NFC North watch: All 3 Lions divisional foes win in Week 5

NFC North watch: All 3 Lions divisional foes win in Week 5 while Detroit was on the bye week

Week 5 saw the Detroit Lions catch their bye week, a welcome break for the 3-1 team. Unfortunately for the Lions, their NFC North divisional foes all had positive outcomes for the weekend.

Minnesota kicked off the football Sunday in London by beating the New York Jets, 23-17. The Vikings offense struggled in this one, but Jets QB Aaron Rodgers threw three INTs, including one in the final minute to save the Vikings victory. Minnesota improves to 5-0, the NFC’s only unbeaten team after Week 5.

The Chicago Bears had a cakewalk game against the Carolina Panthers. The 36-10 final score makes the game appear closer than it was in reality; after an early Panthers touchdown run, Chicago absolutely dominated all phases of the game. The Bears improve to 3-2 with the win.

Green Bay also improved to 3-2 with a hard-fought win over the upstart Rams in Los Angeles. The Packers held on, surviving a Matthew Stafford comeback effort and winning despite converting just one third down attempt all afternoon.

Up next

In Week 6, the Vikings are on a bye week. Chicago plays Jacksonville in England, while Green Bay hosts the Arizona Cardinals. Detroit plays in Dallas in the late-afternoon window next Sunday.

NFC North watch: Packers top target skips practices, unhappy with role

NFC North watch: Packers top target skips practices because he’s unhappy with his role and is doubtful to play in Week 5

While the Lions are off on a bye week, things around the NFC North division never sleep. That includes some brewing drama in Green Bay between the Packers and one of their most important offensive players.

Wide receiver Romeo Doubs is listed as doubtful for Green Bay’s game on Sunday, but he’s not injured. Several reports indicate Doubs skipped practices throughout the week in frustration with his role in the Packers offense.

That might seem odd, given Doubs’ critical role on the offense. From Packers Wire’s Zach Kruse,

Doubs leads all Packers wide receivers in snaps played (224) and is second in targets (22). He was targeted a season-high eight times during the Packers’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. In two games with Jordan Love at quarterback this season, Doubs received 15 targets — or 7.5 per game.

In two games against Detroit last year, Doubs hauled in 12 passes for 132 yards. Green Bay is playing the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5 and could also be without WR Christian Watson.

Update:

Week 4 NFC North roundup

A quick recap of the two games Sunday featuring NFC North teams.

There were some interesting moments in the NFC North while the Lions waited and had final preparations before Monday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. We saw a team nearly blow a 28-point lead and another knock off a team that’s been decimated by injuries. Let’s take a quick run through the two games in the division Sunday.

Vikings defeat Packers, 31-29

At one point, this game was 28-0 in favor of the Vikings. Then, whether it was turnovers or muffed punts, the Packers slowly clawed their way back. Ultimately, it came down to an onside kick and, just like many others before, this one did not work for the Packers and the Vikings avoided the major letdown to improve to 4-0 while the Packers fell to 2-2.

Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold went 20/28 for 275 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also added 15 yards on seven rushes and was sacked twice. Running back Aaron Jones, in his first game against his former team, totaled 139 yards (93 rushing) on 26 touches (22 carries). Wide receiver Justin Jefferson caught six passes for 85 yards and a touchdown while fellow receiver Jordan Addison — in his first game back from injury — had 72 yards on three catches with a touchdown.

For the Packers, quarterback Sam Darnold went 32/54 for 389 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Running back Josh Jacobs ran nine times for 51 yards. Jayden Reed led the way in receiving with 139 yards on seven catches and a touchdown. Dontayvion Wicks also had a strong day with 78 yards and two touchdowns on five catches.

The Vikings head to London this week to meet the New York Jets, while the Packers head out to Los Angeles to take on the Rams on Sunday.

Bears defeat Rams, 24-18

A back-and-forth battle that saw the Rams stall out and get away from the run at inopportune times helped the Bears gain momentum and hold off the Rams on a game-winning interception of Matthew Stafford to seal a 24-18 win at home. The Bears move to 2-2 while the Rams fell to 1-3 — and would be 0-4 if they didn’t have that comeback against the 49ers.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams completed 17 of 23 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown and was sacked three times. Running back D’Andre Swift had 93 rushing yards on 16 attempts, including a 36-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also led the Bears in receiving with 72 yards on seven catches. That’s 165 total yards on 23 touches.

Next week, the Bears face the team that helped land them Caleb Williams, the Carolina Panthers. Then it’s their turn to go to London in Week 6 when they face the Jaguars.

NFC North standings entering Monday

1. Minnesota Vikings 4-0
2. Detroit Lions 2-1
3. Green Bay Packers 2-2
4. Chicago Bears 2-2

Announcers set for Texans vs. Bears Week 2 game

Here’s who is on the call when the Houston Texans take on the Chicago Bears.

The Houston Texans (1-0) will face the Chicago Bears(1-0) on Sunday Night Football in Week 2, where Houston is looking to build an early win streak and pull off another prominent win over one of the league’s most improved rosters.

