Rhema Otabor sets collegiate record in javelin with her second-straight championship

For the second year in a row, a Nebraska track and field athlete has won the national championship in the javelin.

For the second year in a row, a Nebraska track and field athlete has won the national championship in the javelin. This time, however, they also set a new collegiate record.

Rhema Otabor secured her second-consecutive NCAA title on Thursday night, launching the javelin 210 feet, 7 inches (64.19 meters), a record-breaking mark. That distance broke the collegiate record, the NCAA Championship meet record, the Nebraska school record, and the Bahamian record.

With the title, Otabor closes out her collegiate career as a three-time First-Team All-American, a two-time NCAA Champion, and a two-time Big Ten Champion. Otabor is also the first Husker to win back-to-back titles since 2003-04.

Nebraska sent three female throwers to nationals in the javelin along with Otabor. Eniko Sara added to the Huskers javelin success, tossing a personal-best 182 feet, 7 inches (55.66 meters) to finish fifth, earning First-Team All-America honors at her first-career NCAA Championship meet. This is also the fifth-best javelin mark in school history.

Mirta Kulisic finished 15th with a distance of 170 feet (51.82 meters), and Emanuela Casadei took 19th place with a throw of 164 feet, 10 inches (50.24 meters).

Badgers Volleyball team shatters TV record

Badgers keep setting records

The Badgers women’s volleyball (20-1) defeated Minnesota (10-10) on Sunday 3-0, breaking a television viewership record in the process. The matchup was live on Fox immediately after NFL action, a first for women’s volleyball.

After the Badgers were a part of a record-setting contest (612K viewers) with Nebraska on Big Ten Network on Oct. 21, they more than doubled it, reeling in 1.66 million viewers on Sunday.

The new record even surpassed the total amount of viewers from the 2021 National Championship win for Wisconsin, which has a total of 1.20M watching.

Wisconsin is the number two ranked team in the nation and they’ll square off with Nebraska again in a few weeks on Nov. 24 at the UW Field House.

WATCH: Voice of Badgers Volleyball talks about record-setting night

Voice of Badgers volleyball highlights special feat

The Wisconsin women’s volleyball team faced Marquette at Fiserv Forum on Wednesday night and set a record with over 17,000 fans in attendance. Jon Arias, the play-by-play voice of the Badgers talked about the experience on his podcast “Joncast Podcast”.

He talked about the draw that the Badgers have had this year, two years removed from their program’s first ever National Championship win in 2021. Kelly Sheffield’s squad help set an attendance record on the road at Arkansas earlier this year.

On top of those feats, it certainly helps that Wisconsin is the number one ranked team in the country as well as a perfect 8-0 on the young 2023 campaign.

NCAA Women’s Golf Championship: Stanford sets NCAA record, USC’s Catherine Park ties another and more from Saturday’s second round

Here’s what you need to know from the second round of the Women’s NCAA Championship.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — It was a birdie barrage Saturday morning at Grayhawk Golf Club. And teams who weren’t making any were left behind.

The second round of the 2023 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship teed off Saturday to clear skies, virtually no wind and perfect scoring conditions. And teams like Stanford, South Carolina and Texas took advantage. The morning scoring average was 72.39, more than two shots lower than Friday.

In the afternoon? The course played tough. Only one team (Clemson) finished under par in the afternoon wave.

However, the round Stanford put together set an NCAA record for lowest round in championship history. Not bad for the top-seeded team and defending NCAA champions.

Yet it’s not the Cardinal in front with 36 holes to go, it’s the second-seeded team (and No. 1 team in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings).

Is anyone topping this NCAA record currently held by Auburn?

A quarterback coming close to this NCAA record seems unlikely.

There are many obscure and often impossible NCAA Football records in the books. One of those records belongs to Auburn, and, luckily, they are on the right side of this interesting note in college football history.

On Nov. 1, 1969, Auburn hosted Florida with the goal of knocking off the No. 7 Gators. Auburn was successful in reaching that objective thanks in part to Florida quarterback John Reaves throwing an NCAA record nine interceptions.

Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire breaks down amazing stat that Auburn currently owns:

Hearing that a quarterback threw nine interceptions in a single game is almost unheard of. This would be the one record on our list that you wouldn’t want any part of. At some point, a head coach would either stick to running the football or put in the backup. However, in 1969 Florida stuck with quarterback John Reaves as he threw nine picks in a single game, it would have been 10 if a penalty didn’t negate it. It helped No. 17 Auburn upset No. 7 Florida on this day, 38-12.

WATCH: Steph Curry congratulates Taylor Robertson on setting NCAA all-time mark

After breaking the NCAA’s all-time three-point record, Taylor Robertson received a congratulatory message from Golden State great Steph Curry.

On Saturday in Ames, Taylor Robertson became the NCAA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made. It was a momentous occasion for the fifth-year senior who now has 502 in her career.

Over the course of her career, she’s made three-pointers at a 44% clip. It’s a record that even impressed Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry, arguably the greatest three-point shooter of all-time, and Robertson’s idol.

“Hey, what’s up, Taylor just wanted to say congratulations on breaking the all-time NCAA Women’s Division One Three point record of 498 threes,” Curry shared via video. “Now, I know you’re gonna keep adding to that number and probably make it hopefully something that will never be broken. But to go from making eight threes in your first college game against Western Kentucky to now 498, that is an amazing, amazing accomplishment.

“I only made 414 threes in college, so you’ve been had me beat. But this is an amazing accomplishment for you. And not only doing 498 but shooting 44% in your career while accomplishing that level of volume, that is unbelievable.

“And I just want to say congratulations be proud of yourself. I know you and your team are primed for an amazing tournament run, so finish the season strong but congratulations on this record. You earned it.”

Robertson will indeed add to her record. She averaged 111.25 made threes in the first four years of her Oklahoma Sooners career, including the COVID-shortened 2020-2021 season. This year, she’s already at 57 made threes through 20 games.

Robertson’s teammates then revealed that she’s been invited to meet Steph Curry at a game as well.

It’s an incredible feat for the sharp-shooter who has played a key role in setting up the Sooners’ offense this season.

Social Media reacts to Nebraska Volleyball’s win over Creighton

The Huskers improve to 6-0 with the victory.

The No. 2 ranked University of Nebraska Volleyball team defeated Creighton in five sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 17-25, 15-9) in front of 15,797 fans at the CHI Health Center on Wednesday night. That number is a new NCAA attendance record for a regular-season volleyball match surpassing the previous record of 14,022, which Nebraska and Creighton had previously set in 2018.

With the win, Nebraska improves to 6-0 on the season and will prepare for a Saturday afternoon matchup against Long Beach State at the Devaney Center with a 3:00 pm start time. The Huskers will not start conference play until September 23rd, when they host Michigan State in Lincoln. Nebraska is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation behind the Texas Longhorns.

Below is a collection of social media reaction to this evenings match.

Texas vs Baylor: Throwback Thursday to 2009’s record-tying matchup

Beating Baylor was normal for UT under Brown. It was an important day because Colt McCoy tied the NCAA record for wins as a starting QB.

[jwplayer CcVChl0T-er0jUifI]

Entering 2009’s Texas vs Baylor matchup, Mack Brown had never lost to the Bears, enduring an 11 game winning streak. When the game took place in Waco, the Longhorns were winning by an average of 48.0 points.

That season would be no different, as the eventual Big 12 champions embarrassed the hosts, 47-14. All 14 of Baylor’s points were scored in the latter half of the fourth quarter after the backups were already in.

Winning the game itself was nothing special. The 2009 Texas team was punishing teams week in and week out. Outside of the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma, no regular-season game was decided by less than 10 points.

What made it an important day was Colt McCoy tying the NCAA record for the most wins as a starting quarterback. Since the day McCoy started as a true freshman in 2006, all he did was win. After the Baylor game, he possessed a 42-7 record.

Winning four out of four games against the Bears in his career, Oklahoma State is the only other school to suffer the same fate. McCoy dominated Baylor every single year, throwing for 14 touchdowns over the four years.

As for the game itself, McCoy finished with 181 passing yards and two touchdowns on 23 of 34 passing. He connected with his roommate and go to target Jordan Shipley six times for 46 yards and both touchdowns.

Here are the game highlights:

McCoy would go on to win three more games in the 2009 season to finish to set the record for the most NCAA wins as a starting quarterback with 45. It would stand for two seasons until Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore won 50 games and only lost three.
