Report: ABC/ESPN in billion-dollar battle with NBC for ‘Sunday Night Football’

ESPN/ABC are in a rich — rich — battle with NBC for rights to ‘Sunday Night Football’

The stakes are high and the battle is pitched as NFL rights come up at the negotiating table. The New York Post is reporting NBC is in a major fight as it hopes to keep the diamond that is “Sunday Night Football.”

NBC has been pushing SNF for its 15th anniversary of acquiring the rights to the game that completes the Sunday schedule. The Peacock is going to have to dig way deep if it wants to continue having the contests once current deals expire.

Per The Post:

A billion-dollar battle for “Sunday Night Football” is emerging between incumbent NBC and Disney/ABC/ESPN as the NFL moves toward agreements on its new TV deals that could be completed by the end of the year, The Post has learned.

It has been known for a long time that Disney/ABC/ESPN would be very aggressive for more NFL, the most valuable programming in television. As far back as early 2019, there was buzz about ABC wanting a Super Bowl.

However, according to sources, it is more than that as the pitch Disney is making to the NFL is that it currently pays the most so it deserves the best prime-time regular-season schedule.

On top of that, according to officials familiar with the negotiations, Disney/ABC/ESPN wants to acquire two separate NFL packages.

At the moment, ESPN spends $2 billion per year for an inferior Monday Night schedule and no Super Bowls, while NBC writes a check for a mere $950 million for Sunday Night, which includes flexible scheduling.

The report suggests if SNF moved from NBC, it would turn up on ABC rather than ESPN, In such a scenario, NBC would still be in play for Monday or Thursday night action. Both Disney and NBC could try for Fox and CBS’ Sunday afternoon packages.

ESPN’s current “Monday Night Football” deal concludes after next season, while NBC, CBS and FOX’s NFL TV contracts will be completed following the 2022-23 Super Bowl.

College GameDay Coming to South Bend for Notre Dame-Clemson

No Trevor Lawrence doesn’t mean no national interest when Notre Dame welcomes Clemson to South Bend.

No Trevor Lawrence doesn’t mean no national interest when Notre Dame welcomes Clemson to South Bend. In fact, ESPN has decided to give the game the highest honor it can bestow. That’s right. College GameDay will broadcast from South Bend ahead of kickoff.

During ESPN’s coverage, it showed a graphic that put this contest at the top of a list of games this season that have College Football Playoff implications. The Tigers might be able to afford to drop this game and still sneak into the bracket, but this is it for the Irish. If they can’t win this, it likely will take a miracle for them to get back into consideration for the playoff. So with or without Lawrence, ESPN decided it simply couldn’t ignore this game.

The hype building up to this game will be unreal, and it only makes sense that this be the culmination of it all. NBC might be covering the actual game, but ESPN just gave itself a nice piece of the ratings pie. And whether the Irish win or lose, the national spotlight will be a lot of fun.

Notre Dame vs. Louisville: Second-Quarter Analysis

Mike Tirico said it best on the NBC broadcast: “One team goes [into halftime] with the lead, the other goes in feeling good.”

Mike Tirico said it best on the NBC broadcast: “One team goes [into halftime] with the lead, the other goes in feeling good.”

For the second quarter in a row, Notre Dame is having trouble shaking off Louisville’s defense. Like the first 15 minutes, the offense kept the ball for a long time and had little to show for it. But also just like last time, they’ll gladly take a 6-0 lead as the clock hits zero. Still, Brian Kelly and Tommy Rees will have one heck of a time talking to their guys.

The saving grace is that the Irish remained dominant on defense, so it’s not like Louisville has had much success with the ball either. The Cardinals also have hurt themselves with penalties. Without those, we could be talking about a different game right now. Credit also goes to punter Ryan Harwell for giving the Irish tough field position whenever his own offense stalled out.

The big issue for Notre Dame seems to be the Cardinals’ secondary. On several occasions, the Irish’s receivers have tried to get open, but to no avail. That’s made life more difficult for Ian Book, who’s had to wait so long to make decisions that he finds himself getting wrapped up. A lot of tactical adjustments will need to be made, especially after a failed fake field goal punctuated a 14-play drive that lasted nearly seven-and-a-half minutes, which would have led to the Cardinals getting on the scoreboard but for little time left and a missed 52-yard field goal from James Turner at the halftime gun.

