Florida football loses 4-star recruit to Georgia Bulldogs

A four-star defensive lineman has flipped from the Florida Gators to the Georgia Bulldogs.

A Florida Gators four-star commit from the Class of 2024 has flipped to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Nasir Johnson[/autotag] announced on Wednesday via an Instagram post that he has changed his commitment to Florida’s most-hated foe in the SEC.

The flip helps to fill a need for the Bulldogs while taking away from a strong class that Florida has developed over the past year, with the Gators recruiting class falling to No. 5, according to 247Sports.

The Athletic’s senior writer Seth Emerson said that the move isn’t the end of the world for the Gators’ recruiting class, but if the program keeps losing games, prospects may lose interest in what head coach Billy Napier is building.

“Itā€™s not a class killer,” Emerson said. “As the Gators still have nine commitments who ranked higher in the overall rankings. But itā€™s not a great sign for momentum with the team having lost three straight and in danger of missing a bowl game.”

Emerson also noted the recruits who are still giving the Florida Gators hope for future classes.

“On the defensive line, Florida does have four-star LJ McCray, the nationā€™s No. 10 DL recruit,” Emerson said. “It also has four-star Amaris Williams (No. 100 overall) and four-star Kendall Jackson. But the Gators will have to find a way to replace Johnson in the class and keep pushing to shore up their depth and talent base.”

Hailing from Dublin, Georgia, Johnson is a four-star recruit and ranked at No. 75 among the 2024 class. The defensive lineman is placed at No. 14 for his position.

What’s better than one commitment from a four-star defensive lineman for Florida? How about a pair of four-star defensive line commits for the Gators?

The news of [autotag]Nasir Johnson[/autotag]’s commitment to the University of Florida came in as fans were processing a verbal pledge from another four-star defensive lineman, Amaris Williams.

Johnson, who plays high school ball in Dublin, Georgia, pledged his services to the Gators within an hour of Williams’ announcement, and he wouldn’t be the last either. The third of four commitments on the day, Florida’s recruiting staff was clearly firing on all cylinders.

It’s worth noting that Johnson played on the offensive line in high school and could see some time on the other side of the trenches while at Florida as well. His 6-foot-4-inch, 300-pound frame is suitable for either spot, but he’s still learning to get a good jump on the snap. Violent tackles are his signature.

Florida State, Georgia, Louisiana State and South Carolina were among the other teams that offered him before his commitment to Florida.

Johnson is a four-star recruit, according to every major service besides ESPN which has yet to grade him. 247Sports is highest on him at No. 191 overall and No. 25 among defensive linemen in the class of 2024, but the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major services, has him at No. 245 nationally and No. 26 among those at his position.

Gators get 247Sports crystal ball prediction for 4-star defensive lineman

Florida does not have a defensive lineman signed in the 2024 recruiting cycle yet, but this big man might be the first.

Florida football got another crystal ball prediction from 247Sports on Monday when Blake Alderman submitted his pick for four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Nasir Johnson[/autotag]Ā out of Dublin (Georgia). The projection for the 6-foot-4-inch, 300-pound trench warrior was given a medium level of confidence.

Alderman’s pick is based on what he has seen the past few months as Johnson has made a series of unofficial visits to campus. In his most recent stop, he came away so impressed with what Billy Napier and Co. have put together in the Swamp that the Gators earned the top spot among preferred schools.

ā€œThey sit number one with me right now,ā€ Johnson said to Swamp247. ā€œThey are showing that they really want me and they will do whatever it takes to get me. Not just about football either. They are going deeper. They treat me like family and showing me real genuine love.ā€

His main points of contact with Florida’s staff have been area recruiter Jay Bateman, defensive line coach Sean Spencer and off-field assistant Kali James ā€” all three of whom he has grown close to in recent months. The rising high school senior has an official visit set with UF this coming weekend, following a trip to see the South Carolina Gamecocks last weekend and the Florida State Seminoles after swinging through Gainesville.

Johnson is ranked No. 213 overall and No. 28 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 244 and 28, respectively. The recent crystal ball from 247Sports in favor of Florida is his first while On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has behind Florida State, who hold a 37.0% chance vs. UF’s 32.4% chance, followed by South Carolina (21.0%) and Georgia (6.2%).

