Netflix producers want to create a ‘kind of Marvel superhero universe’ for PGA Tour series

“The hardcore golf fan is probably going to be pretty cynical about this endeavor, but I think they’ll love it.”

Last month an A-list of PGA Tour stars, including four of the world’s top-seven players, was officially confirmed to be part of a Netflix golf series similar to that of Formula 1: Drive to Survive.

On Wednesday, two producers for the new series, Chad Mumm and Paul Martin, joined the No Laying Up podcast to speak with host Chris Solomon about what viewers should expect from the series and how it’s similar (and different) compared to the incredibly popular Drive to Survive.

“We knew we couldn’t make a show about who won every race, because that just becomes a highlight show and everyone knows about it,” said Martin, also an executive producer for Drive to Survive. “So we had to do something different and point the cameras somewhere else. The format of that show really evolved out of being on the ground and being in that world, and I think this show will be the same.”

“The hardcore golf fan is probably going to be pretty cynical about this endeavor, but I think they’ll love it,” added Martin. “We want to create this kind of Marvel superhero universe where they all exist in this ecosystem and over the course of an episode Spiderman will come to the fore, or Iron Man will come to the fore but you still see Hulk in the background. Who wins the tournament is largely irrelevant to our storytelling.”

Martin explained how Formula 1 knew it needed to get to a younger, “sexier audience” with Drive to Survive, and judging by the players named for the series, the PGA Tour realized the same. Confirmed players include (alphabetically): Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger, Cameron Champ, Joel Dahmen, Tony Finau, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Harry Higgs, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Kevin Na, Mito Pereira, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Bubba Watson.

“Our end goal is to do Drive to Survive for golf, but that doesn’t mean that we’re doing to do everything we do in Formula One and drop it on to a golf course,” said Martin.

The Tour wasn’t involved in getting players signed on for the documentary, they left that to the producers. So in 2019, Mumm went to the Masters at Augusta National and brought a list of player agents and their pictures to help make his introductions a bit easier. Fowler was the first player on board, with Thomas soon to follow. Then it was Champ and Finau.

“We’ve gotten so much already that, just the fan in me is like, ‘Oh my God, this is better than I expected right out of the gate,’” said Mumm, who added he was surprised how ready the players were to start the process.

With the players, tours, and major tournaments – even the Masters – all involved, this docuseries may just be the glimpse into the world of professional golf that fans have been waiting for.

Sean Payton makes a cameo as a janitor in ‘Home Team’ and I am LOSING MY MIND

Sean Payton’s cameo in “Home Team” is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

If you’ve come here looking for an in-depth review of Home Team, the newly released Netflix movie where Kevin James — yes, THAT Kevin James —plays former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, I can’t give you that.  I’m not trying to be blatantly disrespectful or anything — it’s just it was released like six hours ago and people have to sleep.

However, I’m online enough to know by now the movie is as unintentionally funny as we all expected it to be, and while I can’t say I had planned on seeing it, even for hate-watch reasons, Payton’s end-of-film cameo in which he plays a janitor (and sports a truly horrendous wig) just might change my mind.

See the trailer for Bubba Wallace’s ‘raw, emotional’ Netflix docuseries about his life, NASCAR career

The docuseries detailed Bubba Wallace’s life and experiences as the only Black full-time NASCAR driver.

When Bubba Wallace took charge in NASCAR’s efforts to be more inclusive and fight for racial justice in 2020 by calling for the sport to ban the Confederate flag, everything changed. The only Black full-time NASCAR driver made headlines around the country and globe, NASCAR officials followed his lead and banned the flag and Wallace’s haters are louder than ever after he spoke out.

Wallace’s life, experiences in that moment and the aftermath and his NASCAR career — including his first season driving for Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing team — are detailed in Netflix’s new docuseries, RACE: Bubba Wallace, which is set to premiere Feb. 22.

“I have a responsibility; it’s automatic that I have a responsibility,” Wallace says in the trailer about fighting inequality and injustice. “True colors are gonna come out.

More via Netflix:

Over the course of six-episodes Wallace reckons with who he is on and off the track, finding himself as both a driver and an activist. He confronts his mental health issues and permanently alters the notoriously white and conservative sport of racing by inspiring the ban on the Confederate flag. While dealing with the stress of competition and the public fallout both at the track and on social media from his stand, Wallace is supported in his efforts by his family and members of the racing community.

Directed by Erik Parker (L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later, Nas: Time Is Illmatic), it’s a six-episodes series, and each episode is 45 minutes long. Here’s the trailer, which dropped Thursday:

In a statement via Netflix, Wallace said:

“This is unlike any project I’ve ever participated in; it’s a raw, emotional and completely transparent account of the events that took place throughout the 2020 and 2021 NASCAR seasons. With me, what you see is what you get. You’ll witness the peaks and valleys of the sport and see how one’s actions off of the race track are just as important as the ones on it. One of the most compelling pieces of the series is the additional insight the viewers will gain by hearing from my peers, family and some of my partners that played a role in this monumental journey. Join me as we break down barriers, confront controversy, and welcome a new fan base to the sport of NASCAR.”

The 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season begins Feb. 20 with the Daytona 500.

NASCAR vowed to be more inclusive, but is its progress moving fast enough?

Sean Payton stepped down from the Saints, and the internet had so many Kevin James jokes

Sean Payton is stepping down, which means the internet was chock-full of jokes about Kevin James and the Netflix movie ‘Home Team.’

News broke on Tuesday afternoon (January 25) that Sean Payton, the long-time coach of the New Orleans Saints, would be stepping down.

Payton, who held the position for 16 seasons, isn’t retiring, but sources familiar with the situation say he’s could be taking a break from the profession and might potentially take his skills to the studio.

This announcement was surprising to some, and it comes on the heels of a 9-8 season in which the Saints missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Payton amassed a 152-89 record (63.1%) in his career in New Orleans, but missed the 2012 season as he was suspended for his role in the bounty scandal that embroiled the franchise.

That season spent away from the Saints is the subject of the upcoming Netflix movie, Home Team, which releases to the streaming platform Friday, January 28. Naturally, Twitter immediately had jokes about Kevin James (who is playing Payton in the movie), Payton, and more.
