Michigan’s Fab Five reunited for the first time since their playing days and fans absolutely loved it

Michigan was never going to lose with the Fab Five in the building.

It is not often you see former Michigan stars Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson in the same room.

After years apart from one another, the former college basketball stars reunited on Martin Luther King Day at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. But with Howard coaching for Michigan and his four other former teammates on the sidelines, the group reunited for a conference victory over rival Ohio State.

The historic class, four of whom were McDonald’s All-Americans in high school, was honored for their contribution to the program and to the sport.

It was particularly heartwarming to see Webber and Rose reunited after the two former NBA players long had an estranged relationship with each other (via 247 Sports):

“Everybody had their own relationship. It’s no secret Jalen and I had to come together, and we have. Much earlier — it’s not about just today. It had to happen naturally,” Webber said.

“We both had to be in a place of reconciliation, have to be in a place of forgiveness. I can’t speak for Jalen, but that’s where I was. Obviously he was there too. It’s really cool to be here but it’s better to be here as family.”

Webber added that he would have waited “100 years” for a reunion if that was how long it took. He has given motivational speeches to Michigan’s team since Howard took over as head coach.

Rose, who was a longtime ESPN and ABC analyst after his professional playing career, joined FOX’s broadcast to discuss the occasion.

While the reunion was understated and quiet, it was great to see these five standouts in the same building yet again.

Here is how fans reacted when they saw the legendary group together for the first time since the 1990s:

The Terrapins (22-4, 12-3) best player is senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr., who leads the team with 16.7 points per game. Sophomore forward Jalen Smith is also averaging 15.4 PPG and has a team-leading 10.5 rebounds a game. Aaron Wiggins, a sophomore guard, is averaging double digits with 10.1 PPG. It’s stats like that which make Maryland so tough to guard. A trio of players can beat you on any given night. In the team’s last game against Northwestern, a 76-67 win, four different players scored in double digits. Smith arguably had his best game of the season, scoring 22 points and collecting 19 rebounds.

Ohio State (17-9, 7-8) may be under .500 on the road this season, but the team has a sizable advantage at home, coming into the game with a 13-2 record. The Buckeyes were unable to pick up a win on the road against No. 20 Iowa on Thursday. In the 85-76 loss, four players scored in double digits, including EJ Liddell, who tallied 17 points and collected eight rebounds. Before the loss to Iowa, Ohio State had won five of six games.

Badgers guard Brad Davidson has been suspended for one game after committing a flagrant foul in the team’s recent loss to Iowa. Combine that with news that Kobe King is leaving the program and plans to transfer, bench players will have to step into roles they aren’t accustomed to since both were starters. The Badgers (12-9, 5-5) were unable to win on the road in Iowa, losing 68-62 on Monday. The team was led by D’Mitrik Trice, who had 16 points and nine rebounds, along with six assists.

After an embarrassing 29-point loss to Purdue just a few weeks ago, Michigan State (16-5, 8-2) has rebounded and gone 3-1 since then and is No. 1 in the Big Ten standings. All of the wins were by double digits. In Wednesday’s game against Northwestern, Michigan State demolished the Wildcats by a final score of 79-50. While the Spartans went into halftime up by 11 points, the second half is when the team really turned it on, outscoring Northwestern by 18 points. The team was led by Cassius Winston, who had 18 points, along with two other players that scored in double digits.

No. 8 Oregon (14-4, 3-2) had a three-game win streak snapped when it lost to Washington State on the road on Thursday. The Ducks held a three-point lead at halftime but were outscored by 14 points in the second half for a 72-61 loss. Payton Pritchard led the Ducks with 22 points. Washington State went 11-for-21 from three-point range. The Ducks will need to do a better job of defending the perimeter to split their Washington road trip.

Washington (12-6, 2-3) got a 64-56 home win over Oregon State on Thursday. The win was Washington’s second straight home victory in conference play. Washington never trailed in the win over the Beavers, as the Huskies defense carried them to victory. The team held Oregon State to 39 percent shooting and just two threes for the game. Against a more talented Oregon team, Washington’s defense will have to come together against a tougher offensive opponent if it wants a win.