The Texans’ Week 2 game will air on NBC at 7:20 p.m. CT. The television commentators for the game are Mike Tirico (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst) and Melissa Stark (sideline reporter).

Houston is coming off a 29-27 win over the Indianapolis Colts (0-1), where newcomers Stefon Diggs and Joe Mixon set the tone in a new era of Texans football. Mixon, a 2021 Pro Bowler with the Cincinnati Bengals, rushed for 159 yards and a score. Diggs hauled in six passes from C.J. Stroud for 33 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Chicago is coming off a 24-17 comeback win over the Tennessee Titans (0-1), where defense and special teams rose to the occasion as rookie Caleb Williams and the offense struggled. After trailing 17-0, the Bears scored 24 unanswered points, notching three takeaways and scoring defensive and special teams touchdowns en route to the miraculous win.

Williams, the No. 1 overall pick of April’s draft, struggled to produce on offense completing 14 passes for 93 yards. As a unit, Chicago’s offense failed to total 150 yards on the afternoon.

Jordan Love left knee injury analysis and outlook

Breaking down the Packers QB Jordan Love left knee injury analysis and outlook

Our NFC North division rivals got a Brazil-sized scare on September 6, 2024 as Green Bay Packer’s Jordan Love went down late in the fourth quarter with a left leg injury.

On initial look, it appeared that Love suffered a routine left high ankle sprain and he still might have. Further slow motion replays showed a visible sudden pop in his left knee.

This pop was reminiscent of what we saw in the first week last year with Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles.

The next day, Ian Rapaport revealed that Love had “between a grade 1 and grade 2 MCL sprain” which translates to a partial tear. The most severe sprain is a grade 3 which is a complete tear.

As with all publicly released health reports, be aware that there is no obligation to release all the details of the injury or any corollary injuries. This means it is possible there are other injuries to the knee area or ankle that were not disclosed.

The early reports of a three to four week recovery fits a mild-moderate MCL sprain with no complications. Also, there appears to be no concern at this time for a significant ankle injury.

KNEE POP ANALYSIS

So does a partial MCL tear fully explain the knee pop? Possibly. But there could be something else going on as well.

Here are some possibilities that could cause a visible pop:

LIGAMENT RUPTURE

Ligaments hold two bones together so a rupture can cause a bone to suddenly shift like with Love’s MCL. Lions fans saw this happen with Emmanuel Moseley’s ACL last year. Fortunately, Love avoided an ACL tear.

TENDON RUPTURE

A pop can be seen with a complete tendon tear which causes the associated muscle to suddenly retract like with the aforementioned Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles or Kirk Cousin’s Achilles last year. There are many ligaments, tendons, and bands around the knee so it’s possible that Love could have injured one of them in addition to the MCL.

PATELLA DISLOCATION

A patella that dislocates and jumps out of the trochlear groove could cause a sudden pop. On video, it looks like this may have happened with Love.

Most patella dislocations will spontaneously reduce which means it falls back into place without any intervention. Thus we would not necessarily have seen the medical staff put the patella back in place.

In 99% of patella dislocations, the medial patellofemoral ligament is torn which would show on MRI. Love and the Packers very likely know at this point whether he had a patella dislocation.

MUSCLE SPASM

A muscle spasm caused by cramps could be sudden enough to look like a pop. Love had been experiencing calf cramps for much of the game but it’s the quad muscles that would have had to be involved in this case.

OUTLOOK

After a scary-looking knee event, the outcome is about as good as could be hoped. MCL’s tend to heal well on their own without surgery. Love could return from his mild-moderate MCL sprain anywhere from two to six weeks, with three to four weeks being most likely. There should be no long-term issues.

If he had a patella dislocation without complications, the expected return is about three weeks. Patrick Mahomes in 2019 and Matthew Stafford in 2009 both returned in three weeks from patella dislocations. (Stafford technically was four weeks as the last week was a bye.)

Love also may have suffered a mild left high ankle sprain. There does not appear to be any concern about the ankle so he likely would not miss any time if this was the only injury.

In eight weeks on November 3, the Packers play the Lions for the first time and there is a good chance Love will be fully recovered by then.

NFC North watch: Packers lose in Brazil, Jordan Love injured

NFC North watch: Packers lose in Brazil, Jordan Love injured late in the loss to the Eagles

The Green Bay Packers opened up their 2024 season playing on a Friday night in Brazil. The unconventional location and time proved costly for the team most often cited as the biggest challenge to NFC North supremacy for the Detroit Lions.

The Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, 34-29, and might have lost starting quarterback Jordan Love to an injury. Love went down late in the game with a lower body injury that has Packers fans quite worried.

Love didn’t have a great night, nor did Green Bay coach Matt Lafleur. The Packers opted for several short field goals instead of pushing for points when the Eagles defense was not clicking. The Packers also committed 10 penalties.

While everyone awaits word on Love, the Packers are 0-1 and host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2.

Bears sign ex-Lions long snapper Scott Daly

Bears sign ex-Lions long snapper Scott Daly to their practice squad a day after Detroit released Daly

Scott Daly was one of the veteran roster cuts by the Detroit Lions ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline. It didn’t take long for Daly to find his next team.

