Analyzing Sunday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Yankees (3-0) and Houston Astros (0-3) meet Sunday as they close out a 4-game season-opening series at Minute Maid Park. First pitch will be at 2:10 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Yankees lead 3-0

New York has won the 1st 3 games of this series, winning all 3 in come-from-behind fashion. The Yankees are 3-0 to start a season for the 1st time since 2003.

The Astros led Saturday’s game but failed to get clutch hits to extend what was an early 2-0 lead. For the series, Houston is just 5 of 31 (.161) with runners in scoring position.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

RHP Clarke Schmidt vs. RHP JP France

Schmidt went 9-9 with a 4.64 ERA in 2023. He registered a 1.35 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 8.4 K/9 in 159 innings.

  • Career vs. Astros: No-decision, 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 4 K in 1 start, a 4-3 home loss Aug. 3, 2023
  • Pitched 17 innings in Grapefruit League play, posting a 3.18 ERA and 19 K against 4 BB

France went 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA last season. He notched a 1.36 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 6.7 K/9 across 136 1/3 IP.

  • Career vs. Yankees: Win, 3 1/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K in 1 relief appearance, a 9-7 road victory Aug. 6, 2023
  • Logged a 4.52 ERA at home, allowing a .782 OPS (vs. 3.11 ERA, .688 OPS on the road)

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Yankees 6, Astros 4

Moneyline

Dating back to last season, New York has won 6 in a row against Houston.

The starter match-up offers up 2 pitchers whose surface numbers somewhat belied broader based skill indicators. Peg France as being a bit too far out over his skis with an ERA boosted by low batting average on balls in play figures in key situations (.274 with RISP, for example). Schmidt’s numbers swung the other way (example: undone by a .330 BABIP in inning-lead-off situations).

YANKEES (+110) has value in the series finale.

Run line/Against the spread

The run line tags are separated by a sea of juice. PASS.

Over/Under

The O/U is 0-2-1 in this series, and all 3 games have been close to the total.

With OF Juan Soto looking sharp early (6 for 12, double, home run, 3 RBIs, 3 walks), the New York offense is looking more dangerous than it did last season when the Yankees ranked 25th in MLB with 4.15 runs per game.

Bullpen options are a little bit on tilt and more exposed after earlier appearances in this long series.

BACK THE OVER 9.5 (-110).

New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Yankees (2-0) and Houston Astros (0-2) play the 3rd game of a 4-game series Saturday at Minute Maid Park. Start time will be at 7:15 p.m. ET (FOX). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Yankees lead 2-0

New York has won the 1st 2 games of this series, and both have been in late-rally fashion. The Yankees won Friday’s game 7-1, and New York pitchers helped their cause by continually pitching out of jams. They held Houston to a 1-of-12 mark with runners in scoring position.

With Friday’s setback, the Astros are 0-2 to start a season for the 1st time since 2011. They have led off the innings of their 2 games at a .389 clip (on-base percentage), but Houston batters have scuffled in driving in runs so far. They have hit .182 with runners in scoring position.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

RHP Marcus Stroman vs. RHP Hunter Brown

Stroman went 10-9 with a 3.95 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 7.8 K/9 in 136 2/3 innings last season.

  • Clocked a 2.61 ERA over 20 2/3 spring training innings
  • Over his last 4 season-debut starts has allowed just 3 runs across 23 IP

Brown went 11-13 with a 5.09 ERA in 2023. He registered a 1.36 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9 and 10.3 K/9 in 155 2/3 innings.

  • Pitched around a .330 batting average on balls in play
  • Struggled at Minute Maid Park, notching a 6.56 ERA in 15 starts

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 4, Yankees 3

Moneyline

Hunter figures as being underrated. His .330 BABIP stands out as a key bad-luck indicator. He clocked a .354 BABIP in his home starts. The Houston righty was sharp out of the gate last season, logging a 2.37 ERA on a .544 OPS allowed. This spring training, he notched a 2.12 ERA in 17 IP.

