Michigan State basketball is officially heading back to the NCAA Tournament for a 25th straight appearance

Michigan State basketball is officially heading back to the NCAA Tournament for a 25th straight appearance.

The men’s basketball NCAA Tournament bracket was revealed on Sunday evening, with Michigan State once again making the field of 68. The Spartans landed as a No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 seed USC in a first round matchup in the East Region.

The Spartans’ first round matchup against the the Trojans will be played on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. Should Michigan State beat USC then they would face the winner of No. 2 seed Marquette-No. 15 seed Vermont in the second round on Sunday.

The Spartans hold the second longest active NCAA Tournament streak, behind only Kansas — who reached their 33rd straight tournament this year.

MSU paired with Duke in NCAA Tournament bracket prediction from The Athletic

Two of college basketball’s biggest brands could be linking up in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament

Two of college basketball’s biggest brands could be linking up in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Athletic released an updated NCAA Tournament bracket projection on Friday, and Michigan State came in as a No. 9 seed. That, off the bat, seemed rather low for the Spartans compared to other bracketologists. What’s more attention-grabbing is who they would face in the opening round: No. 8 seed Duke.

Michigan State and Duke have played their share of big-time matchups over the years, including numerous ones in the NCAA Tournament. Just last year, Duke knocked out the Spartans in the second round.

But this would be the first time these two teams met this early in the event and would do amazing in TV ratings. So this may be a matchup we actually see in a couple of weeks.

ESPN: MSU basketball becomes ‘lock’ for NCAA Tournament with win over Nebraska

In the eyes of John Gasaway of ESPN, Michigan State basketball is now officially a lock for the NCAA Tournament

In the eyes of John Gasaway of ESPN, Michigan State basketball is now officially a lock for the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans overcame a double-digit halftime deficit in a massive comeback win over Nebraska on Tuesday night. That win improved the Spartans to 18-11 overall this year and have moved them into a “lock” position for the NCAA Tournament in ESPN’s updated bubble watch post.

Michigan State is one of 29 teams nationally and one of five from the Big Ten that are considered locks for the NCAA Tournament. The four other Big Ten teams listed as locks are Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern and Maryland.

Iowa, Illinois and Rutgers are listed as “should be in”, and Michigan and Wisconsin are slated in the “work to do” segment.

MSU is safely dancing in Andy Katz’s latest NCAA Tournament projection released earlier this week

MSU with probable path to Sweet 16 in latest NCAA Tournament bracket prediction from Andy Katz

Michigan State basketball’s gets a favorable draw in the latest NCAA Tournament bracket prediction from Andy Katz of NCAA.com

Could Michigan State reach the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 this year? I’m not particularly high on those chances but this bracket draw in Andy Katz’ updated NCAA Tournament prediction has me thinking otherwise.

Katz released an updated bracket prediction for the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, which listed Michigan State as a No. 5 seed. This bracket prediction appears to have been released after Michigan State’s loss at Indiana so it seems like Katz is particularly high on the Spartans.

In total, Katz has 10 Big Ten teams dancing in his updated bracket prediction. See where Katz has each of these Big Ten teams in his last bracket prediction, and my thoughts on this potential NCAA Tournament draw for the Spartans below:

Andy Katz of NCAA.com believes Michigan State basketball will end up in the same landing spot in the NCAA Tournament as last year.

Katz released his first NCAA Tournament bracket prediction of the year on Thursday, and it has the Spartans ending up as a No. 7 seed — just like last year. Katz predicts Michigan State will play No. 10 seed Utah in the opening round of the big dance.

Other Big Ten teams listed in Katz’ bracket prediction are Purdue (No. 1 seed), Maryland (No. 2 seed), Indiana (No. 3 seed), Illinois (No. 4 seed), Wisconsin (No. 6 seed), Ohio State (No. 8 seed), Rutgers (No. 9 seed), Michigan (No. 10 seed) and Iowa (No. 11 seed).

MSU PG Tyson Walker to play in NCAA Tournament matchup vs. Davidson

Michigan State point guard Tyson Walker is good to go in Friday’s NCAA Tournament matchup against Davidson

Michigan State point guard Tyson Walker is good to go in Friday’s NCAA Tournament matchup against Davidson.

Head coach Tom Izzo confirmed on Thursday that Walker is expected to play for the Spartans after suffering an ankle injury in the Big Ten Tournament last week. The injury occurred early in Michigan State’s loss to Purdue on Saturday, and it was uncertain early in the week if he’d be able to play in the NCAA Tournament.

Colton Pouncy of The Athletic recorded a video of Walker shooting three-pointers during the team’s open practice on Thursday, and it appears he is in good position to have an impactful game vs. Davidson. Check out the video below:

Walker is averaging 8.1 points and 4.3 assists this season for the Spartans, and helps lead Michigan State’s offense in tandem with AJ Hoggard. So getting him back for this game is huge for Michigan State.

Tip off between Michigan State and Davidson is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. EDT on Friday. The game can be seen on CBS.

Michigan State opens as slight favorite over Davidson in NCAA Tournament matchup

Spartans open as a slight favorite over Davidson in Friday’s NCAA Tournament first round matchup

Michigan State basketball is only a slight favorite over Davidson in their first round matchup of the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans have opened as a 1.5-point favorite over the Wildcats in Friday’s tournament matchup. All betting lines are courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook.

Michigan State is the No. 7 seed and Davidson is the No. 10 seed so it shouldn’t come off as a surprise that the Spartans are favored by a small margin. The Spartans finished the season with a 22-12 record, while Davidson was 27-6 and claimed the regular season A-10 championship.

Tipoff is scheduled for approximately 9:40 p.m. EDT and the game can be seen on CBS.
