Dolphins’ Ryan Fitzpatrick continues rise through QB power rankings

Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has reached a season high in NFL.com’s QB power rankings.

Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to make the most of a “nothing to lose” situation in Miami. Fitzpatrick logged a career high in passing yards in Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals, torching the NFL’s worst team to the tune of 419 passing yards. Fitzpatrick’s big day put him over 3,000 passing yards for the year and has Miami scoring points at a blistering pace (relative to the first month of the season, of course).

And folks have taken notice. Each week, NFL.com releases a weekly quarterback power ranking of all 32 starters in the NFL and Fitzpatrick has not only climbed out of the cellar, he’s on the cusp of being ranked in the top half of the league — Fitzpatrick has made it all the way to the 17th ranked quarterback in the NFL, one spot behind Buffalo’s Josh Allen.

Here’s what NFL.com’s Genarro Felice had to say about Fitzpatrick’s play:

“Quite apropos for this particular signal-caller to reach his highest QB Index ranking of the season in a week that’s headlined by a bearded geezer who spreads joy. In 2019, Fitzpatrick has indeed become Football Santa: a lovable figure whose production completely defies logic. But don’t you dare say Fitzmagic isn’t real! The guy’s operating behind the worst offensive line in football. He is flanked by a ground game that ranks dead last in rushing yards, throwing to a receiving corps that leads the AFC in drops. Fitzpatrick’s a 37-year-old journeyman on one of the youngest, cheapest rosters in the league, a team many thought could make a run at 0-16. And yet, he’s led the Dolphins to four wins in their past eight games. He ranks top 10 in ESPN’s QBR metric. And he can torch an opponent for 419 yards and four touchdowns, as he did in this past Sunday’s victory over the Bengals. I believe in Santa Fitz!” – Genarro Felice, NFL.com

There’s no question that Fitzpatrick is playing his best ball of the season here at the end of the line. For our money, he’s playing the best ball of his career here in Miami — a development that should have Miami willing to bringing back “Fitzmagic” again in 2020 to serve whatever role the Dolphins’ plans at quarterback allow for him to play.

As Fitzpatrick has established more and more rapport with Miami’s pass catchers, this seems like a no brainer decision that will only be further amplified if Fitzpatrick can find ways to move the ball against New England in Week 17.

NFL.com ‘Game Theory’ model forecasts chances of Dolphins win Week 16

The NFL.com’s ‘Game Theory’ model forecasts what Miami’s odds are of a win against the Bengals in Week 16.

The Miami Dolphins are entering Week 16 with a slew of possibilities ahead of them. Considering the team is going to be facing the New England Patriots in Foxboro next week, Miami is most likely looking at their final potential win of 2019 this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Depending on how well Miami plays, the Dolphins could take a win and impact their NFL Draft order positioning — not that anyone in the locker room cares in the here and now.

What are the odds Miami finishes the home schedule with a win? That depends on who you ask. If you were to ask NFL.com’s Cynthia Frelund, whose “Game Theory” provides predictive modeling provides score projections and win probabilities for every game in the NFL, the Dolphins are going to be in for a close contest against the Bengals.

“Game Theory” this week forecasts the Dolphins as favorites and lists them as owning a 52% chance of bringing home a win. The projected final score from Frelund’s model? 24-23, Dolphins. There are some interesting dynamics at play that keep this game close and, in the opinion of some, may actually give the Bengals the upper hand. The loss of LB Raekwon McMillan is an obvious one, as Bengals RB Joe Mixon has been one of the hottest running backs in football over the last two months. Him getting an opportunity to challenge Miami without McMillan is going to help the Bengals’ point totals surge.

So, too, is the Bengals’ reinsertion of Andy Dalton into the starting lineup. Dalton, for all his flaws, is an experienced quarterback who should be able to attack Miami’s barren secondary. Will it be enough for a win?

We’ll know soon enough. But expect a close call on Sunday against the lowly Bengals either way.

Dolphins’ Ryan Fitzpatrick moving up quarterback power rankings

NFL.com’s weekly quarterback power rankings sees Ryan Fitzpatrick checking at 22nd — a high this season.

The play of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has definitely been a surprise to everyone — despite playing behind a makeshift offensive line, the grizzled veteran has transitioned himself from a careless, free wielding gunslinger into the caretaker of Miami’s fragile passing attack — he’s protecting the football at one of the most impressive rates in his long-tenured NFL career and doing so despite little to no rushing offense to lean on and keep defense off balance.

Is Fitzpatrick a long-term answer for Miami? No, of course not. But he’s been better than advertised for Miami and is playing a lot of fun football while simultaneously energizing the Dolphins’ offense.

And folks have taken notice. Each week, NFL.com releases a weekly quarterback power ranking of all 32 starters in the NFL and Fitzpatrick has continued to steadily climb out of the cellar. At the beginning of the season, Fitzpatrick was regarded as the worst of the worst. But now? Miami’s quarterback situation is rated as better than 10 teams across the league — Fitzpatrick has climbed to a tie for 22nd on the power rankings list.

