The top 24 rookie ratings in NBA 2K since NBA 2K10, with Victor Wembanyama at No. 1 overall

Wembanyama is already making history in the video game world.

It isn’t easy to determine a rating for a rookie who hasn’t played in the NBA, but rookie superstar Victor Wembanyama is already breaking the mold.

We took a look at how Wembanyama compares to every other rookie in the video game for the past decade or so. We chose the top-24 players because it’s NBA 2K24 and Kobe Bryant, who wore No. 24, is on the cover.

Using the HoopsHype database, we were able to sort through every rookie rating in NBA 2K since NBA 2K10. These were the rankings for each player as they first entered the game.

It is worth noting that due to the lockoutNBA 2K12 did not include any of the rookie class (e.g. Kyrie Irving and Kawhi Leonard) when the game was first released. Even once they were added to the game, however, none had a high enough rating to make this list.

Some honorable mentions whose debut ratings just barely missed the cut for our list and were rated a 77 include Anthony Edwards (2K21), Trae Young (2K19), Jayson Tatum (2K18) and Andrew Wiggins (2K15).

Meanwhile, some players who did not come close but have had tremendous professional careers include Nikola Jokic (68), Pascal Siakam (67), Giannis Antetkounmpo (60) and Rudy Gobert (52). So an original NBA 2K rating is not always the best indicator for future success in the NBA.

For what it is worth, the mean/median/mode for a rookie in NBA 2K since 2009 is between 71 and 72. So the following players who began their pro careers with a 77 or higher deserve some quick praise:

What is rookie Victor Wembanyama’s player rating in NBA 2K24?

Ronnie 2K recently linked up with Victor Wembanyama to unveil the rookie’s initial player rating in NBA 2K24.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama has an overall rating of 84 in NBA 2K24. This is one of the highest ratings for an incoming player in the video game’s history, and the list of outsized expectations for the French national continues to grow. Last season, the Orlando Magic’s Paolo Banchero started the year as a 78 overall and Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren earned an initial rating of 77 in NBA 2K23.

NBA 2K24 is set to launch this September and comes in three distinct versions, all honoring the late Kobe Bryant. The annual edition of the game has become a big part of basketball culture, and player ratings have increasingly served as currency of a sort among fans and athletes alike. The makers of 2K have slowly revealed the rankings of different stars to meet fans’ excitement and curiosity.

Wembanyama first learned of his initial rating alongside the game’s marketing guru Ronnie 2K. He seemed excited upon opening the envelope which contained his rating.

“That’s nice,” Wembanywama said. “That’s alright, that’s alright.”

Now that the 2023 NBA offseason is in the so-called summer doldrums, one of the best new traditions keeping NBA fans tethered ever so loosely to their favorite league is the annual summer update of the individual player ratings for the popular basketball simulation video game, NBA 2k.

And after news broke of the rating of star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, fans of the storied franchise immediately debated whether his overall rating is a fair one in light of where the St. Louis native stands compared to his peers in the league for next season.

Among the many people taking a deep dive into Tatum’s ratings for NBA 2k24 were the hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, who also touched on some rumors that Kristaps Porzingis might be dealing with a foot injury.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about all of the aforementioned concerns.

Today, we have decided to take a look at the players with the best average ratings in NBA 2K history throughout their various times featured in the game. It shouldn’t come as a surprise who finishes first on this list, as LeBron James has been one of the best players in the world for the past 15 years.

However, after James, things do get interesting. We’ll give you a hint: Another Los Angeles Lakers legend finishes second on the list.

Oh, and for those curious, Michael Jordan was only featured in NBA 2K during his time with the Washington Wizards, but he still managed to be a Top 10 player.

What is Jayson Tatum’s overall player rating in NBA 2K24?

Can you guess Jayson Tatum’s overall player rating in NBA 2K24?

Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is among the best of the best in professional basketball. During the 2022-23 season, he was once again an All-Star, flirted with an MVP campaign, and even earned All-NBA First Team honors. Will he remain aloft in rarified air heading into next season? The makers of the hit video game NBA 2K seem to think so.

Each year the game releases players’ overall rating, a number 1 to 100 which is a lump value for just how good an individual player is in the game. In 2K23, Tatum started the year with a 94 overall rating before jumping to a 95 in the middle of the season.

In NBA 2K24, Tatum is once again one of the top-rated players in the Association.

LeBron James NBA 2K ratings through the years

One of the most exciting parts of buying NBA 2K annually is seeing the player ratings and how they’ve changed from seasons prior, particularly for one’s favorite players.

One player who has always ranked highly in the game is, of course, LeBron James, who was rated 78 as a rookie by NBA 2K, 88 as a sophomore and then never fell back below 94.

NBA 2K24 has the GOAT candidate rated as a 96, which could prove low depending on how James performs this season.

Below, check out LeBron James’ NBA 2K ratings through the years.
