Tom Brady shares ‘Myles Jack wasn’t down’ take

“I don’t think he was down. Oh God, I don’t think we were catching him, either.’

Even Tom Brady doesn’t think Myles Jack was down.

Arguably the most heartbreaking play in Jaguars history occurred in the 2017-18 AFC Championship Game. Jacksonville held a 10-point lead on the road in New England with 13 minutes and 53 seconds between the franchise and its first-ever Super Bowl appearance.

About 10 seconds later, the legend of “Myles Jack wasn’t down” was born.

Brady, then the Patriots’ quarterback and a five-time league championship winner, and the New England offense ran a double-screen-pass trick play, getting the ball to receiver Danny Amendola and then running back Dion Lewis on opposite sides of the backfield before advancing.

With blockers and an open field ahead, Lewis scampered for about 20 yards before Jack, Jacksonville’s starting middle linebacker, caught up in pursuit from the other side of the gridiron and successfully stripped the ball away from its carrier.

But as Jack rolled off the ground and up to gain yardage — with more space in front of him than Lewis had, perhaps enough to score a touchdown and create a three-possession lead — the referees blew their whistle, ruling him down by Lewis’ contact.

Jack had not appeared to take possession of the football until after Lewis’ hand slipped off Jack’s body.

The ball was placed at the Jacksonville 33-yard-line, the Jaguars went three-and-out offensively, and the Patriots scored two unanswered touchdowns in the final 12:03 of play, punching their ticket to Super Bowl LII.

Brady, who has since retired after winning another two championships (including one with Tampa Bay), joined legendary Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor and co-hosts, Ryan Clark and Channing Crowder, on The Pivot podcast Tuesday to discuss this exact play, among other topics.

Like most Jacksonville fans, Brady believes the Jaguars were beaten by the refs in that moment.

“2017, AFC Championship game,” Taylor set the scene. “Jags fans will probably love this, I’ll take the opportunity: Myles Jack, was he down?”

“Oh, nah. I don’t think he was down,” Brady responded. “Oh God, I don’t think we were catching him, either. I ran away, I sure as hell wasn’t going to tackle him.”

New England lost to Philadelphia, led by current Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson, in the big game that year. Jacksonville also signed the Eagles’ starting quarterback from that game, Nick Foles, the following offseason. He spent one year with the club.

Steelers vs Bills: 5 players who must step up this week

The Steelers will need big games from Pat Freiermuth and Mason Cole this week.

No one is giving the Pittsburgh Steelers a shot this weekend against the Buffalo Bills. The weather is going to be miserable and could end up the great equalizer between a team with one of the top quarterbacks in the league and a former third-stringer pushed into the starting lineup.

Putting aside the quarterbacks, here are the five players for the Steelers who must step up this week.

Steelers vs Seahawks: 3 keys to victory this week

The Steelers must play up to help out Mason Rudolph and the defensive backups need to play big again.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers head out West to take on a Seattle Seahawks with as much to play for as Pittsburgh. The Seahawks have been inconsistent on both sides of the football and the same can be said for the Steelers. Pittsburgh needs to play as well as they did last week against the Cincinnati Bengals and here are the keys to victory.

Steelers elevate 2 key defenders from PS vs Seahawks

Myles Jacks and Eric Rowe played a huge role in the Steelers win last week.

With the Pittsburgh Steelers banged up on defense, the team brought up two more key defenders from the practice squad. The Steelers take on the Seattle Seahawks this week and they have called up inside linebacker Myles Jack and safety Eric Rowe to bolster the defense.

Both guys were called up last week for the first time this season and had strong games. Jack played 73 percent of the defensive snaps against the Cincinnati Bengals and finished with six tackles, one sack and two quarterback hurries. Meanwhile, Rowe played 96 percent of the defensive snaps. He had seven tackles and a key interception. Jack had the most snaps of any inside linebacker on the team last week.

The Steelers are doing their best to piece together the defense despite a rash of injuries at inside linebacker and safety. We expect to see Rowe and Patrick Peterson as the primary safeties and Jack will be the lead inside linebacker in the base defense with Mykal Walker working in as well.

7 Linebacker additions to help with Cowboys with the home stretch

The Cowboys could use some linebacker help heading into the playoffs. Here’s a look at who is available. | From @ArmyChiefW3

The debate was settled when Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons effectively told everyone that he would be crowding the line of scrimmage, instead of the Twitter-induced idea of playing off-the-ball linebacker. Parsons leads or is near the top in almost every statistical category yet the knee-jerk reaction to switching positions set the world on fire after a poor run-defense game against Buffalo.

With Parsons cemented as a pass rusher, it still doesn’t solve the Cowboys issue at their thinning linebacker group. The return of Cowboys defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins from a high ankle sprain would certainly help but he didn’t suit up against Miami and is questionable a week later for the tilt against Detroit.