Florida leading for 4-star defensive lineman after recent visit

Billy Napier’s recruiting staff is doing a fine job with one of the top defensive line recruits in the state of Georgia.

Dublin High School (Georgia) defensive lineman Nasir Johnson has an official visit to the Swamp planned for later on in June, but he stopped by early on Thursday for an unofficial visit, according to Swamp247.

Johnson is no stranger to Gainesville. This was his third trip to the University of Florida, and he’s seen enough to put the Gators on top of his recruitment nine days out from an official visit.

“They sit number one with me right now,” Johnson said to Swamp247. “They are showing that they really want me and they will do whatever it takes to get me. Not just about football either. They are going deeper. They treat me like family and showing me real genuine love.”

Florida still has some competition for Johnson, though. South Carolina will get him this weekend for an official visit, and Florida State will host him the week after he’s at UF. Being sandwiched in the middle of two other official visits isn’t ideal, but Florida’s done enough work to enter the three-week gauntlet as the team to beat.

Johnson’s timeline calls for a commitment around the end of the summer. Late July or early August sounds about right since he’s looking to wrap things up by the start of his senior year.

The On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major recruiting services, has Johnson listed at No. 244 overall, but 247Sports thinks he clears the top 200 at 191.

Blue-chip Peach State DL sets official visit date with Florida

The Gators will get this big bruiser on campus for an official visit in mid-June.

Florida football’s recruiting efforts continue to roll along as the program begins to reap the fruits of its scholarship offers handed out over the past few months. Among the many to have received a chance to don the Orange and Blue is four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Nasir Johnson[/autotag] out of Dublin (Georgia) who recently set his official visit date with the Gators.

According to Swamp247’s Blanke Alderman, the 6-foot-4.5-inch, 300-pound trench warrior will swing through Gainesville on the weekend of June 16, in which he will join a handful of others making their Hogtown trek. The high school junior has already traveled to see the Swamp twice in April to check out the team’s practice as well as the Orange and Blue game, coming away feeling good about Billy Napier’s program.

“They said they really like my size, because I am a big guy,” Johnson told Swamp247. “They said that is great, but I also move really well and am really athletic for being so big. They said I am a weapon because I have the size to make plays, but I also can be athletic and make a move to make plays. So I can do it all. I can wreck the block or I can move past it.”

He first received his offer from area recruiter and inside linebackers coach Jay Bateman back in March. His OV with the Gators is the only one he has planned so far, though the Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats, Tennessee Volunteers and possibly the Miami Hurricanes are in the mix for his remaining visits.

Johnson is ranked No. 278 overall and No. 28 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 266 and 27, respectively. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Florida out front with a 66.1% chance of landing him, followed by Georgia and Florida State at 15.5% and 13.3%, respectively.

Florida sitting high on 4-star DL’s list after spring visits

Florida is evolving into a major player in the recruiting race for four-star defensive lineman Nasir Johnson after hosting him a few times over the spring.

The Florida Gators hosted Dublin (Georgia) defensive lineman [autotag]Nasir Johnson[/autotag] twice in April, and the recruiting staff’s efforts are paying off as UF continues to climb his list of top programs.

Swamp247’s Blake Alderman caught up with Johnson after the visits and his reactions were mostly positive. The 6-foot-4-inch, 300-pounder admits he’s just getting to know the school and program, but the defensive scheme is something that interests him, as well as defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong.

His first visit came a few weeks ago during the spring practice period, and he was able to observe the team and talk to coaches about where he fits in. The second visit was for the Orange and Blue Game, which was a little less personal but still an informative trip for Johnson.

“I can easily see them being top three for me right now,” Johnson said of Florida.

Official visits should happen over the summer, but Johnson doesn’t have any dates locked in right now. The topic was briefly touched on during his visits, but it’s something the two parties plan to figure out in the coming months.

Alderman says Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida State are schools in touch with him the most and likely to get official visits, while On3’s recruiting prediction machine has Georgia and FSU leading the way.

Jonhson is a four-star recruit, according to On3. The other three major recruiting services haven’t graded him yet, but that should change considering the looks he’s getting from Power Five programs.

On3 has him at No. 245 overall and No. 22 among defensive linemen in the class of 2024. He’s also ranked No. 30 out of the state of Georgia.
