NFL announces 2021 preseason schedule

The NFL has announced its full 2021 preseason schedule.

One indication that the nation — and the NFL — is returning to some sense of normalcy is that there will be a preseason in 2021. The 2020 preseason was cancelled due to COVID, and the 2021 preseason will be different in that there are just three games — part of the agreement between the league and the NFLPA when the decision was made to expand the regular season to 17 games.

So, that’s one less week for the guys on the bottom of the depth charts to prove themselves before the regular season starts, which should add a new sense of urgency to the proceedings.

From the Hall of Fame game to the end of Week 3, here’s the complete schedule for the 2021 preseason.

2021 Houston Texans schedule: Times and dates announced

The Houston Texans announced their full 2021 NFL schedule, which includes bouts with the AFC East, games with the NFC West, and AFC South showdowns.

The Houston Texans announced their full 2021 NFL schedule.

It was known earlier Wednesday that the Texans would host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 at NRG Stadium. It is the first time the Texans will open up at home since 2017, when they incidentally played the Jaguars.

However, the Texans and Jaguars will both be debuting new coaches as David Culley will see his first action on the sidelines going against Urban Meyer. Both are rookie coaches, but had different routes to getting the top jobs for their respective clubs.

As the Texans work through their roster challenges, including who will be the starting quarterback, Houston takes on the rest of the AFC South, the AFC East, the NFC West, their same-place finishers — Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns — and the new 17th game, which will be against the Carolina Panthers.

Here is a look at the entire Texans schedule.

The Week 18 game has a little bit of a twist to it:

“We’re just kind of getting started here,” general manager Nick Caserio said at the Texans’ charity golf classic on Monday. “Football season is just about to start. We’re excited about the opportunity in front of us and I think that’s the most important thing is just focus on today and just keep moving forward.”

All games will be broadcast on the radio in Houston on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] and across the Texans Radio Network.

NFL to release 2021 schedule in prime time on May 12

Soon, we’ll know when the Rams will play each of their 14 opponents next season.

The NFL announced on Wednesday that it will release the full 2021 schedule on May 12. The league will do so, of course, with a prime time show on NFL Network, as it does each year.

In addition to the 17 regular-season games, we’ll also find out the dates and times of the Rams’ three preseason games.

The regular season is scheduled to begin on Sept. 9 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely to open the year on Thursday night at home as the defending Super Bowl champions. The season will end on Jan. 9, 2022, which is the result of the NFL adding an extra regular-season game for each team.

As a reminder, here are the Rams’ 14 opponents for next season

Home:

  • 49ers
  • Seahawks
  • Cardinals
  • Buccaneers
  • Lions
  • Bears
  • Jaguars
  • Titans

Road:

  • 49ers
  • Seahawks
  • Cardinals
  • Giants
  • Packers
  • Vikings
  • Texans
  • Colts
  • Ravens

It won’t be an easy schedule, as evidenced by their opponents’ projected win totals. Five of the teams they’ll face have projected win totals of at least 10, based on the lines set by BetMGM. Their weakest opponents are the Texans, Lions and Jaguars.

Rams tied for 6th-highest projected win total in NFL for 2021

BetMGM has set the Rams’ projected win total for 2021 at 10 games. Will they go over or under that number?

Expectations are once again very high for the Los Angeles Rams entering the 2021 season after acquiring Matthew Stafford in the biggest trade of the offseason. They did suffer some losses in free agency, but they have a loaded offense, a top-ranked defense that features Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, and a coach who’s never had a losing season in Sean McVay.

Playing in Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium is a very real possibility, but before the Rams can do that, they have to make the playoffs. And in order to get into the postseason, they’ll likely have to win at least 10 of their 17 games.

It just so happens that’s the exact number of games BetMGM has set the Rams’ projected win total at for 2021. The sportsbook released win totals for every team and the Rams are tied with the Browns, Colts and 49ers for sixth-best in the league.

A bet on either the Over or Under comes with a line of -110, meaning you have to wager $110 to win $100.

  • Chiefs: 12
  • Bucs: 11.5
  • Packers: 11
  • Ravens: 11
  • Bills: 10.5
  • Browns: 10
  • Rams: 10
  • Colts: 10
  • 49ers: 10

The Seahawks are close behind with a projected win total of 9.5 games, while the Cardinals’ total sits at eight games. All four teams in the NFC West have a decent chance to make the playoffs, especially with the field expanded to seven teams from each conference.

According to BetMGM, the Rams’ odds to make the playoffs are -185 and +150 to miss them. That gives them an implied probability of 64.9% to make the postseason.
