BREAKING: Wisconsin top transfer target Frankie Fidler commits to a Big Ten rival

Wisconsin misses out on another top target:

Wisconsin basketball top transfer portal target Frankie Fidler committed to Big Ten rival Michigan State on Tuesday.

The Badgers appeared to be the leader for the former Omaha forward just a few weeks ago. Then circumstances changed, as Fidler’s high school teammate Chucky Hepburn entered the transfer portal and all but took the Badgers out of the running.

Fidler brings 2023-24 averages of 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 45% shooting and 35% from three to the Spartans. He is ranked by 247Sports as the transfer portal’s No. 69 overall player and No. 13 small forward.

He officially chooses Tom Izzo’s program over other finalists Wisconsin, Nebraska and Creighton.

Wisconsin must now go back to the drawing board with yet another top transfer target off the board. Greg Gard and his staff need a big splash during this cycle after losing three starters off the 2023-24 team: forward Tyler Wahl to graduation and guards Hepburn and A.J. Storr to the transfer portal.

Fidler would have been a replacement for Storr. Now, he will line up against the Badgers.

Michigan State basketball lands elite Omaha SF transfer Frankie Fidler

Tom Izzo makes a transfer portal splash, lands elite SF transfer

Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball have officially made a splash in the NCAA transfer portal. The Spartans have picked up the commitment of Frankie Fidler, an elite small forward transfer from Nebraska-Omaha.

Fidler is a 6’7″/200 pound wing, averaging 20.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the Mavericks last season. He is one of the top wing prospects in the portal.

Fidler will bring one year of eligibility to East Lansing, where he will surely slot in as the team’s starting small forward.

Wisconsin likely out of the running for one of the transfer portal’s top forwards

The Chucky Hepburn transfer news has more ramifications

Wisconsin basketball is likely no longer an option for top transfer portal forward Frankie Fidler.

That statement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise after Wisconsin star point guard Chucky Hepburn entered the transfer portal on Thursday. Hepburn was a substantial part of the recruiting pitch — as he and Fidler were high school teammates in Nebraska.

Wisconsin was among Fidler’s final four schools alongside Michigan State, Creighton and Nebraska. The former Omaha wing was scheduled to announce his commitment on Monday but ended up delaying the announcement. Then Hepburn entered the portal three days later. It isn’t hard to draw a connection between the two situations.

Fidler is 247Sports’ No. 64 overall transfer and No. 13 small forward. He’s coming off an exceptional 2023-24 season at Omaha, during which he averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 45% shooting and 35% from three.

The talented wing is reportedly now leaning toward Michigan State. Though given the nature of the transfer portal, things can change very quickly.

Head coach Greg Gard and his coaching staff must go back to the drawing board to find replacements for Hepburn, star wing A.J. Storr and veteran forward Tyler Wahl.

Omaha basketball transfer, MSU target Frankie Fidler delays commitment announcement

Frankie Fidler has delayed his commitment announcement that was expected on Monday morning:

Fans were expecting a decision from Omaha wing transfer Frankie Fidler on a local Omaha radio station Monday morning, but that decision has since been delayed.

Fidler is coming off of an official visit to Michigan State, where some are saying went very well, giving the wing a lot to think about.

The decision for Fidler is down to Creighton, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Michigan State, while a return to Omaha is not off of the table.

There is no timetable for a decision, but is expected to make a commitment this week.

Wisconsin basketball top transfer target delays commitment announcement

Not great news for the Badgers:

Wisconsin basketball top transfer portal target Frankie Fidler is delaying his commitment announcement.

The highly touted forward originally planned to join 1620 The Zone in Omaha, Nebraska, at 8 a.m. on Monday morning to announce his transfer destination. The Journal Sentinel’s Jeff Potrykus shared The Zone had noted he was delaying his decision.

This news is somewhat substantial. Fidler spent the weekend visiting Big Ten rival Michigan State. The Badgers are still in the running, along with the Spartans, Nebraska Cornhuskers and Creighton Bluejays. After Wisconsin seemed like a clear front-runner thanks to the relationship between Fidler and Badgers point guard Chucky Hepburn, this delay could signal a late push by a rival program.

Fidler averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 45% shooting and 35% from 3 as a junior at Omaha in 2023-24. He is one of the transfer portal’s best players and would be a terrific addition for any major program.

Wisconsin is in need of his talent on the wing after the departures of A.J. Storr and Tyler Wahl.

We may still hear his transfer decision soon, though the originally date seems to be out of the picture.

Report: Wisconsin top transfer portal target to announce commitment on Monday

The Badgers recently made Fidler’s final four schools along with Nebraska, Creighton and Michigan State.

The former Omaha forward is a big-ticket prospect for the teams still in the running. The 6’7″ forward averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 45% shooting and 35% from 3 as a junior at Omaha in 2023-24. He is 247Sports’ 48th-ranked transfer and seventh-ranked small forward in the portal.

Fidler played high school basketball with Wisconsin point guard Chucky Hepburn, making this connection an easy one to make. He’d seamlessly fill the vacant role left by star wing A.J. Storr and would be the dynamic shooter that the team currently lacks.

Wisconsin basketball a finalist to land one of the transfer portal’s top players

Wisconsin basketball a finalist to land one of the transfer portal’s top players

The Badgers made Fidler’s final four list alongside Nebraska, Creighton and Michigan State.

The top-ranked forward visited the Badgers last weekend and is one of the school’s top portal targets. He played high school basketball with star point guard Chucky Hepburn, making the connection an easy one to establish.

The former Omaha forward averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 45% shooting and 35% from 3 as a junior in 2023-24. He is 247Sports’ 36th-ranked transfer and fourth-ranked power forward in the portal.

Wisconsin will have to fend off his in-state school, Nebraska; a top program, Creighton; and a blue blood, Michigan State, to land the popular transfer.

The Badgers have starter minutes to offer after the departures of Tyler Wahl and A.J. Storr. Fidler would fit in seamlessly as a sharpshooter and dependable wing scorer in Wisconsin’s balanced offensive attack.
