Fantasy football: Where to draft New Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave

Analyzing New Orleans Saints WR Chris Olave’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

The New Orleans Saints have struggled to get their feet under their offense in the post-Drew Brees era, but when healthy they have some deadly talents including quarterback Jameis Winston, running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Michael Thomas. Given Thomas’ recent injury history, the Saints front office felt it had to hedge its bets and took Chris Olave with the 11th pick of the 1st round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Below, we look at Chris Olave‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Olave was a star at Ohio State and has a skill set that translates well to transitioning to the NFL. Where is he currently ranked, he could be one of the top sleeper candidates deep into the back end of fantasy drafts.

Chris Olave’s ADP: 114.22

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Olave’s positioning (the 44th ranked wide receiver) puts him in the middle of the WR5 crop in 10-player leagues. This is an area where savvy owners who have depth at the top of their wide receiver roster feel comfortable rolling the dice on a player with breakout potential and Olave is one of those guys.

His ADP puts him in the middle of a group of players on teams with fantasy questions at quarterback. He is slightly behind Robert Woods (Tennessee Titans) at 103.19 and Chase Claypool (Pittsburgh Steelers) at 110.97 and a little ahead of DeVante Parker (New England Patriots) at 115.40 and D.J. Chark (Detroit Lions) at 118.05.

Where should you draft Olave?

When you get this deep in a fantasy draft and you’re looking to fill out your wide receiver roster there are typically 1 of 2 avenues fantasy owners take — grab a veteran guy with some gas left in the tank that provides a “name” player who makes a fantasy owner feel confident when forced to play him. or swing for the fence on a young talent who could be a breakout hit.

Olave has elite speed and his role early on is expected to be the designated deep threat. Given the defensive attention Thomas will receive if he’s healthy, many of Olave’s deep routes are going to be in single coverage. Winston has never been shy about throwing the deep ball and Olave could be the perfect receiver for his style of play.

When you’re looking at the players that would be in the WR5 range you need to ask yourself who in that grouping is most likely to make a big jump to where his ranking will be in 2023? For money, Olave as at the head of that list.

Fantasy football: Where to draft New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston

Analyzing New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

The New Orleans Saints have been struggling to adjust following the retirement of first ballot Hall of Famer Drew Brees and are looking to help quarterback Jameis Winston reclaim his career.

Below, we look at Jameis Winston‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

In 2019, Winston posted mammoth numbers, throwing for 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns, but he also threw 30 interceptions — which got him run out of Tampa Bay and being viewed as 1st-round bust. After sitting behind Brees in 2020, he got the first chance to replace him, but tore an ACL in the 7th game of the season. He comes back this year looking for redemption and he has plenty of weapons around him to accomplish a successful return.

Jameis Winston’s ADP: 138.56

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Winston’s ADP is a position that would have him not making a fantasy roster in a 10-player league because he is currently the 22nd-ranked quarterback and most fantasy owners don’t take 3 quarterbacks.

Winston finds himself on the back end of a QB run in the 14th round, landing behind Justin Fields (Chicago Bears) with an ADP at 137.10, Ryan Tannehill (Tennessee Titans) at 137.31 and Mac Jones (New England Patriots) at 138.10. After Winston, the drop is pronounced. The next QB on the rankings list is Baker Mayfield (Carolina Panthers) at 149.18.

Where should you draft Winston?

According to ADP, unless you’re in a 12-player league, Winston doesn’t look like he would be drafted and, if he was, it would be at the very end of the draft.

However, given the weapons he has at his disposal — the hopeful return of star WR Thomas, 1st-round rookie WR Chris Olave and versatile running back Alvin Kamara, whoever runs the offense is going to have the chance to put up some impressive numbers on a consistent basis.

While his injuries and erratic play are red flags for some, I would have Winston rated ahead of Fields, Tannehill and Jones simply because he has too many strong weapons to ignore. He’s a dice roll on being healthy, but if he is able to stay on the field, he could be one of the biggest sleepers of the 2022 quarterback pool.

