Warriors All-Star Rewind: Klay Thompson wins 2016 3-point contest

Rewind back to the 2016 NBA All-Star Weekend where Golden State Warriors All-Star Klay Thompson won his first 3-Point contest.

Following the 2014-15 season where the Golden State Warriors won the NBA Finals and Stephen Curry won the NBA MVP trophy, 2015-16 was nothing short of continued success for the franchise. The Warriors won the NBA Finals again, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second consecutive year, and Steph Curry, again, won the NBA MVP award for the second consecutive year.

But that wasn’t the only parallel between the two seasons. A Warriors player won the 3-point contest once again but this time, it was Klay Thompson, not Steph Curry.

Thompson, who lost in the final round to Curry in 2015, came back for revenge and there’s nothing sweeter than taking out Curry in the final round yourself, which is exactly what Klay did in 2016.

The final round consisted of Klay, Steph, and Suns rookie Devin Booker. Following Curry dropping 23 points, Klay stepped up to the plate and scored 27, mirroring the clinching final round that Curry had just the year before, to knock off his teammate to win take home the trophy.

Klay winning in 2016 marked the first time that teammates have won the 3-point contest in back-to-back years, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Warriors All-Star Rewind: Steph Curry wins 2015 3-point contest

Rewind back to the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend where Golden State Warriors All-Star Steph Curry won his first 3-Point contest.

The year of 2015 was truly the coming out party for not only Steph Curry but the Golden State Warriors as a franchise. Curry won his first MVP award and the Warriors were on the brink of their first of five consecutive NBA Finals appearances, bringing the trophy home three times.

But that the MVP award and Larry O’Brien trophy weren’t the only hardware that Curry took home that year. Most importantly, Curry won the 2015 Foot Locker 3-Point Contest during All-Star Weekend.

To bring home the trophy, Steph had to outshoot the likes of Cavaliers All-Star Kyrie Irving and his Warriors teammate Klay Thompson. In the final round of the contest, Curry put on an absolute shooting clinic, scoring 27 points, including making 13 shots in a row at one point.

Other participants in the 3-point contest included Wesley Matthews, Kyle Korver, Marco Belinelli, J.J. Redick, and James Harden.

That was Curry’s first time winning the contest in his fourth time as a participant. Since then, he’s participated four more times, yet 2015 remains his only victory.

Curry will go for his second victory in the 3-point contest tomorrow night in Atlanta prior to the All-Star Game.
