Four-star OL Grant Brix commits to Nebraska

One of the biggest commitments of the Matt Rhule era is in for the Huskers.

Nebraska has landed one of their top targets in the 2024 recruiting cycle as Logan, Iowa native Grant Brix has announced his commitment to the Cornhuskers.

Brix committed to the Huskers over Alabama, Kansas State, and Oklahoma. The Iowa native is one of the biggest commitments yet of the Matt Rhule era and is a monumental recruiting victory for the program.

The 6-foot-6, nearly 300-pound interior offensive lineman is ranked by all three major recruiting services as a three-star prospect and a top-100 prospect on both On3 and Rivals.

He made his announcement via his X account on Tuesday night.

“I am excited to announce I am a Cornhusker,” he said in his announcement. ” Although there were great things about all of my top three schools, I firmly believe in what is being built by Coach Rhule and his staff. I want to thank everyone who has helped me and made this process special. God bless and GBR!!”

Brix additionally told Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith, “It was just belief in Coach Rule and the program. That it’s going to get back to where everyone wants it to be.”

With Brix’s commitment, the Cornhuskers now hold 27 commitments in their 2024 recruiting class. The Huskers’ class is considered a top-25 recruiting class by 247Sports, On3, and Rivals.

Another Bellevue West football team member announced big news regarding Nebraska. Offensive tackle Jacob Arop revealed on Twitter that he received a preferred walk-on offer from the Huskers.

Arop visited Nebraska back in April but didn’t announce that he received any offers. This is only the second official Division I Arop’s received. His first offer was from Northern Iowa back in February.

MaxPreps lists Arop at 6-6 280 pounds, and he was previously listed as a defensive end and a tight end. He will also be a part of Bellevue West’s basketball, helping his team complete a perfect season this past March.

If Arop walks on at Nebraska, he will add to the list of Thunderbirds heading to Nebraska for the 2024 season. Notable recruits from Bellevue West are quarterback Danny Kaelin, wide receiver Dae’vonn Hall and wide receiver Isaiah McMorris.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team continues its recruiting by venturing to a neighboring state and offering a rising star. Jenica Lewis, a sophomore from Grimes, Iowa, announced on Twitter that she received an offer from the Huskers following a visit.

Lewis is entering her sophomore year at Johnston High School after coming off a stellar freshman year. Lewis led the Dragons finished the season with a 24-2 record and a state runner-up finish, falling to Pleasant Valley 59-56.

But even before entering high school, Lewis was being noticed by numerous schools for her performance on the court. By the time she reached high school, she had received nearly 20 offers from Division I schools. She can play almost any position on the court, as she lists herself as a point guard, shooting guard, and center.

There’s a fourth Willis McGahee and he’s headed to Nebraska

There’s a fourth Willis McGahee and he’s headed to Nebraska.

For years, Willis McGahee III ran through defenses on the gridiron, being a Heisman finalist in college and spending 10 years as an NFL running back. Two decades after his University of Miami career ended, his son Willis McGahee IV is approaching the start of his own collegiate journey.

McGahee IV, henceforth referred to as McGahee in this article, committed to Nebraska on Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker at Columbus High School (Miami, Fla.) is ranked as a three-star player on 247Sports and had 19 offers, according to the outlet.

As a junior at Columbus, McGahee had 50 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss and eight sacks, according to MaxPreps. He helped Columbus go 14-1 and win the Class 4M Florida High School Athletic Association championship as the Explorers finished No. 23 on the USA TODAY High School Sports Super 25 national rankings.

On3 reported that McGahee visited Nebraska in March and April and was on campus for the spring game. He spoke highly of the coaching staff led by head coach Matt Rhule.

“I liked how Coach Rhule addressed the team before practice started. He told them he knows practice won’t be perfect and that we welcome mistakes. That would’ve taken the edge off for me if that was my first practice. I was impressed with how the coaches were coaching. It’s the type of coaching style I prefer,” McGahee said to On3.

