Odds to win the ACC in 2022, per Tipico Sportsbook

As the college football season approaches, it’s time to take a look at which teams have the best odds to win the ACC.

The start of the 2022 college football season is just under two months away, which means the time to place future bets on teams to win the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is upon us.

For the first time since 2014, there was a new ACC champion in the Pittsburgh Panthers last season after Clemson was crowned the king of the conference for the previous six years. Last year was also the first time since 2014 that the Tigers didn’t win the Atlantic Division, as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons ultimately secured that accomplishment.

While Clemson failed to return to Charlotte, North Carolina, last season to compete for the ACC title, the head coach Dabo Swinney and the Tigers return a loaded group of talent in 2022 that gives them the fourth-best odds to win the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship this upcoming season.

Even with the fourth-best odds to win the CFP, winning the ACC won’t be an easy feat, and many teams will fight until the very end for the conference title.

With that being said, let’s look at each team’s odds of winning the 2022 ACC championship courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook. The teams are listed in Tipico’s order.

Ranking ACC teams by returning production

Clemson returns over 70 percent of its production from last season, but how do the Tigers stack up against the rest of the ACC?

It can be difficult at times to predict which college football teams will have tremendous success each season, but one indication to look for is the players that return to their respective programs.

Whether it be a fifth-year senior linebacker or a rising junior quarterback, having experienced players return for another season can give certain teams an edge over others that lose talent to the NFL draft, transfer portal or eligibility rules.

To properly examine the roster turnover ahead of the 2022 season, ESPN’s Bill Connelly recently broke down each FBS team’s returning production. Compared to the other conferences, the ACC is the third-highest in terms of average returning production at 66.5%.

As for Clemson, most of its offensive starters from last season will return this fall. The Tigers will lose, however, a lot of defensive production in the secondary with Andrew Booth Jr., Mario Goodrich and Nolan Turner departing for the NFL. Still, considering the team’s talent on both sides of the ball, Clemson’s ranking may be higher than some expect.

With that being said, here is where each ACC team ranks.

Multiple predictions favor Oklahoma to land four-star NC running back Daylan Smothers

With a number of recruiting predictions coming in, it looks like the Oklahoma Sooners are closing in on a commitment from 2023 4-star RB Daylan Smothers.

If you blinked, you might’ve missed it. In a whirlwind of events that started the day before, the Oklahoma Sooners look to be closing in on their second running back commit for the class of 2023. While four-star Kalib Hicks is already committed, the Sooners and specifically running backs coach DeMarco Murray aren’t done yet. Four-star running back Daylan Smothers recently dropped a top four featuring Oklahoma, Florida State, NC State, and Alabama.

A little over 24 hours later a slew of crystal ball predictions came in across a span of an hour that swung the momentum heavily in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Smothers’ received four crystal balls and a Rivals forecast from three Oklahoma insiders and two FSU insiders. Parker Thune and Brandon Drumm of OUInsider and Zach Blostein and Brendan Sonnone of Noles247 each issued crystal ball predictions with a confidence level of six or better. Josh McCuistion of SoonersScoop put in a Rivals Futurecast in favor of Oklahoma as well.

24 hours from the time his top 4 was released Smothers looks like he could be on commitment watch at any time now with the overwhelming momentum favoring the guys in Crimson & Cream.

Smothers is an explosive all-purpose back out of West Charlotte High School and dominates with his physical running but has another gear to separate in and out of traffic as well. Smothers originally played for Chambers High School which most recently produced Jeremiah Hall. After seeing him at a Rivals camp in North Carolina in early March, the Sooners offered Smothers and the race was on.

It looks like that race may be coming to an end shortly and a commitment to Oklahoma would all but solidify the Sooners’ running back recruitment efforts for the 2023 class.

Clemson vs. NC State listed in CBS Sports’ top revenge games of 2022

After falling to the Wolfpack last season, Clemson has a chance to exact revenge at home when the two teams face off in a much-anticipated battle in October this season.

Clemson has a chance to exact revenge against an ACC team in 2022.

Following last season’s double-overtime defeat to NC State, the Tigers will host the Wolfpack in Memorial Stadium on Oct. 1. In the rematch, head coach Dabo Swinney and his team will have the chance to begin a new winning streak against NC State after winning eight straight matchups dating back to 2012.

According to CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson, NC State at Clemson is the fourth-best revenge game of the 2022 college football season, behind Texas A&M at Alabama, Michigan at Ohio State and Oklahoma State at Oklahoma.

Here’s what Patterson had to say about Clemson’s rematch with NC State in 2022.

The second of three losses in Clemson’s “down year” of 10-3 in 2021, NC State was able to make it clear early in the season that the ACC was wide open with the Wolfpack’s 27-21 double overtime thriller. The Tigers’ sterling reputation as the kings of the conference was already shaky after totaling just two offensive touchdowns in its first two games against FBS opponents, and NC State was poised for a breakthrough in the series after a couple close calls across an eight-game losing streak. Now Clemson’s taking aim at the Wolfpack and the rest of the conference as they look to make a return to the ACC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff, but neither of those goals are going to be as feasible if the Tigers don’t get revenge against the Wolfpack in early October.

Although NC State ended Clemson’s winning streak last season, the Wolfpack haven’t defeated the Tigers in Memorial Stadium since 2002 and are 11-27 all-time on the road against them.

