Which Celtics players stock has risen during summer league?

Which members of the Boston Celtics Summer League roster have seen their stock rise in recent weeks?

The Boston Celtics will play their final Summer League game on Sunday, July 21. They are 2-2 over their first four games. During the tournament in Las Vegas, Celtics fans got a closer look at recent draft additions Baylor Scheierman and Anton Watson. Neemias Queta, JD Davison and Jordan Walsh also participated in the event.

However, not every member of Boston’s Summer League roster stepped up to the plate. Some players have struggled to make an impact despite being given significant opportunities to showcase their improvements. On the other hand, some members of the Summer League roster have staked their claim and could get a closer look from the coaching staff during training camp.

In a recent episode of the “Big 3 NBA Podcast,” host A. Sherrod Blakely discussed which members of Boston’s summer league roster have seen their stock rise over the last couple of weeks with guest Noa Dalzell of Celtics Blog.

They also cover which players have hurt their chances of potentially earning playing time.

Which players have stood out at summer league?

Who have been the best players throughout Las Vegas Summer League?

The Boston Celtics wrapped up their summer league season on Sunday, July 21, with a 103-98 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston ended the tournament with a 2-3 record despite some strong showings from Anton Watson, Baylor Scheierman, Jaden Springer and Neemias Queta.

There were multiple standouts across summer league this season, with Reed Sheppard of the Houston Rockets arguably leading the way. With so much young talent on display throughout the tournament, it’s only fair to wonder where they all rank against each other, especially as you try to get a jump on a potential Rookie of the Year race ahead of the new season.

In a recent episode of the “How ‘Bout Them Celtics” podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance discuss the best performers throughout summer league. The hosts then place each player into tiers as they attempt to rank all of the main talents from the tournament.

Boston’s Neemias Queta on the easy decision to return to the Boston Celtics

He also got into Boston’s win vs. the Los Angeles Lakers

Boston Celtics reserve big man Neemias Queta has been kicking posteriors in the NBA’s 2024 Las Vegas Summer League, and recently sat down with the press to talk about his experiences there and decision to return to Boston in free agency.

Queta talked about going to free agency and the easy decision to re-sign with the Celtics on a long term contract. He also got into Boston’s win vs. the Los Angeles Lakers on this past Monday (July 15) night in Sin City action, scoring 20 points for the second straight game in Vegas that has seen the Portuguese center show out.

The folks over at the “CLNS Media Boston Sports Network” YouTube channel got it all on video for us; take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what Queta had to say.

Boston’s Neemias Queta is dominating Las Vegas Summer League

The Celtics are likely pleased with what they have seen from recently re-signed reserve big man Neemias Queta.

The Boston Celtics are likely pleased with what they have seen from recently re-signed reserve big man Neemias Queta in Las Vegas Summer League action. Most recently, in an 88-74 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, the Portuguese center put up a game-high 22 points with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks in just 25 minutes of floor time.

He shot well from the floor and the free throw line as well, respectively, hitting 7-of-10 attempts from the former, and 8-of-9 from the latter. To talk it over, the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, sat down for a recent episode.

What do we think about the Boston Celtics bringing back Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta?

Were these two the right men for the job, or did the Celtics err by not looking harder for free agency or trade possibilities?

What do we think about the Boston Celtics bringing back Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta? With news of star Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis being sidelined for at least the next five to six months as he recovers from the surgery to fix that weird injury he picked up in the 2024 NBA Finals, it is clear that Boston will need some big man depth.

But were these two the right men for the job, or did the Celtics err by not looking harder for free agency or trade possibilities? The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took a closer look on a recent episode.

Shams: Boston Celtics bring Neemias Queta back on multi-year deal

Boston still needs to work out a deal with reserve big man Xavier Tillman Sr. to return the frontcourt that helped them win the 2024 NBA title.

The Boston Celtics have taken another step to shore up their frontcourt rotation soon after getting news that star Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis would be out at least five to six months after getting surgery last week.

Just hours after news broke of the Celtics electing to re-sign backup big man Luke Kornet to a one-year deal, Boston is reportedly also bringing back reserve center Neemias Queta on a multi-year deal, per the Athletic’s Shams Charania. No details were made available at the time of the reporting, but it is likely for the league minimum with at least a partial guarantee for this coming season.