New York is 2-0 and has scored 12 runs, but the Yanks have mostly sputtered offensively through the bulk of both contests.

FanDuel Sportsbook offers a better tag here. BACK THE ASTROS (-134).

Run line/Against the spread

The home 9 is the lean overall but so is the Under. Avoid the higher potential of a 1-run contest. PASS.

Over/Under

Houston’s regular-season home series games against New York have seen the Under go 5-2-1 since 2022.

Stroman has a solid history of early-season success (.639 OPS allowed in March/April during his career). Pitchers have been ahead of hitters so far in this series, but that’s hidden a bit in the 2 final scores.

BACK THE UNDER 9.5 (-110).

New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Yankees (1-0) and Houston Astros (0-1) meet Friday as they continue their 4-game series at Minute Maid Park. First pitch will be at 8:10 p.m. ET (Apple TV+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Yankees lead 1-0

New York fell behind 4-0 in Thursday’s opener, but battled back to win 5-4  despite hitting into 3 clutch-situation double plays early in the game.

The Astros will look to bounce back at a venue that was unkind to them a year ago. They were the only playoff team in 2023 to go under-.500 at home (39-42).

Yankees at Astros projected starters

LHP Carlos Rodon vs RHP Cristian Javier

Rodon went 3-8 with a 6.85 ERA in 64 1/3 IP last season. He clocked a 1.45 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9 and 9.0 K/9 in a season marred by injury.

  • Battled forearm, back and hamstring problems and did not make his 2023 debut until July 7
  • Logged a lackluster 9.14 ERA over his last 5 starts of the season

Javier was 10-5 with a 4.56 ERA in 2023. He posted a 1.27 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9 and 8.8 K/9 in 162 IP.

  • Owns a 3.57 ERA over 109 career games
  • Has held current New York batters to an anemic .492 OPS

  • Over/Under (O/U): 9 (O: -115 | U: -105)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 6, Yankees 4

Moneyline

PASS: Better relative value can be found on the run line.

Run line/Against the spread

Dating back to last season, the Yanks have won 4 in a row against the Astros. And this is an Astros offense that scuffled in spring training: Houston slugged a mere .384.

But Javier had the better spring numbers in this starter matchup, and the Houston righty was quite good last season at home (3.71 ERA). He has also filed good March/April numbers over his career.

Offensively, facing a left-hander likely goes as a green check mark on the Houston side. That figures to set up the Astros with a platoon advantage.

With the Over being a strong lean, consider a partial-unit play on HOUSTON -1.5 (+155).

Over/Under

Rodon coughed up 4 HRs in 19 1/3 spring-training innings and is 1 of many question marks for Yankee pitching as the season gets underway. The Astros are loaded with right-handed bats and last season ranked 2nd in MLB with an .809 OPS against southpaws.

The back ends of both bullpens were utilized in Thursday’s game.

BACK THE OVER 9 (-115).

New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Yankees and Houston Astros meet on Opening Day at Minute Maid Park with Thursday’s 1st pitch set for 4:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Yankees took 5 of 7 from the Astros last season

New York went 82-80 and finished 4th in the AL East last season. The Yankees open their 2024 campaign with an eye at getting back to October baseball. New York missed the postseason in 2023 for the 1st time since 2016.

The Astros went 90-72 in 2023 and won the AL West. They made it to the AL Championship Series before being ousted by the eventual World Series-champion Texas Rangers.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

LHP Nestor Cortes vs. LHP Framber Valdez

Cortes (2023: 5-2, 4.97 ERA) makes his 1st MLB start since Aug. 4. He logged a  1.25 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 9.5 K/9 in 63 1/3 IP last season.

