NFC North watch: Vikings make another QB change after losing to the Lions

NFC North watch: Vikings make another QB change after losing to the Lions, benching Nick Mullens for rookie Jaren Hall

Looking down from atop the NFC North, there is a big game in Week 17 for second place behind the champion Detroit Lions. The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings are facing off to be No. 2 and keep their chances of qualifying for the postseason alive.

Minnesota will host the Packers on Sunday night with a new quarterback under center. After Nick Mullens threw four interceptions to the Lions in Detroit’s Week 16 win in Minnesota, the Vikings are turning to rookie Jaren Hall at quarterback.

Hall was Minnesota’s fifth-round pick out of BYU. He started one other game but was quickly knocked out with a brain injury.

The winner of Sunday’s game will finish level its record at 8-8 and stay alive in the chase for one of the final two wild card spots. That could include a trip to Ford Field in the wild card round to meet the Lions, depending on how the final two weeks play out.

The Lions drought is over and it feels so good

The Lions drought is over and it feels so good, from Russell Brown

The Detroit Lions did something that we haven’t seen in this town for three decades. Some of my colleagues were graduating high school, while others like myself, were just figuring out how to walk when the Lions last won a division title. So much time has passed that gas prices have nearly tripled since 1993 and the division has been renamed from the NFC Central to the NFC North.

Since it became the NFC North in 2002, the division has been primarily dominated by the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. The Packers have won the crown 12 times since then and the Vikings have done it five times. But the drought is finally over for Detroit.

On Christmas Eve, the Lions beat the Vikings 30-24 to win their first NFC North title. Despite intercepting Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens four times, the game was closer than it felt like it needed to be. In fact, it took a last minute interception from Lions defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu to secure the win.

While the Vikings were driving in the closing minute of the fourth quarter, I got on my knees and legitimately started to pray. It felt like the Vikings were knocking on the door but the Lions did what they needed to do to shut that door and all of our prayers were answered.

I jumped to my feet and celebrated with friends and family. Tears filled my eyes and I just felt relieved that the Lions accomplished something that I had never seen in my life before. We got to watch our team put on the hats and shirts that read ‘2023 NFC North Champion.’ We get to look at the playoff graphics that read ‘clinched division’ under the Lions logo.

But the wight being lifted off our shoulders as fans is nothing to how it must have felt for these Lions players. Especially some of the longest tenured members of the team such as Taylor Decker, Tracy Walker and others. These players have been through it all during their tenure but their patience, hard work and dedication paid off.

For much of this season, I’ve said it publicly and privately that this is just a different team. Watching this Lions football team makes me feel a different way every week. But one thing that remains the same is that I like their chances against anyone they play.

If they play their game, they can beat anyone. Offensively, they can run with any team. Defensively, there are lapses in coverage but the “bend don’t break” mentality they seem to have adopted is enough to get it done. Most importantly, the Lions playoff push will have at least one home game.

Over the last decade, we’ve seen some playoff games for the Lions but they’ve all been on the road. In a few weeks, the Lions change that and I’d expect Ford Field to be louder than it’s ever been.

There’s plenty of football left to play but it can end sooner than expected if the Lions don’t play their best as a team. I’m relieved of what has transpired this season and I’m excited about the direction were headed. The fan in me believes we can go the distance but I’ll save that conversation for a different day. For now, I’m going to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Lions Brian Branch graded as highest rookie DB in Week 16

PFF grades Brain Branch as the top rookie DB from Week 16 of the NFL season

A lot of people, myself included, were shocked when former Alabama DB [autotag]Brian Branch[/autotag] fell to the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Lions finally took Branch off the board with the No. 45 overall pick, where he has been outstanding for them as a rookie. In 13 games, Branch has totaled 69 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, three interceptions and 10 passes broken up.

It had been 30 yards since the Detroit Lions had last won the NFC North, but they finally snapped the streak with a division-clinching win over Minnesota on Sunday. Branch and the Lions’ defense have been a massive factor in finally getting back to the top of the division despite all of the attention that goes to Detroit’s high-flying offense.