In last season’s loss to NC State, Clemson fell 27-21, a game in which the Tigers’ offense struggled to move the ball. Clemson had 214 total yards and 10 first downs and was 2-for-11 on third down. To make matters worse for the Tigers, running back Will Shipley and defensive tackle Bryan Bresee went down with injuries that forced them out of the game.

Will Clemson be upset in Death Valley this season?

Clemson has won 34 consecutive games at Memorial Stadium, but one analyst believes an ACC team could upset the Tigers this upcoming season.

Coming off a 10-3 season last year, Clemson will host seven games at Memorial Stadium in 2022, and one analyst believes the Tigers could be on home-upset watch in a particular matchup.

Most notably, Clemson will host NC State, Miami and South Carolina. The Tigers have won 34 consecutive games at Memorial Stadium, but in his latest bold predictions post, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford believes that the streak could end when the two teams play on October 1.

Here’s what Crawford said could happen to Clemson in 2022.

NC State Ends Clemson’s Streak, But Fails In ACC Quest

College Football Playoff hopeful NC State will fail in its quest to win the ACC Championship Game this season, but Wolfpack fans will be thinking final four — and rightfully so — after snapping Clemson’s 34-game home winning streak Oct. 1. The Tigers haven’t lost at Memorial Stadium since 2016, the longest active home winning steak in college football. NC State broke the hex against Clemson last season with an overtime win in Raleigh and are arguably the Tigers’ toughest opponent this fall given what the Wolfpack are bringing back after a nine-win campaign. After five weeks and this win, NC State will be ranked inside the top 10 nationally.

The week before hosting NC State, Clemson will have to travel to last year’s Atlantic Division winner, Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons were 11-3 last season, so having to play NC State coming off that game is no easy feat.

Although Clemson struggled against the Wolfpack last year, history is on the Tigers’ side. Before Clemson’s loss in 2021, the Tigers had won eight straight matchups against NC State. Playing at home bodes even better for Clemson, as the last time NC State defeated the Tigers in Memorial Stadium was in 2002.

In last season’s matchup with NC State, Clemson ultimately fell to 27-21, a game in which the Tigers’ offense struggled to move the ball. Clemson had 214 total yards and 10 first downs and was 2-for-11 on third down. The offense returns 10 starters from last season and is expected to be healthier, so coupled with a home crowd, it should produce more than 21 points in October.

Longest active home winning streaks in college football

What college football teams have won the most consecutive games at home? Three teams are ahead of Georgia.

College football fans love to see their teams win at home. Home wins just mean a little bit more. The best teams in the country don’t lost at home very often.

In fact, the last national champion to lose at home was the 2016 Clemson Tigers. The Tigers fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers in Nov. 2016 and have not lost at home since. Every national championship since then has finished the season undefeated at home.

Georgia, Alabama, Clemson and LSU represent the recent national champions to go undefeated at home. Not all of the college football teams with the longest active home winning streaks are national championship contenders.

A dozen Power Five teams in the country have won at least seven consecutive home games.

Which Power Five teams have the longest active home winning streaks in college football?

Sooners latest offer goes out to four-star NC running back Daylan Smothers

Oklahoma offers 2023 four-star running back Daylan Smothers out of North Carolina.

The Sooners don’t have many players from North Carolina on their roster, but they may be looking to change that as they continue their quest to establish recruiting roots in the Southeast. Their latest offer goes out to Charlotte, NC where they offered four-star running back Daylan Smothers.

Smothers plays at Chambers High School where he’s been a part of two 4A state champions in the last three years. As part of the 2023 class, Smothers is also being recruited by Penn State, Florida State, Tennessee, and the NC State Wolfpack.

Smothers shows excellent patience and vision, near-flawless start and stop ability, and a willingness to run behind his pads and fight for extra yards. The Sooners may be late to the party but Smothers is a rising prospect and they currently don’t have a running back committed for 2023.

Brent Venables, Jeff Lebby, and DeMarco Murray were likely in attendance for the Rivals Camp held in Charlotte where Smothers won the running back MVP award so they were able to see Smothers up close and personal before extending an offer to him.

Smothers also runs track when not in football season where he ran an 11.58 100m as a freshman. The Sooners will try and make up some ground with Smothers over the coming months and look to get a running back on board after landing two in 2022.

ESPN this week published a list of 10 games that will shape the College Football Playoff next season, giving a look at the games that will have the most impact on the CFP (subscription required).

Senior Writer Heather Dinich, who covers the CFP for ESPN, ranked the top 10 games that will have the biggest influence on the selection committee’s final top four, in order from the greatest impact to the least.

One of Clemson’s games appeared on Dinich’s list, with the Tigers’ home contest against NC State on Oct. 1 checking in at No. 5.

Here’s what Dinich wrote about how the CFP Committee will evaluate that game, from a Clemson perspective:

Clemson is no longer a given as the ACC’s best team, so this is a critical game for the Tigers, too. Pitt won the 2021 conference title, and NC State should be a preseason favorite this fall with 19 starters returning. Clemson will have home-field advantage against NC State one week after a tricky trip to Wake Forest. Clemson’s toughest game is Nov. 5 at Notre Dame, and it ends the regular season as always, against rival South Carolina. Coach Shane Beamer has the program trending upward. Clemson’s strength of schedule won’t be much of a factor in the committee meeting room if the Tigers win the ACC and beat Notre Dame and South Carolina along the way. They’ll either need to knock off NC State or get some help along the way.
