Broncos have 4 prime-time games on 2023 schedule

The Broncos have four prime-time games on their 2023 schedule and two late-season games are candidates for a national spotlight as well.

Following the arrival of quarterback Russell Wilson last offseason, the Denver Broncos received a lot of love from the NFL’s schedule makers.

The Broncos were given five prime-time gamesMonday Night Football (twice), Sunday Night Football (twice) and Thursday Night Football — on their initial 2022 schedule, plus two more nationally-televised games (one in London and one on Christmas Day).

The national spotlight backfired as Denver’s offense was painful to watch in 2022 and late in the season, the team’s own fans were asking for the Broncos to be flexed out of primetime (they were flexed out of SNF in Week 14).

The league’s schedule makers apparently expect the team to bounce back under new coach Sean Payton in 2023. Denver has been given four prime-time games on the 2023 schedule: Week 6 at the Chiefs (TNF), Week 10 at the Bills (MNF), Week 11 vs. the Vikings (SNF) and Week 16 vs. the Patriots (SNF).

The Broncos also have opportunities for two more prime-time games — Week 15 at the Bills (Dec. 16 or 17) and Week 18 at the Raiders (Jan. 6 or 7) could be played in a nationally-televised Saturday game. The NFL will finalize those late-season games later this year.

All 3 Broncos preseason games will be nationally televised on NFL Network

All three of the Broncos’ preseason games this summer will be nationally televised on NFL Network!

The season hasn’t even started yet, but it’s already clear that the NFL believes the Denver Broncos are relevant again.

The league’s schedule-makers gave the Broncos five prime-time games in the regular season with seven total nationally-televised games. But wait, there’s more!

All three of Denver’s preseason games are set to be nationally televised on NFL Network this summer, the league announced Monday. So in addition to airing locally on KTVD Channel 20, the team’s preseason contests will also be made available across the country to every fan with NFLN.

Here’s a reminder of the Broncos’ preseason schedule:

  • Week 1: vs. Cowboys (Aug. 13, 7 p.m. MT)
  • Week 2: @ Bills (Aug. 20, 11 a.m. MT)
  • Week 3: vs. Vikings (Aug. 27, 7 p.m. MT)

Before hosting Dallas in their preseason opener, Denver plans to host the Cowboys for a joint training camp practice.

Including preseason, the Broncos are now set to have 10 nationally-televised games this season — with the possibility of additional prime-time games being added during the regular season with flex scheduling.

Russell Wilson has put Denver back in the spotlight.

Broncos have 7 nationally televised games this season

The Broncos have five prime-time games this year, the league max for the initial schedule.

The Denver Broncos were prime-time game darlings for the NFL when Peyton Manning was the team’s quarterback from 2012-2015.

Following the star quarterback’s retirement, though, Denver missed the playoffs in six-straight seasons and national interest in the team diminished. Consequently, the NFL initially gave the Broncos just one prime-time game (on Thursday Night Football) when the 2021 schedule came out last year.

That’s changed in 2022, thanks to new quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson’s arrival in Denver has made the Broncos contenders again, putting the team back in the national spotlight. The NFL will feature Wilson with his new team seven times this year in nationally televised games, five in prime time.

It all starts in Week 1 when Russell Wilson travels with his new team to face his old team, the Seattle Seahawks, on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” on Sept. 12 at 6:15 p.m. MT.

Just two weeks later in Week 3, the Broncos will host the San Francisco 49ers on “Sunday Night Football” on NBC on Sept. 25 at 6:20 p.m. MT.

In Week 5, Denver will host the Colts on “Thursday Night Football” on Oct. 6 at 6:16 p.m. MT on Prime Video.

Following that game, the Broncos will host the Los Angeles Chargers on “Monday Night Football” on Oct. 17 at 6:15 p.m. MT on ESPN.

In Week 14, Denver will play on “Sunday Night Football” again on Dec. 11, this time against the Kansas City Chiefs on NBC.

In addition to those five prime-time games, the Broncos will also have two other nationally-televised games.

Denver will face the Jaguars in London on Oct. 30 — that technically won’t be a prime-time game with a 7:30 a.m. MT kickoff and it technically won’t be “televised” because it’s streaming on ESPN+, but the contest will be available to fans all across the U.S. in Week 8.

The Broncos will later travel to California to face the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 25 as part of the NFL’s Christmas Day tripleheader this year. That game will begin at 2:30 p.m. MT and will air on CBS/Nickelodeon.

Broncos will have plenty of prime-time games in 2022, perhaps including Seahawks

Russell Wilson will put the Broncos back in the national spotlight, with multiple prime-time games expected this fall.

When the NFL announced the Denver Broncos’ 2021 schedule last year, the team had just one initially-scheduled prime-time game. The Broncos had missed the playoffs in five-straight seasons after Peyton Manning’s retirement, and the NFL’s schedule makers considered them a bust for national television audiences, giving them only one mandatory “Thursday Night Football” game.

The Broncos were irrelevant.

After agreeing to trade for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Denver has quickly become relevant again, and the schedule will reflect that.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Broncos are given the initially-scheduled max of five prime-time games this fall, perhaps starting with the NFL’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1.

Another strong candidate for prime time on Denver’s list of 2022 opponents is Seattle, Wilson’s former team. That would be a dream “Sunday Night Football” matchup for NBC — and every other network will want it, too.

Then there’s the division games.

Russell Wilson vs. Patrick Mahomes and Wilson vs. Justin Herbert will be must-watch TV when the Broncos face the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively. One or both of those matchups could end up on national television in 2022.

Denver will also face the Baltimore Ravens, potential contenders in the AFC, and the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, two of Wilson’s former division rivals. The NFL will have plenty of great opportunities to put the Broncos in prime time this fall, and they’ll take advantage of it.

The 2022 NFL schedule will likely be announced in April or May.

Broncos set to play their first (and perhaps only) nationally televised game of the season

Broncos are set to play on national television for the first (and likely only) time this season on Thursday.

The Denver Broncos2021 schedule includes just one nationally televised game, a “Thursday Night Football” showdown with the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 21. The game will be televised on both NFL Network and local FOX stations, with Prime Video offering streaming coverage.

Unless their season turns around, the Broncos might be unlikely to get flexed into anymore nationally televised games this fall.

Every afternoon NFL game after Week 10 is eligible to be flexed to “Sunday Night Football,” but Denver hasn’t looked like a team worthy of “SNF” consideration in recent weeks.

The Broncos’ season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Jan. 9 is also eligible to be flexed to Saturday, Jan. 8. The NFL will flex a pair of games to Saturday that weekend that will be nationally televised. But unless Denver is in contention for a playoff spot in Week 18, that game seems unlikely to get flexed to Saturday.

So there’s a possibility that the Broncos could return to prime time TV later this season, but it’s probably more realistic to assume Thursday evening will be Denver’s only nationally broadcast game of the year. Let’s enjoy it!
