Bucs QB Baker Mayfield named finalist for NFL Comeback Player of the Year

Mayfield is one of five nominees for the award, the winner of which will be revealed on Feb. 8 at the NFL Honors.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] had a great bounce-back season in 2023, and the Associated Press has taken notice.

The AP handles all yearly awards for the NFL, and one of those is Comeback Player of the Year — an award Mayfield has officially been nominated for. He’s one of five nominees, competing against the Cleveland Browns’ Joe Flacco, the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin, the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa and the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford.

There isn’t a set qualifier for Comeback Player of the Year. Three of these players in Hamlin, Tagovailoa and Stafford’s case is injury, with Hamlin in particular returning to the NFL after suffering a cardiac arrest on the field in 2022. Flacco and Mayfield were not injured last year, but returned to form after previously poor play.

Regardless of the criteria, Mayfield’s season deserves to be recognized. He threw 28 touchdowns and 10 picks on 4,044 yards with a 64.3 completion percentage. The award comes after he spent 2022 on three different rosters, going from the Cleveland Browns to the Carolina Panthers and then finishing the end of the season with the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s hard to tell if he’ll win the award, given how abstract the criteria is, but we’ll know for sure when the NFL Honors takes place on Feb. 8.

Browns QB Joe Flacco should win NFL Comeback Player of the Year

Flacco has been playing great for the Browns

When the Cleveland Browns signed veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, no one expected the move would result in such great play. Flacco is not only playing great football he is playing the best football he has ever played in his entire career. In the win over the New York Jets, Flacco threw for over 300 yards in his fourth straight game something he had never done in three straight games let alone four.

The interceptions at times have been issues but because of all the big plays, they haven’t been issues they couldn’t overcome. He makes more than a couple of plays that make you just go wow each week. He has shown that he still has incredible arm talent and he can still throw a beautiful deep ball.

He is accomplishing all of this after not being on a team’s roster at all until the Browns signed him on November 20th. He was staying in shape throwing passes around with his younger brother just in case someone finally called him.

He came to town and before you knew it he was on the field carving up defenses as he was likely still learning the playbook. There are not many people playing the position better than Flacco who is playing behind a banged-up offensive line.

The story of Flacco walking into town and saving the Browns’ season and championship dreams doesn’t seem believable if we weren’t seeing it with our own eyes. To me, his impact on the field cannot be beaten in terms of who should be the comeback player of the year.

Texans DE J.J. Watt says Alex Smith has been ‘unbelievable’ in 2020

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt endorsed Washington quarterback Alex Smith as the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year on Twitter.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has been along for the ride with Washington quarterback Alex Smith’s odyssey back being a starter in the NFL.

After all, Watt was the defender who produced the fateful sack on Nov. 18, 2020, that broke Smith’s leg and kept him out football for the next year and a half.

Watt was tuned in to Monday afternoon football to see his brothers, Derek and T.J. Watt, help the Pittsburgh Steelers extend their undefeated streak. The Steelers were unsuccessful, as Washington prevailed 23-17 at Heinz Field.

“What Alex Smith has done is unbelievable,” Watt wrote on Twitter. “Comeback Player of the Year even before taking a snap. But playing winning football after everything he’s been through is even more incredible.”

Smith completed 31 passes on 46 attempts for 296 yards and a touchdown as Washington improves to 5-7, taking second place in a pathetic but competitive NFC East.

Texans DE J.J. Watt has 3rd best odds to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year

Odds-makers like Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt’s chances of winning the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

2020 may be the year that Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt wins another league-wide award.

According to BetMGM, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year has the third-best odds to take home the NFL Comeback Player of the Year with 6 to 1 odds. Only Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski have better odds at 4 to 1 each.

In 2018, Watt seemed to be in the running for his fourth NFL Defensive Player of the Year award when Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald blew the doors off the whole competition with his 20.5 sacks, 25 tackles for loss, 41 quarterback hits, and four forced fumbles. Donald was a force that no one was going to stop, not even Watt in the DPOY voting.

The next award Watt would have been eligible for, comeback player of the year, was also dominated by another player. Like so many times in the AFC South, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was snatching victory away Watt, as his 39 touchdowns, second in the NFL, helped the Colts signal caller take home the comeback award.

Watt missed eight games in 2019 with a torn pectoral muscle sustained in Week 8. The Texans put the defensive end on injured reserve, but he returned in time for the AFC wild-card against the Buffalo Bills at NRG Stadium. Watt had a sack in the 22-19 overtime win.

The last NFL award Watt secured was the 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year honor for his efforts in raising money for relief efforts in Houston and south Texas following the devastation from Hurricane Harvey. Though it was a momentous and emotional to win that award at that time, certainly the former 2011 first-round pick would love to collect another on-field award.

Baker Mayfield, Myles Garrett with value odds to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year

Baker Mayfield, Myles Garrett with value odds to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year

Don’t call it a comeback…

Two prominent Cleveland Browns players are among the top NFL athletes in the odds to win the league’s Comeback Player of the Year award. They will be there with very different paths to requiring a “comeback”.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is tied for 10th in the odds at BetMGM to win the award. He is hoping to bounce back from a second season that wasn’t nearly as effective, efficient or exciting as his record-setting rookie campaign.

Myles Garrett sits a little farther down the rankings in a tier with Jared Goff, Stefon Diggs and Nick Foles. Garrett played quite well in 2019 but had his season cut short due to a league-mandated suspension for clubbing Steelers QB Mason Rudolph over the head with his own helmet.