  • Only made 1 start after May 30 due to a rotator cuff strain
  • Registered an 8.10 ERA, 1.74 WHIP in 10 spring training innings
  • Owns a career ERA of 3.82 in 104 games (56 starts)

Valdez (2023: 12-11, 3.45 ERA) logged a 1.13 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 9.1 K/9 across 198 IP last season.

  • Has given the Astros 31 starts in each of the last 2 seasons
  • Logged a 2.51 1st-half ERA in 2023 and a 4.66 ERA 2nd-half figure

  • Over/Under (O/U): 8.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 4, Yankees 3

Moneyline

PASS: Better relative value can be found on the run line.

Run line/Against the spread

The Yanks earned a 3-game sweep at Minute Maid last Sept. 1-3. They go with positive-regression candidate Cortes, who filed sub-3.00 ERA seasons in 2021 and 2022.

Houston had a power outage in spring training, slugging a mere .384.

With the Under being a solid lean, TAKE NEW YORK +1.5 (-160).

Over/Under

These top-level AL foes have not seen these starters much (New York seeing Valdez for the 1st time since June 2022, and Houston seeing Cortes just once last season — for 4 innings), and both southpaws are a tough read.

With the scheduled starters plus fresh bullpens, and likely good pitching all the way around, BACK THE UNDER 8.5(+100).

New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Yankees (67-69) and Houston Astros (77-60) play the finale of a 3-game set at Minute Maid Park Sunday. First pitch is at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Yankees lead 4-2

The Yankees have taken the first 2 games of this series, 5-4 Saturday and 6-2 Friday. They have won 5 of 6 to pull within 8 1/2 games of an AL Wild Card spot. It’s still highly unlikely there will be time to make it all the way back, but this team is showing some fight after a rough season.

The Astros had won 5 straight before this series but are 5-5 and 10-10 over the last 10 and 20 games, respectively. Houston is just 35-33 at home but 42-27 on the road, which is a crazy split for a team in competition to win its division. Houston is 1 game out in the AL West.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

RHP Michael King vs. RHP Cristian Javier

King (3-5, 2.96 ERA) makes his 4th start and 44th appearance. He has a 1.15 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 10.7 K/9 in 73 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 4 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K Tuesday at the Detroit Tigers
  • In 3 starts this year: 0-1, 2.08 ERA, 8 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 11 K
  • 5 career relief appearances vs. Astros: 2-1, 3.38 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, 8 K in 5 1/3 IP

Javier (0-2, 4.66 ERA) makes his 26th start. He has a 1.31 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 8.2 K/9 in 131 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 4 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 6 BB, 4 K Monday at the Boston Red Sox
  • 3 career regular season starts vs. Yankees: 1-0, 2.16 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, 20 K in 16 2/3 IP

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 5, Yankees 4

Moneyline

The Astros are due to wake from their slumber. They scored 4 runs in the first 4 innings Saturday and then couldn’t cash in despite having RHP Luis Severino on the ropes. They need this game more than the Yankees to keep pace with the Seattle Mariners.

Take the ASTROS (-145) to avoid the sweep.

Run line/Against the spread

We’re picking New York to cover, but the -165 price isn’t favorable with the amount of risk involved. PASS.

Over/Under

This number dropped from 9 to 8.5 this morning, which has tipped the scales. The Yankees are 4-4-2 O/U over the last 10, and Houston is 7-2-1. The Over is 4-5-1 over the last 10 in this series and 2-0-1 in the last 3 meetings. With two questionable hurlers in a nationally televised game, I’ll LEAN OVER 8.5 (-110).

New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New York Yankees (66-69) and the Houston Astros (77-59) play the middle contest of a 3-game series Saturday at Minute Maid Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Yankees lead 3-2

The Yankees rolled up a 6-2 victory in the series opener Friday night behind LHP Carlos Rodon, cashing as a moderate underdog (+155) as the total (8) pushed at most shops. New York has come alive with 4 wins in the past 5 games overall, including 3 victories as an underdog.