Here’s what NFL.com’s Ali Bhanpuri had to say about Fitzpatrick’s play:

“Fitzpatrick continues to impress despite starting alongside as many undrafted players on offense (4) as he does first-, second- and third-rounders. The 15th-year vet doesn’t care, though. He’s a tried-and-true gamer. Line up whoever you want next to him, he’s still going to aggressively take shots downfield and fearlessly barge through creases in the defense. His 65 rushing yards last Sunday were the most by any QB in Week 14 and increased his three-week total to 112, which ranks second among passers…other than a tight-window interception on an overly ambitious throw, Fitzpatrick put a number of quality plays on tape to warrant a rise up these rankings.” – Ali Bhanpuri, NFL.com

Indeed, Fitzpatrick’s sustained and stabilized play isn’t something that should be overlooked and his inspired play gives the Dolphins a blueprint for what they need to look for in their next franchise quarterback.

Ed Oliver named to NFL.com All-Rookie Team

NFL.com certainly got an early start on their 2019 All-Rookie Team. Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver doesn’t have a problem with that, though.

NFL.com certainly got an early start on their 2019 All-Rookie Team. With three games still left this season, Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver doesn’t have a problem with that, though.

Oliver was named to NFL.com’s list this week along the interior defensive line category. In addition to Oliver, the Giants’ Dexter Lawrence also earned honors from NFL.com at defensive tackle.

Here’s why Oliver was selected:

Oliver has been a man possessed since his midseason benching, recording four sacks in the last four games. A reeling Bills defense facing an identity crisis a month ago has surged back into second place in points per game (16.3) and third place in total yards per game (296.8).

Oliver certainly has earned his placement on the list as of late, as NFL.com states. Oliver was benched earlier this season for Jordan Phillips, who’s currently having a good season of his own. But that work ethic to earn his starting spot back with the Bills, along with his talents, is as much of a reason that the Bills wanted Oliver as anything else at the recent NFL draft.

Along with Oliver, Bills running back Devin Singletary has also had a productive rookie season, however, Raiders rusher Josh Jacobs took the running back honors. Jacobs has had more of a consistent seasons than Singletary, since Frank Gore was taking the early-season reps for the Bills, not Singletary.

Broncos QB Drew Lock nominated for Rookie of the Week award

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock has been nominated for NFL.com’s Rookie of the Week award after his big game in Week 14.

After leading the Broncos to a 38-24 win over the Texans in Week 14, quarterback Drew Lock has been nominated for the Rookie of the Week award on NFL.com.

Lock completed 81.5 percent of his passes in the win for 309 yards with three touchdown passes against one interception, good for a 136.0 passer rating. He is the first QB in the Super Bowl era to throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first start on the road.

Lock’s competition for the award is Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown (153 yards, two touchdowns), Steelers receiver/returner Diontae Johnson (145 combined yards, two touchdowns), Bills running back Devin Singletary (118 total yards) and Giants receiver Darius Slayton (154 yards, two touchdowns).

Fans have often shown a bias toward QBs in the voting this season — a QB has won seven of the last 13 awards — so Lock seems to have a good chance of taking home the award after his strong showing in Week 14.

Fans can vote for the award now through Thursday on NFL.com/Rookies.

Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick checks in at 26 on starting QB rankings

Remember a few months ago when the Dolphins’ QB situation was the worst in the NFL? That’s not the case anymore according to NFL.com.

The Dolphins’ quarterback situation has been a roller coaster of emotions going all the way back to last March when the team first signed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. There was joy that the Ryan Tannehill era was over, followed by the doubt of signing Fitzpatrick if the goal was to “tank”. And then there was the cautious optimism of trading for QB Josh Rosen, followed by the frustration of Miami’s handling of Rosen and the decision to start Fitzpatrick over him to open the season.

Fast forward a month from there and it was Rosen’s show and while things weren’t all that much better on the scoreboard, Rosen had some promising flashes and was declared the starter for the rest of the season. That declaration lasted less than three quarters and Fitzpatrick hasn’t looked back, since leading the Dolphins to two consecutive wins.

The most impressive twist to this story? Fitzpatrick has played pretty good — staying within himself, using his legs to extend plays and doing a great job of working around a balky offensive line to pick up third downs and extend drives. There isn’t the same reckless abandon to his game that NFL fans have been so accustomed to seeing. And it is getting noticed.

No one is going to confuse Ryan Fitzpatrick as a long-term answer for the Dolphins, Father Time will see to that. But getting quarterback play that’s not among the five or six worst situations in the NFL is great progress from where this team started the season in September. And that’s exactly where Fitzpatrick ranks among NFL starters according to an NFL.com panel: 26th in the league.

The “Fitzmagic” hasn’t had the peaks of recent years, but the outbursts and flurries of first downs have positioned the Dolphins to notch two straight wins — and the ranking is well deserved. Heck, Fitzpatrick probably deserves to be even higher on the list! You can make the case that he’s playing better than Daniel Jones and Jared Goff at this point in time, especially considering the supporting casts.

