Netflix to release documentary on Michigan sign stealing scandal

Netflix is set to release three new editions of its UNTOLD documentary series including one story regarding a Big Ten program.

On Monday, Netflix announced the upcoming release of three new additions to their UNTOLD documentary series.

Previous editions of the UNTOLD series took a look at key events such as the Malice at the Palace, Manti Teo’s girlfriend controversy, the Tim Donaghy NBA betting scandal, the rise and fall of Johnny Manizel, The BALCO scandal, and a look at the Florida Gators football program under head coach Urban Meyer.

In total, over three seasons, Netflix has released 13 documentaries.

Of the new additions to the series, one has Big Ten ties.

On August 27, Netflix will release “Sign Stealer”, regarding Michigan‘s sign stealing scandal of 2023. That being said, what makes “Sign Stealer” unique is that the documentary will be from the point of view of the man fn the middle of the scandal himself, Connor Stallions.

Also being released in the near future is a documentary about the Murder of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair and the ups and downs of legendary United States women’s soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo.

Former Vikings WR Randy Moss introduced as host of Netflix series ‘Receiver’

Vikings Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss takes over hosting duties from Peyton Manning in the new Netflix docuseries “Receiver.”

Last year, NFL Films and Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions created a docuseries for Netflix called “Quarterback.” The show gave fans unbridled access to some of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Because of the impressive viewership numbers, the producers decided to expand it to a series on pass catchers titled “Receiver.”

In the series’ opening, Peyton Manning introduces a “quarterback’s best friend,” which is receivers. The only problem is that a voice off-camera interrupts the Hall of Fame quarterback, and it’s a voice familiar to Vikings fans.

Randy Moss jumps in to say he will be handling the series on his position. The Pro Football Hall of Famer assures Manning the show is in “good hands,” a statement that Vikings fans can believe when he says it.

The entire series, now streaming on Netflix, features several of the league’s best pass catchers, led by the Vikings’ Justin Jefferson.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce turned down spot in upcoming Netflix show ‘Receiver’

Kansas City #Chiefs TE Travis Kelce turned down a spot on the upcoming Netflix show ‘Receiver’ | @EdEastonJr

Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce has an ever-growing resume of offseason activities. He’s been focused on growing his entertainment brand while making appearances and taking on projects that fit his unique character.

Kelce was a guest in a recent Barstool Sports’ “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast episode. He addressed why he’s not featured in Netflix’s upcoming docuseries “Receiver.”

“After (Patrick Mahomes) did it, I did get asked about it. I’d rather just play ball, man; I’m already doing enough with the podcast and everything,” said Kelce. “I’m way over the reality [expletive], dude. I’m out on that [expletive].”

Last year, Mahomes was one of the three stars of Netflix’s “Quarterback,” documenting his run to a Super Bowl and all the uncensored personal obstacles.

“I thought it was cool the way my brother (Jason Kelce) did his doc, though, kind of like a follow towards the end of somebody’s career, kind of the ups and downs and the battles that he had, and I think he did it the right way, but it was, it’s something that was so him,” said Kelce. “I just don’t know if I have the desire to do anything like that, so yeah, rather just focus on ball, baby.”

“Receiver” takes viewers inside the huddle and outside the lines with Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Amon-Ra St. Brown to see what it takes to stay always open. It premieres on Netflix on July 10.

Which 49ers star will be more compelling to watch on ‘Receiver’?

Are you more excited to watch Deebo Samuel or George Kittle when ‘Receiver’ debuts on Netflix?

The 49ers will be featured heavily in Netflix’s upcoming series, ‘Receiver,’ the followup to their ‘Quarterback’ series that followed QBs Marcus Mariota, Kirk Cousins and Patrick Mahomes in their football and non-football lives. This time ‘Receiver’ will follow WRs Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson and Amon-Ra St. Brown, as well as 49ers WR Deebo Samuel and TE George Kittle.

Which player will be the more intriguing to watch in the series, which follows players on and off the field?