The Astros remain tied atop the American League West division with the Seattle Mariners despite Friday’s setback. It was Houston’s first loss in 6 tries. The Astros are just 35-32 at home, while posting a plus-99 run differential overall.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

RHP Luis Severino vs. RHP Hunter Brown

Severino (4-8, 6.64 ERA) makes his 17th start and 18th overall appearance. He has a 1.66 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 in 81 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 0 BB and 8 K in a 4-1 road win vs. the Detroit Tigers Monday
  • 2023 road splits: 1-6, 8.06 ERA (44 2/3 IP, 40 ER), 11 HR, 1.93 WHIP, .340 opponent batting average (OBA) in 9 starts and 1 relief appearance
  • 2023 vs. Houston: Loss, 4 IP, 5 ER, 5 H (2 HR), 3 BB, 4 K at Yankee Stadium Aug. 4

Brown (10-9, 4.47 ERA) makes his 25th start and 26th overall appearance. He has a 1.33 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 10.3 K/9 in 133 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 9 K in 9-2 road win vs. the Detroit Tigers last Saturday
  • 2023 home splits: 3-5, 5.47 ERA (51 IP, 31 ER), 4 HR, 1.57 WHIP, .285 OBA in 10 starts
  • 2023 vs. N.Y. Yankees: Win, 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 H (2 solo HR), 1 BB, 4 K at Yankee Stadium Aug. 4

  • Over/Under (O/U): 9 (O: +100 | U: -120)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 7, Yankees 4

Moneyline

The Astros (-185) are a little too expensive for my liking, costing you nearly 2 times your potential return. That’s risky, especially with Friday’s game serving as a cautionary tale why never to bet heavy favorites.

PASS.

Run line/Against the spread

The ASTROS -1.5 (+105) are a much better value at plus-money on the run line.

While Houston failed to cover in the series opener, losing outright Friday, the Astros are 3-1 on the run line as a favorite in the previous 4 outings overall. Brown already outpitched Severino at The Stadium in early August, and now he’ll do the same at MMP.

Over/Under

OVER 9 (+100) is a solid play at even-money.

Severino has been extremely giving overall this season, but especially so on the road. And Brown has also been rather mediocre at home, so New York should chip in on pushing the total across the finish line for Over bettors, too.

The New York Yankees (65-69) open a 3-game series against the Houston Astros (77-58) on Friday at Minute Maid Park. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET (Prime Video). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: tied 2-2

The Yankees lost 4-3 to the Detroit Tigers on Thursday in the 10th inning, snapping a 3-game win streak. New York is 5-5 in its last 10 games and is in last place in the AL East and 10 1/2 games out of an AL Wild Card.

The Astros defeated the Boston Red Sox 7-4 Wednesday to extend their win streak to 5 games. Houston has won 7 of its last 10 contests and is tied with the Seattle Mariners for 1st place in the AL West.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

LHP Carlos Rodon vs. RHP Justin Verlander

Rodon (1-4, 5.97 ERA) makes his 9th start. He has a 1.41 WHIP, 4.8 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 through 37 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: No-decision, 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 K in 7-4 road loss vs. Tampa Bay Rays Sunday
  • 2023 road stats: 0-2, 7.71 ERA (14 IP, 12 ER) in 3 starts

Verlander (10-6, 3.06 ERA) makes his 22nd start. He has a 1.17 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 8.0 K/9 through 123 1/3 IP for the Astros and New York Mets.

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 6, Yankees 3

Moneyline

With how the Yankees have been performing this season, the Astros should cruise to a win with Verlander on the mound. That being said, I’ll PASS on the moneyline in this matchup as it’s not advised to wager on Houston at nearly -200 odds.

Run line/Against the spread

ASTROS -1.5 (+100) is the play in this contest with Houston being the superior squad right now. Houston has won by multiple runs in each game during its 5-game win streak, outscoring opponents 52-17.

