The Jets trolled Sean Payton so hard with a Kevin James Home Team meme

LOL!!

Kevin James memes are all the rage right now on the internet, but the New York Jets took a different route to troll Sean Payton after their team’s big win over his Denver Broncos on Sunday.

As you may recall, Payton had this to say to USA TODAY Sports over the summer: “It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed. And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much [expletive] time trying to win the offseason—the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff. We’re not doing any of that. The Jets did that this year. You watch. Hard Knocks, all of it. I can see it coming.”

Here’s what did come: The Jets beat the Broncos in Week 5, and the Jets’ social media managers decided to use an image of James as Payton in Home Team along with a wink to Payton’s quote:

Between that and Jets players dapping Nathaniel Hackett, it was quite a day for Gang Green and a long one for Payton.

Maryland used the Kevin James meme on the jumbotron to mess with Indiana’s kicker

We bet Kevin James would approve.

It’s the year 2023, and a college football team just tried to use a picture of Kevin James on the jumbotron to get a kicker to miss an extra point.

During Maryland’s home stand against Indiana, the undefeated Terrapins turned to the most popular meme of the fall, a publicity shot of James on his old sitcom The King of Queens, to get Indiana’s kicker to miss an extra point attempt.

Sadly, the sitcom-inspired intimidation did not work, but it was an incredibly hilarious attempt for Maryland to confuse the Hoosiers kicker with the meme of the moment.

Hey, points for thinking outside of the box!

Later in the game, they tried two James pictures, just for good measure.

We applaud the effort here by Maryland, who at least got to leave Saturday’s game with a big win and a 5-0 record on the season.

Rank the Terrapins, we say, and be sure to let James know when you do.

Kevin James memes with a photo from 1998 are now popping up everywhere, out of nowhere

Where did this all come from? We don’t know, but here are some memes.

It’s the question everyone’s asking (not the one about whether Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are actually dating).

Why are there memes everywhere starring Kevin James, in a photo that — per my colleague, Mitchell Northam — is from publicity shots for King of Queens all the way back in 1998?

I mean, I get the meme — it’s James shrugging and looking both confident and sheepish at the same time, which lends itself to a lot of captions. I just can’t totally figure out the origin (I don’t think it’s because Sean Payton has been bad thus far with the Denver Broncos).

Here are the memes:

Sean Payton makes a cameo as a janitor in ‘Home Team’ and I am LOSING MY MIND

Sean Payton’s cameo in “Home Team” is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

If you’ve come here looking for an in-depth review of Home Team, the newly released Netflix movie where Kevin James — yes, THAT Kevin James —plays former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, I can’t give you that.  I’m not trying to be blatantly disrespectful or anything — it’s just it was released like six hours ago and people have to sleep.

However, I’m online enough to know by now the movie is as unintentionally funny as we all expected it to be, and while I can’t say I had planned on seeing it, even for hate-watch reasons, Payton’s end-of-film cameo in which he plays a janitor (and sports a truly horrendous wig) just might change my mind.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Sean Payton stepped down from the Saints, and the internet had so many Kevin James jokes

Sean Payton is stepping down, which means the internet was chock-full of jokes about Kevin James and the Netflix movie ‘Home Team.’

News broke on Tuesday afternoon (January 25) that Sean Payton, the long-time coach of the New Orleans Saints, would be stepping down.

Payton, who held the position for 16 seasons, isn’t retiring, but sources familiar with the situation say he’s could be taking a break from the profession and might potentially take his skills to the studio.

This announcement was surprising to some, and it comes on the heels of a 9-8 season in which the Saints missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Payton amassed a 152-89 record (63.1%) in his career in New Orleans, but missed the 2012 season as he was suspended for his role in the bounty scandal that embroiled the franchise.

That season spent away from the Saints is the subject of the upcoming Netflix movie, Home Team, which releases to the streaming platform Friday, January 28. Naturally, Twitter immediately had jokes about Kevin James (who is playing Payton in the movie), Payton, and more.

4 quick takeaways on Netflix’s ‘Home Team’ trailer

4 quick takeaways on Netflix’s ‘Home Team’ trailer, via @MaddyHudak_94:

No one really knew what to expect in the upcoming movie “Home Team,” about Sean Payton’s year coaching his son’s football team in Texas, but the official trailer dropped Tuesday and gave us an interesting glimpse. The film is set to release on Netflix on Jan. 28, 2022 starring comedian and actor Kevin James as the New Orleans Saints head coach; produced by Happy Madison Productions, it focuses on Payton’s year in suspension from the NFL and his tenure as the assistant coach of his son’s sixth grade football team.