It’s easy for Kittle to be the answer. He’s gregarious, funny and acutely aware of how to dominate a media setting. He is also a superstar when it comes to Mic’d Up segments. There just aren’t that many players in the NFL more willing to be outwardly entertaining than Kittle, and an entire show dedicated to following him around figures to be a ton of fun.

For us, however, Samuel will be the more interesting player to watch in this setting. It’s not that he doesn’t talk to media or have fun Mic’d Up moments, but we get less of Samuel in that way than we do with Kittle.

The tight end spends a ton of time in the spotlight while Samuel, for as much as we see him on the field, is less boisterous off of it. A chance to see more Samuel interactions with coaches and teammates on the field, as well as a glimpse of his life off the field should offer some new, interesting perspectives on one of San Francisco’s most important players over the last five years.

Either way the show should be a riveting watch for 49ers fans with two fan favorites at the fore. ‘Receiver’ premiers July 10 on Netflix.

Netflix series ‘Receiver’ features USC’s Amon-Ra St. Brown

Amon-Ra St. Brown stars in a new Netflix series, starting July 10.

Former USC receiver and current Detroit Lions standout Amon-Ra St. Brown will star in Netflix’s docuseries “Receiver,” which is set to premiere on July 10.

This series is the follow-up to 2023′s “Quarterback,” which focused on Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Atlanta’s Marcus Mariota. “Receivers” is an eight-episode series which will follow St. Brown, Raiders receiver Davante Adams, Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson, 49ers tight end George Kittle, and 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel as they compete.

The series is produced by NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Patrick Mahomes’ 2PM Productions.

St. Brown, the former Mater Dei and USC Trojan star, recently agreed to four-year deal with Lions worth more than $120 million this offseason. St. Brown had a tremendous 2023 season in Detroit, very nearly leading the Lions to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. St. Brown was a fourth-round NFL draft pick who has greatly exceeded the expectations attached to a player taken outside the top 100 on the big board. He will try to take the next step with the Lions in 2024.

The trailer for the new Simone Biles Netflix docuseries promises a powerful journey

We’ve got a new look at the Simone Biles Netflix docuseries.

Netflix unveiled a trailer for the new docuseries Simone Biles Rising on Wednesday.

Set for release on July 17, the series offers a look at her career after withdrawing from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and how she worked through her mental health struggles and got back on track with her stellar gymnastics career.

With Biles set to contend at the 2024 Paris Olympics, this docuseries should give sports fans an excellent look at her road back to contention.

All four episodes will stream on Netflix on the same day next month, further making this one of the marquee sports documentary projects this summer.

Netflix’s ‘Receiver’ trailer showcases 49ers’ run to Super Bowl 58, with an emphasis on George Kittle for some reason

Netflix apparently considers George Kittle … a receiver?

Fresh off the success of Quarterback last summer, the documentary series chronicling the in-season NFL life of superstars like Patrick Mahomes, Netflix is officially running it back.

This time, though, the streaming giant will highlight another pro football position: Receivers, especially of the star variety.

On Thursday, Netflix revealed a dramatic trailer for Receiver, an in-depth inside look at the on and off-field dynamics for top football playmakers dropping this July 10. And while there are familiar names like the Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson and Detroit Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown featured, for some reason, George Kittle — a tight end — is also involved.

I mean, I guess Kittle technically catches passes, as he explains in the video, so he qualifies as a “receiver.” Still, he’s also a 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end who is probably an in-line blocking behemoth first and foremost. So, what are we doing here?

Ah, whatever, he’s in the show, and there’s a lot of 49ers talk as they make a run to Super Bowl 58:

For posterity, the five players featured in Receiver will be:

  • Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions
  • Davante Adams, Las Vegas Raiders
  • Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers
  • George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

If this is even halfway as good as Quarterbackwhich gave us a lot of terrific behind-the-scenes moments — then look for Receiver to be an absolute gem.

Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi are set for a hot dog eating contest on Netflix

Joey Chestnut. Joey Chestnut. Netflix hot dog eating contest. Let’s go.

Two of the greatest food-eating competitors will square off in a marquee showdown later this summer.

Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi are set to face each other in Netflix’s Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef hot dog eating competition, which will stream live on the platform on Sept. 2.

News broke this week that Chestnut will not participate in the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest next month, paving the way for this to be his main event for the summer.

The release promises an event viewers will relish: “The showdown will settle a 15-year rivalry between the two competitive eaters: Will Chestnut maintain his title as the world’s greatest, or will Kobayashi come in with a vengeance and regain his throne?”

Netflix is finally making a Peaky Blinders movie with Cillian Murphy

Netflix is finally making a Peaky Blinders movie with Cillian Murphy. Here’s what we know.

If you’re a big fan of the BBC crime series Peaky Blinders, the beloved show is finally getting the cinematic treatment.

Netflix confirmed on Tuesday that Oscar winner Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in an upcoming Peaky Blinders movie on the streaming playform.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy said via Netflix. “It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Show director Harper will helm the film, while Knight, who created the series, will pen the script. Murphy played the antihero Shelby in six seasons of the show, with the most recent season airing in 2022.

“I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen,” Knight told Netflix about the movie. “It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.”

There’s no release date set for the project, but a 2025 or 2026 release would track the announcement timeline.

5 SEC football teams we’d love to see on possible Netflix documentary series

These five SEC football teams would make for compelling television on a possible Netflix doc series.

The Athletic reported on Thursday that Netflix was nearing a deal with the SEC to produce a documentary series about college football.

“While the contracts are not yet signed, all indications are that an agreement is close and Netflix will take viewers behind the scenes during this upcoming football season,” wrote Athletic reporters Seth Emerson and Andrew Marchand.

The reporters compared the possible SEC football documentary series to the Netflix golf series Full Swing and the Formula 1 series Drive to Survive.

A behind-the-scenes documentary about SEC football sounds like a blast. While we’d love to see the interworking of basically all of the league’s football teams, there are five that would really intrigue us.

Let’s count them down and why they’re especially interesting for a documentary study.

Texas

Chris Graythen/Getty Images

The most popular college football player who probably won’t play in 2024 has to be quarterback Arch Manning, who will presumably take over for the Longhorns in 2025. Watching Manning train on the sidelines as quarterback Quinn Ewers and coach Steve Sarkisian navigate Texas’ first season in the SEC would be excellent television for this documentary project.

Alabama

Tuscaloosa News

Former Washington coach Kalen DeBoer filling Alabama legend Nick Saban’s shoes as the coach for the Crimson Tide is going to be one of the biggest storylines in college football this season. The promise of watching DeBoer figure out how to lead a historic program like Alabama in his first season in real time is tantalizing. It’s why these doc projects exist.

Georgia

Christopher Hanewinckel/USA TODAY Sports

Coach Kirby Smart’s SEC juggernaut underachieved last season compared to its lofty standard of winning back-to-back championship games during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. How will the Bulldogs get back on top? We’d love to watch that all play out behind the scenes as new stars emerge in Athens.

Tennessee

The Knoxville News-Sentinel

The Volunteers haven’t won a national title since 1998, but coach Josh Heupel has reinvigorated Rocky Top after a period of struggle. Ballyhooed quarterback prospect Nico Iamaleava will be charged with leading Tennessee to the College Football Playoff this season, and it’d be fun to watch the Vols try and finally bring home that elusive title that has evaded the program.

Vanderbilt

Christopher Hanewinckel/USA TODAY Sports

Outside of the James Franklin years, Vanderbilt has been the SEC’s punching bag for a good part of the past two decades. Coach Clark Lea enters a pivotal year of his tenure in Music City as he’ll try to get the Commodores to a winning record for the first time since 2013. Not all documentary subjects should be contenders, as Vandy just being able to win more than it loses would make for an engaging possible storyline on the series.
