Hoiberg becomes the second Husker head coach to win the prestigious award.

He’s brought innovative spacing and ball movement to the Big Ten and combined it this season with a feisty defense. He’s a player’s coach and a class act.”

Fred Hoiberg named National Coach of the Year

Nebraska’s basketball coach wins a prestigious honor after a successful season.

Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg received a prestigious honor on Thursday afternoon. He was named the 2024 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year.

The Jim Phelan Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I coach. The coach of the year is determined by a ten-member committee consisting of current and former head coaches and two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com.

Hoiberg received the award after guiding Nebraska to a 23-11 record and the program’s first birth in the NCAA Tournament in a decade. The team’s 23 wins were the most by a Nebraska team since the Huskers won a school-record 26 in the 1990-91 season.

He is the second head coach to win the honor. Tim Miles was named the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year in 2014.

This is the second year in a row that the Big Ten will have a coach win the honor. Last season, Northwestern’s Chris Collins was named the coach of the year.

Nebraska guard Jamarques Lawrence enters transfer portal

Nebraska’s roster for the 2024-25 season took a major hit on Monday as Jamarques Lawrence entered the transfer portal.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball program took its biggest blow yet this offseason; on Monday evening, guard Jamarques Lawrence decided to enter the transfer portal, according to reports.

He became the fifth Husker to enter the transfer portal, joining C.J. Wilcher, Blaise Keita, Eli Rice, and Ramel Lloyd Jr.

Lawrence only averaged 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 34 games this past season but was expected to see a bigger role next season. Lawrence averaged 23.6 minutes per game in his 34 games played this season, which was sixth on the team.

In two games against the Huskers this season, Storr had 38 points and 15 rebounds, including a 28-point effort on February 1, which led to an 80-72 win for the Huskers.
