Lions raise the 2023 NFC North banner in Ford Field

The Detroit Lions raise the 2023 NFC North banner in Ford Field

Fans heading into Ford Field for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings might notice a new addition. The Lions have already installed the NFC North division championship banner they earned this season.

It’s a worthy recognition of the Lions capturing the division title for the first time, and the team’s first overall division title since the 1993 season. The banner recognizing the old NFC Central championships had been lonely in that section fo the Ford Field rafters for far too long.

Having it up for the visit from the Vikings is a nice reminder to the visitors that Dan Campbell’s team clinched that banner in their house and there isn’t anything they can do about it.

Giants’ DC Wink Martindale compared Kevin O’Connell to pop star

Giants’ DC Wink Martindale compared Kevin O’Connell to pop star

The Vikings are slated to host the New York Giants this Saturday at US Bank Stadium, and just like every other week in the NFL, teams will hold press conferences leading up to the game.

Typically, the press conferences are just the coaches and coordinators talking about the opposing team they are going to face and which players they’ll need to stop in order to put themselves in a position to win. Giants’ defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale made things a little interesting this week when he compared Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell to a famous celebrity.

“I’m a blue collar guy going against Harry Styles.”

Martindale has been a coach in the NFL since 2004 and was probably comparing O’Connell to Styles given his age. O’Connell is the second-youngest NFL head coach at age 37.

After a quick chuckle from the media, Martindale goes on to say,

“I really like Kevin. I think he’s done a great job, not only calling the offense, but the entire team.”

We’ll see if Kevin O’Connell has any response to Martindale’s comparison, but he is right about O’Connell doing a great job this season. O’Connell has led the Vikings to an 11-3 record and NFC North title in his first year as head coach.

Packers clinch NFC North title with win over Lions

The Green Bay Packers are the champions of the NFC North in 2020.

For the second consecutive season, the Green Bay Packers can celebrate an NFC North championship in a division rival’s stadium.

The Packers beat the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Ford Field, clinching the NFC North title in 2020.

The Packers’ win over the Lions combined with the Minnesota Vikings’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier on Sunday handed Matt LaFleur’s team the title.

The Packers have won the NFC North seven times in the last 10 years.

Last season, the Packers clinched the division with a primetime win over the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Week 16.

Now that the division title and a playoff are clinched, the Packers can focus on chasing the No. 1 seed in the NFC over the final three games of 2020.

The Packers have advanced to the NFC Championship Game each of the last three times they won the division (2014, 2016, 2019) but lost all three games, all on the road.
