Texans vs. Jaguars: Announcers set for Week 13 game

The folks over at FOX will be on the call Sunday afternoon as the Houston Texans take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Houston Texans (7-5) will hit the road and head south to battle the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-9) in Week 13 for what could have divisional hopes on the line.

The Texans are coming off perhaps the worst loss in the DeMeco Ryans’ era after the Tennessee Titans marched into NRG Stadium to secure a 32-27 victory. Will Levis’ breakout performance helped Tennessee end a two-game losing streak and give Houston its first divisional loss of 2024.

Sunday’s AFC South will be televised on FOX locally and in certain parts of the country. Kevin Kugler (play-by-play) and Daryl Johnston (analyst) will work the broadcast booth. Laura Okmin (sideline reporter) will conduct pregame interviews, halftime updates and postgame interviews as well.

The Texans have opened as a 5.5-point road favorite against the Jaguars in Week 13, according to BetMGM. The over/under is set at 43.

Jacksonville should be well-rested after entering Week 12’s bye. The bigger question is surrounding the status of Trevor Lawerence. The former No. 1 overall pick has missed the past two games with an upper-body injury, leading to former Patriots starter Mac Jones to take over as QB1.

In two games, Jones has completed 61.7% of his pass attempts for 277 yards and three interceptions.

The Texans must find a stable option at the nickel position if they plan on remaining an elite defense without Jalen Ptire. The third-year multi-purpose defensive back is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a torn pec during Sunday’s loss at home.

“He’s been a true impact player for us,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “Just being around the ball. Just causing interceptions, forcing fumbles, he’s just been really active, very instinctive player for us, he’s been all over the field. And he’s made a lot of plays for us. And just miss his instincts, miss his playmaking ability, we’re going to miss that.”

Kickoff from EverBank Stadium is scheduled for noon CT.

Jimmy Johnson was cut off making a point about the Cowboys by loud boos from the US Navy base

Even American military members are tired of hearing about the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys are 3-5. They haven’t won a game since early October. Starting quarterback Dak Prescott is likely out for the season, owner Jerry Jones is making rash trades, and head coach Mike McCarthy is probably leading his last days in Dallas over the next several weeks. Yet, for some reason, programs like NFL on Fox still want to champion them and talk about them so, so much.

Fortunately, it appears even United States military members — Fox hosted its NFL show from the US Navy base in San Diego on Sunday — are tired of hearing about these mediocre Cowboys.

As host Curt Menefee threw it to Jimmy Johnson for his thoughts on the Cowboys’ struggles, the United States Navy base erupted in raucous booing, as Johnson couldn’t initially even get his point across.

I have so much respect for this:

A note to all networks and media outlets. The Cowboys are terrible. They are irrelevant. There are many other things happening in the NFL. Just keep that in mind.

Announcers for Eagles-Browns matchup on Fox revealed

Jonathan Vilma & Kenny Albert to announce Eagles vs. Browns in Week 6

The Eagles are back from their bye and have started preparation for an intriguing Week 6 game against the Cleveland Browns.

It’s not the game of the week, but it still has a solid announcing team for the early game on Fox.  The game will be featured on Fox’s early afternoon lineup and features the team of Kenny Albert on play-by-play, Jonathan Vilma (analyst), and Megan Olivi (sideline) from Lincoln Financial Field at 1:00 PM EST on Sunday.

Cleveland is 1-4 and will enter the game with one of the league’s most inept and inefficient offensive units. The Browns offense has yet to score over 20 points in a game this season. Only the Dolphins and Patriots have scored fewer points per game than the Browns entering Week 6.

Jimmy Johnson blasted Panthers owner David Tepper for micromanaging and ruining his team

Jimmy Johnson really let Panthers owner David Tepper have it.

The benching of Bryce Young earlier this week has sparked another frank discussion about the direction of the moribund Carolina Panthers. Namely, they’re going nowhere, as a lot of people blame Panthers owner David Tepper for forcing the organization to take the young quarterback instead of simply trusting his football operations.

You can count Jimmy Johnson among them.

In a rant about the state of the Panthers, Johnson took Tepper to task for meddling too much as an overly involved owner. He blasted Tepper for not trusting and listening to the people he hired to do their jobs. Honestly, Johnson makes a terrific, evergreen point about how most sports owners should probably operate with their teams.

Sign the checks, and just let people do their jobs!

The Panthers are beyond dysfunctional, and there doesn’t seem to be much hope on the horizon. If Tepper continues to meddle, it’s hard to see them turning this around. So, he should probably take Johnson’s advice.

Baker Mayfield wins NFL on FOX fan vote for Comeback Player of the Year

After a tremendous season, Baker Mayfield won NFL on FOX Comeback Player of the Year fan voting.

It was a tremendous season for former Oklahoma and Heisman-winning quarterback [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag].

After being traded away by the Cleveland Browns in favor of DeShaun Watson and spending time with both the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams, Mayfield found a home with Tampa Bay last offseason.

But nothing was handed to him. He went into Buccaneers training camp and competed with former Florida quarterback Kyle Trask for the starting role. After winning the camp battle, Mayfield had a career year and helped the Bucs reach the divisional round of the playoffs after a win over Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Though he didn’t take home the AP Comeback Player of the Year Award, he was one of the more remarkable comeback stories. That led to Mayfield being chosen as the FOX on NFL Comeback Player of the Year as voted on by the fans.

In 2023, Mayfield threw for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in helping Tampa Bay win the NFC South and make the playoffs. While his future was in question entering the 2023 season, it’s likely he’s earned a long-term contract with Tampa Bay this offseason to be their starting quarterback. He capped off his tremendous season winning the Pro Bowl accuracy competition and game MVP in the NFC’s win.

This selection is just another feather in the cap of Mayfield’s career, who’s always shown the ability to bounceback from adversity. Though his career in Cleveland may have been rocky, he found a way to keep grinding and make the most of his opportunity this season with Tampa Bay.
