Key dates for 2025 NFL season that could have big impact on 49ers

The NFL announced a handful of key dates that could be important for the 49ers next offseason.

The NFL on Thursday released a handful of key dates for the 2025 season. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero provided the dates which were distributed to teams in a memo issued by the league. A couple of the events are of particular interest to the 49ers.

First on the list is the franchise/transition tag window which is open Feb. 18 to Mar. 4, 2025.

Generally the tag window isn’t of much import to the 49ers. They’ve only tagged kicker Robbie Gould during the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch tenure. Instead they’ll let a player walk or get an extension done before it reaches the franchise tag stage.

That could change if they’re unable to get a long-term deal done with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Then they may have Aiyuk play out his rookie deal before putting the franchise tag on him for the 2025 season. He’s likely the only player due to hit free agency next year that the 49ers would want back on the one-year, fully-guaranteed franchise tag. Safety Talanoa Hufanga, cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and left guard Aaron Banks could also be in that mix though.

Next on the list of dates is the new league year, which officially opens Mar. 12, 2025. That would be the day free agents officially hit the open market, although the legal negotiating window will open a couple days before that which means soon-to-be free agents are allowed to negotiate with other clubs. Ideally the 49ers would have extensions done before the new league year opens, but this will be the deadline they’re operating under to get any of those deals done.

Finally, Pelissero noted the NFL draft will take place in Green Bay, Wisc. from April 24-26 of next year.

Of course, all of this is way down the road. The 49ers haven’t even reported to training camp yet so next offseason feels like forever away. However, given the import of some of the moves San Francisco will be making over the next couple seasons, those dates are should get circled on a calendar as the team prepares for a tough upcoming offseason.

NFL announces Seahawks offseason program and minicamp dates

The NFL has announced dates for the offseason programs and minicamps. The Seahawks opted not to appear in person for voluntary activities.

The National Football League has now announced the dates for the offseason activities following the 2021 NFL draft. The program is broken down into three phases per Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Phase One will take place from April 19-May 14, four weeks this year instead of two. Any activities must be limited to strength and conditioning, virtual meetings, and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two starts on May 17 and lasts just one week this offseason. The following is allowed per the NFL this year:

On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills, “perfect play” drills, drills and plays conducted with offensive players lining up across from offensive players and defensive players lining up across from defensive players, with each group permitted to align eleven or fewer players across from eleven or fewer players. Players on one side of the ball may execute a play, but players on the opposite side of the ball may not initiate contact with, or attempt to impede the progress of, players who are running the play. All such drills must be conducted at an acceptable walkthrough pace (i.e. Pro Bowl practice).

Phase Three will be conducted over four weeks, from May 24-June 18. The following activities are allowed in the final phase.

Beginning in Phase Three, clubs may conduct in-person meetings and classroom instruction subject to COVID-19 testing cadence, tracking, facility access and other protocols.  During Phase Three, teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Finally, each club is allowed to hold one mandatory minicamp for veteran players – which must occur during Phase Three of the offseason program – and one rookie minicamp, held over either the first or second weekend following the draft.

Here are the offseason program dates for the Seahawks:

Rookie Minicamp: May 14-16

OTA Workouts: May 24, May 26-27, June 1, June 3-4, June 7-10

Mandatory Minicamp: June 15-17

In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Seattle’s players have already announced they won’t be participating in in-person, voluntary activities.

Keeping an eye on Seahawks as 2020 NFL trade deadline looms

Keeping an eye on the Seattle Seahawks as the 2020 NFL trade deadline looms on November 3 at 1:00 p.m. PT. Track all the moves here.

November 3 marks Election Day around the nation and cutoff day for trades around the National Football League. The official 2020 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. PT.

Like voters throughout the country, many teams – including the Seahawks – executed trades over the last week or so, well ahead of last call.

On October 28, the Seahawks traded with the Bengals for defensive end Carlos Dunlap, sending offensive lineman B.J. Finney and a seventh-round pick to Cincinnati in exchange.

Seattle’s languishing pass rush is arguably the foremost problem with the NFL’s last-ranked defense, so John Schneider and Pete Carroll went bargain hunting,” notes the USA TODAY staff.

“Dunlap provides the Seahawks with an accomplished edge presence looking for a new chapter in his career after falling out of favor in Cincinnati, which seemed eager to move on from the veteran.”

Seattle is welcoming back a number of injured players in the near future and isn’t likely to make a splashy trade as the minutes count down. Never say never, though so . . .

You can keep up on all the trade rumors around the league with USA TODAY’s NFL trade deadline tracker found here.

Important dates for 49ers on NFL offseason calendar

The 49ers need a big offseason if they’re going to make a trip back to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers go into the 2020 offseason with history pulling against them a little bit. Losing a Super Bowl, then winning it the following year is next to impossible, and something that’s only happened three times in 54 iterations of the NFL’s championship game.

San Francisco should still be in a good spot to have success next season though if they put together a strong offseason.

Here are key dates to know through April as the 49ers look to retool and get back to the Super Bowl in February of 2021.

February 24 – March 2 | NFL combine

The 49ers don’t have a ton of picks at their disposal going into the draft, but their limited cap space may require them to lean on the draft to bolster their depth after free agency. Their first real chance to see prospects up close and meet with them will take place at the combine in Indianapolis.

March 10 | Deadline to use franchise or transition tags

Teams can officially use their franchise tag on Feb. 25, but the deadline comes a couple weeks later at 1:00 pm PST. San Francisco used their franchise tag a season ago on kicker Robbie Gould. This year they may wind up using to keep defensive lineman Arik Armstead in Santa Clara.

March 16 | Legal tampering period opens

Players set to be unrestricted free agents can begin negotiating with teams at 1:00 pm PST. They can’t sign any deals and make anything official, but this is the period where contracts will start getting agreed upon. San Francisco has two key free agents – Armstead and Jimmie Ward – who they may want to lock up before letting them test the open market starting March 16.

March 18 | Free agency opens

The 18th of March is a big day for the NFL offseason. Free agency begins at 1:00 pm PST, and that’s when deals agreed upon starting March 16 can be signed and made official.

That’s also the deadline for teams to exercise options for the 2020 season on players with club options on their deals. Teams must also submit qualifying offers for their restricted free agents. Among San Francisco’s restricted free agents are QB Nick Mullens, WR Kendrick Bourne, RB Matt Breida and LB Elijah Lee.

All 2019 player contracts expire at 1:00 pm PST.

April 20 | Offseason programs may begin

Since the 49ers did not hire a new coach in the offseason, their first day of offseason workouts can start any time after April 20.

April 23-25 | NFL draft

San Francisco currently holds just one pick in the first two days of the draft, but that could change by the time they’re on the clock with the No. 31 overall pick.

April 27 | XFL players eligible

Once the XFL season is over, teams can request permission to visit with or sign any player who was under contract with that league.

Important NFL dates for February 2020

However, there are still a few important NFL dates to remember for this month. Here’s a look at the schedule for February, per NFL Communications.