Boston still needs to work out a deal with reserve big man Xavier Tillman Sr. to return the frontcourt that helped them win the 2024 NBA title. But there is a chance the team goes in another direction should Tillman get a large offer sheet.

Conversely, Boston might also prefer to go in a different direction should the right free agent express interest at an agreeable number in terms of salary.

Boston Celtics pick up Sam Hauser’s team option for 2024-25, decline Neemias Queta’s

This does not mean that the Queta era in Boston is over, however.

The Boston Celtics have made some decisions about the future of their roster, with reports coming in that the Celtics have elected to pick up the team option on reserve forward Sam Hauser‘s contract, and have elected to not pick up the team option on backup big man Neemias Queta’s contract.

This does not mean that the Queta era in Boston is over, however, with MassLive’s Brian Robb reporting that “the door remains open for a potential return to Boston” should the Celtics’ needs arise and Queta unable to find himself a larger role for guaranteed money on another team.

Hauser’s final contract year will pay him $2.1 million for the 2024-25 season, and Boston and the Virginia alum are “expected to have extension negotiations after the window opens July 9,” writes the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

And while he couldn’t comment on potential deals in a recent press conference, Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens saying that the Celtics “want Hauser to be here for a long time” is a good indication a deal will get done.

Celtics’ Neemias Queta on becoming the NBA champion from Portugal

No minor accomplishment for a country who Queta is also the sole player in NBA history to call home.

Apart from veteran Boston Celtics combo guard Jrue Holiday, there were a lot of firsts this past Monday (June 17) night at TD Garden as the Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals when it comes to winning titles. And when it comes to deep reserve Celtics center Neemias Queta, there was a first for an entire nation.

The Portuguese big man became the first Portuguese player in league history to win a title — no minor accomplishment for a country who Queta is also the sole player in NBA history to call home. After Boston had secured Banner 18 and the party had begun, Queta talked to CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning about winning the NBA championship with the Celtics, and being the first player ever from Portugal to do so.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say.

Is Boston’s depth their secret weapon in search for an NBA championship?

The Boston Celtics depth is an under appreciated aspect of their current roster.

The Boston Celtics have arguably the best top-six rotation in the NBA. Their entire starting five could make a case for an All-Star selection. As such, Boston’s top-tier talent has been a consistent talking point throughout the season, especially as Joe Mazzulla’s team ran away with the Eastern Conference during the regular season.

However, on a recent episode of Kevin Garnett’s “KG Certified” podcast, he and Paul Pierce discussed whether Boston’s biggest weapon is actually the team’s depth. The Celtics have eight or nine players capable of making an impact in the postseason. Even their deep rotation players, such as Neemias Queta, could be relied upon if required.

The Celtics overcame the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinal.

They are now waiting to find out if they will face the New York Knicks or Indiana Pacers in the next round. Whoever they get, Mazzulla can be confident that his roster is deep enough and talented enough to withstand a tough series.

Which player will be the Boston Celtics’ toughest free agency decision?

We’d expect Kornet to command the biggest raise of the three, so it may end up being him.

Which player will be the Boston Celtics’ toughest free agency decision this coming 2024 NBA offseason? With a rapidly ballooning payroll thanks to the supermax contract extension of star Boston forward Jaylen Brown and fellow star wing Jayson Tatum’s supermax extension soon to follow (to say nothing about Jrue Holiday’s extension and a potential pending one for Derrick White), things could get out of Boston’s reach financially.

For Bleacher Report’s Andy Hughes, this means that the Celtics might need to find some cheaper solutions for their backup big men. “Luke Kornet, and … Xavier Tillman Sr., could present Boston with an either/or decision, as it may not be worthwhile to retain a pair of centers on a roster that already has Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford.”

Add in Neemias Queta, “whom the Celtics viewed as valuable enough to convert to a standard contract in April with a $2.2 million team option for 2024-25,” and one of them might have to go as a cap casualty.

If Boston does look to cut some costs next season, this does make sense, given all three have shown promise with different skill sets. We’d expect Kornet to command the biggest raise of the three, so it may end up being him.