McGahee is the fourth Nebraska commit in the class of 2024, according to 247Sports. The Cornhuskers hope these commits are the start of a strong recruiting class, as neither of the last two classes have ranked in the top 30 nationally, per 247Sports.

Recruiting class of 2023 starting to take shape

Where do the Huskers stack up against the rest of the Big Ten?

Recruiting is an inexact science, and the current state of the Nebraska 2023 recruiting class is a perfect example of that. The Huskers currently have 15 commits for this year’s class, and the three primary recruiting services have very different opinions about how they view these commitments.

The rankings now are as follows.

Rivals: 33rd

On3: 29th

247Sports: 32th

Regarding Big Ten recruiting class rankings, the Huskers are positioned right near the middle of the conference.

Rivals: 6th out of 14

On3: 5th out of 14

247Sports: 6th out of 14

And Nebraska is not done. Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph and staff continue to remain aggressive on the recruiting trail, and once the hire of a new head coach is made, I expect to see things intensify. The signing day for the class of 2023 will take place on Wednesday, February 1st, 2023.

Look below at the Nebraska recruiting class of 2023, as well as the rankings of each commit through the major recruiting services.

Huskers offer 3-star RB from Illinois

The Nebraska Cornhuskers extended an offer to Andre Crews, a class of 2023 3-star running back/cornerback from Chicago Simeon High School in Illinois on Monday.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers extended an offer to Andre Crews, a class of 2023 3-star running back/cornerback from Chicago Simeon High School in Illinois on Monday.

Crews is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound back that is the 123rd-ranked running back and 44th-ranked overall recruit in Illinois by 247 Sports.

Nebraska is one of his more significant offers so far, but Crews has also received interest from Wisconsin, Kentucky, Air Force, Akron and a handful of FCS programs. The Huskers do not currently have a running back commit in their 2023 class.

So far this season, he has rushed 107 times for 1,408 yards and 24 touchdowns through eight games of the Illinois high school football season. Simeon, which is also the alma mater of current Husker wideout Alante Brown,  is 8-0 and looks to polish off an undefeated regular season with a Week 9 tilt against Lane Tech.

How 2023 Husker football commits are faring so far

If the Huskers can hang onto this group of commits, the future looks bright.

Despite the loss of former head coach Scott Frost, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have 13 commits in their upcoming recruiting class. That bunch have been putting up strong numbers so far with most states’ high school football seasons just past the midway point.

Leading the way in Nebraska’s class of 2023 are 4-star recruits Omarion Miller, a 6-foot-2 wide receiver out of North Caddo (Vivian, LA) High School and Riley van Poppel, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound interior offensive lineman from Argyle (Argyle, TX) High School.

Both are ranked in the top 30 nationally at their position, according to 247 Sports, but they are far from the only future Huskers making an impact. Obviously, the world of recruiting is never 100% stable, especially after the firing of a head coach, so Mickey Joseph and the rest of the Huskers coaching staff will need to have good conversations with their commits to ensure they plan to stay.

Each recruit’s highlights and stats (if applicable and available), are listed below:

Nebraska prep basketball “Player of the Year” to walk on for Cornhuskers

One of the top prep basketball stars in the state of Nebraska has decided to walk on for the Cornhuskers

A Nebraska high school point guard is forgoing several Division I scholarship offers and will walk-on for the Cornhuskers instead. Ashland-Greenwood Point Guard Cale Jacobsen chose the Huskers over Holy Cross and North Dakota scholarship offers. This season, the all-state guard led Ashland-Greenwood to a state title and set a state record by scoring 43 points in the state semifinals. Jacobsen will be joining a talented group of transfers and recruits for the upcoming 2022-23 season. Former Alabama forward Juwan Gary and former North Dakota State guard Sam Griesel will be joining Nebraska this year on the transfer front. While Ramel Lloyd, Jamarques Lawrence, and Blaise Keita have signed their letters of intent for the upcoming season. Jacobsen averaged 17.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. He was also named the Nebraska Basketball Coaches Association 2021-22 Player of the Year.