Dallas entered the season light at the position and made some head-scratching moves that placed them in the spot they are in now. To supplement the lack of depth, the Cowboys utilized safeties to help stabilize their issues. While it may be easy for some to just say “go get a guy,” the guys available may come with issues of their own.

One key takeaway from Mike Tomlin’s comment on Steelers LB Myles Jack

Mike Tomlin doesn’t appear to be all too keen on Myles Jack being back in Pittsburgh.

Like many teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t very transparent with outsiders about exactly who does what when it comes to things like firing Matt Canada and bringing back Myles Jack.

Mike Tomlin will tell you that it was his decision and his decision alone to fire Canada. We all know that’s not true.

So when it came to the tone of his answer to a reporter’s question about Jack in Tuesday’s press conference, it sounded very much like he was already in Tomlin’s dog house, and perhaps, it wasn’t even his decision to bring him back.

How the question was worded, “You guys have moved on from Myles Jack after the season. Now you’ve brought him back. What do you see in him? What do you think he has left,” offered Tomlin an opportunity to approve of the decision and maybe puff Jack up a bit. Now, nothing may be left to puff him up about, but nevertheless, something positive could’ve come out of his response.

Instead, we got, “He’s a guy that has experience here and he’s here in a practice squad capacity. And, so, I won’t say much.”

Recall that the Steelers released Jack (who went to the Philadelphia Eagles, then abruptly retired) to help make the move for linebacker Elandon Roberts financially feasible. This couldn’t have sat well with Jack.

Am I overthinking the question and answer? Probably. Perhaps the perspective is off-base. But it speaks volumes as to what Tomlin thinks about Myles Jack — a player at a position the Steelers desperately need some solid help with.

LB Myles Jack comes out of retirement to sign with Steelers

The Steelers are getting a little more help on defense with Myles Jack.

According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, recently unretired inside linebacker Myles Jack is in Pittsburgh on Monday and plans to sign with the team’s practice squad, pending he passes a physical.

Jack was on the Steelers in 2022 and actually led the team in tackles. Jack proved to be a solid run defender but never provided the Steelers the coverage ability or splash plays they hoped for when they originally signed him. When the Steelers front office gutted out the inside linebacker depth chart in the offseason, Jack was not part of the team’s plan.

However, due to injuries, Jack looks to be returning and it shouldn’t be long before Jack is on the 53-man roster and getting snaps.

The Steelers lost starting inside linebacker Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander to season-ending injuries on back-to-back weeks. Against the Cleveland Browns, practice-squad linebacker Mykal Walker was called into action but Jack could replace him sooner rather than later.

Former Steelers LB Myles Jack could return to team

There could be a reunion between the Steelers and Myles Jack.

Earlier this year, inside linebacker Myles Jack retired from the NFL after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Jack has no unretired, cleared waivers and according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, is talking to the Pittsburgh Steelers about rejoining the team via the practice squad.

Jack spent 2022 with the Steelers and led the team with 104 total tackles. Jack came over from the Jacksonville Jaguars to be the replacement for Ryan Shazier. Jack was good but didn’t have the splash plays the team had hoped for and so the Steelers chose to move on from him along with the rest of the inside linebacker depth chart.

The Steelers have announced no official roster moves yet but we expect Mykal Walker and Tariq Carpenter to be called up to the 53-man roster leaving spots on the practice squad open, should Jack want to return.

Former Jaguars LB Myles Jack retires from NFL after 7 seasons

Myles Jack, who spent six of his seven NFL seasons with the Jaguars, reportedly informed the Eagles that he plans to retire.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack is calling it a career and informed the Philadelphia Eagles that he plans to retire, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Jack, 27, spent the majority of his career with the Jaguars after they picked him with the No. 36 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. In six seasons with Jacksonville, he appeared in 103 games and made 95 starts. Jack recorded 513 tackles with the Jaguars — seventh most in franchise history — along with three interceptions, two forced fumbles, 6.5 sacks, and four fumble recoveries.

His most notable moment with the Jaguars came during the AFC Championship in January 2018 when he chased down the New England Patriots’ Dion Lewis and forced a fumble, which he recovered himself. While the play was blown dead by officials, replays later showed that Jack wasn’t touched down by a New England player and should’ve been allowed to return the fumble for a likely touchdown.

Jack signed a four-year contract extension with the Jaguars just prior to the 2019 season, but was released by the team in March 2022. He played one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and joined the Eagles earlier this month.

Eagles’ linebacker Myles Jack to retire after seven NFL seasons

Philadelphia #Eagles linebacker Myles Jack has informed team officials that he’s going to retire from the NFL

Before signing with the Eagles, Myles Jack considered attending trade school to become an electrician or plumber.

The former UCLA star has made over $50 million, but he wanted to stay busy and contemplated a career change before Philadelphia called with an opportunity.

Jack is walking away from the game after one preseason game and two weeks at the NovaCare Complex, informing team officials that he will retire.

Jack played seven seasons for the Jaguars and Steelers. He had 396 solo tackles, 221 assists, 6.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and three interceptions.