Over/Under

BET OVER 8.5 (-120).

While Verlander has looked solid since returning to the Astros, Houston has been crushing left-handed pitching in recent months. The Astros have the 2nd-best ISO (.235), the best wOBA (.389), and the best wRC+ (.151) against southpaws since the beginning of July.

Houston is also 8-2 to the Over in its last 10 games overall.

ALCS Game 4: Houston Astros at New York Yankees odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Houston Astros at New York Yankees ALCS Game 4 odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The New York Yankees look to stave off elimination when they host the  Houston Astros Sunday for Game 4 of their best-of-7 American League Championship Series. First pitch at Yankee Stadium is slated for 7:07 p.m. ET (TBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Yankees odds with MLB picks and predictions.

ALCS: Astros lead 3-0
Regular-season series: Astros won 5-2

The Astros won the AL West with an American League-best 106-56 record, and nothing has slowed them down in the postseason. Houston is 6-0 in the postseason. In October –over an 11-game stretch including playoff and regular-season contests — Houston is 10-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 0.92 WHIP.

New York was shut out 5-0 in Game 3 and has scored just 4 runs on 12 hits in the series. The last time the Yankees offense had a 3-game struggle like this  was in late-summer, when from Aug. 9-Sept. 4 the club averaged just 2.79 runs per game. During that stretch, New York notched an anemic .568 OPS.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

RHP Lance McCullers, Jr. vs. LHP Nestor Cortes

McCullers went 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9, and 9.4 K/9 in 47 2/3 IP across 8 starts in the regular season.

  • Has a 3.95 road ERA over the last 3 seasons (2020-22)
  • In his last 6 regular-season games and 1 postseason start (Oct. 15), has held foes to 2 runs or less and owns a 1.90 ERA over that span
  • Has a 2.56 ERA in 53 1/3 career playoff IP (6 shutout IP in 2022)

Cortes made 28 regular-season starts. He went 12-4 with a 2.44 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 9.3 K/9 in 158 1/3 IP.

  • Was 6-1 with a sparkling 1.95 ERA in 15 home starts in the regular  season

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 3, Yankees 2

Moneyline

McCullers makes this start on 8 days’ rest. The veteran right-hander has been terrific on extended rest during his career and in recent seasons (3.04 career ERA when rested 6-plus days).

Houston is exhibiting advantages in so many part of the game, and the Astros hit southpaws at a .783 clip (OPS) in the regular season.

HOUSTON (+102) is worth a partial-unit play. Look for +108 for a fully-vested wager amount.

Run line/Against the spread

BACK THE YANKEES -1.5 (+165).

In their last 7 home games against eventual playoff teams, the Yankees have gone 6-1. All 6 wins have been by multiple runs.

Over/Under

There is some analytics lean toward the Over, but the Yankees have exhibited extreme slumps before, and they could well be clogged in one right now. The Under is 7-1-1 in the last 9 Yankees-Astros games, and Game 4 offers up rested back ends for both bullpens and a weather forecast with a pitchers’ breeze blowing in from left-center.

Take the UNDER 6.5 (+100).

ALCS Game 3: Houston Astros at New York Yankees odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Houston Astros at New York Yankees ALCS Game 3 odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The New York Yankees look to get into the win column when they host the  Houston Astros Saturday for Game 3 of their best-of-7 American League Championship Series. First pitch at Yankee Stadium is slated for 5:07 p.m. ET (TBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Yankees odds with MLB picks and predictions.

ALCS: Astros lead 2-0
Regular-season series: Astros won 5-2

The Astros won the AL West with an American League-best 106-56 record, and nothing has slowed them down in the postseason. Over a 10-game stretch including playoff and regular-season contests, Houston is 9-1 with a 1.64 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in the month of October.

