substantial enough to life the Saints to the No. 3 spot. Here’s some of what he wrote to justify that jump up from No. 5:

It says a lot for a team’s balance when it can beat the daylights out of an opponent without any of its biggest offensive names putting up huge performances. That was the case for the Saints in their 26-18 win over the Falcons. Drew Brees completed just 18 of 30 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. Alvin Kamara gained 61 yards on 11 carries. Michael Thomas caught six passes for just 48 yards.

None of that mattered, though, because New Orleans’ defense went nuts on Matt Ryan, sacking him nine times, hitting him 13 more times, and making his day even worse with this extremely ill-advised tackle attempt and against defensive lineman Shy Tuttle.

Backup quarterback/Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill blocked a punt, ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. Cameron Jordan had four sacks, and edge bookend Marcus Davenport had two of his own.

The Saints earned their third straight NFC South title with this win, and they’re right to want more. When you have depth and breadth along the roster like this, you are going to be a very tough out in the postseason.

The Saints still trail two other teams for the top spot, including the red-hot Ravens (at No. 1) and the upstart Seahawks (at No. 2), despite New Orleans’ dismantling of Seattle earlier this season. The Seahawks’ serenity-in-chaos style of play has worked well for them this year, especially on the biggest stages in prime-time, but for now they trail the Saints in the only ranking that really matters: playoff positioning. If the playoffs started today, the road to Super Bowl LIV would run through New Orleans, with the Seahawks in second-place.

Seahawks jump to No. 2 in Touchdown Wire’s Week 14 power rankings

The Seattle Seahawks advanced to the NFC West division leaders and the No. 2 seed in the NFC after beating the Vikings Week 13 Monday night.

The Seattle Seahawks advanced to become the NFC West division leaders and the No. 2 seed in the NFC after beating the Minnesota Vikings Week 13 on Monday night.

For their efforts, they have also jumped all the way up to No. 2 in Touchdown Wire’s NFL power rankings entering Week 14.

“The Seahawks came into Monday Night Football against the Vikings with a 5-0 record in games decided by four points or less, and an average margin of victory of 5.4 in their nine wins,” writes Doug Farrar. “And given the fact that Seattle and Minnesota are about as similarly designed as two NFL teams can be, you knew this was going to be a tight one. Things went a bit off the rails with this bizarre pick-six for safety Anthony Harris off a Russell Wilson deflection.”

“But the Seahawks were able to swing back from that 14-7 deficit with the dual rushing attack of Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny, and Wilson’s own ability to exploit Minnesota’s vulnerable outside cornerbacks, especially Xavier Rhodes, in a 37-30 win,” Farrar continues. “Wilson didn’t advance his own MVP argument against Lamar Jackson (who may have the thing wrapped up at this point), but he did take back the lead in touchdown passes on the season from Jackson with his two on the night. Perhaps the most important thing for Pete Carroll’s team as they look to make a dent in the playoffs is a secondary that, aside from the occasional busted play, has shown a great deal of improvement in the second half of the season.”

The Seahawks continue their hunt to remain at the top of the NFC West with a contest against the division-rival Rams next Sunday on the road.

NFL Week 14 power rankings: Rams make big jump after 34-7 win

The Rams moved up 6 spots after their win over the Cardinals.

The month of November was a struggle for the Los Angeles Rams, going 1-2 with a stretch of unimpressive play on offense. They appear to have broken out of their slump after crushing the Cardinals 34-7 on the road, staying alive in the race to the postseason.

They were consistently ranked in the bottom-half of Doug Farrar’s power rankings at Touchdown Wire, but the Rams made a big jump forward with their lopsided win over the Cardinals. They moved up from No. 19 to 13, which was one of the biggest leaps in the league this week.

Here’s what Farrar wrote about how he views the Rams right now.

If Jared Goff could play consistently as he did against the Cardinals on Sunday, there wouldn’t be so much angst about his contract, his future, and how limited Sean McVay’s offense has become with him at the helm. But against Arizona’s leaky pass defense, Goff looked as good as he ever will, completing 32 of 43 passes for 424 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Todd Gurley also got back on track with 95 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. It may be too late for the Rams to do anything in a postseason sense, but for one Sunday, they managed to look like the team they envisioned in training camp.

Los Angeles simply hasn’t been able to put together many games where the offense and defense are both clicking. They’ve had trouble with consistently on offense, largely because of Jared Goff’s struggles.

Outside of two games against the Bucs and Ravens where the Rams allowed 100 total points, the Rams defense has been great this season. In the other 10 games, they allowed a total of 150 points.

They have four weeks to get on track and make a push for the postseason, but it might be too late for them to make any noise.