The production company is owned by Adam Sandler, whose brother-in-law Christopher Titone wrote the script, who also happens to be dating Payton’s daughter, Meghan, who is a sports reporter. News of the feature first dropped back in April when Peter King of “Football Morning in America” reported the scoop. He’d said at the time that Payton had recently read the script and made some corrections accordingly. Fans may recall when Sandler’s production company visited Payton at the practice facility and at some point filmed a cameo of the coach dressed rather strangely.

Now back to the trailer. Here’s what stood out and what we can look forward to in the upcoming film:

NFL fans had so many thoughts on Kevin James as Sean Payton in the first absurd ‘Home Team’ trailer

Oh boy.

I don’t want to repeat myself too much from eight months ago, when the world learned that a Sean Payton biopic of sorts would be coming to screens in the near future, with Paul Blart, Mall Cop star Kevin James playing the New Orleans Saints coach back in 2012 and how he coached his son’s sixth-grade team while suspended after Bountygate.

But OK, here! From my post about Home Team in April:  “Given James’ and [Adam] Sandler’s involvement and the premise of a decorated NFL coach spending a season with his son’s sixth-grade team … are we talking about a laugh-out-loud straight comedy here? The coach who has lost his way but finds that the child-like love of the game is what makes him whole again?”

The answer, per the trailer that dropped on Tuesday, appears to be … YES, which could be glossing over Payton’s role in the pay-for-injury scandal that was uncovered.

Beyond that, NFL fans had takes on the trailer and James as Payton:

It’s here — well, almost. The official trailer for “Home Team,” the upcoming Netflix movie about Sean Payton’s year away from football, spent coaching his young son’s team in Texas, is live ahead of the film’s release date on Jan. 28.

The comedian and actor Kevin James stars as the New Orleans Saints head coach in the feature from Happy Madison Productions (the studio founded by James’ friend and frequent collaborator Adam Sandler, whose brother-in-law Christopher Titone wrote the script), with supporting actors including Rob Schneider, Taylor Lautner, and Isaiah Mustafa.

Payton approved the script himself and welcomed the cast to New Orleans for a visit at the team facility during the offseason, also shooting his own cameo. Maybe it’ll be worth a laugh. See the video embedded above for yourself.

Mark your calendars: “Home Team,” the upcoming Netflix film from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions company featuring the comedian Kevin James as New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will be released on Jan. 28, 2022.

Christopher Titone, the film’s writer and Sandler’s brother-in-law (and boyfriend of Payton’s daughter, Meghan) shared the news on Twitter with a new plot synopsis from the Los Angeles Times:

“When Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton gets suspended, he returns to his hometown to coach his son’s Pop Warner team. Kevin James, Taylor Lautner and Rob Schneider star. Directed by Charles Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane. Written by Christopher Titone & Keith Blum.”

Reactions to James being cast as Payton earlier this year were, well, mixed to say the least. Sandler’s frequent collaborator doesn’t exactly share a resemblance to the Saints head coach, but we’ll suspend our disbelief for a bit if it’s a good story. If nothing else Payton’s cameo should be funny.

LOOK: Sean Payton on set for ‘Home Team’ cameo with Kevin James

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was spotted by TMZ Sports in costume for a cameo on the “Home Team” Netflix film set with Kevin James.

Sean Payton’s 2012 suspension from the NFL has become the subject of a Netflix feature starring Kevin James from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, and the New Orleans Saints coach has given the team more than his blessing — he’s dressing up for a cameo, as seen in a TMZ Sports photo gallery from the “Home Team” film set.

The story centers on Payton’s experience coaching his son’s Pop Warner team while suspended following the NFL’s “Bountygate” debacle, in which the Super Bowl-winning coach dealt with frustrations like working with children and the complex single wing offense; Payton later joked about calling his mentor Bill Parcells and peer Jon Gruden for advice.

As for Payton’s cameo: we’re short on details, but he appears to be wearing a mechanic’s uniform (codename: Lionel) and one of the worst wigs I’ve ever seen. If he was trying to one-up Drew Brees’ getup for Undercover Boss a few years back, he fell far short of the mark. Maybe his acting chops can make up for it.