New York is likely glad to have left Minute Maid Park to continue this series on home turf in the Bronx. The Yankees struck out 30 times over Games 1 and 2, and they have fanned 57 times in 5 total games at Houston in 2022. Dating back to Sept. 10, the AL East champs are 11-3 — with 9.0 strikeouts per contest — over their last 14 games at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Yankees 5, Astros 3

Moneyline

New York is a lean, but the prices are bracketing a leverage position on that side.

PASS.

Run line/Against the spread

BACK THE YANKEES -1.5 (+150).

In their last 7 home games against eventual playoff teams, the Yankees have gone 6-1. All 6 wins have been by multiple runs.

Over/Under

The Under is 6-1-1 in the last 8 Yankees-Astros games, but Saturday’s contest has a slight Over lean to it.

Both bullpens are too far over their skis with fine surface numbers over recent weeks. There is some performance risk to Javier on the Houston side and some yielding-a-couple-homers risk to Cole on the New York side.

New York has smacked 18 HR over its last 12 games at Yankee Stadium.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-125).

ALCS Game 2: New York Yankees at Houston Astros odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s New York Yankees at Houston Astros ALCS Game 2 odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The New York Yankees and Houston Astros play Game 2 of their best-of-7 American League Championship Series Thursday. First pitch at Minute Maid Park is slated for 7:37 p.m. ET (TBS). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Yankees vs. Astros odds with MLB picks and predictions.

ALCS: Houston leads 1-0 after a 4-2 triumph in Wednesday’s opener
Regular-season series: Houston won 5-2

The league posted a .687 OPS at Minute Maid Park this season, but the Yankees registered just a .598 mark in their 3 regular-season losses there. They added just 5 hits and 2 walks against strong pitching from RHP Justin Verlander and 3 relievers Wednesday. New York struck out 17 times Wednesday and has fanned 44 times in 4 total games at Minute Maid.

The Astros won the AL West with an American League-best 106-56 record, and nothing has slowed them down in the postseason. Over a 9-game stretch including playoff and regular-season contests, Houston is 8-1 with a 1.80 ERA and 0.94 WHIP.

Yankees at Astros projected starters

RHP Luis Severino vs. LHP Framber Valdez

Severino went 7-3 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 9.9 K/9 through 102 IP over 19 regular-season starts.

  • Went 5 2/3 IP with 3 ER against the Cleveland Guardians Saturday in his last turn
  • Missed over 2 months in the 2nd half with a lat injury. Owns a 2.49 ERA in 4 starts since returning Sept. 21
  • Pitched a game at Houston June 30 and allowed 2 ER in 6 IP

Valdez made 31 starts in the regular season. He went 17-6 with a 2.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 8.7 K/9 in 201 1/3 IP.

  • Yielded 3 runs in 6 IP in a June 23 start at Yankee Stadium; owns a 6.75 ERA across 3 all-time starts against New York (2019-22)
  • Posted better numbers on the road each of the last 2 seasons; notched a 3.54 home ERA in 2022
  • Pitched last Thursday against Seattle and allowed 2 ER in 5 2/3 IP; owns a 6.75 ERA over his last 6 postseason games (2021-22)

Yankees at Astros picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 4, Yankees 3

Moneyline

Luis Severino has looked quite good since his late-September return to action.

Framber Valdez could get tangled up in too much traffic with control problems, especially considering the Yanks are dangerous in drawing walks and working the count. New York is the lean, but consider holding off for a price north of +135.

PASS.

Run line/Against the spread

Actually prefer a Yankees +1.5 wager in this game, but AVOID this RL action unless that tag for the visitors drops to -165.

Over/Under

The Under is 5-1-1 in the last 7 Yankees-Astros games and was a +100 winning play in Wednesday’s series opener.

But peg Game 2 as a swing toward the bats. Both bullpens are too far over their skis with fine surface numbers over recent weeks and both starters have some generous rates around the margins that have tamped their ERAs down just a bit.

Take the OVER 6.5 (-140). Consider a partial-unit play unless the price comes down to -125.