Fantasy football: Where to draft New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara

Analyzing New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara’s 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

There are always factors that can impact the fantasy football value of a player — a change in quarterback, a change in offensive coaching staff, an injury history or a potential suspension. In the case of New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, you can check all those boxes. Kamara is under investigation following a brutal altercation in Las Vegas in the offseason and, depending on how the case progresses, it could impact his 2022 season.

Below, we look at Alvin Kamara‘s 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

In his first year post-Drew Brees, Kamara saw the flip of his first 4 seasons. He set a career high with 240 carries, but had never had fewer than 80 receptions in his first 4 seasons before catching 47 last year in 13 games. He is at his best when he is catching the ball more and running it less, which is something the Saints will have to balance this season.

Alvin Kamara’s ADP: 18.04

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Without the potential suspension hanging over his head, Kamara might be ranked a little higher than his current ADP, which has him as the 10th ranked running back and coming off the draft board late in the 2nd round in 10-player leagues.

Kamara’s ADP finds him narrowly behind Nick Chubb (Cleveland Browns) at 18.02 and narrowly ahead of Saquon Barkley (New York Giants) at 18.66 and Aaron Jones (Green Bay Packers) at 20.50.

Alvin Kamara’s 2021 stats

Games: 13

Carries | rushing yards: 240 | 898

Rushing touchdowns: 4

Receptions | receiving yards: 47 | 439

Receiving touchdowns: 5

Where should you draft Kamara?

He may be a draft-day decision depending on when league’s conduct their annual drafts. Trying to get as much information as possible in the days and even hours leading up to your draft could be critical, but, as things stand at the moment, the buzz is that the case is currently moving slowly and could drag out beyond this season, which would leave Kamara fine for 2022.

For those being the last in a 10-player league to select a running back, which is where those fantasy owners would be sitting if the ADP numbers hold up,  Kamara comes with some red flags. Not only is his legal situation a concern, he hasn’t played every game in a season since his rookie year and missed 4 games last year.

While I would be likely to make a point to get a couple of other running backs in the next 3 picks if I was to take Kamara, his dual threat ability makes him one of the most dangerous fantasy players in the league and he is capable of putting up consistently good numbers and enormous totals 3 or 4  times a year.

Fantasy football: Where to draft New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas

Analyzing New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas’ 2022 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

Prior to signing a huge deal with New Orleans Saints, wide receiver Michael Thomas was viewed as the No. 1 fantasy wide receiver in football. He made a strong case. In 2018-19 (32 games), Thomas caught 274 passes for 3,130 yards and 18 touchdowns. Since then, however, it has been all downhill.

Below, we look at Michael Thomas‘ 2022 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Thomas played in just 7 games in 2020 and inexplicably opted to have surgery 2 months before training camp and didn’t play a down in 2021. As he enters this season, his value has bottomed out and there are some who put him even lower than his ranking should indicate he goes.

Michael Thomas’ ADP: 56.60

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

In a 10-player league, Thomas has fallen all the way to being a mid-level WR3 and is part of a clumping of wide receivers whose ADPs have them going in the 6th round.

Thomas finds himself in the middle of this cluster, behind DK Metcalf (Seattle Seahawks) at 52.52, Courtland Sutton (Denver Broncos) at 52.58 and Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions) at 55.36 and ahead of Brandin Cooks (Houston Texans) at 56.19, Adam Thielen (Minnesota Vikings) at 56.60 and Allen Robinson (Los Angeles Rams) at 57.66.

Games: 0 (7)

Receptions | targets: 0 (40) | 0 (55)

Receiving yards: 0 (438)

Receiving touchdowns: 0 (0)

Where should you draft Thomas?

If you go based purely on his talent, Thomas should be well ahead of this ranking, but after missing most of the last 2 seasons and not putting the team 1st in the timing of his 2021 surgery he has his share of critics.

At the point he is coming off draft boards he is no longer being viewed as a fantasy football starter so there isn’t the same kind of roster commitment needed from a WR1 or a WR2.

With that in mind, Thomas is worth rolling the dice on because if he comes back to his previous dominant form, he will be one of the steals of the draft at this point.