Daly, the Lions regular long snapper for the past three seasons, quickly signed with the rival Chicago Bears. The 30-year-old Daly is a Chicago-area native and joined the Bears practice squad. He lost out in Detroit’s camp competition with undrafted rookie Hogan Hatten.

The Bears lost their own long snapper, Patrick Scales, to injured reserve. Daly is expected to be elevated from the practice squad in Week 1.

Ravens OC Todd Monken should not take preseason struggles lightly

There has been a consistent problem within the Baltimore Ravens offense through all three preseason. OC Todd Monken must adjust.

NFL fans always revert to the “it’s just the preseason” moniker when their favorite team gets blasted during an exhibition game. However, we’ve seen the same consistent problem within the Baltimore Ravens offense throughout all three preseason games. These problems directly relate to offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s execution and scheme.

Firstly, minimum targets have been made towards rookie wide receiver Devontez Walker, who still tends to have an injury. Secondly, countless turnovers on offense indicate that not everyone is in sync throughout the depth chart.

Through 180 total minutes of preseason football, the Ravens failed to produce a game score higher than 17 points and have averaged just 11 first downs per game. Meanwhile, their opponents have averaged 21 first downs a game versus them.

Again, it is endlessly presumptuous to assume that the Ravens will be the same defensive powerhouse from a season ago with key losses on their depth chart. This means their offense will need to be sharp, and we’ve seen everything but sharpness from the reserves, which should be feeding off the leadership of NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and company.

Neither the Green Bay Packers nor the Ravens starters were participatory, so that excuse doesn’t fit as a scapegoat. Monken is responsible for establishing a competitive spirit on offense so the team can carry over into the regular season. So far, things have been a struggle.

NFC North watch: Vikings lose QB J.J. McCarthy to a knee injury

NFC North watch: Vikings lose QB J.J. McCarthy to a knee injury which will sideline their first-round rookie for some time

It’s been a rough week on the injury front for the Detroit Lions, with nearly a dozen players sidelined with various ailments. The Lions are not alone in fighting the injury bug around the league and within the NFC North division.

In Minnesota, the Vikings will be without its most prominent rookie to start the season. First-round pick quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Michigan will be idled for at least a few weeks with a knee injury. McCarthy sat out from practice on Monday with knee soreness, and additional testing revealed a torn meniscus.

The Vikings announced that McCarthy “will undergo a procedure for a torn meniscus in his right knee.”

Recovery times for a torn meniscus vary widely and are also dependent upon what type of procedure is performed. Week 1 is four weeks away, and that’s the bare minimum timeline from various medical resources for nonsurgical return to action. Even a minor surgical procedure could keep McCarthy out well into his rookie campaign, though that’s an unknown timeline at this point.

Veteran Sam Darnold figures to now be the unquestioned starting quarterback to start the regular season.

NFC North watch: How the Lions division rivals fared in preseason openers

NFC North watch: How the Lions division rivals fared in preseason openers, including the rookie QBs and a rookie kicker who shined

The Detroit Lions slogged to a 14-3 preseason loss on Thursday night in soggy New York to the Giants. Playing almost no players who will see the field for meaningful reps in 2024, Detroit dropped the first exhibition game.

How did the rest of the Lions division, the NFC North, fare in its preseason week games?

Chicago Bears

The Bears slaughtered the Bills, 33-6, in Buffalo in what was Chicago’s second exhibition game; Chicago opened the preseason in the Hall of Fame Game a week earlier.

Rookie QB Caleb Williams played the first two drives for Chicago and led the Bears to two field goals, completing four of his seven passes. Former Lions RB D’Andre Swift managed just three yards on his one carry but did pull down a 42-yard catch-and-run reception. Chicago rested some starters on defense but had the projected first-team offense on the field for two drives.

The Bears defense took out some aggression on former teammate Mitchell Trubisky, who was one of three Buffalo QBs under constant pressure from the Chicago pass rush all night. Rookie EDGE Austin Booker bagged 2.5 sacks in his Bears debut.

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay went into Cleveland and ran away with a 23-10 victory over the Browns on Saturday evening. The Packers ran out most of the starting lineup for the opening drive, and they didn’t get much work; Jordan Love hit Dontayvion Wicks for an easy 61-yard touchdown on the game’s third play.

The Packers had 11 different players register rushing attempts and receptions in the game, which devolved into a snoozefest with the deep reserves for both teams in after halftime.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings edged past the Las Vegas Raiders in what was the most closely contested game of the weekend. Rookie kicker Will Reichard drilled a 38-yard field goal as time expired to give Minnesota the home exhibition win.

First-round QB J.J. McCarthy played extensively for Minnesota and looked very good. The Michigan product completed 11 of his 17 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns, also throwing an interception. Both teams played most of their starters for the first few drives, though McCarthy technically isn’t the starter (yet) in Minnesota, with Sam Darnold still above him on the depth chart. The Raiders won the first half, 20-7.