Notre Dame Dominates USF: 5 Takeaways

Notre Dame dominated South Florida 52-0 on Saturday. Here are five quick takeaways from the blowout victory that moved the Irish to 2-0.

Perhaps it was last week’s slow start against Duke and maybe some of it had to do with what happened against South Florida back in 2011 but it didn’t feel like there was a ton of confidence in the ability of the Irish to entirely dominate going into Saturday’s game.

Then kickoff happened and Notre Dame dominated in every part of the game for the next 60 minutes in their — obliteration of South Florida that puts the Irish at 2-0 for the third straight season.

It wasn’t the most compelling of games as the only thing all that interesting in the final two frames was if Notre Dame could keep the shutout in tact.

With that said here are five takeaways from the victory.

Inside em, outside em…through them, over them, whatever you wanted to do to them….

Notre Dame TV Ratings Huge vs. Duke

When Notre Dame hosted Duke last weekend it was the highest viewership for an Irish afternoon opener in 14 years. Details here!

You might not look at Duke as being a massive matchup on the football field but the nation saw it as the most compelling college football game last Saturday as the Notre Dame opener attracted 4.371 million viewers to the NBC telecast.

It was the most-viewed Notre Dame afternoon home opener since the Irish last welcomed Penn State to South Bend way back in 2006.  It’s also the most-viewed Notre Dame home contest since the Fighting Irish battled Michigan in primetime to kickoff the 2018 season.

Let’s not get it confused as there weren’t a plethora of big-time matchups across college football last weekend and the Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC aren’t yet playing, but the 4.371 million viewers are the most to watch any college football game so far in the early parts of the unique 2020 season.

Notre Dame football: Injury updates for Thursday, Sept. 17

Who will be back and who remains out for Notre Dame this Saturday versus South Florida?

When Notre Dame suits up to host South Florida on Saturday we know they’ll officially be without graduate-transfer Ben Skowronek on the receiver depth chart as Brian Kelly officially ruled him out during media availability on Thursday.

Skowronek is nursing a hamstring injury he sustained in the season-opening win over Duke and won’t be available Saturday according to Kelly.

Kelly also gave the latest on star safety Kyle Hamilton, who he called day-to-day.  Kelly said that Hamilton is in a PPT program (Prayers and Personal Thoughts) after suffering an ankle injury against Duke that looked a lot more severe than it seems to have wound up being.

Other injury news for the Fighting Irish featured speedster Braden Lenzy who had a hamstring flare up and keep him out against Duke.  Kelly stated that Lenzy “looked good after practice”.

And finally wide receiver Kevin Austin who broke his foot early in training camp has progressed far enough to be out of a boot.  His six week scan showed “good signs” he’s now starting to run. No estimate on a return to game action was given.

Notre Dame kicks off their second game of the season against South Florida at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday and will showed on USA as NBC will be showing coverage of the third round of the US Open.

Notre Dame Football: Flutie out of NBC booth, Hall of Fame coach in

Doug Flutie is out of the booth for Notre Dame games on NBC this fall and an NFL Hall of Fame coach is in

Notre Dame fans will almost unanimously be thrilled with the news out on Tuesday that Doug Flutie will no longer call Notre Dame football games this fall on NBC.

If that’s not good enough on it’s own, Flutie, who to put it nicely, never left an impact in the booth, will be replaced by Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and former Super Bowl champion, Tony Dungy.

Dungy has worked on NBC’s studio crew for Sunday Night Football for years and now gets a chance to take his talents to game action on a weekly basis this fall.

As for play-by-play, Mike Tirico stays on that duty while sideline reporter Kathryn Tappen is back for another year.

Notre Dame alum Jac Collinsworth will host the NBC Sports pre-game, halftime and post-game shows and for select games will be joined by Flutie.

Notre Dame plays six home games in 2020, five of which will be broadcast on NBC.  The September 19 game against South Florida will air on USA.

This marks the 30th consecutive year of Notre Dame home football games airing on NBC.