Branch was exceptional on Sunday as he tallied six tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, an interception and two passes broken up. For his remarkable efforts, PFF graded Branch as the highest rookie DB in Week 16. It is already beginning to look like Branch will be a corner stone piece for Dan Campbel’s defense for years to come.

Stock up, stock down in Vikings 30-24 loss vs. Lions

During their 30-24 loss against the Detroit Lions, some players saw their stocks rise, while others fizzled in the heat of the moment.

This isn’t fun anymore.

The Minnesota Vikings concede the NFC North to the Detroit Lions with a 30-24 loss at home. They found another way to lose late as they lost the turnover battle four-to-one, but more importantly, they lost their firm grasp on their playoff future. At 7-8, the Vikings are on the outside looking in the NFC playoff picture as both the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks sit at 8-7.

The Vikings’ defense stayed on the field for almost 40 minutes of game time, while the offense couldn’t sustain any momentum long enough to be a consistent threat. This season is starting to get away from the Vikings, and there needs to be more self-reflection as they go into these final two weeks.

As Minnesota traverses these final two weeks, some players stepped up and had their stocks rise, while some players let their stocks fall in one of the more pivotal moments of the season.

Fans are understandably excited. Many took to social media right after the game to share their glee over the Lions being the champions of the NFC North!

Quick takeaways from the Lions harrowing road win over the Vikings

Quick takeaways from the Lions harrowing road win over the Vikings that seals Detroit’s first-ever NFC North title

The Detroit Lions are the NFC North champions. I repeat: the Detroit Lions are NFC North champions!

It took a harrowing, exciting win over the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Eve to seal the franchise’s first division title in 30 years. Detroit held on for a 30-24 win when Ifeatu Melifonwu picked off Vikings QB Nick Mullens near the goal line to end a very scary threat by the home team to ruin the holiday spirit for millions of Lions fans everywhere.

Here are my quick takeaways from watching the Week 16 triumph in real time.

Lions beat the Vikings and win the NFC North

Lions beat the Vikings and win the NFC North

It was not an easy win. Divisional road wins rarely are. But the Detroit Lions gritted out a hard-fought win over the Vikings in Minnesota.

The win elevates the Lions to 11-4 and clinches the NFC North division for the first time in franchise history. The second-place Vikings will now compete for a wild-card berth as they fall to 7-8 with two weeks left.

Detroit led 17-14 at the half after trading scores with their hosts. Minnesota closed the gap late with a too-easy touchdown pass from Nick Mullens to K.J. Osborn with less than a minute to play in the half.

Dan Campbell’s Lions responded after the Vikings took a lead, with Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs leading two touchdown drives to go on top 30-21. The Vikings weren’t done, however.

Mullens led a drive that resulted in a field goal, a series where the Lions defense stiffened in the red zone. After a ponderously designed offensive drive from Detroit, the Vikings had a last shot. Detroit’s defense came up with its fourth interception of the game, with Ifea Melifonwu stepping in front of Jstin Jefferson near the goal line to seal the game and the division title.

Gibbs gained exactly 100 yards (80 rushing, 20 receiving) and scored twice, along with an early lost fumble. Goff played mistake-free, completing 30 of his 40 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown. The Lions defense had four sacks to go with the INTs, two from Kerby Joseph.

The Lions will be at least the No. 3 seed and will host a playoff game in Ford Field for the first time.

Lions seal NFC North title with fourth interception of Nick Mullens

The Detroit Lions are champions of the NFC North

It had been so long since the Detroit Lions won a division title, their last one came in the NFC Central in 1993.

That’s right, the Lions had never won an NFC North title … until Sunday.

Predictably, it wasn’t easy. They had to make their fourth interception of the Minnesota Vikings’ Nick Mullens late to seal the 30-24 victory.

The reason it was so thrilling could be attributed to Michael Badgley, who had a PAT blocked meaning the Lions only led by six.

Mullens found Justin Jefferson for a first down on the final drive. It was a third-and-27 play that on which elite wideout made an insane catch.

However, it wasn’t enough as Mullens threw his fourth pick of the game, sealing the Vikings’doom.
