Could MSU Football still go bowling after all? There’s technically now a chance that could happen

Update: This opportunity was taken by Louisiana Tech.

As of right now, the Michigan State football season is over. But, that could potentially change…

College football insider Brett McMurphy of Action Network reported on Saturday afternoon that Marshall has to pull out of the Independence Bowl due to the large number of players on their current roster that hit the transfer portal. This effectively means that Army — who was set to play Marshall in the bowl game — is left without an opponent.

Here’s where Michigan State could slide into the game. According to McMurphy, the Independence Bowl is going to look to find a 5-7 team to replace Marshall in the game. As fans should know, Michigan State finished the year 5-7 overall and did not qualify for a bowl game following a blowout loss in the season finale against Rutgers.

The Independence Bowl is played in Shreveport, Louisana on December 28.

McMurphy pointed out that it’s unlikely that a team will be available to play in the bowl game due to many players already heading home for the holidays. For Michigan State, the fall semester wrapped up this past week and odds are most of the team has left East Lansing, Mich. already.

So, technically, there’s a chance Michigan State could get offered the opportunity to play in the bowl game. But it’s most likely they would turn down that opportunity should it get offered their way anyway.

We will watch for any further reports on the Independence Bowl as a new team to replace Marshall would need to be announced very soon. I wouldn’t hold your breath on this actually happening, but, there’s at least a chance as of now that we will get one more game of Michigan State football this year.

MSU standout WR Nick Marsh indicates return for another season

It appears Michigan State football has gotten its biggest transfer portal win of the season

It appears Michigan State football has gotten its biggest transfer portal win of the offseason.

There were reports and rumblings last week that Michigan State standout freshman wide receiver Nick Marsh would return for another season with the Spartans, and it appears he confirmed that with a post on Friday. Marsh took to social media platform X and sent out a post shouting “Go Green” — which some (including myself) are considering a confirmation of his return for another season at Michigan State.

Marsh never formally entered his name into the transfer portal, but there were rumors and indications that other programs were making a run at him. However, it appears the Spartans were able to fight off any competitors and will keep one of its most important players on its roster for the 2025 season.

Marsh finished his true freshman season with 41 receptions for 649 yards and three touchdowns. He will enter next season as one of the top returning wide receivers in the Big Ten.

Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith gets season grade from USA TODAY

What did USA TODAY think of Jonathan Smith’s first year with the Spartans?

The season is over, and Michigan State football missed a bowl game for their third straight year, making the Spartans the only team in the Big Ten to not play in at least one bowl game over that span.

However, there were some signs of life, and new energy brought into the program with the hiring of Jonathan Smith. Smith had the difficult task of rebuilding a program that just suffered an embarrassing scandal.

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY just put out his report card for every head coach in college football, and he gave Jonathan Smith a C-minus for his performance this year.

Here is what he had to say:

Michigan State had a very nice win against Iowa in October. But the remaining four wins were Florida Atlantic, Maryland, Prairie View and Purdue. Smith’s grade is docked for the Spartans’ 41-14 loss at home to Rutgers in the season finale to fall one win short of the postseason.
