10 former Eagles are signed to USFL teams

We’re looking at ten former Philadelphia Eagles who are making their debut during the 2023 USFL season

The revived USFL kicked off its second season on Saturday afternoon at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium as the Philadelphia Stars visited the Memphis Showboats.

Some familiar names exist, like former Alabama star running back Bo Scarbrough, embattled linebacker Reuben Foster, and many others.

The league will feature four new head coaches, one new team, and an expansion to playing games in four “hub” cities for its eight teams.

With kickoff underway, we’re looking at ten former Eagles who are set to make their USFLL debuts.

USFL Offensive Player of the Year Darius Victor to work out with the Saints

Saints to work out running back Darius Victor, who won recognition as Offensive Player of the Year with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals:

Hey, this is interesting: the New Orleans Saints expect to work out free agent running back Darius Victor ahead of training camp, as first reported by ESPN’s Mike Triplett and confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. Victor posted a dominant performance with the New Jersey Generals, running for 577 yards through 10 games and scoring 9 touchdown carries, which led the spring league and won him recognition as the USFL’s inaugural Offensive Player of the Year.

And he’s got some familiarity with New Orleans. Victor joined the Saints for training camp back in 2017, ranked behind Mark Ingram II, Alvin Kamara, and Adrian Peterson on the depth chart, and his position coach at the time (Joel Thomas, who interviewed for the head coaching job with his alma mater Idaho Vandals this offseason) is still on staff with the Saints. It makes sense that there would be some mutual interest here.

Running back is a priority for the Saints whether Alvin Kamara receives an NFL suspension or not; he could miss six games stemming from an arrest in Las Vegas earlier this year. Ingram missed some time with an injury after returning to New Orleans in a midseason trade last year, as did his backup Tony Jones Jr. Special teams ace Dwayne Washington hasn’t gotten many looks on offense, and while undrafted rookie Abram Smith has some promise he’s got an uphill battle ahead of him to make the roster. Adding a player like Victor to the mix makes sense. We’ll just have to see if the mutual interest materializes into a contract offer to Victor’s liking.

Philadelphia Stars gain USFL Championship Game thanks to 87-yard punt return

The Philadelphia Stars used a special, special-teams play to gain the North Division spot in the USFL Championship Game.

It took 37 years but the Stars are back in the USFL Championship Game.

Philadelphia made the title game in 1984 and again in 1985 when the team was based in Baltimore.

On Saturday, the Philadelphia Stars got an 87-yard punt return in the fourth quarter and downed the New Jersey Generals, 21-19, to gain the title spot.

The Stars will play either the New Orleans Breakers or Birmingham Stallions, who meet in the second semifinal later in the day at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, Oh, too.

The league saw one punt return for a TD in its regular season.

There were two in the fourth quarter as the Stars and Generals traded big plays.

The winning return was by Maurice Alexander Jr. He took a punt on a bounce and took off for paydirt with less than two minutes left.

Here is a drone cam replay of the TD:

Earlier in the quarter, league MVP KaVontae Turpin returned a punt 78 yards for six points to give New Jersey the lead.

That lead held up until Alexander’s game-winning play.

The Stars sealed the victory with a late interception.

The title game will also be played in Tom Benson Stadium on July 3. It can be seen on FOX Sports.

WATCH: Chris Orr is making plays in the USFL

The former Badger is off to a flying start in the USFL

Former Wisconsin linebacker Chris Orr is off to a terrific start with the USFL’s New Jersey Generals.

Orr is currently leading the team with 28 tackles and has been a force at linebacker throughout the early part of the season. The former Badger signed with the Carolina Panthers after going undrafted in 2020, and found his way to the revamped USFL in 2022.

Orr’s speed and tackling ability was on display as a Badger, and that same skill set has led him to 28 tackles through the first four games of the USFL season. His team has won their last three games in a row as the Generals sit at 3-1. Check out one of Orr’s best plays from last weekend’s win:

Birmingham Stallions upend New Jersey Generals on late TD in USFL opener

The Birmingham Stallions got a late TD to win the return of the USFL over the New Jersey Generals

There was drama in Saturday’s USFL opening game as the Birmingham Stallions used a late drive to down the New Jersey Generals, 28-24.

The game was simulcast on both FOX and NBC as the league began anew with the same name of one that saw stars play decades ago.

The Generals had taken a 24-21 lead on a Nick Rose field goal with less than two minutes left.

The Stallions drove down the field — aided by a facemask penalty on the Generals’ Chris Orr.

Backup quarterback J’Mar Smith led the 10-play drive and found the end zone on a two-yard scramble with 29 seconds left to give the Stallions the victory.

The game was played in Birmingham as will all games until the playoffs. Those contests will take place in Canton, Ohio, the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

New Jersey Generals’ Randy Satterfield scores first USFL touchdown

The USFL season started with a pair of touchdown passes

The first drive in the new USFL resulted in a touchdown for the New Jersey Generals.

Randy Satterfield caught a touchdown pass from Luis Perez and took a crushing hit but held on to the football for the score.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Satterfield also caught a 49-yard pass from Perez on the first play of the game.

The lead didn’t last as Alex McGough threw a 35-yard pass to Osirus Mitchell, formerly of Mississippi State for a TD.

Both teams chose the one-point PAT and converted and the game was tied at 7 and the USFL was underway.