But for now, Dolphins fans can enjoy QB play that’s on the rise — and hope that trend continues next year with another fresh face in the room.

Dalvin Cook remains 2nd in RB rankings

Cook is on pace for 1,585 yards and 16 touchdowns to go with 64 catches for 678 receiving yards.

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts on Sunday night against the Cowboys.

In NFL.com’s Week 11 running back rankings, Cook remained second, behind only Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey.

Per Pro Football Focus, Cook grades as the league’s fifth-best running back with a grade of 85.3. Only Josh Jacobs, McCaffrey, Aaron Jones and Austin Ekeler rank ahead of him.

On the season, Cook has a league-leading 991 rushing yards to go with 10 rushing touchdowns. He also has 40 receptions for 424 yards.

He’s on pace for 1,585 yards and 16 touchdowns to go with 64 catches for 678 receiving yards.

Cook will have his next chance to have a big game on Sunday against the Broncos at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Broncos are allowing 107 rushing yards per game, a mark that ranks 17th in the league.

Kirk Cousins moves up 3 spots in Week 11 QB rankings

Cousins is now 15-10-1 in 26 games with the Vikings.

After throwing for 220 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday night’s 28-24 win over the Cowboys, Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins moved from 14th to 11th in NFL.com’s QB rankings.

The Vikings improved to 7-3 with the win and Cousins is now 15-10-1 in 26 games with the Vikings.

Here’s a snippet of what was written about Cousins:

Cousins made some big throws when the Vikings needed it on Sunday night, snapping his streak of losses in prime-time games against teams that entered the contest with a winning record at six. He enters this weekend’s tilt with the Broncos having thrown 142 consecutive passes without an INT (longest active streak), and his 124.4 passer rating since Week 5 is the NFL’s best in that span.

On the season, Cousins has thrown for 2,437 yards, 18 touchdowns and three interceptions. That puts him on pace for 3,899 yards, 28 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

Per Pro Football Focus, Cousins grades as the league’s ninth-best quarterback with a score of 82.7.

To round out the NFC North, Aaron Rodgers ranks fifth, Matthew Stafford ranks sixth and Mitchell Trubisky ranks 28th.

Where do Chargers stand in NFL power rankings after Week 10?

After suffering defeat in Week 10, Chargers Wire takes a look how the Bolts stack up in power rankings heading into Week 11.

In one that they needed badly, the Chargers were unable to deliver after suffering defeat to the Raiders on the national stage. The loss dropped Los Angeles to 4-6, but their playoff hopes are still alive.

Let’s see where the Bolts are viewed in power rankings.

USA Today: 19 (Previous: 19)

“Key injuries … Philip Rivers trying to do too much … off-field distractions … we’ve definitely entered “same-old Chargers” territory.”

Touchdown Wire: 22 (Previous: 22)

“Last Thursday night, Oakland rookie Josh Jacobs’ 18-yard touchdown run with 1:02 left in the game gave the Raiders a 26-24 lead over the Chargers. The Raiders then kicked off to the Chargers, who gave the ball to Philip Rivers in the hope that he could engineer a crucial win. What resulted was probably the worst drive of Rivers’ career. The veteran shot-putted the ball all over the field, and only one of his seven passes didn’t fall incomplete — his last pass of the night, which was caught by Oakland safety Karl Joseph.”

NFL: 18 (Previous: 18)

“Philip Rivers is currently on the dark web searching for mind-eraser technology to wipe away a lost Thursday night in Oakland. The Chargers quarterback threw three interceptions and had two more picks nullified by penalty in a 26-24 loss to the Raiders that put Los Angeles’ playoff hopes in serious doubt. Rivers was under constant duress due to a surprisingly meddlesome Oakland front seven, which had its way with an L.A. offensive line missing both starting tackles. The low point for the Chargers came on a final possession that went like this: incompletion, incompletion, incompletion, penalty (first down), incompletion, incompletion, incompletion, interception. Like I said, Philip Rivers is scouring the digital underground in search of mind-eraser hardware. Next up for the Chargers? A showdown against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Mexico City. It’s a virtual must-win for the Bolts.”

ESPN: 19 (Previous: 19)

“At 4-6, the most important game for the Chargers is the next one, a Monday Night Football tilt against the AFC West rival Chiefs. With Kansas City losing over the weekend against the Titans, the Chargers still sit two games back in the division with six left to play. So even though it has been up-and-down year for the Bolts, they could catapult themselves back into the playoff conversation with a win over the Chiefs.”

Sports Illustrated: 19 (Previous: 18)

“Tough one to drop in primetime for a team that had a chance to take more steps away from the brink. The Chargers go as Phillip Rivers goes, and three interceptions were too much to overcome despite Melvin Gordon’s best game of the season (133 total yards, 1 TD).”

CBS Sports: 18 (Previous: 18)

“They can’t turn the ball over the way they did against the Raiders and expect to be a playoff team. That loss to the Raiders was a momentum killer.”
